[JAWS-Users] Adobe Reader 11 update

2012-02-21 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Friends,
When I turned my computer on this morning, that pesky
Adobe update thing came on.

I know this has been covered before, but I forgot.

JAWS can only read:

Button

Button

I

I first clicked on the I and then the Buttons went away.

I do not know if the update installed or not.

How can I handle this?

The icon on my Desk Top still says

Adobe X

Thanks for your help.

Alan

Looks like all that stuff I did back in the Woodstock Generation is catching
up with me!

LOL!
No, I am not having a Senior Moment, not quite there yet!

I forgot the command to bring up
Research it.

I am using JAWS 11 and XP-Home.

Thanks very much!

With JAWS running, as now, Go into your Task manager with ctrl-alt-del or
control shift escape, and when there press j once or more times until
jfw.exe is highlighted. That will be your procedure in the event of JAWS
not shutting down correctly. then, you will press alt-e to end Task, and
then if you need to, after the windows dingding Press enter to confirm.

[JAWS-Users] Here is the simple Day by Day calendar

2011-10-04 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Friends,

Here is the Day By Day Calendar

It is totally JAWS friendly, and Freeware!

I had to send it up to sendspace, as my ISP A T and T would not allow
executable files as attachments.

I even tried to zip it up and attach it, but still it would not go through.
So I zipped it up and sent it to Sendspace.
Below is the download link.

After you download it, you must unzip it, then simply hit Enter on the exe
file, it is self extracting.

Very simple to use.

The program is still there if some one wants to go to her site!

Her husband has left it up since 2006 in Memory of her.
She was an incredible lady and I learned most of what I know about JAWS and
Windows from her starting in 1999!
She passed away September 4, 2006, after a minor accident while riding a

She went to bed that night, and never woke up, as she died because of a
small blood vessel that had been broken in her brain.

[JAWS-Users] Anti-virus program that works well with JAWS

2011-08-09 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello,
I also am using AVG, the paid version, which I purchased On Sale at
Staples, cheaper than the price on the AVG web site.

What I like about the paid version is that it also contains an anti-malware
feature and also often the definitions are updated 3 times a day, and at
least 2 times a day.

It is very JAWS friendly if you route JAWS to PC.
And that is not a problem for me.

Before you decide to invest, check out the realspeak solo voices up on
fs's website. they are quite decent and are proprietary as in they work
only with jaws. you might find some that you like.

Hi Patti. If you are referring to the latest youtube to mp3
converter? I think that is also the version that I just upgraded too a

few days ago.

Jaws doesn't seem to read the options as well as it did in the last
version. When you tab through the options? After pasting in the URL
of the youtube video you want to convert. There is a list. In which
you can choose the format to which you want to convert the video
into. I notice now, you can choose between: OG, Wave, MP4 and MP3.
Perhaps, you have it set to MP4? and this is causing your trouble?

Take care

[JAWS-Users] JAWS not speaking Copy or Paste

2011-07-18 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Friends,
I must assume many know that in JAWS 11, which I am using, and also in JAWS
12, which many friends use and have told me, JAWS very often will not say
Copy when control plus the C key have been used to copy a selected item.

And the same goes for Control plus V to paste the item you have just copied.
Closing JAWS and then reopening JAWS resolves this issue all the time for
me, but only for a limited amount of time, so I just got used to ignoring
JAWS not speaking Copy and Paste.

I know it always does, so then I do not need to hear JAWS tell me.

Hope this helps some.

Hello there;

I should also add, if you highlight a file or select a few files,
And wish not to use the applications key to copy, or just simply ctrl+c to
copy to clip board,
You could press alt+e and down arrow to copy.
Also, using the application key you could use the sent-to sub menu?

2011-07-18 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Graham and Friends,
Oh yes, that happens to me once in a while.
Not like the copy and paste commands, which happens or would happen 20
times a day if I wanted the command to speak, but once in a few weeks or so.

And yes, closing JAWS and reopening it resolves this problem!

Hi,
I just checked out this sight and at first I agreed with the below poster
about the results not being divided into headings. At first I had to down
arrow and down arrow through the results until I found a result worth
viewing. I then thought to myself there must be a much quicker way with
navigating through the results seeing as pressing h doesn't work for
obvious

reasons. So, I perform the move to the next same element command and I was
able to jump from result to result much faster.
What I did was just typed in a random search term, like the
undertaker, then I arrowed past the search button until I reach the first
result and here I performed the previously mentioned command and I was
able

to fly through the results.
In closing, Thank you Patty for sharing this site. I am definitely keeping
it but for now I will still stick with http://labs.google.com/accessible/.

I'm using outlook Express, but it'd be in a similar (view) menu or
Ribbon.
Look in there. it has to do with Windows encoding. there may be an
Encoding
submenu, which lists all the windows encoding types. the one I have
checked
is Western European iso, and I never have the problem (although I've
heard
of it in the past from people who had. that's the way towards the
solution.

