Does anyone have an unused set of KR-1 plans they are willing to sell?

Gary

I'm kind of wondering the same.  Not that it's my business, but I've got frequent flyer miles with the knee surgeons and currently have 1-1/2 artificial knees.  Doesn't keep me out of either plane, nor has any of the numerous knee surgeries I've had over the years.

Hi Gary. I’m curious as to why you can’t fly it after knee surgery.

KR> KR-1 for sale

2018-09-17 Thread Mark Langford via KRnet
OK, I changed the subject once, but apparently control-z'd it back
again. Trying to allow the "KR-1 for sale" email to get through, but
without the digest baggage, and making it easier to find by changing the
subject to what it actually is "a KR-1 for sale. I've moderated Gary
until he learns to change the subject and delete the excess from the
previous message, so he can't reply online. Email him directly at
garybi...@hotmail.com. Would've been nice if he'd included his phone
number and a location in that post too. This is all covered in the list
rules, which everyone is supposed to read before they post to the list.
If you don't know where they are, it's in the footer that everybody
keeps reposting a million times, or at http://www.krnet.org/info.html.

KR> KR-1 For Sale

2017-08-29 Thread Lou and Linda via KRnet
We've inherited a KR-1 RG project. The fuselage, wings, and tail are done.
Wings are currently off for storage. The cockpit and instrument panel are
mostly complete. The VW engine has some aircraft conversion features and turns
over, but has not run in a long time. The cowling, propeller, and spinner are
included. The retractable landing gear is installed. The canopy is included but
needs mounting, and the plane needs to be painted. A box of plans, records,
pictures, etc. is included. The project has always been stored indoors and to
our knowledge has never flown. Asking $2900. Plane is located in Klamath Falls,
Oregon. For pictures and more details, email luckyin...@gmail.com. Thanks!

who said this, also come from Joe at revmaster? I know that rand had
offered a three blade plastic ground adjustable for a while in the

To echo what Steve said, the rigidity of the carbon fiber blades on the

I just spoke with Joe at Revmaster. He confirmed that the Revmaster engines
with their extra bearing and case design are fine with composite propellers
(including IVOprops). Other VW conversions may not be depending on how modified
the design is from the auto engine. In fact, Joe told me that the Revmaster was
originally designed to work with a 14 lb aluminum propeller!

All this direct from the Revmaster man himself.

Panic over.

Should call RevMaster (760) 244-3074. The RevMaster engines have extra
bearings, cast case and mine is even setup for a constant speed prop. I
also have a Great Plains engine conversion which is restricted to wood
props only. The Great Plains engine is for sale (336) 977-3922.

To echo what Steve said, the rigidity of the carbon fiber blades on the IVO
prop as well as the Warp Drive props are known to cause harmonic vibrations
that are detrimental to the life of the crankshaft in that the harmonics can
cause crankshafts to crack and eventually fail. It is strongly recommended
to use wood or wood core props only on VW conversion engines.

Of course with Experimental Aircraft, you are allowed to build contrary to
recommendations. But please be aware of the potential issues.

Been sat a long time in storage, low compression (cylinder wall corrosion I
guess). Still turned over and ran but developed approx half power.

It will go up for sale as soon as the conversion to the 2100d is complete.

Re: KR> KR-1 Revmaster 2100D Conversion

2017-03-11 Thread James Buck via KRnet
Hi what was wrong with the 1600?

Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

On Sat, Mar 11, 2017 at 2:41 PM, Tristan Vincent-Philpot via
KRnet wrote: Hi All,

I have been watching this list for a while as I was looking for a KR-1 to buy.
Well, I have finally bought a previously completed but never flown project. I
now need to modify it to swap out the original 1600cc motor for my 2100D -
actually the builder/previous owner is doing this and other work for me under
my guidance and approval. I thought I would publish the progress here in case
it helps anyone else, or others here might be able to offer their thoughts as
the modification proceeds.

The first challenges encountered when comparing engines are:

1.  The Remaster intake system is on top of the cylinders, whereas the original
custom intake was displaced laterally outside the cylinders so the cowling
does not fit. The builder has suggested and I have agreed that he modify the
Remaster intake positioning to the same place as the 1600 motor.

