[JAWS-Users] Replay Radio?

2018-07-18 Thread JM Casey
Hey folks.

I was looking through a bunch of old stuff, and came across a backup I made
of this software years ago along with recordings of my old radio show. I
used it on an XP machine, and at that time it was at version 7. I remember
it was a very neat programme and also rather accessible without much
fiddling around.

Out of curiosity I did a google search and was slightly surprised to
discover that Replay is still around. They're at version 11 now and from
looking at their page it seems like they focus a lot more on mobile devices
and a subscription service. They are also touting this "media guide" as the
best way to use the thing, but I wouldn't be likely too interested in that.
I'd probably just want to plug in a URL and port number and time like I used
to do and have the programme record while I'm away from the computer. As
this was a nice programme back in the day and came bundled with a few useful
utilities, though, I wondered if anyone still uses it? Has the experience
changed much?

Re: [JAWS-Users] going back to previous version of jaws

2018-07-18 Thread JM Casey
That seems like a lot of trouble to go through just to visit a website.

Although I understand problems can occur, JAWS versions are *supposed* to
operate independently and you are *supposed* to be able to have as many
different versions installed on your machine as you like. Now I'm curious if
people have run into problems with shared dlls or whatever?

I have a friend who needs to use Jaws version 14 for a particular web site.

I have advised her to uninstall all later versions of Jaws before installing
version 14.

Does she also need to uninstall shared components?

Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Any tips on reading websites with text in graphics?

2018-07-18 Thread JM Casey
Try converting the page to a PDF file. In Windows 10 you can do this with
"microsoft pdf printer" or something like that (sorry, I can't remember the
name) using the print option in your browser. Once that's done, you can try
using the JAWS OCR feature to recognise text within graphics.

This might work in theory, but to be honest, I haven't had a great time with
JAWS OCR at all. Fortunately Adobe Acrobat Pro + Windows 10 can oCR
documents on their own.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Updating to 2018 from 15

2018-07-18 Thread JM Casey
Your JAWS will just install independently of the previous version. JAWS 15
will still be on your computer and available.

As for outlook, you should probably export (read back up) your data just in
case. However it is supposed to not touch such things. Indeed, when I made
the switch from Outlook 2010 a few weeks back, I didn't have to use the
backup.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Filling out a Form from a PDF File

You should be able to do this using Acrobat. If it doesn't work, it's likely
that the form is not configured correctly by the person(s) who created it.
You'd likely have to take it up with them, in that case. In my experience,
most government-related forms in Canada and the US are perfectly accessible,
but mileage with other things may vary.

It sounds like you want to purchase Office 2016, and not Office 365, which
is a subscription-based service. For multiple licenses, I think you'll need
to get at least the home/business version. As far as I know there are three

Ok. I just did this about a month ago for my old Office 2010 instalation,
because it would actually not let me uninstall it until I had performed a
repair as something was broken. I'm now looking at Office 2016 in control
panel, and I do not see a repair option. I discovered though that I can do this
through the "modify" button in the settings app. Unfortunate as I much prefer
control panel, but it seems Microsoft considers the settings app to be priority
now and is trying to get people to use that for most things. The control
panel/settings dichotomy is one of the most hilarious things about Windows 10,
which is an oS I generally do like.

However, you might have this option in Control panel, especially as you are
using an older version of Office. , so I'll try and tell you what I did. No
guarantees that this won't be slightly different for your experience, but try
this:

Hit windows key + r to open the run dialog box.
Type "control" (without quotes obviously) and hit enter Control panel will open.
Hit "p" three times or so, and "programs and features" will be announced.
Hit enter.
Now you can use first letter navigation to get to your "microsoft office".
Hit the applications key and you should see, at the very least, "uninstall"
and "change". Maybe there will also be a "repair" option there. If not, try
"change" and see what happens. Once you pick an option from that menu, remember
that the user account control box will likely open and you will have to hit
alt-y to click "yes".

If you have to do this through the settings app instead, as I now apparently
do, the steps will be a bit different. The way I get there is to hit windows
key to open the search box, and type "apps". You should hear "apps and
features" if you do this. You can hit enter there. You'll see a list of
installed stuff. Unfortunately these pesky new Windows apps won't let you use
first letter navigation, so you'll just have to use your arrow keys and/or page
down until you get to what you want, or you can type "office"
into the search box, which will probably also work.

Read this page for more help with this.
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Repair-an-Office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b

I sympathise if you find this method a little annoying; I personally wish
Microsoft just kept everything in control panel, but that's just not the way
it's going.

Just remember that Windows 10 has native support for zip archives. So

Windows 10 treats zip files as folders. So when you press enter, you should
actually be inside the zip archive and able to view and even work with the
individual files.

The options in the context menu will probably say "extract", which is what
you want to do if you want to dump all the files from the zip archive into
an actual folder on your system.

Using JAWS 2018, Word 13 and Windows 10 on a Dell laptop, I am having a really
odd problem.

When I go to open Word 13, I get several strange messages. The first one says
that I do not have sufficient memory or disk space to perform the requested
operation. When I press enter on the “okay” button, wordword opens a blank
document. Another time, after attempting to open word 13, I got a message that
there are too many fonts to open the document.

Has anyone ever gotten these messages, and if so, what was the solution, if
there is one? Thanks in advance.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Opening a Zipped File

2018-07-16 Thread JM Casey
What happens when you press enter on the file(s?) Does the "open with"
dialogue open?

Windows 10 treats zip files as folders. So when you press enter, you should
actually be inside the zip archive and able to view and even work with the
individual files.

The options in the context menu will probably say "extract", which is what
you want to do if you want to dump all the files from the zip archive into
an actual folder on your system.

Cheers, Mike; glad you got it sorted. I remembered this because I was poking

want first navigation, so really, you should have both available to you!

Hey.

There is a setting in file explorer options, in the tree view under the
"view" tab, which says "automatically type into the search box". You'll find
this under 'when typing in the list view", I believe. Maybe this setting is
checked in your new account.

Hi

I recently added a 2nd administrator account to a Windows 10 1803 computer
When I am logged onto that account and navigate into a folder, I can use
first letter navigation to find the file I want and press enter to open it.
But when I am logged onto the new User account and navigate into a folder,
when I press a key for first letter navigation, a search box appears

So are there settings which will make first letter navigation in the new

I will be sincerely grateful for any assistance.

Thank you in advance.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Have to get new MS office suite

2018-07-12 Thread JM Casey
I think Outlook 2010 has the ribbon. Must have been the first one.