If not in the view menu, then look in others.
the view ribbon?)

Dear Mike,
Why not give

I mean, they designed it and put it out especially for we Blind or Visually

A breath of fresh air I must say to have a company go out of their way like

Hi All,

Sorry about the subject line but, that was the easiest way to put it!
Here

is what happens. When I go to Google open the edit field to type in a
search string, I start typing, then Jaws all the sudden anounces, table
8

, then the edit field will close sometimes sometimes not. It doesn't
matter what I type in the edit field but, after typing a few characters
Jaws
says, table 8 . I have played around with table settings can't get
it
to stop. What do I need to do to stop Jaws from reading / recognizing
this

Table 8 crap? All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Take
care.

Sorry, I didn't save the original message, but this subject hopefully will

You didn't say, or I don't recall which version of Word you are using.

There are I think four types of horizontal lines that you can draw across
a page, these are known as horizontal rules. All of them are initiated by
typing

the appropriate symbol three times and then immediately pressing enter.

A regular horizontal line is dash.

A bold horizontal line is underscore (shift of the dash).

A double-line is equals.

A line of asterisks is with the asterisk key.

Note:

Depending on which version of Word you use, you may need to make sure the
borders checkbox is checked in Word Options. In MsWord 2007, you will
find the
checkbox by going to Word Options, Proofing, Auto-Correct options, and
Auto-correct as you Type.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Hi Alan,

If you use the Adjust JAWS settings dialog by pressing JAWS key with V,
you

can then press B until you get to the choice under reading options for
announcing borders. Use spacebar to turn it on and then press enter key.
When you use up or down arrow key after turning on that option, JAWS will
let you know that there is a border. However, if you try to find out if
the
border goes across the screen, JAWS does not give you that information.
You

can check the cursor position, and if it is at 1 inch, when you use right
arrow key you will not find a position on the far right of the screen
being

given to you. In Word 2010, if you use Alt followed by B followed by Z, a
horizontal line will be inserted into the document. You can then list
inline objects by using CTRL+shift+O, press enter key on the object in the
list, and the focus will go to it. Using the Alt+delete command will give
you the one inch from the left position. Using right arrow key and then
checking the position will give you a position of something like 7.5
inches

from the left. Using one arrow key to move from the one inch position to
the position on the far right will let you know that the line is straight
across the screen. The use of three dashes followed by the enter key does
put the line all the way across the screen but I don't think you can
verify

it with JAWS other than knowing there is a border. You can make several
choices for single lines of different types by using the Borders and
Shading
dialog box. Using that box, you can change width of lines, and you can
pick
from several different types of lines. Checking only the bottom border
for
example, will give a line across the screen using the width for the line
and

the type you choose in that dialog box. I haven't used Word 2003 for some
time but I think the Borders menu choice is in the format menu. In Word
2010, you can also choose many types of lines by going under the insert
tab
and choosing shapes. However, the only way I have found that will prove
the
line is all the way across the screen is by inserting the line as an
inline

object, and then using the cursor position check where the line should
start, using right arrow and checking again.

Take care.

[JAWS-Users] How do I set my Normal Template?

2011-06-07 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Priyanka and Friends,
Thank you all so much for your help, I got it!
The single line spacing is correct!

But now I need to set my Normal Template to have this work with all the
documents I create.
Plus, right now, the font is not what I want, so after I change, how do I
make that my Default or Normal Template?

I called Freedom Scientific and they told me my problem was a Office 2007
situation and the standard setting as Office 2007 came was double spacing!!

And a 11 point size, plus a weird font!
LOL!
Sounds like Microsoft!
Well, I got the spacing down, but now need to set my Point size and I did,
and my font, which I did, but how do I make that my Normal Template?

Thanks for all your assistance!

Hi Alan,
As you have mentioned about the line spacing in word 2007 using jaws
11 is very simple what you have to do is as follows
1. press Alt key to go to ribbon tool bar
2. now go to home tab option by pressing right or left arrow by
default home tab is the first option on the tool bar
3. now press down arrow and u will start hearing options and now you
can use right or left arrows to navigate
4. now you will hear paragraph group box in this you will find the
line spacing option and when you press enter on this option of line
spacing you will get lot of other options like spacing before
paragraph or after and so on
now you can choose your suitable option and move on
you can fuind styles menu in home tab itself.
iI beg your pardon if I have explained anything wrong or in an
unclear manner. My intention was to help you .

Straight from the jaws lab: Text Analyzer
When editing a document using speech only, inconsistencies such as
unmatched

parentheses, unintentional format changes, extra whitespace, and stray or
unspaced punctuation can often be missed. The new Text Analyzer feature is
a

tool that notifies you of these errors in your document by using a spoken
message or WAV file. You can configure JAWS to announce discrepancies by
count, by description, or by sound while proofreading the document by
line,

sentence, paragraph, or Say All command. Braille users will benefit from
this since a sound can be emitted before the user has time to read the
entire line looking for errors.

