[JAWS-Users] Update On Outlook 2016 E-mail Attachment Issue

2018-06-07 Thread Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.

I just installed the latest build of Jaws 2018-version 1805.33, and I am now
able to attach documents to an e-mail at least some of the time.

What I mean is that the process works, but not consistently.

I have tried the various suggestions I have been given for attaching files,
and they all seem to work at least most of the time.

However, there still are some times when Outlook e-mail completely crashes,
irrespective of the attachment method I use.

My next steps will likely be to see what happens with either NVDA or
Narrator to help determine if this is a Jaws issue.

Will keep everyone posted.

Once again, I'm using Outlook 2016 with Office 365 here, along with Jaws
2018 on this windows 7 computer.

Aaron,

Thanks for posting your detailed rant. I, too, am enormously frustrated that
browsing has become so time--consuming and sometimes unreliable. I'm
constantly switching among three browsers and two versions of JAWS because
different combinations work best with different websites, and even then some
websites remain hard, if not impossible, to navigate. The other day, a
certain website owner had taken steps to make everything accessible, only
for me to install Firefox 60 and generate a host of new issues. No wonder
some website designers get frustrated with accessibility obligations.

Developments on the Web seem to be moving faster than screenreader companies
can keep up with. But I wonder why non-screenreader users aren't also
encountering limitations with different browsers, since each seems to
function differently.

Hi.

I switched to Firefox 60, found it still a bit lacking in performance, and
switched back to Chrome. A site that makes it painfully clear which one is
winning is amazon.com. Just doing a search for something and noticing how
long pages need to appear and be readable, and how responsive navigation
keys arrows and quick nav etc are. Firefox is almost back to what it was in
52, but not totally. I was under the impression it would run better than
chrome but that hasn't been so for me.

Edge is reasonably quick loading pages and allowing me to begin arrowing on
them, but the way it announces going in and out of regions and such is very
verbose and I find it slows me down too much. I'm really a little annoyed at
just how much it seems to be asking to have a really good browsing
experience this day and age. Chrome doesn't have it all either, it can
easily get messed up and start using all of your ram. I'm not having that
problem myself luckily, but I have multiple friends that are, each of them
on multiple computers too.

In any case, I'm not trying to convert you folks to Chrome or anything like
that, guess I wanted to rant a little.

Access Toolbar by opening a new message, finding in the Message tab the High
Importance button, pressing APPLICATIONS or SHIFT+F10 and choosing Add to Quick
Access Toolbar item. If you haven't added nor removed anything from the Quick
Access Toolbar for the message editing window the High Importance button should
be the fourth item, so it would be assigned to ALT+4.
Since ALT+NUMBER keystrokes are assigned in JAWS for reading Outlook message
headers, you will have to press JAWS+3 before using the abobe mentioned
keystroke.

Hope it helps!

Does anyone know of a key stroke for designating an e-mail as "high importance"

I can get to the high importance designation via the menus, but would like a
specific key stroke for doing this if that is available.

Am using the latest build of Jaws 2018 on a windows 7 laptop here.

Thanks as always!

when you say windows live mail,

the one which is never to be updated?
or are you talking about the windows mail app, with windows 10.
if it's the windows live mail,
the autofill will never work, because there's no jaws scripting, so, even
the NVDA doesn't autofill.
if your talking about the windows 10 mail app, again there's no jaws
scripting, however with the NVDA, there's a windows essentials add-on which
works well.