I agree that the risk shouldn't be that great. Starting with maybe 2007 or
2010, Microsoft changed the default extensions for documents and created a
different set for documents that were macro-enabled. As far as I know,
macros are the biggest potential vulnerability for non-network/sharing
users. If you get a word document that has the .docx extension, for
instance, it can't contain any macros. In theory, macros are all fine and
good, but if you receive a file from the internet and it has the wrong
extension, and you're not expecting anything fancy, you know something weird
is up. In other words, use good sense and you should be ok.

However, you have that programme that enables you to acquire newer versions,
so there's no reason (imo) not to take advantage of it.

Unfortunately, the newer Office suites have gone to the ribbon type menu, so
it will be different than Office 2007. I think Outlook did not use ribbons
in 2010 yet, but since your Office 2007 is expiring, I'd guess 2010 is going
to be getting long in the tooth.

You can still use Office 2007, but I think those notifications mean that you
won't get any security rollouts for Office 2007 any more. In just about
every monthly Windows update that comes out on the second Tuesday of the
month, there are usually updates for various Office programs. I have Office
2010 Pro and routinely receive updates for the program, Word 2010, Excel and
Outlook quite often; almost every month.

So, you can use 2007, I suspect, but you just won't get any security
patches. So, it is use-at-your-own-risk. Personally, I don't think the
risk is as great as it is with using a web browser or an out-of-date Windows
system, but I don't want to overly minimalize the risks.

In other words, if you choose to use Office 2007, just beware that there
will be some inherent vulnerabilities the longer you go past the
end-of-support period.

We just upgraded to Office 365 from Thunderbird email client and Office
2010. I don't do much with Word, but with O365 I didn't need to uninstall
anything. Just got a Microsoft account, bought the O365 home with 5
connections and so far it's running pretty smoothly. I've never used
Outlook, so I kept Tbird. After a few days (I'll read the FS tutorial on
Outlook I bought recently) I can do everyday stuff like send, receive,
forward, etc. Bottom line, I've not found Office 2016 (which I downloaded)
much different than 2010-especially for Excel which I constantly use. I
even see some benefits to Outlook over Thunderbird. The exchange server we
had to get with O365 works faster and more reliably than our former server
of the POP variety. So..kicking and screaming I upgraded and survived with
a growing smile on my face.

I just upgraded from office 2010 32-bit to 2016 64-bit. I used 2016 before
at my old work and found that it worked really well with jAWS 18 except for
the semi-usual jAWS crashes, which I recently discovered seem less of an
issue if you stick to good ole' Eloquence. I do find that certain things,
like the spell-check, seems to work better in 2016.

I would upgrade to 2016 because it's the latest non-365 version and will
continue to be supported for quite some time.

I made a backup of my outlook data using the export feature. In the end,
even though I had to uninstall Office completely in order to install the new
version, those files were retained in my data folders and so I did not end
up needing to use the backup. The same should be true for you, but just
backup the folders anyway, just in case.

the process was so simple. I kept trying to use the run command and the old

new name. Then nothing. I left it run for over 20 hours with not finishing.
After calling he told me that that will not work. I was to use windows
explorer then f6 to get to the correct area. When I found the ex drive use
the applications key. Arrow down to format and the rest was quite easy. It
took less than 2 minutes to bring my drive from fat32 back to ntfs.

Re: [JAWS-Users] need to read a .BMP file

Huh. It never does, does it? j/k.

I take it then you don't have an OCR package installed on your system? Open
Book is the one Freedom Scientific sells. I always found it prohibitively
expensive. I'm planning to purchase Abbyy Finereader sometime soon as the
price is very reasonable, but I just haven't got round to it, and so I can't
check to see if it can do this, however it is supposed to be able to work on
image files, too, which, I assume, would include .bmps. Even if it doesn't,
you can probably convert the file to a workable format.

Actually that reminds me of something ou could try. In your context menu for
the bitmap image there might be a "convert to adobe PDF" option. I have one,
but I'm not absolutely sure where the menu item comes from -- as in, if it
originates in Windows, or with Adobe Acrobat Pro, which I have on here. In
any case, if you can perform this operation, you could try opening the .pdf
in Reader/Acrobat and then attempting to oCR the document with the JAWS
feature.

have to pull out his computer desk and reach behind to try and find the
cable where it plugs in. If I would have access to the cable that would have
been my first try. Hind sight being 20/20 I should have pulled out his desk.

That won't change the actual language on the page, only the

However that doesn't sound like the problem here; seems like the actual page

Hi,In both Internet Explorer, and on Chrome, I have some pages defaulting to
Mexican. The rest of my computer stays on English, but in Ancestry.com, it
goes to Mexican, as that is what it sounds like, and in the address bar,
there is .MX in place of .Com.So I changed it for a while, and then I went
to check out with PayPal for Ancestry.com, and that came up in Mexican
again, but there was no MX to change here.Jaws reads the page element
controls in English, but the text is in Mexican. This is not on all pages,
or I would not be able to send this message. How does this happen, and how
can I prevent this?I have ad like messages coming up in the title bar too,
apparently in Mexican.I ran Malware Bytes and a full MS Defender scan with
no infections found.Any ideas?Glenn For answers to frequently asked

If it's just on ancestry.com, which is the only site you mentioned -- it's
got something to do with that site specifically. It could be something like
a profile or account setting. Or else, it's a glitch. I searched google and
came up with someone who had a similar problem; nobody replied to him, it
looks like, so maybe it never got resolved.

Hm, that is supposed to be true going the other way (NTFS to Fat), but it
should be able to. Maybe on this particular drive though, it can't, for
whatever reason.

Nevertheless I hope this works on your own drive that was apparently
converted to fat after you restored!

I have probably close to a terabyte of music on my hard drives, and I try to
back it up semi-regularly, and have never run into problems copying so much
data.

However, you can actually convert the drive without reformatting it,
apparently. I say "apparently" because I haven't actually tried it. But
Windows has a command for this. It's called "convert" and you run it from
the command prompt. So open up an administrative command prompt and type
this:
Convert e: /fs:ntfs

Where e: is of course whatever drive letter you end up with.

As I've never done this before, my instinct would still be to copy the files
to a folder on your hd anyway as a backup.

enough hd space. I first thought about trying to copy his ex drive to a new

also thought about trying to use image for windows to back up his ex drive

much data could it get clobbered?

Damn. I'm not really surprised it did that. I think an image is supposed to
be a complete replica of the drive, including filesystem. Why didn't you
just do a straight copy of the data using file explorer?

You could try that convert command again? Seems that you're getting the same
result with the format command though. Strange.