Text Analyzer is off by default. To turn it on, do one of the following:

Use the new layered keystroke, INSERT+SPACEBAR, T. By pressing and
releasing
INSERT+SPACEBAR, and then pressing T, the Text Analyzer can be toggled on
or

off.
Use the Adjust JAWS Options dialog box (INSERT+V) to select Text Analyzer,
and then select the type of alert notification to use.
Use Settings Center. Press INSERT+F2 and select Settings Center. In the
Search edit box, type Text Analyzer, press DOWN ARROW to move to Text
Analyzer in the filtered results, and press SPACEBAR to select an alert
notification.
If multiple issues are identified in the document, press ALT+WINDOWS Key+I
to move to the next item, or ALT+SHIFT+WINDOWS Key+I to move to the
previous
item. Note that these keystrokes can still be used even if Text Analyzer
is

off.

[JAWS-Users] I get it also! Outlook Express Message

2011-05-21 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear David and Mike,
I have the same situation, and get the exact same error message, but only in
my Deleted items folder!

I mean, it was not always this way, about 6 months ago, it started.

I used to Compact All Folders, from wherever I was, I mean in whatever
folder I was in, and it would compact all folders.

Now, I have to Compact each folder one at a time, and the Deleted Folder
will not compact, but gives that exact error message.

I do not care about it, it is not a problem, as my Deleted Folder is usually
empty anyway, but it is strange!
Because even if I had no other applications or whatever running or open, I
get that message!

And David, Thanks for the tip, but that did not work, still got the error
message!

[JAWS-Users] Spell Checker in Outlook Express is acting really weird since instalation of Office 2007

2011-05-20 Thread Alan Dicey
Dear Friends,

My Spell Checker in Outlook Express is acting really weird after I
installed Office 2007

It wants to capitalize each word, and some words that are perfectly correct it
wants to change, for example why it wants to change to wh!

I think I remember seeing something regarding this about a year or so ago, but
I am not sure.

Any one remember that thread, and what was the final conclusion?

The Spell checker is working fine in Word, and set to automatic.

But is completely useless in Outlook Express.

I am using XP-Home, and JAWS 11, and now have Office 2007 installed.

Thanks for any help!

 Alan,
Microsoft Office 2007 does not support Outlookk Express, and the spell
checker it uses there is in French. You'll need to get another spell
checker for english in Outlook Express if you use one there.

[JAWS-Users] Problem with word2003

2011-05-19 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Friends,
I never had a problem with JAWS 11 and Word 2003.
All was perfect!

But I remember hearing of this problem some time back, even perhaps a year
ago, but do not remember the fix for it.

Perhaps some one else remembers it?

Good luck

I'm not sure whether this has been dealt with yet, but your friend's
problem is a jaws one, not office 2003.

Try unloading and reloading jaws, or use an earlier version. On my work
pc, with jaws 11 as default, I need to switch to the only other version
available on this pc regularly, even though it's version 8 of jaws, to
eliminate this annoying jaws bug.

HI list,

A friend of mine is having a challenge with his windows xp system
running
jfw11 and word 2003. Since the weekend, the PC cursor is reporting
blank on
every document even though when he switches to the jaws cursor he can
see
there is text there. The computer is working fine in all other areas
except
for word. We've tried maximising parent and child windows, resetting
the
zoom in view. Deleting and rebuilding the normal document template, and
checking everything in the configuration manager's cursor options.

We're now to the idea of reinstalling office, but before we did that, I
wanted to see if anyone may have any other suggestions.

Thanks for any suggestions.

[JAWS-Users] [JAWS used to be flawless, well almost!

2011-05-17 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello David and Friends,
I still have my Gateway Windows 98 First Edition set up and loaded with
JAWS 5.0
I ran JAWS 3.3, and indeed 3.7 was great, 4 was horrible, but 4.5 and
version 5 was great also!

Never had a problem with any of the JAWS versions except JAWS 4.0,
So even way back then, HJ or Freedom Scientific made mistakes!

Yes, the Windows 98 machine is still working like it did the day I took it
out of the carton back in February 1999.

I just fired it up today, because I am going to put Office 2007 on my Dell
XP-Home, and if I get sick of trying to learn those stupid Ribbons, I can
kick on my 98 machine and do some work with the Word 2000 that is on the
machine!

Any recommendation is much appreciated.

Hi Kimsan;

The name of the program is, IZArc , but, rather than giving a direct
download link I chose to download it put it into My Dropbox so, if
others

were interested they could get it as well, in case others had problems
finding the download link. Hope this helps. Take care.

[JAWS-Users] question: Number Row or Num Pad

2011-04-16 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Friends,
Please help clear up a debate I and some friends had concerning those folks,
using JAWS, and who must be very fast on their Keyboards, and will need to
use numbers a lot during a telephone conversation, i.e., Customer Services,
Reservationists, Telephone Sales.
Do those of you who fall into these categories for employment use the
Number Row to input numbers while speed typing to keep up with a person on
the telephone,

Or
Do you hit your Num Locks Key, and use you or number pad?