The way you describe how autocomplete is working for you in Outlook 2016 is
also my experience. I often need to press enter on the selection, tab away
from the "To" field, then shift-tab back to the "To" line to confirm the
correct address has been accepted. There are alternative methods, but no
need to go into them. Yes, this is different from my experience with Outlook

Well, the level 2 guy emptied auto complete because it wasn't working
properly. It was providing addresses that had nothing to do with the first
few letters. He told me that in order to rebuild it, I should write in the
first few letters and then press control K which would bring up a list of
relevant addresses. I should arrow down to the correct address and press
enter. That address would then be filled in and would be part of my
reconstruction of auto complete. So I was trying to send an email to the
blind democracy list. I found the correct address. However, even though I
followed his directions, auto complete filled in a different address which
belonged to someone who used "blind" and his first name and whose address
was in the list. Finally, I went to a word document where I'd stored the
blind democracy address and copied and pasted it into the to field. The next
time I tried to use auto complete for the blind democracy list, the correct
address was filled in, but Jaws didn't read it until I pressed enter. The
Jaws users name was filled in but again, Jaws didn't read it the way it
normally does. I think I had to press enter or manually read the line. So it
seems to me that Jaws isn't working properly with auto complete or auto
complete isn't working properly or something.

Hi.

If you are having problems with auto-complete for entering recipient in the
"to" field in Outlook, here's something that might work. At least, it works
in Outlook 2010, and I believe I once tested this on 2016 at work, too.
Enter in the first few letters of the recipient. For example, for this list,
I might type in "jaws". Write your message and use your send command. If
there's more than one address that matches the criteria of what you entered,
a list of matches will pop up before you send the message, and you can
select the one that applies.

Not sure if this will really help you, but I notice that people often seem
to have issues with JAWS and auto-complete, in that they don't know when an
address has been filled out.

The first time, I had to copy the blind democracy address from a document

that if I moved from the to Miriam folder to the inbox while jaws is

I'm sure the problem isn't solved. That article that I sent to the blind

Miriam,

It sounds as though someone created a "message rule" for your email so that
it goes to that defective folder. You can delete that rule. Try the
following:

Place focus in a message list next to a message where your name is in the
"To" line.

Press the applications key, which is between the right-hand Windows and
control keys.

Arrow down to "Rules submenu." Press enter.

Tab until you hear "Manage rules and alerts..." Press the spacebar here.

Tab again until you hear "Delete." Once again, press the spacebar.

I just went through these steps to make sure they work. However, since I
don't want to remove any of my existing rules, I couldn't go further. I
suggest you keep tabbing from there in case there's an "Apply" button. If
there is, press the spacebar on it. either way, resume tabbing to the Okay
button.

I hope you can follow these steps and that they solve this part of your
email problem.

Imo it's always good to have alternatives. Some people don't want an apple
device, and others don't want to be bothered with Skype. International phone
plans are not cheap and have to justify their cost in extensive use to be
worthwhile. Different VOIP alternatives are a very good thing, and hopefully
not going anywhere.

That said, Whatsapp is a facebook product. It's come under scrutiny recently
because of the privacy scandal that's been in the news the last couple of
weeks, along with instagram. Facebook and apps connected directly with facebook
seem most suspect, though, of divulging peoples' personal information without

Hi. We've had an earlier thread on this subject. I've also written and

Re: [JAWS-Users] BrailleSense U2 QWERTY

2018-04-02 Thread Tom Fairhurst
I see what you mean about the HIMS braille driver. In some cases, you must
select a file to continue the installation. I have done so, but JAWS still
doesn't activate the display. I have put it into Terminal mode using a USB
port with Windows 7 64-bit Pro and JAWS 2018. I call HIMS, and they didn't
know anything else to do. My E-mail address is tfairhu...@kc.rr.com. After I
send this message, I'll reboot and see if anything changes. For those on the
list wanting to get rid of the load braille driver message, the checkbox is
located in JAWS basic braille settings when one adds a braille display or
modify its settings.

Hi tom

I've done a number of these and, if you let the hims driver install where it
wants to, Jaws should find it.

When installing the hims driver, there are two or three separate pieces of
software within the driver package. Each one has a Finish Button and it's a
bit confusing because when you press Finish the process starts again. It's
very easy to assume you've made a booboo and people often press Cancel or
close the installer too soon. just let the thing go round a few times till
it goes away.
The other thing to remember is to not connect the U2 till the Hims driver is
finished installing.

Shout if you need further assistance.