2.  The original mount (for the 1600 engine) can be modified slightly for the
revised mounting geometry of the 2100d but the space between firewall and the
remaster case is slightly too small for the Dual magneto setup. I had been
strongly considering swapping the magnetos for a SDS Coil Pack Ignition system
anyhow, so this has just made that decision easier. I will of course need a
battery backup system for a non-magneto system. I will design and install that
myself.

3.  The unfared stub exhausts of the 1600 will be replaced by a more
aerodynamic Revmaster exhaust system, but this will entail modifying the lower
cowling to hose this arrangement internally. I will speak to Revmaster to see
which of their exhaust systems (Q2, or KR-2 etc) is the best candidate for this

The builder has also agreed to lower the seat base and recline the seat back,
strengthening the structure for a rollover hoop/headrest, and shoulder harness

KR> KR-1 Revmaster 2100D Conversion

2017-03-11 Thread Tristan Vincent-Philpot via KRnet
Hi All,

I will speak to Revmaster to see
which of their exhaust systems (Q2, or KR-2 etc) is the best candidate for this
application.

4. The Remaster Prop hub sits 3.5-4 inches further forward than the original
1600 engine hub, so the cowling will be modified to incorporate this too.

The builder has also agreed to lower the seat base and recline the seat back,
strengthening the structure for a rollover hoop/headrest, and shoulder harness
attachment too.

One day into the project and lots of challenges encountered. Let’s hope this
isn’t a sign…

No, but I'm guessing it will be a bit on the heavy side for a KR1,

No plywood on the fuselage. Foam center with two layers of glass on
the outside and one layer of glass on the inside.

Dennis asked for feedback and one of my several observations and
suggestions was to remove the brackets and cut lightening holes in
the ribs. Several other areas of minor overbuild but overall I can't
fault his workmanship.

ok no retracts, duh, shoulda gone back and looked. ideally I'd like
to build a tri-retract, original size KR1, with engine back against
the firewall as original, and with a normalizing turbocharger. the
main retracts are easy. the nose can swing back halfway into a center
pocket (I think). as to a small normalizing turbocharger, tight
squeeze and heat issues. which is why it would most likely be added
later, in a phase two.

point being, I am happy to see some added complexity is possible with
enough thought and skill!

Well I must say Dennis is building very different from what is normally
seen. The photos bring up a lot of questions. You may have mentioned it
before, but is the sides of this fuselage fiberglass instead of plywood? Also
are the rib to spar shelf brackets temporary? Neat canopy. I am thinking
this guy has built things other than airplanes before. Great that he is
building in a basement just like me!! Probably shouldn't have invited him
to this group as it may corrupt him. I like that he has done so much
without feedback, that he is building trike gear, and that he is building the
best KR. A KR1.

It will fly with a 2si 70 hp two cycle water cooled engine. The

KR> KR-1 Corvair...

I recall hearing of an O-320 on a KR, but I believe it crashed and killed
the pilot. Not sure of the details or whether the engine was a factor.

KR> KR-1 Corvair...

2015-01-21 Thread tinyauto at aol.com

I thought a neat engine for the KR would be the Yamaha Genesis (Vector
snowmobile) engine. 120-150 HP in a tiny 4 stroke package. There is even a
commercial conversion adapter being made for it now that adapts the Rotax
gearbox to the engine. I think the running weight is somewhere around 160 lbs.
Not sure if that includes radiator.

I don't know of one, but Richard Shirley has a 3300 Jabiru on his KR-1,
which is essentially the same power, but lighter. Some weight in the
tail would be required, and the wing loading would be high, and landing
speed correspondingly higher than with a lighter engine. But that's
essentially what I plan on doing, with more wing area and a longer tail
to tame pitch sensitivity. Loads of fun would be assured, as well as
200 mph plus, straight and level.

Steve Trentmans's turbine KR-2T has flown plenty, but it's a
gas-guzzler, at something like 12 gph. There are details from Steve at
http://www.n56ml.com/strent.html, and also in one of the Pine Bluff
gathering sites on www.KRnet.org.