I myself would feel worried about using my Num Pad, as I often use the
Num Pad for JAWS or Windows commands, even routing PC to JAWS.

And I might forget or might get tired of turning it on and off all the time!
Although I must say, I input numbers much faster using the Num Pad!

Thanks for any comments.

Alan

Dear Chris,
There is a real simple, very small program completely JAWS friendly I use

It is a calendar type program.

Perhaps some on this list are using it, as I sent it around to many folks

[JAWS-Users] PDF Files

2011-01-30 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Friends,
I never receive many PDF Files, and the ones I do are usually advertising,
so I never bother with them.

I am sorry if this question sounds stupid, but instead of worrying about
Adobe which I have not really had any success with for years, if I ever
receive anything important, can I simply print out the PDF file, and scan it
with Open Book?

I mean, there is an option to print out the PDF file correct?

Once again, I apologize if this is off the wall, just never had any luck
with using Adobe .

I am a pretty lame JAWS user!

Hi Guys,

I am very new to JAWS, so I apologise in advance for my lack of knowledge.
I have been sent a PDF form and have been assured that it is accessible
and

can be completed and then printed off.

I have never opened a PDF on Windows before as I am generally a Mac user,
but sadly VoiceOver on the Mac does not play nicely with Adobe products.

I opened the PDF in Adobe Acrobat 10 and the version of JAWS is 11.
Should
the PDF start reading automatically? I have tabbed around and also hit
the

arrow keys, but nothing seems to happen.

I can get the application menus to work, but I can't seem to get JAWS to
speak anything on the 7 page document. I have enough sight to see that it
is not a blank page.

Do I have to do anything specific with a interactive form? Or is there a
keyboard shortcut I am not pressing to tell JAWS to start reading the PDF?

Many thanks in advance and if anyone would rather discuss this off list,
then feel free to email me.

Hi Alan

Why bother with printing it at all?

Open OpenBook and open the pdf file there and OB will do what is needed to
read it to you!

Just like you get paper stuff through your post to read you just scan it,
having the computer copy of something just cuts out the scanning bit.

You can print anything you produce to the OpenBook Virtual printer, I'm
pretty sure of that but if I'm wrong someone will correct me!

[JAWS-Users] My cheap way of writing checks

2010-10-14 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Tom,
Incredible, I did the same thing!
Works just fine!

The only inconvenience is that I must attach the check to a standard piece
of paper, using Scotch Magic Tape #811, which does not really stick
permenatly , to the upper left hand corner of the paper.

Perhaps because I have an old HP 950 c Printer?

But it does not mess up the paper, and works perfectly!

Being the kind of person who likes to do it cheap, and do it myself,
I made a template in MS Excell.
I started out by making photo copies of my checks. You can see how cheap
I

am. I didn't even want to waste real checks.
Then by trial and error I adjusted cells and columns and rows until I have
things reasonably lined up, and can get the words and numbers in the right
places.
I even have a file of checks that are repeating, so I only have to change
the date each time I write them.
I'd be willing to share the template, but It may need to be adjusted to
match your printer
Email me at the above address if you want it.

I thought about buying this kind of software, but the cost of the checks

prohibitive. If somebody has figured out a work-around to avoid this cost

[JAWS-Users] Voice Settings

2010-09-10 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Kerry,
I am also working on how to figure out this mess FS created with setting up
and setting each of the Solo-Direct voices profiles.

It is not easy, not hard, but very very tricky!

If I figure it out, to the point I can write about it, I shall let you know!

Strange FS does not post a darn thing on this subject on their web site!

But does that surprise you?
Not me!

Hi List,

I've been brushing up on my jaws skills lately and I'm slightly stumped on
what I've done wrong.

I'm using jfw version 11.0.1467 and I'm trying to sort out the voice
profiles. When I open them, I don't see the dialogue that I know is
supposed to be there for changing the Synthesizer language. Can anyone
tell

me what to do to make it reappear? Or am I looking in the wrong place.

Thanks loads.

[JAWS-Users] Question about first version of JAWS

2010-09-04 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Friends,
Yes, JAWS 3.7 was excellent, but So was JAWS 3.3 and JAWS 3.5!

Funny, we did not have any problems with the program back then, nor did we
expect to!

Not till JAWS 4.0, that was Ted Henter's first disaster!
But with 4.5 everything was fixed, and JAWS 5.0 was excellent also just like
JAWS 6.0

So strange we now expect problems with JAWS, and sure enough they are there!

Chris,

Did you have one of those landmark birthday's recently? What is with
all of
the looking back? Smile!!

Yes, for me it was JAWS 4.something. I moved over kicking and
screaming. I
was not happy about my employer refusing to support Artic and Magic by
MicroSystem. Magic would not work with JAWS and I had to use ZoomText.
Looking back, it was a necessary and good move.