When it first happened to me I ask for suggestions but none of them worked.

Hi folks! This issue is an oldy but a goody, and one that hasn't been fixed
for me yet.

I have two windows 10 computers, and many times JAWS will not say anything
at the log-on screen indicating that I can type the password. Sometimes I
can press Control plus Alt plus Delete, and here the prompt to type my
password. Sometimes, I have to load narrator to find where to put in the
password. The behavior is inconsistent at best.

I wanted to post this to the list, and see if there is anything I can do to
make JAWS work better in this situation. Is there a setting that I need to
check, either in Windows or in JAWS? Any help would be appreciated.

Tom, here's where the Windows edit field makes life easy. For Disc Cleanup,
start typing "disc" into the field, pause, and then arrow down once. The
disc cleanup option comes up and you just press enter. To get into the disc
cleanup window, press alt-tab once. I suggest having all other programs
closed. It can take a minute or so. Once done, JAWS will start talking, and
you'll be presented with a vertical checklist of items to include in the
cleanup. Make your selections, then tab to Okay, then again to confirm.

I haven't done a defrag in a while, but I just checked that it comes up
right away in the Windows search field. Press enter and follow your
instincts.

I should have been clearer about a few points in my earlier update.

I did try Narrator and NVDA, and experienced the same sluggishness and speaker

Fortunately, I've been working on things now for about a half hour, and

Not sure why checking the control sound configurations and re-doing the docking

I suspect it’s a hardware problem also because You mentioned something about
static in your speakers. If you have an earlier version of jaws see if you
still get the static noise and if you have the same problem with lag time when
typing and Also you might want to try to unload your current version of Jaws
and bring up near raider type something in notes or some other editing program
and see if you get that lag time that you talked about that you were getting in
jaws v2018. Every country has an identity, history, custom, and culture. It’s a

Well, you might be right.

I had some sighted assistance a little while ago. We went into the control
panel and checked on a few of the sound card settings. After that, things
improved slightly.

Then, I took the computer out of the docking station I use, and put it back
in.

Now the computer seems to be functioning much more normally.

Don't know what might have happened. All I know is that the problems I had
earlier occurred after the latest Jaws update.

Whether or not the update is truly related to what I experienced is still
unclear to me.

Perhaps the update temporarily messed with some sound card or other
configurations.

 Hello, everyone.

I have developed a serious problem since doing the latest 2018 Jaws update
on this Windows 7 laptop.

In fact, it actually is very difficult to type this e-mail.

Since the update, my computer has basically slowed down to a crawl.

It's hard to type anything, because there is a several-second delay between
hitting a key, and getting a response from Jaws.I also have a great deal of
Static in my computer speakers, which I never had before. Finally, I find
that I often have to restore focus with Jaws when doing a particular task.

I even went back to an earlier version of Jaws, and the problems persisted.

I called Freedom Scientific Tech support, and we re-installed the latest
Jaws update. The problem still persisted. I even did a Jaws repair with no
luck.

Needless to say, I'm not very happy!!

Has anyone had these problems with the latest update, and if so, what did
you do to address them?

This computer is a Dell business-grade computer, and I've never experienced
problems like this before from the many Jaws updates I have done over the
years.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to call Freedom Scientific again in the morning if I have no luck
between now and then.

So far my up and down arrow keys work as the volume control just fine

Hi David and all,
Couldn't find any useful documentation for VLC hotkeys CLI configuration.
That got me on the old lazy boy track to fetch the VLC's config file it
self.
Found it, and it was a fat one, opened it with notepad++, because the
regular notepad would be a wrong choice.
The file Directory:"C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Roaming\vlc\vlcrc
"vlcrc" is our file to play with.
Long story short, the hotkeys configuration lines start with the line
number 4000 on that file
the volume hotkey configuration started with line number 4206
I've changed my volume hotkeys into ctrl+shift+UP and Down.
Worked like a big scotch shot.
Now I can say VLC is indeed worth the effort.
Enjoy tweaking it.