I had the idea to make an image for windows backup of my grandson's ex
drive. Then restore it to my drive before reformatting his. After a 9 hour
backup and a 4 hour restore things became worse. The restore converted my
ntfs drive to a fat32. I made the guess that it just would rewrite the data.
On my 7 machine what is the best way to format my drive back to ntfs? I did
go to run and typed format f: /fs:ntfs It asked for a new label and nothing
since. After a few hours the fat32 information is still there.
I wonder if I should have use the q switch

I found something called "loudness equualization". I checked it, and it
didn't seem to make a positive difference. In fact, it made a weird sudden
volume spike whenever JAWS spoke for the first time in a while. So, I just
unchecked it again. Strange. Seems you didn't check yours anyway, so as mine
was set the same way, I guess this won't solve my little issue.

Hey everyone.

I'm using Windows 10 and JAWS 18. I recently switched back to the Eloquence
synth more-or-less full-time after using Vocalizer for a year. I'm quite
happy, except that I find the synth is too loud, relative to other sounds on
my system. There are no controls for volume in my JAWS options, so I went
into Windows volume mixer and turned it way down, to around 20%, which seems
a level I am happy with. Only thing is, now something strange and slightly
annoying is happening. If I don't use the voice for a little while, as in,
maybe ten seconds or more, when it starts up again, it is quite quiet, and
then gradually increases in volume. It's a small thing but I would kind of
like the volume to remain at a consistent level. I've tried experimenting
with volume levels in Windows to get the perfect balance, but it is
surprisingly difficult. In general I don't want JAWS or system sounds to
overwhelm things like media players, but everything always seems just a
little too loud or too quiet, and of course there are other factors one
always has to consider as well, such as the relative volumes of disparate
media files, which I am ok with as I'm not a fan of auto-normalisation and
such. This thing with JAWS trying to boost its own volume is strange though.

Any thoughts from the group?

[JAWS-Users] JAWS volume and Eloquence

2018-07-04 Thread JM Casey

Re: [JAWS-Users] note on my problem adding Facebook friends

Strange, considering how many friend requests I get from "horny single
women" with whom I have no mutual friends at all and only have one public
post on their timeline inviting people to look at their "naked videos". I
wonder how they manage it?

Just in case others start a new Facebook account, I discovered that Facebook
automatically blocks your adding friends via a request for awhile after the
account is opened. You can accept requests, but cannot add friends or see
posts. Seeing posts will last until you have 10 friends, but how long you
are blocked from requesting friends is up to them. I'm still blocked.

Just wanted to let anyone know that it's not a JAWS issue.

Re: [JAWS-Users] internet explorer 11

2018-07-04 Thread JM Casey
Probably at least til 2020. I think that's when some aspects of Windows 7
support officially end (I'm not sure exactly what aspects; some general support
is supposed to continue until 2025). Windows 7 users will never be on Edge, and
some don't want to move away from Microsoft for browsing, I guess, so it'll
still be around for a bit.

M.facebook.com is fine on Firefox, but I remember you're a big proponent of
Chrome. I'll have to try it with that sometime.

Yeah, increasingly sites will not support it, and Microsoft is pushing Edge so
not doing anything with iE except security updates.

I have heard that some sites, particularly involved with uS government
services, only support IE. I'm not sure if this is true but I know at my old
work IE was the only browser supported by the IT department. So there are
reasons for keeping it around. But for general web use, it's becoming less and
less effective.

Hi LeDon,
This can be accomplished in one of several ways, depending on your keyboard.
The most common way when using a standard keyboard is using the
"Applications" key which is located to the left of the right control key.
If this key is not available, then performing the shift + F10 keystroke will

open the menu.
And, when you have an item selected, performing a right mouse click will
also open the context menu.
Keep in mind that the content of the context menu will change according to
the item selected and even depending on where it is located, IE, specific
applications or the internet.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Downloading Audio Files with Chrome

2018-07-01 Thread JM Casey
I've never heard that "context menu" applies to applications keypress only
and I don't see why it would. They are both, in fact, context menus. The
only thing I don't really understand is why one sometimes offers more
options than the other; hence my calling it "the extended version".

Sighted people usually right click on an item. The numpad star simulates
this action if you are using a screen-reader. Of course your mouse cursor is
not always where you'd expect it to be, if you don't use a mouse.

This is worth clearing up. The following three keystrokes are often
interchangeable, but not always: the applications key (located between the
right-hand Windows and control keys), shift-F10 and the right mouse click
key (numpad star key). Like several other keystrokes, they all open menus
specific to where you are in an application. For whatever reason, it's
called the "context men" when you press the applications key. I don't recall
coming across that term for shift-F10 or the right mouse click.

Again, all three keystrokes typically open the same menu choices, but not
always. If you think an option ought to be available with the applications
key but it doesn't show up, it's worth trying the other two.

Well, that's because it's called the Applications Key. Haha it, or shift-f10
if you want the extended versions, opens up the context menu, which is
called that because it's contextual/dependent on what sort of item you are
focused on.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Changing Voices

2018-06-28 Thread JM Casey
I guess jAWS will work with a lot of SAPI5 voices. I have never tried to
install any, but your Windows computer probably came with the standard
microsoft ones. You can select those from the Jaws, Options, Voices menu.
Select "choose a voice profile".

If you want to download some of the Vocalizer voices, go to the synthesizer
download page at Freedom Scientific. There is a link to it in the JAWS help
menu. On that page, you can select your language, and the type of synth
voice you want, either in a pack with other voices sharing the same
language, or in premium editions as a single voice. The premium downloads
are fairly large; around 300 mb each as I recall. It's an .msi installer
package, so you run it like you would a standard Windows installer and
follow the prompts. Then, restart JAWS, and the new voice(s) will be
available to you.

Ah yes. Now it's all coming back to me. Developer tools, legacy. We did have a
lot of templates, too; I had to check each one of those forms and make sure
they were properly accessible.

Hi Al,

If all you need is to insert form fields for data whose value can only be true
or false, it is not necessary to complicate your life with macros/VBA.
A checkbox form field should be enough.
Regarding the fact JM described you about form creation not being the same on
newer versions of Word, it effectively reffers mostly to an accessibility
consideration. In Word 2007 and later, Microsoft implemented a new thing called
“content controls,” which have existing functionality of classic form fields
but also include capabilities such as deletion when completed which make them
suitable for templates and other content reutilization scenarios.
The problem, as the Freedom Scientific tutorial for creating accessible forms
in Word, is that those new content controls are not currently accessible with
the keyboard. Fortunately Word still has the option, in the Developer tab
together with the new content controls, a split button called “Legacy Control”
which allows you to insert a form field like the ones available in Word 2003
and earlier, which are backward compatible and more accessible with the
keyboard and JAWS.

Hope it helps!