[JAWS-Users] Problem with real speak solo voices? Yes!

2010-08-26 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Carliss, and Fellow List Members,
Yes, I am having this problem in Word doc files!
At first it seemed so Terrible, but it so sporadic!
That is some times it happens and some times not!
I have no idea what causes this, but when I have this problem, I just try
again to have JAWS read all the way down with the JAWS key plus 8 on the
number pad!
Some times I have to hit this key combination 2, 3, even 4 times, but it
finally does get started to the point where it reads all the way down!

Very Strange!

I am using JAWS 11 latest version XP-Home.

Anyone else besides we two having this problem???

Is anyone else having or had this problem? If so, how did you fix it if you

It doesn't matter where I am on the computer be it email, internet, or

[JAWS-Users] Do you need JAWS speech to have FS help with Tandem

see if they could hook up a Tandem to her computer, she has JAWS 10.

A tech support person said No the computer needed JAWS speech!

But I had a friend one time, who once had No JAWS speech and had FS hook
up with the Tandem feature!

Which is it?

[JAWS-Users] A talking clock

2010-07-25 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear David and Fellow List Members,
But I thought all versions of Windows comes with a talking clock!

I mean, I hold down the JAWS key, (0 on the num pad) and hit F12 and I get
JAWS speaking the time.

To get the Day and Date I hit it twice in rapid succession.

If you do not mind, I will tell you what a group of Blind Chess enthusiasts
are desperately looking for, a computerized Chess Clock, that is a clock
with two times, one for you and one for your opponent, which you can stop
and start, like a pair of Timers.

Has anyone seen anything like this that is JAWS friendly?

I have seen some Chess Clocks on web sites before, but they do not work at
all with JAWS.

Thanks for any assistance in this matter.

Unicode can handle all of the characters required for all of the world's
languages. If you are using English and your reader will most likely be
using English, the As is option will work fine.

[JAWS-Users] Desperate for Yahoogroups tutorial

2010-04-24 Thread Alan Dicey
Hello Friends,
I have succeeded in setting up a yahoogroups list for our
United States Braille Chess Association,
because our Topica list no longer responds to any commands, and we have not
been able to contact their support department after several months.

Yes, it is set up , pesky captures and such, but it was with a great amount of
assistance from others, and I need to learn how to manage it myself, and also
the people I have assigned as moderators need to learn all about the
different functions.

Yahoogroups is not what I would call a JAWS friendly program.
And I would compare it to learning Microsoft Word or Excel!
Word and Excel are easier in my opinion!
At least they have command keys, and menu bars!

Can anyone please help me find a Tutorial for learning how to manage a
yahoogroups list?

We would even be willing to pay for it.

Can anyone also give me Kathy, oh I forgot her last name, the lady that does
the Special Access training, and produces tutorials email address so I can
find out if she can assist us?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi All.

I was playing around with googletalk and find that if you play using
the jaws cursor the itt is ok, but was wondering if there is a
accessible client that works with jaws.

Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Word backups

2009-10-15 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Vicki,
I think doing a Search would help you find your Word Backup files!

Just type *.Wbk and see what that does!

I do not have my Word set to save backups, on the computer I am using now,
but I did in a previous computer, and I even had to do this once in a
while to delete all my Word Back Up files!

Interesting. I have the backup feature checked and time marked, but it
doesn't seem to be working. I'll have to do some more digging and see what
the problem is. In prier versions of Word, I know there was a folder under
Microsoft Office Word where all the backups went, but I can't find that
either. Thank you for looking.

Hi Vicki,
I Googled word 2003 backups stored in and got a page containing:
This info applies to versions up through 2003.

When you turn on the backup
feature, Word saves backup files by appending or prepending some special
text to your file name. In some versions of Word, the WBK filename
extension

is
used instead of the familiar DOC. In other versions of Word, the DOC
extension is used by Word adds the phrase Backup of to the beginning of
the document
name.

Let's say that you have two directories, and in each one you have
different

documents but each has the same name, as in MyLetter.doc. If you have
backups
turned on, and Word allows you to specify where the backups are placed,
then

the names for the backups of the two different files would be the same
(either
MyLetter.wbk or Backup of MyLetter.doc), and two files with the same name
cannot be saved in the same folder. The solution is for Word to simply
keep

the
backup copy of a document in the same folder as the original copy. That
way,

you don't run into naming conflicts at all.

Jon

Re: [JAWS-Users] outlook express Imp

2009-10-15 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Friends,
I have not allowed my Automatic Updates to continue for a few months,
since I read about the I. E. 7 situation, as I only have JAWS 9.0156 on my
XP-Home machine!

I am not worried so much about Security,as I am about downloading
something in the Windows Updates that will mess up a perfectly working
system, my thinking, is of course:

If it ain't broke, don't fix it

And as I said things are just working so perfectly, two (2) T-Drives,
fantastic sound system, no problems with JAWS or anything!