[JAWS-Users] Serious Problem Since Doing Latest Jaws 2018 Update

2018-03-21 Thread Tom Behler

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

I don't know what VLC has to do with unzipping files/books. Shouldn't affect
anything like that.

As for Cyberlink, if you don't use it, just get rid of it. I also remember it
being far from keyboard-friendly, at the very least. No point in keeping around

As Jaws users we shouldn't "have to put up with it". I also experience this
freezing, both when switching between programs and when doing things in
Outlook. If the fact that Jaws uses a lot of Ram, particularly when

We should not have to put up with issues that affect our productivity,

Hello Mike,
John Justice, here.
I work for the state and use configurations which are similar to the ones
you describe.

In the interest of correcting the problem, I brought it to the attention of
our upper level Access group. Their explanation doesn't solve any issues
but it might give you food for thought.

1. THE ISSUE AT HAND: apparently, what we are experiencing is the
assignment of RAM. Current versions of Jaws tend to utilize a considerable
amount of RAM, especially when changing from one software environment to
another. The result is that the system has to {wait} for enough RAM to
perform the function.
2. PROGRAM PRIORITY ASSIGNMENT: It is possible to assign certain programs
on a PC so that they have a priority when RAM is distributed. This is way
beyond my pay grade Mike but apparently, within reason, certain programs can
be allowed to operate at the expense of others, at least temporarily. There
are exceptions to this rule and certain pieces of software are assigned a
permanent top priority. I imagine that the Windows operating system might
have that kind of assignment.
3. According to our A. T. department, reassignment involves the division of
RAM into smaller compartments which then handle this function. The entire
process scares the heck out of me. It isn't something I'd want to attempt.
There might be someone on our list with more technological knowledge than I
have.
4. A WORKING SOLUTION: I am now operating two computers simultaneously.
One is dedicated to some of the functions I need while the second unit
handles primary functions. For example, I use the secondary unit to load
and display Excel spreadsheets. But even with that arrangement, certain
pieces of software will temporarily shut down Jaws until they are fully
loaded. The down time has been measured and it is usually approximately32
seconds.
5. CREATING HOTKEYS FOR RELOADING JAWS: Finally, we have established
hotkeys which can be used to encourage Jaws to restart. Occasionally,
though rarely, Jaws wil not restart after one of these incidents. We use
three key combinations which are dedicated to reactivating Jaws.

The entire thing is frustrating to say the least, Mike. But it's something
we just put up with since jaws performs so well in most other respects.

Matt:

We typically use the shortcut command Alt Control J.

If you can find Jaws listed as a program on your desktop or in your start
menu, then hit the applications key, and use your arrow keys until you find
properties. Hit enter on properties, and hopefully, you'll be at the
shortcut page. By tabbing through the list of options, you'll find a place
to enter that shortcut key. You may have to hit apply and ultimately ok,
but once the shortcut is saved, you then should be able to start Jaws with
that shortcut command if needed.

You can also set Jaws to start automatically when your computer boots, but
that may be going beyond what you are asking here.

Anyway, my question is: Is there a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS if

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.--Matthew Chao

Hello all!
I installed the new JAWS 2018 update on both of my laptops, and many issues
in windows 10 are fixed.

The mail app is almost working perfectly.
I get no repeats of words, and the new message I bring up reads right away.
JAWS works great now, in the One note app. Also, in Edge, JAWS can now list
the form fields, headings, and links. That helps a lot with Edge. You still
cannot select text with the virtual PC cursor in Edge.
JAWS 2018, with this update, works very well in the Windows Defender
security center window. It is very snappy and it reads the information
concerning the scan. I have noticed that action center works much better
with JAWS as well, with this update.