KR> KR-1 or single seat KR-2S

2015-01-06 Thread laser147 at juno.com
Jeff said,

"Despite Paul's criticism, the VW powerplant works pretty well. Mike
Stirewalt, who will undoubtedly chime in here, owns the KR 1 1/2, built
by Ken Cottle, then sold to Steve Bennett, then to Mike. If I recall
correctly, it is a stock KR-2 that is narrowed a bit to make a
comfortable single seat cockpit. I know Mike likes to fly it high and
long and it performs reasonably well. Build it light and clean."

That's all true, almost. Ken Cottle built this KR-1? from KR-1 plans,
widening the fuselage to 24" (I think it's 24" - could be 30" - losing my
memory) at the cockpit. He lengthened it 7 inches ahead of the spar for
additional leg room since Ken's a tall guy. I imagine the extra leg room
is one reason Steve Bennett wanted this plane. Ken added 14" to the
rear. Ken narrowed the stub wings a bit from plans and then used Diehl
skins and tail feathers. Looking at receipts this afternoon I saw the
receipt (3/2/86) for the wing skins - $800. Tailfeathers from Diehl were
$450. Wingspan is 20' 8" and yes, this plane loves flying high thanks to
the nice wing area and the GP 2180 has no problem with high altitude
airports. It has an EFS-2 Ellison carb and currently a Sterba 52'x56"
prop that allows the engine to run full throttle at 3100 at altitude
(10.5 to 14.5) where it cruises at 149 MPH at 3.5 to 4 GPH. Fuel on
board is 21 gallons. I've never gotten around to narrowing my cooling
inlets so I'm carrying a ton of cooling drag - pushing air back out the
front. Probably get at least another 5 MPH if I ever do that. I should
have modified my cooling inlets a long time ago.

There's nothing to criticise about the VW, either Great Plains or
Revmaster. GP engines are less expensive to maintain since Revmaster is
proprietery with some engine components. A nice Corvair with that
additional bearing and an Ellison carb would be a truly wonderful smooth
engine for little money. But my plane came with what it's got and it
flies beautifully.

Setting a KR-2 up as a single-seater is a great idea though. Look at
George McHenry's adaptation for perhaps the most luxurious example. That
extra room in the cockpit and on the panel is nice.

My first KR, a standard KR-2 which I sold in 1989, had sling seats and a
center stick. I used to sit in the center and enjoy the head room and
space on each side for charts & other stuff. When I occasionally took
someone flying in it, it was not much fun except for short local flights.
I'm sure the S is a big improvement with two up.

KR> KR-1 drawings missing from plans

2013-06-28 Thread Tim Hoversten
Greetings from OSH!

I purchased a set of KR-1 plans from Jeanette Rand in Feb of 2009, and am
getting ready to start building. I was reviewing the plans booklet and
revisions, and noticed there are some drawings that are missing.?

On page 22, step 8.1.1 refers to drawing #9 concerning rudder pedals and pg 25,
step 8.1.5 refers to rudder cables and nicopress fittings, also on drawing #9.

On page 49, steps 14.2 and 14.9 refer to back up plates in the firewall area
and to drawing #13

Also on page 49, step 14.9 refers to drawing #14, regarding engine mounts and
mounting hardware.

Is there any way to get drawings 9, 13 and 14 for the KR-1?

Looking at the photos on KOAT TV and compared to the 1997 KR Gathering
photos, it is definately Tom Bagnatto's old plane, so if Steve Glover was
flying it, it's Steve.

I sent this earlier, but as seems to be normal for KRNet, my post apparently
didn't go through.

I just talked to Steve.  As reported on the news, he's pretty sore, but OK.

Steve was en route to the Gathering.  The weather was degrading while he was
crossing NM and he had to land in Albuquerque Double Eagle Airport (AEG) while
a squawl line was passing.  Winds were 28 Gusting to 35 at 70 degrees off from
either runway.  He simply ran out of options and had to attempt the landing.
The little plane simply didn't have enough rudder to deal with that much of a
crosswind component.  Steve says he almost had it when he dragged a wing tip
and things started going bad.  He got whacked pretty good by his back pack that
was tucked in the back of the canopy, so is pretty sore from that, but is
otherwise OK.  No doubt he'll be finding new bruises over the next few days.

The plane is badly damaged, but rebuildable.  Steve says he is contemplating
buying a ticket to St Louis to attend the Gathering, then fly back to ABQ to
rent a truck to haul the plane home to rebuild.  So, We may see him at the
Gathering this weekend and he'll have a story to tell.