Can anyone tell me why I should allow the updates, and if so, what should I
be weary of?

I do not want to update to JAWS 10 nor 11 at this time, and JAWS 9 is
working fine, but will any of the current updates mess up JAWS 9.0156?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide me in the way of information!

With Best Regards,
Alan

or software that was causing the outlook express settings from being
automagically changed, I suspect something is messed up in one of the
system

files. I did some internet searching and found a few year old post about
similar problems and that there was a security update. Even though I have
auto updates checked I went to look for updates to Microsoft software.
There

were quite a few that I installed. about 25 including some driver updates.
Only time will tell if this corrected the problem. There is one thing
that

I installed that I will remove something about a windows search procedure.
On the task bar it states indexing complete. The one big problem that I
had

with the driver updates was one was for my video. When the computer
restarted it was checked to install the video intercept for Jaws. I could
only read that line. It took my wife, sighted, to click on the install
button. Not sure why I could not read anything else on the screen with
either cursor. It took about six hours for all of the updates.

Dear List

I have access to UK Eloquence voices which are very good but Sight and
Sound assure me I did not get them with Jaws which is a bit confusing.

The voices show up under a category called Speechworks and, in addition
to
the normal Shelley, Glen Reed voices etc, there are UK voices called
Justin

,Jane , and another I cannot remember the name of, available

My problem is that I want to move these voices onto my new Netbook for
use
there and although Jaws has installed fine these voices are not
available.

My problem is remembering what it is I have installed which has given me
access to these UK English Eloquence Voices. I have Kurzweil and Zoomtext
installed in the past but as far as I am aware these programs do not have
Eloquence voices. Years ago I tried Dragon Naturally speaking but again I
do

not think Eloquence voices came with this.

Does anybody know where Eloquence Speechwork voices came from?

I have them on my machine but cannot tell how I got them - very odd.

I have searched on Google to no avail.

David Griffith

[JAWS-Users] Fixing escape button

2009-08-20 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Barbara,
I know this sounds ridiculous, but since you are planning to purchase a new
keyboard anyway, you have nothing to lose!

What worked for me more than once, is:

I went crazy on the key, that did not work!
Like I mean a Woody Wood Pecker, on steroids!

Hit it about 20 times hard, with your finger of course, what do you have to
lose!

Seriously, I did this a couple of times on keys that nothing else worked to
get them working, and

Eureka!

Worked!

Good Luck!

do.
1. Open Find Replace.
2. On the find tab press Jaws /insert key + 4 on the number row above the
letters. This is the keystroke for selecting an extended ansy character
from a list.
3. Arrow down until you find the bullit you want. There are 2 bullit
sizes,

large small.
4. Press enter on the bullit size of choice. This places that choice
into

the find dialogue box.
5. Tab to replace, but don't put anything in the replace dialogue box.
6. Tab to replace all and press enter.
7. Press space bar on okay and close.

Hope this helps. Take care.

nk497 http://www.itpro.co.uk/ writes: The release candidate for
Microsoft Windows 7 will expire June 2010, and the software giant will let
users know they need to pay to upgrade by shutting down the system every
two hours for three months.

http://www.itpro.co.uk/blogs/daveyw/2009/05/07/has-microsoft-gone-mental/
According to Microsoft: The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on
March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows
will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. *To avoid
interruption, you'll need to install a non-expired version of Windows
before March 1, 2010*. You'll also need to install the programs and data
that you want to use.

*Windows 7 RC's 'Free' Reign To End With Auto-Shutdowns*
By Gregg Keizer
06.05.2009 kl 18:40 | IDG News Service
What Microsoft gives, it takes away.
With the launch of Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) Tuesday, anyone can
get their hands on a copy of the final public preview and, according to
Microsoft, use it until Aug. 1, 2010, when the RC expires. But, most
users won't want to use it for the entire 13 months Microsoft has
allotted.
For the RC, bi-hourly shutdowns will begin March 1, 2010, said
spokesman Brandon LeBlanc in just one of several warnings Tuesday that
Microsoft gave RC users of an earlier deadline.

http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windows7/archive/2009/05/05/the-windows-7-release-candidate-rc-is-here.aspx

*As it did with *Windows Vista's previews*, Microsoft will start *_pushing
users to upgrade_* to the real thing by automatically shutting down, then
restarting, PCs equipped with Windows 7 RC three months before the build
officially expires.

http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9017728

You will be alerted to install a released version of Windows and your PC
will shut down automatically every 2 hours [starting March 1, 2010], said
LeBlanc. On June 1, 2010, if you are still on the Windows 7 RC, your
license for the Windows 7 RC will expire and the non-genuine experience is
triggered. At that point, LeBlanc continued, the copy will be marked as
bogus, with on-screen nags and a black background.
*Unless users are prepared to put up with the automatic reboots -- which
come without warning and so may cause data loss -- they'll have to give up
Windows 7 RC on the last day of February 2010, about 10 months after it
went public.*
Windows 7 Beta, which Microsoft launched last January, will start
rebooting even earlier -- July 1, said LeBlanc -- a month before it
expires.
Earlier, Computerworld reported that users could run Windows 7 RC for 13
months, and compared that favorably to Vista RC's shorter free periods.
Actually, with the Windows 7 RC shutdown looming three months before
expiration, the new operating system's free run is similar to Vista RC's.