I used to be able to do this in Word 2016 at my old work, but I don't think
I ever tried it with Word 2010, which I don't have anymore. I also can't
really remember the steps I used at the time, though I could probably do
some research and/or jog my memory. I believe I might have read somewhere
that creating forms in newer versions of Word is not the same, though that
could have just been from an accessibility standpoint? Anyway, I know it can
at least be done, though I'm sorry that's not much help to you at the

I think that's probably good. As Aaron said, probably no need to have our
pCs clocked up to the maximum all the time. It's supposed to be able to do
that when it needs to/when high demand is put on the processor, I think. I
do *think* I noticed a small performance improvement, but not nearly as much
as when I simply changed my synth over to Vocalizer. The high temps I was
getting could also have been because of all the crud in my fans, though I
swear they were normal before I did the power plan change, and they still
seem, oddly, a bit too high (going up to near sixty sometimes).

Hey everyone.

So, I am running an AMD with six processors rated at, apparently, around
3500 MHZ. My system has 8 GB of Ram and is running Windows 10, 1803, and
JAWS 18. My preferred voice is the premium Daniel Vocalizer voice. Yes,
these specs are all relevant to the topic.

For some time now, I have noticed a certain tendency of my system to lag, or
lock up, for several seconds at a time. This only seems to happen when JAWS
is running. I'm aware that my choice to use this synth does negatively
affect JAWS response time, even on this reasonably fast system. Anyway, the
"freezes" seem to affect some programmes more than others, but perhaps
particularly Firefox and MS Office products. Sometimes, alt-tabbing between
open windows seems rather sluggish.

Well, today I ran a utility from a company called Resplendent Software
called WhySoSlow. It's basically one of dozens of diagnostic software tools
available, that measures your computer's performance by calculating various
factors. It measures your CPU speed, memory load, and the temperature of
your CPUs using the sensors that modern PCs have. The system was running at
a cool 20-something celsius. It was also running at less than half its
advertised clockspeed, the programme informed me, and suggested that my CPUs
were being "throttled" to conserve power.

Now, I'm aware that some of these third party utilities measure specs in
weird ways, or make strange and not always advisable recommendations. I've
completely gone off using registry cleaners or any such tools for this
reason. I'm also aware that modern CPUs can "clock up" when the load on them
becomes particularly intensive, but I don't know how well Windows for
instance actually manages this feature. However, I decided to try a little
experiment. I remembered fiddling a bit with the power settings in Windows
10 previously, but not to any great extent - mostly just to prevent my
computer from "going to sleep" when left unattended. In the "power plan"
settings within power options, I adjusted the power plan from "balanced", to
"optimise for performance", to see if it would make a difference.

I then ran WhySoSlow again. My computer is now operating at peak processor
speed, all of the time. I suppose it's also using a hell of a lot more
power, which might not be a good thing. It's also not "running cool"
anymore. In fact, the CPU temperature has doubled all across the board,
reaching as high as 65 C, according to this programme (even higher according
to the coretemp utility).

However - JAWS is now behaving much more responsively. I haven't had any
freezes. Alt-tab cycles between programmes nearly instantaneously, and
Firefox seems much faster.

I don't really have a question for the list. I just thought this was kind of
an interesting thing to share, and

an interesting thing to share, and wondered if anyone else had observed
anything similar. It is a fact that with my current setup I am normally at a
speed disadvantage when placed against sighted users. This is, I believe, in
part because JAWS is somewhat resource-intensive, especially using this type
of synthesiser (yes, I have considered switching back to Eloquence). I'm not
sure if I ought to keep my setup this way. I don't particularly want a
really high power bill and I don't want my computer to overheat, though in
theory the automatic cutoffs should engage before anything really bad
happens. I actually think it's nice that Windows includes power saving
features, but not necessarily at the expense of system performance.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Good ole' Eloquence

2018-06-26 Thread JM Casey
Hey Fernando.
Interesting thoughts re spanish voice synthesis. I had my issues with english
Vocalizer voices too, but generally not related to intonation and such,
although not being able to raise pitch for capitalisation did annoy me when
trying to proofread stuff. The intonation for different types of sentences was
acceptable. I used the Daniel voice most of the time and it was probably one of
the most pleasant synthesised voices I've ever come across. I also used Kate
from time to time and sometimes when you use an exclamation mark, she can sound
a little bit squeaky! It was cute. :P

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Good ole' Eloquence

I always used and still use Eloquence for dayly screen reading.
Although other engines have more human-sounding voices, most do not change
intonation correctly when there are question or exclamation marks, or change
with random results. At least in Spanish, Eloquence is the only engine which
clearly change intonation in all of these cases if the text is well punctuated.
At least in Spanish, Eloquence only have two problems.
First, whetter you use Castilian or Latin American, the y letter is read the
same as i, which is not right when navigating by character. I solve this by
adding a JAWS dictionary rule, only for Eloquence and Spanish, that makes a
nonintrusive sound each time an y appears. It is important to choose a
nonintrusive sound, because the y in Spanish must be pronnounced the same as
“i” when in a phrase is like the English “and”.
The second and most important problem is that there's not a Spanish Eloquence
dialect that correctly read sillables with sh and, at the same time, distinct
sounds of c, s and z. While the Castilian Spanish differentiates these sounds
like in Spain but does not correctly read the sh sillables, Latin American is
the oposite. While the behabiour of Latin American Spanish matches the way in
which we treat these aspects in most Latin American countries (even when this
language setting is made thinking in Mexico), there should be a language
setting mixing these two advantages like other engines do.

Last, but not least, Eloquence does not become unstable when activating the
Caps During Say All option in JAWS, which allows to read a word in a louder
pitch when it contains capital letters during a Say All. This option can be
turned on also when using other engines like Vocalizer, but even the various
Vocalizer versions specifically aimed for Freedom Scientific products become
sluggish at changing pitch for specific words in long phrases.
What about question and exclamation marks intonation with speech engines in
English?

Hi.

CPUID's HW Monitor is quite screen reader friendly and will often report hdd
temps along with other temps for cpu and such, also may report fan speeds,
and may report power consumption.

No need to get hw monitor pro, just do the free one. You should have a zip
file when you download, just extract that to a folder and run hw monitor
64.exe or the other if you're on 32 bit windows.

leep mode, often used for performing
basic tasks while the screen is shut or perhaps even asleep. Other CPUs
won't go below 533, 800 or 994mhz or there abouts. You can mess with
this value to set a minimum slowed speed you're happy with, for instance
you may find that if you do 70 percent your c cpu bottoms out at 2.4ghz
or some such, and runs fairly cool and is still reasonably responsive.

Maximum processor state is also very useful but it won't help your
problem most likely, unless you want to try forcing it to run at 2.4ghz
and not go over or under that for some reason.