I just talked to Steve. He's a bit beat up, but OK. Something like 26 mph
crosswinds gusting to 35 mph, and ran out of rudder. He's catching a
commercial flight out tomorrow and will be ready for root beer when he
arrives at the Gathering. The plane is repairable, but then Steve could fix

I uploaded some photos of the project to the group site.  They're in the folder
N7753.

Earlier this summer I pressure washed the plane to get the flaking paint off
which is part of why it looks like it does.  I started sanding and primering,
which is why portions of it are grey.  It really needs a product to remove the
rest of the paint before being reworked.  I saw something on here about a
product that'll take paint off of fiberglass which would be perfect.

For someone looking to get a jumpstart on a KR-1 build, I have a KR-1
restoration project for sale - N7753.  The registration is still in the
original builder's name.  It was in flying condition at one point and has a
temporary airworthiness certificate, but that was a long time ago.  The story I
was given when I bought it was that the plane was in a barn when the barn
collapsed. According to the logbooks, the original builder ran it off field
during the high-speed taxi testing.  It sat for about a year before he
installed a new prop on it.

The fiberglass parts of the plane are in pretty beat-up shape, but the main
parts of the wooden fuselage, including fiberglass the winglets, are in pretty
good shape.  One wing isn't too bad, a few bumps here and there, but one will
almost need to be completely rebuilt.  It looks like there was a problem with
the fuel tank in the wing that needs to be rebuilt, because someone took a saw
to upper glass/foam.  The elevator has a smashed hole in it where it looks like
a board went all the way through.  The cockpit is in decent shape, although the
instrument panel is gone.  The retractable landing gear is in good shape.  The
cockpit bubble is pretty good with some minor scuffing.  The woodwork in the
fuselage is really well done and has held up nicely over the years.

I've started the restoration process, sanding/primer painting.  I haven't
gotten very far and was mainly just trying to get a layer of paint on the glass
to keep it from deteriorating.  I can see that it would be a very nice and
sleek plane when it's done.

I also have a set of plans and some cloth that are included.   I used the
engine on another project, and it is not included in the sale.

I'm asking $1000 obo.  I'd prefer local pickup, but I can deliver it if it's
not too far from SLC.

If you're interested, I can send some pictures of it's current condition.

If you would be in the market for a boat stage KR1 that has been done
rite with tons of extras, ( Sort of as a parts spare ) I have almost
everything you need to finish the air frame. At a price that could
save you several thousand. And I might even be able to deliver it
for just travel expenses. This could be a cheap way to put your
restoration into fast forward. And I guarantee you won't be
disappointed with the workmanship on this project.

Look to see just what the top and bottom spar material is. As long as it is
Stica Spruce or Clear Doug Fur. You will be fine. You can use a power hand
planner and remove the web on both sides. As l have done this very same
thing but only to one side and just at the end. So I just used a power hand
planner and removed the web. The smaller the cut the more control you
have. Don't get in a hurry.

Of coarse, this is only the case as long as any other webbing on the project
(fuselage) is correct. don't think you can correct the fuselage by
glassing it. That is just no good and it adds unneeded weight. So if the
fuselage is wrong, it will be good fire wood this winter. But check out any
other installed webbing to see that it is installed correctly before
thinking you have something that can be worked.

That was a good spot. I'm not sure how many folks would have caught
that error. Is the center section spar installed in the fuselage
already? Have the spars run through a planer and remove the ply,
check the woodwork and rebuild.

If you have "grave concerns"about the airplane you may never
really be comfortable with it. Getting a second or third opinion
after a close inspection may change your mind or you may want to
spend your time on a project more to your liking.