http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9132397

In 2007, Vista RC1 and RC2 started rebooting on June 1, nine-and-a-half
and nine months, respectively, after they were released. Those previews
actually expired Aug. 28, 2007, nearly three months after the reboots
began. *Window 7 RC, at 10 months between release and auto-reboot, gives
users _only several weeks, not several months, more free time than they
got with Vista_*.

I suggest making plans to move to a released version of Windows well
before the automatic shutdowns start to occur to prevent data loss,
LeBlanc urged.

Microsoft posted Windows 7 RC to its site yesterday, and although there
were reports of slow download speeds, the company's servers withstood the
load, unlike in January, when they folded under the crush of users rushing
to get the beta.

http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9132543
http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9125586

Windows 7 RC will be available for downloading through at least the end of
July, Microsoft has promised.

[JAWS-Users] I'm having a problem when using Capital letters whencreating the message rule!

2009-05-05 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Friend,
I use message rules quite often, and yes you are correct!

when you use capital letters when where the to line contains people or the
subject line contains specific words, that I've noticed that I have an
apostrophe before the capital letter.

I have always just ignored this, and the Rules work fine.

I would suggest you just ignore it also.

Just one of those things, one never understands about Windows!

But if it is working, no reason to try to fix it, my Father always said!

Hi list members, has anyone noticed that when they create message rules
that when you use capital letters when where the to line contains people
or the subject line contains specific words, that i've noticed that i have
an apostrophy before the capital letter. I'm not sure why this happens.
P.S. I've also noticed that when words are connected as an example,
BlindGeeks i've needed to make sure that in the dictionary, that i have to
separate the words in order to make sure that i hear the words properly.

If anyone has noticed this please let me know how to fix this problem.
Thank you.

[JAWS-Users] what does this computer error mean Web Site

2009-04-04 Thread Alan Dicey

Subject: what does this computer error mean

We all get an error message on our computer screen and most of the time, we
don't know what it means or how to fix it. Am I right? It's especially
annoying when you have to get past the error in order to complete a task.
Well, it doesn't have to be so difficult to figure out what the error is and
how to fix it.

Most of you probably have no one to turn to when you receive an error
message. That is, until now! Here's a Website you can visit to find out what
an error message means and how you can easily fix it. The name of the Web
site is What Does This Error Mean?

At the site, you can copy and paste or type your error message in to the box
on the site and simply wait for your results, or you can browse through the
most recent and most common errors.

Let's use error #404 as an example. Its explanation is Server not found.
Go ahead and copy and paste that into the box and then hit the Find Me Some
Help button. The results are immediately shown. If you think you can add
some information to this error, or any error messages on the site, you're
free to do so. That way, everyone benefits! If you'd like to keep tabs on a
certain error for when its information is updated, you can do so by clicking
on the Follow This Error button. You can also browse through the most recent
error messages by clicking on the Browse button at the top of the page. It
will show you the name of the error message and how many solutions it has. I
hope this helps ease your error message headaches!

[JAWS-Users] Windows Media Player verses winamp535

2009-03-23 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Folks,
I did not mean to start a thread on Winamp verses Window Media Player, but
since it is started I will tell you my experiences on why I did not install
Winamp!

A good friend, a person in the know, sent me winamp5541_full with
instructions on how to install it.

However, so many folks on one of the list groups I am on, which includes
this gentleman who first responded to my message, I think it is Chris
Hallsworth, kept writing messages to the list, a lot and lot of messages,
stating this version was not very JAWS friendly, in fact it was full of
problems for a JAWS user, and one should use an older version winamp535 or
something like that.

Well, they just scared me off, and I just decided to not install either, the
new version, or the old version, but stick with Microsoft's product, the
program they support and which came with my computer, Windows Media Player.

That's it!

End of Story, and I hope end of this thread.

Thanks for all who contributed to sending me training texts and sites where
I can learn more about this Windows Media Player program.

David I think sent me one such tutorial, and I thank him, it looks very
in-depth, but it is something like 55 pages, and I intend to study it, but
in the meanwhile, I just thought some one could give me a simple 1 2 3 on
how to create a playlist.

Thanks to all.

With Best Regards,
Alan

Apparently W M Player is not very JAWS Friendly, but I do not want to try

the fact that it is a pivotal Windows keystroke would indicate that it

Even after a re-start, I am faced with the same thing.

The thing is, Donald, when I press the alt key, I get the standard file
menus, and can arrow through them all, however, if I go to the left, of
the
file menu, or the right of the help menu, I just wrap around to the
first
menu, when these actions should take me to the system menu, so, as you
can
see, it's as if the menu isn't there, even though I can reach it with
the
Jaws cursor.