Note also that most of the time the percentage won't be followed
exactly, you'll get what ever the closest clock speed will be if the cpu
steps up or down to match it e.g. if the buss speed is 99mhz it'll jump
by 99mhz increments ignoring the setting change if you apply it smaller
than that. Also, turbo boost (intel) or I forgot what AMD calls it,
where the cpu jumps clock speeds way higher than the rated clock speeds
at times, will probably get turned off the instant you lower maximum
processor state below 100 percent even one percentage point, and thus
the rest of the scale is from what ever your base clock speed is and
below that, perhaps.

Hope that's useful.

Re: [JAWS-Users] interesting thoughts/finding about CPU speeds, temperature and JAWS

2018-06-26 Thread JM Casey
Here's a bunch o' links and some info:

hWMonitor: https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

I gave it a quick spin and it seems reliable. The interface is very basic
and I don't see any options, but it's really nice to be able to get so much
information in realtime and indeed, it is quite screen-reader-friendly.

WhySoSlow from Resplendence Software:
http://www.resplendence.com/downloads

I think this is probably the best little system diagnostic tool I've found
for newbies. Yes, I still count myself among this number, since a lot of the
data provided by programmes like HWMonitor in particular, I am still trying
to make sense of. This particular programme provides a report and links to
quick explanations of all the data it gives. If you don't actually know
anything about CPU temperature thresholds/limits, clock speeds, kernel
responsiveness etc, none of these other programmes will really help you much
without some accompanying google search work.

CoreTemp:
https://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Really small and straight-forward-ish programme that is highly recommended
by a lot of hardware pros from what I can tell. You just install it, run it,
and it will immediately display your CPU temps in the bottom of the window.
You can set alarms to go off if the temperature spikes alarmingly or
whatever.

SpeedFan:
http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

This programme seems fairly old, but it's still very usable. I mean, it came
installed on this computer along with CoreTemp and appears to recognise all
of my hardware. It's rather complex compared to everything else mentioned
here and to be honest I haven't been able to make a load of sense with it.
It's very configurable and unlike the other programmes can actually make
changes to your system/performance. It even claims to be able to give you
the ability to manually adjust your fan speeds without recourse to bios or
anything. However, I haven't gotten it to do this. It does relay all info
from all temperature sensors, and can perform a variety of other system
diagnostics. Not for the faint of heart though I think. Haha

Hey guys.

After some thought, I decided to switch my primary synthesiser back to
Eloquence. I must say, that JAWS is now acting a lot more like the robust
and response screen-reader I would expect on such a relatively fast machine.
I spent the past year listening to a nice, mannered, human-sounding voice,
but wondering why the devil my computer was being just as slow and clunky at
times as my XP machine was. Well, now I have the answer. Duh. These
Vocalizer voices are resource-intensive and slow the machine down. Anybody
else noticed this? I guess it's a foregone conclusion, but I just assumed my
machine would be able to handle it well. I think it'd be ok for reading, but
for all practical purposes, well, the trade in favour of performance is an
obvious no-brainer.

So, what synths does everyone use here, anyway? What are your thoughts on
all the software synths out there nowadays? Curiosity question.

Also, Eloquence - y'know, it's kind of good to have the old man back.

I noticed that business with time, and also some really weird stuff with
abbreviations. I would *think* this would be somewhat configurable but I
haven't looked into it as it hasn't annoyed me that much.

I feel, now that I'm back on Eloquence, it makes sense that people use
Vocalizer for example reading books and things like that, but for more
practical purposes, like work, or just really do anything quickly on the
computer (if it has a mere 8 GB of ram!) Eloquence get the upper hand. I was
explaining to my friend, who built this PC for me, the problems I was having
with Vocalizer in terms of speed and random freezes, and he just could not
understand why this would happen, as he's able to do music production and
real-time audio on a computer with half this amount of power/ram. Ah well...

I can't stand any of them, they don't read punctuation the same as
Eloquence, times are expressed in longer less useful detail, and people who
put images in names don't read part of the time either. Nathan could work
if I could actually control it like Eloquence, maybe but he does not do
graphics in names well. Eloquence may be annoying for long periods but it
works as I am used to it working, punctuation set to some for most
applications, not having to hear a time as 12 hours 58 minutes ...
If I am forced to use Vocalizer for everything, I might actually switch to
NVDA despite it not supporting my 12-year-old Focus 80 braille display I
bought myself. It works great with JAWS but not at all with NVDA a program
I am glad is inexpensive for many but not one I really wish to migrate to on
a regular basis.

I don't know what programme this was. A lot of these types of cleaners *do*
mess with the registry. I'd trust myself to mess with that more than I would
some programme that has no idea about my settings, what I installed and why or

I used to have some luck though with a programme called Revo Uninstaller. This

anyway, if noone has any other suggestions.

You're right that people don't talk that way. It's why the Vocalizer voices
sound really bad if you jack them up to even forty percent. They are indeed
very human sounding. However, my reasoning is that a speech synthesiser is a

I find I always have to turn the subwoofer all the way down except when
playing music. Almost everything is too bassy! This analogue subwoofer
control also doesn't give a lot of control at all. Seems it's either all the

Hey Steve.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I appreciate it. The utility can be found,
if you're curious, at:
http://www.resplendence.com/downloads

The temperature thing is quite strange, because I also thought the spike in
temperature rather drastic. Thing is, my fans were also filthy. Today my
girlfriend and I took the PC (yes, it's a desktop) apart and cleaned the
fans and area around them. Temperatures have now dropped significantly, to
the level I was seeing before, around the low 20s. Much better! I also set
the power plan back to normal, because now that I switched to Eloquence
again, the computer is performing much more smoothly. I did not anticipate a
software synth to put such a load on the machine, but as someone else
pointed out, I don't have a soundcard to run JAWS or anything else on, just
the internal Realtech audio, which is pretty good, but y'know.

I am trying to read up now on power plans and CPU loads. It's quite
interesting.

J.M.,

I hadn't heard of that utility before; and I'm slightly surprised that your
temps went up that much. I suppose how good your cooling is depends on the
type of technology you have; case design, type of cooler and number of fans.

I assume you are using a desktop, I would be more concerned about the higher
temperatures if you are using a laptop, because of their limited cooling
capacity.

As for power consumption, a typical desktop uses about 200 Watts per hour,
but I'd guess the differential amount of power used on the high-performance
versus balanced setting is quite nominal. I don't have a talking watt-hour
meter, so I can't measure that precisely, but I'd guess you would see maybe
a 50-Watt-hour difference.

With the average price of a kilowatt-hour of electricity for residential
customers around 13¢ then, I would expect your power bill would be affected
by about $4 per month.