Hello Inamuddin, I was hopeful that the latest 2018 update would solve the
Windows Mail troubles as well but was disappointed in the results as noted
by you and others.
With little to lose, I did a repair on this new version earlier today. The
repair took about 4 times longer than the initial successful install but
since doing this, the Windows 10 Mail program is almost working properly.
On occasion I have to unload and reload both JAWS and Windows Mail and, for
some reason, that seems to restore proper behavior on this Dell Desktop of
recent manufacture.
I would be interested if others with Windows 10 Mail issues find a repair of
the latest update results in improvement. Thanks, Mitch

Hi jerry.

I saw your question and even did a quick google search, and couldn't find
anything. I don't think anyone heere knows. Didn't you say you already wrote
them an e-mail? If you're not receiving any response, it could be that the
developers do not really give support for this product, either because it's old
or because it's not considered a priority. If you're really stuck, and the
internet can't provide you with any answers on how to make this program work
for you, it might just be best to move on to a different piece of software.

Windows Defender for anti-virus. Free version of MalwareBytes for
anti-malware.

Defender is already built into your Windows 10 and probably good enough for
your purposes. It's less annoying than free AV out nowadays, which is always
full of ads and hardly ever great from an accessibility standpoint. And it
does detect a lot of stuff. Arguably, too much. But you can exclude areas of
your drive if you are getting false positives.

I found this to be quite interesting and helpful. The Amazon web site
detects if you are using jaws, probably other screen readers as well. Anyway
when it detects jaws a screen overlay is also displayed giving phone number
contact information for people with disabilities.
The other day I needed to call and asked Karen to bring up the page on her I
pad. She told me that there is no such number. I came upstairs and there it
was. She since did a search and learned that it detects screen readers.
What great customer service.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] How to make Winamp the default player

Hi, all. On my Dell Xps-1501 laptop running Windows 7 64 bit, Windows Media
player tries to launch when I try to play a file someone sent me. The file
plays for a couple of seconds and stops. I tried to change the setting in
default programs and got nowhere. I went into the Winamp preferences menu
and got nowhere using that menu either. Could somebody refresh my memory so
I can make Winamp the default player on my laptop? Incidentally, on my
desktop computer running the latest version of Windows 10 and Winamp, the
files from within the main folder play just fine. Thanks.

Steve, I realize my question sounded silly, but the Pearl is characterized
as "portable." I suppose portable means you can shift it around your desk,
but that's a more limited definition than I have in my head, which is
something like "carryable," as in take it on trips out. But thanks for

Um, you can't take a photo with the Perl camera if you're away from your Pc.
The Perl connects via a USB cable that is about 36 inches long.

Also, how does the Pearl/JFW compare to the KNFB Reader or any other

[JAWS-Users] Continuing Problem With navigating list of contacts in an e-mail group

2017-12-14 Thread Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.

I am continuing to have problems navigating the list of contacts within
several e-mail groups I have created.

This problem has emerged within the past few months, and I keep hoping that
the issue will be fixed with a new Jaws update.

Basically, as I try to navigate the list of contacts in an e-mail group, I
get stuck on the first entry, and cannot arrow down through the rest of the
list in the usual way.

If anyone has found a work-around for this issue, please let me know.

I'm using the latest build of Jaws 2018, Windows 7, and Outlook 2016 with
Office 365 here.

[JAWS-Users] One Drive Instructions And Tutorial Link Needed

2017-12-07 Thread Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.

I recently experienced an external hard drive failure, and, although I have
been able to salvage most of my files from the internal hard drive on my
computer, I am missing a file I put together of instalation and setup
instructions for One Drive.

The file contained some instructions I compiled from various list members,
as well as a link to a very helpful tutorial.

If someone can send me some basic one drive instructions, plus the
recently-posted link to the One Drive tutorial, that would be appreciated.

If it helps, I'm using Jaws 2018, Windows 7, and Office 365 here.

Since I now have office 365 home, with a terabyte of one drive storage, I
think it would be wise to take advantage of this cloud storage option.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The only suggestion I have at this point is to hit enter on the item you get

For me, it says something like Outlook 1, and if I hit enter on it, I'm put

Why this is all so necessary is beyond me.

If you can't get things to work, I'd call Freedom Scientific Tech Support.

