And that is the main question: Is there still an effect, a benefit from all
these improvements even if the newest kernel is run on the 386 DX 40
mentioned above? Or, in other words, can it be recommended to upgrade even
such old machines to the
ver with Debian 2.1 and kernel 2.0.38 running here on a 386DX40
without problems. However, the old RAM modules were critical. They caused
Linux to suddenly reboot from time to time so I had to replace them by
carefully selected ones.

filters for RX and TX when using soundmodem. I have to ask here what exactly

Just for information: Packet Radio using the sound card requires a

for other programs with the same funtionality on _client_ side, eg.
for monitoring your local QRG for who is QRV.
I _didn't_ want to start a listen on some remote server. This
obviously does not make any sense. I wanted to start some sort of
listen program on my _local_ box, ie. the one I sit in front of, as
user without root permissions.

Just remove this port if you do not use it or comment it out (insert a

s, the PacketTwin board may support DMA 0 but in some
cases, there are problems on some mainboards not expecting that
some device uses DMA 0. DMA 2 is IIRC used for the floppy disk

That's one of the neat SuSE secrets. In some cases, it decides
that you do not need to have CD support anymore and simply
disables it.
That's no pointless complaint, no, several people experienced
exactly that behaviour when installing SuSE. It seems to be version-
independent, can appear with almost every SuSE distribution.
Guess such things are the price one has to pay for "easy
automated installation". In the end, such routines can make more
trouble than a manual install.