Re: [JAWS-Users] interesting thoughts/finding about CPU speeds, temperature and JAWS

2018-06-25 Thread JM Casey
Hey Dennis.

I have three programmes on here that do this as part of their function. None
of them are 100% screen-reader friendly but they work well enough. One thing
I like about this WhySoSlow programme is that it can save the information in
an html report that you just read afterwards. It lists all CPU temps but not
HD as far as I know. The guy who built this computer for me is really into
this stuff and he put a programme on here called CoreTemp that is a very
detailed system temperature monitor. It, unlike WhySoSlow, has info on hard
disks. This info is dependent on whether there are internal sensors in the
machine or not; I think most modern computers have them though. The third
programme is called Speedfan and it is supposed to be able to directly
control your system fans through software if they are plugged into the
motherboard and not directly into the power supply. This programme is super
complex and can poll a lot of data, and I can't make much sense of it. Haha.

Anyway, I have only been using it for a day, but I do recommend WhysoSlow as
it produces a straight-forward and relatively easy-to-understand diagnostic
report, and the software includes many helpful links and documentation that
you can access at every stage. The company seems to produce some other
useful utilities too, like a programme called WhoCrashed that is supposed to
analyse the infamous "blue screens of death" and tell you what programme or
driver is likely to be causing them.

With WhysoSlow, you have to use the JAWS cursor to access the features, but
it didn't take me long to get the hang of it.

I haven't had any
freezes. Alt-tab

Firefox seems much faster.

I don't really have a question for the list. I just thought this was kind of
an interesting thing to share, and wondered if anyone else had observed
anything similar.

Hi all,

A long time ago, it was possible to format text in Facebook notes by using HTML
tags like , , etc.

Then, in 2014 or so, they introduced a WYSIWYG editor which no longer supported
HTML tags. Instead, we had to select text, disable JAWS Forms Mode and, below
the editor and the Post button, there was a list of links with different
options like Bold, Italic etc. which applied these attributes to the selected
text.

Now I'm trying to format text on a note, but JAWS is not detecting the links
with the different formattings. I know these links are present, because when I
select text it appears, below the Post button, a button saying Close the Popup
and Return, which is not present when no text is selected.

I've tried both with Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer, both with JAWS and
NVDA, with the same results in all cases.

Does someone know how to format text on a Facebook note right now by using only
the keyboard?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, that nVDA feature is, I think, a part of Windows 10 App Essentials. I
haven't played with it. I do use them on my phone (android, not iphone), but
always feel it's kind of a silly thing to do. Still, especially when talking

It is a little odd that JAWS can recognise them but there's no current way to

I was reading on another JAWS List and someone had used an emoji, if that's the
right word. JAWS described it when I was reading with the down-arrow key but
not the left and right arrows, so it would seem that there was no colon and
closed parenthesis to make a smiling face. Windows 10 can, they say, bring up
a list of emoji with Windows key and either the period or the semicolon. But
if it does, JAWS can't see them, and neither can I! LOL. I tried recognizing
the screen, but got no descriptions. I googled and found that there is an
add-on for NVDA that will make these emoji accessible. Not having NVDA
installed, I can't check. It would be fun if JAWS had this since we all send
stuff to sighted friends.

Presumably, everyone can already do this on their iPhones, but alas, no iPhone
yet. So, again, it would be great if JAWS would let me play! LOL.

Just sayin'

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji

Hi,
I'll try my best to address several questions about emoji panel in one go:

Q. What is emoji?
Emoji (a shorthand Japanese for "emotion characters", from Romanization of
"emo" and "ji" (character)) is a picture that represents objects, emotions,
people, events and so on. This came about in the late 1990's where people
wanted to conserve space on data usage yet wanted to express their emotions
to the fullest. This became pop0ular among Japanese mobile phone users via
SMS (short messaging service) before it gain widespread usage in 2010's.

Q. How do I read emoji?
It'll depend on screen reader and synthesizer in use. Some synthesizers do
support announcing emojis, while others don't. Also, the ability to
recognize emojis will depend on how the screen reader processes Unicode data
and instructions sent to speech synthesizers regarding how to process such
characters.

Q. How do I input emoji?
In Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) and later, you can browse
and insert emoji by pressing Windows+period or Windows+semicolon. Note that
in 1709 and 1803 (April 2018 Update), only United States English keyboard
layout will let you browse emojis. In Redstone 5 (under development), this
restriction is gone.
In 1709 and 1803, once emoji panel opens, press the arrow keys to move
through emojis. Press Tab to cycle through emoji categories, or if you're
looking for a specific emoji, type the name and the panel will return
suggestions. To insert a given emoji, press Enter.
In Redstone 5, you can still use arrow keys to move through emojis. However,
pressing Tab will not cycle through categories; rather, it'll switch between
emojis and categories. To select a different emoji category, press Tab to go
the categories, then use left or right arrows to move through categories and
press Enter. In case of People category, you can choose a skin tone. Once
the emoji is found, press Enter.

Q. Does JAWS support emoji panel?
Not at this time (according to tests). Some users asked VFO regarding this
matter not long ago.

Q. Does other screen readers support emoji panel?
Write to me privately regarding this matter please (not only to keep the
topic on scope, but also because I am the one who brought support for emoji
panel for a certain screen reader; hint: there will come a day when a
certain scripts will not be required to interact with emoji panel, but
that's for another time).

Cheers,
Joseph

Re: [JAWS-Users] accessible program needed that will automatically clean cookies from browsers when exiting

Hey.
Now I'm not sure if cCleaner claims to be "extra thorough" or some damn
thing, however I don't think you need a third party programme to do this. I
believe most browsers can be configured to do this themselves. So, what
browser are you using?

Hi, it seems CCleaner is not accessible anymore. I need a program that is
accessible with Jaws that will automatically delete cookies and form data
from browsers when the browser is closed. Please. Thank you for your help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji

2018-06-21 Thread JM Casey
Hey.

Yes, that nVDA feature is, I think, a part of Windows 10 App Essentials. I
haven't played with it. I do use them on my phone (android, not iphone), but
always feel it's kind of a silly thing to do. Still, especially when talking
with my landlady, sometimes a simple emoji is best, as she just wants to go
on and on and on, and I have to indicate I'm listening, somehow. Lol

It is a little odd that JAWS can recognise them but there's no current way
to select one to input in your messages and such.