Very perplexing indeed. Grins.

Hi Alan,

Another much faster way of doing this is to paste the message into a
WordPad

document, which opens a lot faster than Microsoft Word, and doing the same
thing of finding and replacing the greater symbols and leaving the
replacement field blank.

Tab to the replace all button and press the spacebar.

This also does it a lot faster than word.

Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] Getting rid of greater signs in a message

2009-02-02 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Friends,
You can always paste a messy message you might have received into a Word
.doc file, then just hit Control H, which is Find and Replace use the
greater sign to find, and leave the Replace blank.

It will leave the message clean of those messy greater signs, and your
recipients will appreciate it!

I do it with about half the forwarded messages I in turn wish to forward.

It only takes a couple of seconds!

Alan

Hi Lenny,

While you have the pasted document in Word you can add or delete anything
you want before you copy and paste it to the clipboard. Take care.

Not in outlook Express per se. Rather, it is a result of the copy full
screen content in internet Explorer and other html formatted documents.
If

you use SayAll instead, you will not see the cell problem much.

I find it annoying in some emails jaws reads cell in the beginning of each
line. Today there was an email that I wanted to send to someone that had a
lot of greater signs also at the beginning of each line. Trying to use
e-cleaner to remove the greater signs it did not work since when I copied
it

put everything into one cell.
I would guess that this is something in outlook express but haven't found
it.Any ideas?

I now hear collapsed before unread. When I delete I receive a warning

parts of the conversation will be deleted.
Any idea how to correct this?

[JAWS-Users] Hello Holger , Answering your Question on the Seagate manager

2009-01-30 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Holger ,
I just purchased a Seagate Terabyte external Hard Drive, and it did also
come with the Seagate Manager.

I opened it once saw it was not JAWS Friendly and have ignored it for the
two months I have had the hard drive now.

I suggest you keep it however, it does not take up much space, and perhaps
one of these Days some one will write scripts for it.

And then we will see if it is helpful to us!

[JAWS-Users] Hello David, Seagate External Hard drives

2009-01-30 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello David,
Well, No, I purchased the Seagate Terabyte External Hard Drive at Staples,
which is like Office Max, or Office Depot.

It was on SALE, cost $139, and the regular price in that store was $200.
I just had DSL installed for my new Dell, running XP, and since I was
downloading so fast, I started collecting stuff!!
In fact, I collected as much in two (2) months as I had collected in 10
years with my Dial-out modem, and my old Gateway running Windows 98 (First
Edition) (Smmile) !
Hey, I still have it set up next to my new Dell, it is still working, and
since it has two (2) hard drives, I use it for stuff!

I am going back this weekend to get another one, and hope it is still on
Sale.
Not because I believe I will fill up the Terabyte, but I want to back up
everything I have on one to the other.
What I am downloading is very precious to me, and do not want to even take a
one in a million chance of losing it!

Not that I do not trust Seagate, I have a 30 GB Seagate for almost 7 years
it is in my old Gateway, and it is smooth as a whisper!

I also purchased a Seagate external Hard Drive 30 MB for $900 back in 1985!!
Yes, $900, not a typo! (Smile)

It was still running when I dumped the IBM PC I used it with!!

Darn, I should have kept that thing, it might be an antique now!!

Oh yes, the applications that came with the Seagate Terabyte were just too
graphical, I could not use JAWS with them.
My wife was explaining the graphics to me, and it seem they were just simple
directory type Applications.

So, I just ignored them!

With Best Regards,
Alan

Is that the drive that Tiger direct has right now for 119.95? I ask
because

I picked up a Sea Gate a couple of years ago from them and it didn't come
with any software at all. I just plugged it in and it was off to the
races.

In other words these are some screen reader friendly external drives. Mine
is a 320 which is now over half full.

Hello Everyone,

I'm a new member to this group, and I wanted to introduce myself. My
name

is Jack. I've been a JAWS user since 1999. I started out with Jaws 3.0.
I'm now using Jaws 10. I'm 45 years old and I live in Ohio. I'll keep
this
brief so as not to take up your time. I hope to learn from others and
share

what I know where I'm able.
Jack

Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange Google Problem

2009-01-27 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Folks,

Yes, I think it is simply Google doing some NEW crap!

I am sure it has nothing to do with JAWS or any antivirus program!

Really bugs me!

Best regards,

It's been going on for a while now and guess it's a change on Google's
part not ours.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Strange Google Problem

Hi Listers. I use Google as my primary search engine, and starting
yesterday, for no apparent reason that I can determine, JAWS started
announcing Promote button and Remove button after every heading in
the search results when I arrow down line by line from a heading.
However, hitting Space or Enter on these objects has no effect, so they
cannot be activated. I have not changed any settings in IE 7. This is a
minor annoyance, but I would still like to know what the heck is going
on. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Gerald