I'm saying this for two reasons:

1. They really should help you with your issue, as they helped me; and

2. The more people alert them to this issue, the higher it will become on

Hello, everyone.

I wanted to let you know that my Outlook 2016 address entry issue which was
causing Outlook to crash has been resolved, at least for now.

I worked with Corrie from FS Support, and they are aware of the issue.

The temporary work-around is to run Outlook in safe mode.

Here are the steps for doing this:

1. If you are in Outlook, close the program.

2. Then, press windows R to go to the run dialog prompt.

3. Type in outlook.exe followed by a space, and then /safe and hit enter.

4. Then, exit out of Outlook and go back again, and everything should
function normally.

I'm not totally sure what safe mode is, but Corrie said it has something to
do with eliminating add-ins that are active when Outlook is running
normally.

I also asked Corrie about the problem I'm having with being unable to
navigate entries in an Outlook e-mail group via the arrow keys, and he said
that FS is aware of that issue as well.

He indicated that we should all stand by for future Jaws updates that will
be aimed at correcting these issues.

Hello, everyone.

This morning, I just discovered a major problem with Outlook 2016 when
originating an e-mail.

When I start a new e-mail with control N, I can no longer type a contact
address into the "to" field. When I do this, I get kicked out of my new
e-mail, and get placed back into my inbox. In other words, Outlook seems to
crash, and then is re-started after a few seconds.

Interestingly, I can go to my contacts list, and copy and paste the e-mail
address into the to field with no problem. I can also reply to e-mails with
no problem.

Once again, the issue occurs when originating an e-mail and trying to access
someone in my contacts list.

I am using Jaws 18, Outlook 2016 with Office 365, and Windows 7 here.

Has anyone recently experienced this issue, and if so, have you found a fix?

I am eligible to upgrade to Jaws 2018, and will do so when I get the chance.

However, in the meantime, I'd like to be able to quickly originate e-mails
in the usual way if at all possible.

David:

I'm currently using the 64-bit version of Jaws version 18.0.4350.

My computer here is a 64-bit machine.

My next step will indeed be to download the latest version of Jaws 2018, to
see if that corrects the issue.

I'm also going to try Outlook with NVDA.

Other steps that have been suggested include running Jaws in user default
mode; doing a Jaws repair, and checking Outlook accessibility settings.

When I get some uninterrupted time here, I'll try these various steps,
probably in the order noted above, to see if I can correct the situation.

Tom;
well, you did mention your running jaws 18, but, are you using the
J18.0.4350enu-x64.exe

also you may want to try the J2018.1710.42enu-x64.exe most likely your
office updated, which broke the autofill in outlook.
if the jaws 18 fix doesn't work then go to the 2018.
I had a similar issue,
2018 seems to work in outlook,
however, freedom scientific hasn't released a fix for jaws 18.

If you installed a nontandem version of JAWS, the update feature won't be
available. Keep in mind that this has nothing to do with whether you are
using JAWS for home use only or whether you are using it for both home and

Doesn't matter, you could eliminate the Jaws icon, what they are on your
desktop are shortcuts; they are a convenience but they aren't the actual
program?

I don't know which version you had before, but possibly someone re-named it
to just Jaws.

You can run multiple versions of Jaws, e.g. I often run Jaws 16 for some
things that Jaws 18 or the 2018Beta won't work as well with and vice versa.

[JAWS-Users] Still Unable To Navigate An E-mail Group In Outlook 2016 after latest Jaws Update

2017-10-19 Thread Tom Behler
Hello again, everyone.

As I reported earlier, I just updated my Windows 7 laptop here to Jaws
18.0.4350.

I was hoping the update would solve a problem that I have been experienceing
with e-mail groups in Outlook 2016.

Basically, for the past few months, I have found myself unable to navigate
the names in an Outlook 2016 e-mail group via the up and down arrow keys. I
used to be able to do this with no problem.

Now, it is very difficult to determine exactly who is in an e-mail group,
which, of course, leads to difficulties when trying to update or edit the
group.