I was reading on another JAWS List and someone had used an emoji, if that's
the right word. JAWS described it when I was reading with the down-arrow
key but not the left and right arrows, so it would seem that there was no
colon and closed parenthesis to make a smiling face. Windows 10 can, they
say, bring up a list of emoji with Windows key and either the period or the
semicolon. But if it does, JAWS can't see them, and neither can I! LOL. I
tried recognizing the screen, but got no descriptions. I googled and found
that there is an add-on for NVDA that will make these emoji accessible. Not
having NVDA installed, I can't check. It would be fun if JAWS had this
since we all send stuff to sighted friends.

Presumably, everyone can already do this on their iPhones, but alas, no
iPhone yet. So, again, it would be great if JAWS would let me play! LOL.

Just sayin'

Re: [JAWS-Users] formatting Facebook notes

2018-06-21 Thread JM Casey
Hi Fernando.

I do not know, but I swear I was talking about this on a facebook post sometime
late last year, and a friend replied and told me how it could be done. This was
not a screen-reader user, but from the way he made it sound, it was something
that could be easily accomplishable through the keyboard. I can't remember for
the life of me what was said in that discussion as I never really pursued it.
I'll have to look back and see if I can find it, or maybe just ask him.

I always thought it was really unfortunate that you couldn't use html tags on
facebook. Even forums (though in a modified form) and many other sites I
conribute to (goodreads) allow this.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem with OCR on a TIF file with multiple pages

2018-06-21 Thread JM Casey
Do you think the budget could stretch to accommodate an OCR package for you?
I don't think it'd have to be anything too fancy or expensive. Abbyy
Finereader would probably do the trick. Then you could import all the .tifs
into the programme and oCR them as if you had scanned them yourself.

I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions for JAWS OCR; my experiences with it
have not exactly been of a satisfactory enough level to recommend it for
professional use. Let's see if anyone suggests anything else.

normally isn't a problem, however, the faxes are multiple pages. JAWS only
recognizes the first page and stops. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can

Re: [JAWS-Users] Best program for reading PDFs

2018-06-20 Thread JM Casey
Hi.

I use a little programme called qRead for non-image pdfs most of the time.
It loads a lot quicker than Adobe and doesn't crash, so I appreciate it. The
programme costs about $30 US as I recall and I don't regret the investment.
For image PDFs, I use Adobe Acrobat Pro, which can OCR the documents and
generally gets better results than JAWS does. . Note that this isn't the
same as Adobe Reader and while it actually came with this pC and thus I
didn't pay for it myself, I don't think it's cheap to purchase.

An OCR package can do the things you want. Examples of those are Abbyy
FineReader, on the mainstream (and much cheaper) end of things, or Open
Book, and I guess, KNFB Reader. If you don't have or want any of those, you
should definitely try the jAWS OCR feature as well, which most people have
suggested to you. I have not really ever met with great results from this,
but hey, at least it works and is a nice feature. It was also improved
greatly in JAWS 2018, however I only have the demo of that, and the one time
I tried to OCR a picture of a lot of text the results I got were completely
unusable still. That wasn't a PDF though, and the printing was weird, so you
may meet with better results.

Hi all, I have been sent a document I really need to read as soon as
possible but it is a PDF and it appears I don't have a program on my laptop
to read these. When I tried to open it straight from the email it opened in
edge and I couldn't read anything. After I saved it to a folder in my
documents and went to open it I got a list of programs I could use to open
it but all I tried couldn't display the document. I tried opening it in
notepad and got a lot of rubbish instead of what it was meant to be. So now
I am wondering what the best program to use with Jaws 2018 and windows 10 is
and where can I get it from?

I've been having trouble making the person on the other end understand what
format I need because the first time she sent it to me it was a picture
which of course Jaws couldn't read so I asked her to send it again in a word
file. She then sent me a screen shot of the document so again I had to
explain that jaws doesn't read pictures and asked again for a word version.
She is working on an iPad so she didn't have access to word so she finally
sent me the PDF version. I'm afraid that this too will be a picture rather
than an actual PDF but to find this out I need a program that will open it.

Thanks for any help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] I E 11

2018-06-19 Thread JM Casey
I think Steve was just making a recommendation. It'll probably work equally
well both ways, but if you're resetting something, it's best not to have
that thing actually running while you're doing it, because some things can't
be rest while they are operational. You know how when you install most
programs a screen comes up telling you to close applications? That's why.
There are dependencies and such that lots of programs have, and you won't be
able to remove or change something on the system while it's in use. Rather
than give you an error message about it, the program in question might just
leave a bunch of junk cluttering up your system. So, it's just a sensible
practice.

Having said that, I do want to point out that Steve's search box method to
get to the control panel still works best in Windows 10. The windows key--x
menu, which I have forgotten the name of at the moment, at least on my
Windows 10 machine, has a link to the settings app, but not control panel,
though I guess it's possible to add this to the menu yourself if you want
to. Despite Microsoft making promises about better integration, settings and
control panel are still not integrated. I personally dislike the settings
app so am happy control panel is still around. Still though...

Yes. I did the export process, but it crashed the programme (outlook 2010
also). However, the .pst file is there, and it's very large. So I'm sort of
assuming it worked and the crash occurred after it was finished. I have yet
to try it a second time because I have been unsuccessful in removing Office
2010 from my computer, so don't yet have 2016 installed. These MS programmes

good afternoon folks, I'm back with another question, or perhaps a
verification,

one of my client's wants to export from outlook 2010, and import to outlook
2016.

I did a quick google search and found the following.

has anyone tried this?

Look at the process below to migrate Outlook 2010 PST data to Outlook 2016.

Stage1: Backup/Export Outlook 2010 PST data to an Outlook .pst file

To export mailbox data to an Outlook .pst file, follow the steps given
below:

list of 7 items

1. Launch your MS Outlook 2010 application.

2. On the topmost ribbon of MS Outlook, go to the File Tab. Click
Options>Advanced>Export.

3. From Import and Export wizard, select Export to a file. Click Next.

4. In the next Export to a file wizard, select Outlook Data File (.pst) and
click Next.

5. Select the email account name you need to export. To export the entire
PST data, select the checkbox Include Subfolders. Click Next.

You can export a single folder also by selecting that particular folder. In
this case, you have to clear the Include subfolders check box. Click Next.

Note: You cannot select more than one folder to export. To export another
folder, you have to perform the whole process again, i.e., a single folder
or

whole mailbox can be exported at a time.

Here, only Inbox folder is selected to export to a .pst file or to have a
backup of inbox items.

One more option is available to apply Filter to select particular items from
the folder. With advanced filters, you can select important emails from your

folder.

6. In Export Outlook Data File wizard, Browse and select the required
location to export your file. You can select the required option. Click
Finish to

continue.

7. After this, a dialogue box is popped up asking for the password (if you
have set a password for PST file or when you are creating a new .pst file).