Ok, I got the KR-1 form a friend that had it stored forever. It was however,
in far worse shape than I had thought that it was. I firgure that it is
repairable, but I am in the process of calculating how much time and money
it will take. Upon investigation, I discovered that the sheer web of the
main center spar has the grain running horizontal. Looking at the manual, it
shows that the grain is to be verticle. I am just learning about wood
structure airplanes, so help here is REALLY needed. There are some big RED
flags that I see in the construction of this plane. Am I correct in thinking
that having the sheer web grain in the wrong direction is a really bad
thing? I have some grave concerns now about restoring this plane.
Thanks for any help

Netter's,

As most of you know, we took over operations from RR this past year.  So one
can imagine there has been some growing pains while attempting to get things
moving again.  Between a blown out knee, moving in and out of hangars for
due to potential flooding, and now with moving into a larger facility in
attempt to streamline and be more productive, this has been a HUGE
undertaking.   We are working diligently to get the remaining orders out
that we have and anticipate having everything caught up by the end of the
year or shortly after depending on temperatures for the glass work. (Thank
you for your patience to those we have outstanding orders with)

Currently there is myself, and my partner Eric primarily doing EVERYTHING
for production!  We do not have enough revenue to hire employees as there
still is not enough volume as we attempt to reenergize the KR design in the
homebuilt community.  This IS NOT our primary method for making a living.
Eric is still on active duty with the US Navy and lives a couple hours away.
He is instrumental in taking care of all website and administrative duties
for nV Aero. He travels to the hangar to help with production, etc. when his
time permits based upon his current Op Temp.  Otherwise, production is
basically me.  I do the ordering, stocking, fabricating and any other gopher
jobs required.  We have some items contracted out such as welding, precision
machining, etc.

Eric and I have a desire to provide quality, affordable parts and materials
for people to build their KR aircraft.  We certainly didn't get into this to
get rich.  The first thing to understand is nV Aero does not own the rights
to the plans for any of the KR aircraft. Jeanette has a price that she sells
the plans to us. Based upon that price we charge enough to cover our
shipping and administrative costs (picking up plans from RR which is 40
miles away, and other expenses associated with packaging and shipping.)  Due
to printing costs Jeanette has raised the price of the KR-1 plans to us.
The drawings and additional copies she provides are at current market rates
from the printers.  The book is the same as everyone else has received for
the past several years but those are rapidly running out so I anticipate
another increase once the current inventory is depleted.

This brings me to Mr. Caudle's post.  I do feel he should have contacted me
first before posting to the net with his "displeasure".  I think I addressed
it fairly well above but let me be clear, WE buy the plans for $95.  We sell
at $114.95.  We found that is easier for flat rate shipping for our shopping
cart system due to the various destinations in the US and abroad.  So, $25
for "shipping" less up to 6% for credit card processing if a Corporate card
is used. This leaves us $108.05. Subtract $5.70 for Priority Mail with
delivery confirmation leaves $102.35 less $95 for RR leaves us $7.35 for our
time to pick up plans from RR, print packing lists (The packing list was
with Mr. Caudle's registration page), registration pages, package and get
them to the post office or however we ship.  Clearly we are making a TON of
money for the hassle.

I am a little displeased myself with Mr. Caudle's post given our original
correspondence.  Nothing was misleading when he inquired about the plans and
their quality. I guess I should have been VERY specific as to the additional
pages showing the new dimensions from the KR-2 changes with drawings instead
of photos. You can see my email to him below.

I have KR plans purchased directly from Jeanette. I gave her $60 I think
it was, and she gave me the plans in person. As odd as this may sound, I
didn't buy my KR drawings because I was wanting a KR. I buy plans mostly as
a collector, used more for education. I am a member of the KR group
because I enjoy the groups activity, the "get-r-done" attitude, and the ideas
that come from the members as they build their aircraft. The KR has evolved
into something other than what the plans offer. I don't think you want to
build either a KR1 or 2 without a HUGE dose of internet research, going to
the yearly fly-in, or visiting one on one with those who have been there.
If you don't do at least 2 of the three you will be sorry down the line.

What do I think of the plans? I think I could build a rocket ship of an
airplane from them using the new airfoil. To power the airplane I would use
the 120 HP Yamaha Vector snowmobile engine like is being used in the
gyrocopters. I bet it would cruise well past redline.

What am I building? Streak Shadow from an old kit. I want to fly from my
property (short) and be able to cruise at least 100 mph. I have my eyes
on the Yamaha for this airplane too. Same weight/size as the Geo metro, but
twice the power.

If a KR is what you want, then a KR you shall have. There is massive
amount of information out there. I have never met a person who isn't willing
to share their construction work.

Go to it.