Has anyone else experienced this issue, and if so, have you found a fix for
it?

Again, I'm using Jaws 18.0.4350 with Windows 7 and (Outlook 2016.

I don't quite understand what problem you're having. Is your Favorites

When I am in the TO: field, I type the first letter of a name. With
previous versions of JAWS, the first name beginning with that first letter
in my autocomplete list would be spoken. If I was to hit the down-arrow
key, the next name in the list would be spoken. I could down-arrow through
the list until I found the name I wanted. When I hit the tab key, the name
would be inserted in to the TO: field and I could begin typing the next
to-name and repeat the process for this second name. None of this is
working with the new release of JAWS. After I have typed that first letter
and hit the down-arrow key, I hear a beep; indicating that I can't
down-arrow through the list. So, it isn't that JAWS just isn't announcing
it.

It really has nothing to do with the manufacturer of a laptop. I have
owned three HP laptops over the years; as well as Acer and Averatec's.

For the most part, a laptop is a laptop; they mainly vary in how the
keyboard is layed out.

*CONSIDERATIONS*

Most manufactuers install a lot of "bloatware" on the laptop. When you
got it, did you get rid of all that extra crap?

You could start with a program like PC DeCrapifier.

Have you made sure you don't have conflicting anti-virus programs running?
Again, a lot of manufacturers include trial anti-virus programs. Uninstall
them if you're not going to use that particular one; most of them supply
McAfee or Symantek.

Third, look at your bootup programs. Open the Msconfig program and go to
that list. Uncheck things you don't need to necessarily run at start-up.
Many programs that you install think they need to run at start-up, it
isn't wholely necessary. Example: you don't really need Dropbox or
Microsoft Office etc. running at startup. You do, of course, want your
anti-virus, various windows services, and of course, Jaws to run.

As somebody else mentioned, you can find websites to help you identify
programs and/or processes that you can then consider not being necessary.

After you make adjustments in your MsConfig file, you need to enable
"selective startup" so that only those items you designated will run at
start-up.

As somebody else mentioned, if you had a dual-boot setup, you will have a
delay that they specified so you can choose which operating system you
wanted to start with.

It may also make a difference if you have a regular disk drive (not a
solidstate drive), to clean it (get rid of unnecessary and temporary
files), then take a look at the defragmentation report to see if you c
ould gain some efficiencies by de-fragging your disk.

This won't affect boot-up times, but it will speed up your access. When
you shutdown, you could choose to put your laptop in Sleep mode rather
than completely shutting it down. This will put your currently open
programs and windows into memory, so that when you wake it up, all you
need to do is enter your password and you'd be up and running again.

And, as a last resort, sometimes you just get so much garbage in the
installation of windows and programs, that just doing a clean re-install
of windows and restoring your programs and files after that would be an
option. To me, it's a pain in the butt, so the slow boot-up times would
really have to bother me to do that.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer

My computer had been starting slowly for a long time. I was having trouble
with Office 365, so I called the Microsoft Disability
Desk. The lady who helped me with Office 365 also helped me to speed up my
computer at startup by disabling a number of programs in msconfig. I don't
recommend looking at this lightly because doing so without knowing what you
are doing could keep your computer from starting properly. once I understood
what she was doing, things indeed went much faster, even though I put back
a few programs I wanted. Thus, your issues may involve JAWS by itself, be in
combination wwith other programs, or not JAWS related at all.

Hello, everyone.

I have recently noticed a problem with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC version 17.0.

For some reason, words are often run together in the document when I'm
trying to read it.

This problem does not appear on the visual screen. In other words, if
someone sighted looks at the document, it looks fine, with no words or
characters run together.

This seems to occur mainly with Microsoft Word documents that have been
converted to a PDF file format.

I'm thinking that this problem might be a Jaws issue, because the document
displays fine visually.

Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, is there something I need to
change either in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or Jaws to make documents read more
properly?

Thanks as always!