Insert password and click OK. Your file will get saved to the selected
location. Select checkbox. Your password is saved for future use.

list end

Stage2: Import and Add PST file data to Outlook 2016

Import Outlook 2010 .pst file into Outlook 2016 using the given steps:

list of 6 items

1. Launch MS Outlook 2016 application.

2. Go to the File Tab. Click Open & Export>Import/Export.

3. From Import and Export wizard, select Import from another program or
file.

4. Select file type as Outlook data file (.pst). Click Next.

5. Click Browse to provide the location of the .pst file to be imported.
Click on the required option and click Next.

6. Select the particular folder or select include all subfolders. You can
apply Filter if selecting a single folder. Click Finish to complete the
process.

list end

The impossible is the untried, Never under estimate the power of a
dream.

Does this happen only on certain websites?

As someone suggested, you could try an earlier version of JAWS, or nVDA
latest version even, and see what happens. But some already consider IE to
be a "deprecated" browser. In my experience though, it doesn't crash so much
as things just don't work right/links or certain parts of the page appear
invisible using IE. So it might be something else particular to your system.
Maybe if you give a site url that is giving you trouble, others on the list
could try for themselves.

Np. Hope you like it. So far the biggest accessibility hurdle I have found
is, oddly enough, the help system, which doesn't seem to be quite Windows

intuitively make sense to you. One thing a lot of JAWS users may like is
that it doesn't use ribbons, but classic menu bars.

I know that someone remotely installed the trash software, but this is a
perfect time to teach how to create a restore point. I create a new one even
when I am installing trusted software, but certainly if it is a program that

Good luck and the computer's owner should report this to the better business

Re: [JAWS-Users] same as ms office

2018-06-09 Thread JM Casey
Yes. OpenOffice works pretty well; in some cases it's even a bit faster and
more intuitive than the MS product, I think. Only thing is: it does not
contain an e-mail client, so you will have to find one if you want to fill
the Outlook gap. Try Thunderbird.

Re: [JAWS-Users] calling from windows trashed computer

2018-06-09 Thread JM Casey
Hey.

I'm familiar with this scam. Unless it's a different variant, what they
actually installed was Team Viewer. This is a legitimate programme made by
Microsoft which is often used in IT or support environments. However, it
allows a person to have remote access and control the host computer. So
theoretically, they could have done a lot of things once Team Viewer was up
and running. I would definitely boot into safe mode, and examine startup
items using msconfig or some similar programme to see if Team Viewer or any
other unwanted programmes are activating automatically at startup. As for
trashed files, let's hope your friend has a backup. The fake technician
could have just deleted stuff out of spite if the person refused to give his
credit card information; they have been known to do this. There's a video on
youtube of a guy fooling them by using a virtual machine. It's pretty funny,
so long as you yourself werent' scammed, but it illustrates how these people
usually operate.

It's hard to believe that people are really taken in by this, but I guess
your friend is a sobering example of how this can happen.

Hey.

I don't, but you could consider contacting your bank or credit provider.
This is actually often a service they offer. And you should never have to
pay for it. If you're paying, you're being ripped off.

Well, now it's my turn to clarify. I do not precisely mean the start menu
search, but the one in file explorer. You will see it if you shift-tab back
from the folder tree. It works similar to the start menu search in that
results are populated without the need to press enter, but it will ineed
still show details if you have that radio button checked, since the list
view that's populated is exactly the same one as you normally see in file
explorer, just using your search criteria to narrow down what is shown.

you explain exactly what it is you want to do, it will be more clear what
steps you should take.

Hi.

Perhaps I'm not understanding something in this request, but you mentioned
DoS, so why don't you just use command line to do this? del *.dat, del
j?.txt, etc, etc, still works just as well as it did in 1992. :)

I am using the latest jaws 2018 and windows 7. Is there a file manager
program that acts like DOS to delete several files at once using wildcards
to delete a group of files with the same extension that's Jaws friendly?

Aha, cool idea! I kind of stopped bothering with a hotkey a while ago, but I
never thought of this at all, so maybe I'll reinstate it.

Hi Geoff & Cristóbal,

You can try assigning the shortcut keystroke from a different Jaws icon, and
I believe it will solve your disappearing keystroke problem. I assign my
pin to Taskbar shortcut from this Jaws icon and never have to mess with it
after a Jaws build update. Try the following:
1. Open the Start menu, navigate to the Programs folder and open it.
2. Use first letter navigation to the version of Jaws you want to assign the
shortcut keystroke to. Press the letter, J, until you reach JAWS2018, for
example.
3. With the preferred version of JAWS highlighted Press enter or right arrow
to open, up or down arrow to, JAWS, and this is the icon that you want to
use for creating the shortcut keystroke.
4. So, with the JAWS icon highlighted press, Alt + Enter, to open the JAWS
properties, or press the applications key or Shift + F10 to open the context
menu, and press enter on properties.
5. Assign your keystroke, tab to, Apply, press the spacebar, tab to, Okay,
and press Enter.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Not that I know of, but honestly, it's not like it's that bit a deal. I just
go through the install and reboot and go into Jaws properties tab down,
re-do the hotkey and presto. It takes like what? 10 seconds if that.

Hello.

I have a question about Jaws and setting up a hot key. Is there a way I can
set up a Jaws hot key and not lose it every time Jaws updates to a new
version? NVDA for example never loses its hotkey. Jaws should be the same.

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Hot Key

2018-05-28 Thread JM Casey
I don't think so, no. Between full version numbers this makes sense, as they
are supposed to be able to exist simultaneously on the system and thus the
versions have different path/filenames, etc. But I also don't really see why
a hotkey shouldn't be retained after a cumulative update to a version.

I think the NVDA hotkey works quite differently; it seems to be part of
NVDA's instalation whereas with JAWS it's entirely up to you whether you
want one or not. It's a Windows thing.

Ok. I went to the downloads page, and the meetings client, then to the
manual download button. The other downloads for PC are plug-ins for various
programmes like outlook and IBM Notes, etc.

it. If you try your link you will see what I was confused about.

What choices are you referring to? I installed it sometime last year so the
memory is a bit foggy, but I recall it being pretty straightforward. Lot
easier to deal with than Skype, in fact.

You can do this with zoom. The only issue I really have is that the chat box
won't automatically speak text input by the other person. But you can also
chat via audio. There are keyboard commands for everything. Go to
http://www.zoom.us and download the client.

Hello all- I need to have a business call and the other party wants to see
what is on my screen. She is asking me to set up a video chat. I have never
attempted this before so can somebody tell me if it is possible? I am using
Windows 7 64bit and JAWS 15. I have JAWS 17 on another machine if that would
make a difference.

Thanks,
