UTF-8 and the Tufte Book document class
Hi all, I am writing a book using the Tufte Book document class, with the Tufte font included through ``\usepackage{ETbb}`` in the preamble. This works fine. But the encoding is T1, and producing a PDF fails when I change it to UTF8. I intend to add some Chinese text, and I either have to get UTF8 to work with this document or get Chinese characters with the present T1 encoding (but that is not the preferred approach, given that LyX 2.4 will be UTF8 throughout, if I am not mistaken, so I might as well get that sorted now). The main language of the document is Dutch, with bits in German, ancient Greek, French, and other languages. I am using LyX 2.3.7 on an M2 MacBook Air and an M1 iMac. Any helpful hints are much appreciated. RH -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users
Backups are not written nearly as often as they should be
Hi all, I have LyX set up to make backups when saving and also make backups (the term seems wrong for the automatic snapshots that these are) every two minutes. But when I look at the directory those files are supposed to be written to, there is a file there, but it not up to date, neither as an auto-saved snapshot nor as duplicate (a backup proper) - it is older than it should be, up to over an hour older sometimes. Am I overlooking something? I checked the path, and went from using a Dropbox directory to using one on my SSD, but results are the same. Before reporting this as a bug, I thought I should mention this here. I am on LyX 2.3.7, on macOS 13.4, Apple Silicon chip. Dutch 'trema' not handled as required in hyphenation
Hi there fellow LyXers, I noticed that the Dutch ‘trema’ (the dots above ü ä ï ö ë) isn’t removed when the word is hyphenated directly before the letter with the trema (it should, to comply with grammar rules. In LaTeX, \usepackage{newunicodechar} \makeatletter \newunicodechar{ë}{\@trema e} \newunicodechar{ï}{\@trema i} \newunicodechar{ö}{\@trema o} \newunicodechar{ä}{\@trema a} \newunicodechar{ü}{\@trema u} \makeatother takes care of this, but adding the same lines to the preamble in LyX doesn’t. Adjusting the vertical placement of margin notes
I write most of my longer copy using the (beautiful and eminently readable) Tufte Book and Tufte Handout document class. One advantage of this is that footnotes are displayed as margin notes. If a note is added near the bottom of the page, though, this causes the note text to extend beyond the lower edge of the main text column. Obviously, the note should either scoot upwards, enough for its last line to land at the same vertical position as the main text column’s last line, or the note should break off at that vertical position, and continue on the next page. I guess the number of editing tricks I miss isn’t even that large. I would like to be able to select, change, and delete around a word and a sentence, like I can in Vim. And to do a ‘light speed’ jump to any part of the visible text by typing some shortcut and then typing the first two letters of the word I want to jump to; in Vim, and in Obsidian (using a plugin) the matches are then marked with a letter, and hitting that letter takes me there. On top of that, going back and forward through the locations where my cursor has been placed, and like you say, persistent undo would be wonderful. I have no idea how to do this in LFUN, and no time, frankly, to figure out if that is even possible. I now find myself reverting to Obsidian or Vim to write longer copy, which is less than ideal. Chicago 16 Bibliography Style
I used LyX to write an article that will be appearing in an edited volume, and the editors have requested that the LaTeX file I send them should use the bibliographic style employed in the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition. At the following website, I found the examples below (N = Note, B = Bibliography). Does anyone know which styles available with LyX would come closest to matching this Chicago 16 style? Or, by editing the exported LaTeX file, is there a way to get an exact match (I'd like to avoid biblatex, since I'm not familiar with it, and time is not my friend.) In the second pair of examples, the book title needs to be in italic. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Bruce https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/717/03/ N: 1. Work-around for missing text style "no spell-check"
Dear Lyx’ers, My PhD thesis will contain lots of text in medieval Dutch. This means that spell checking becomes a problem. There is a very old feature request for a text style “no spell-check”, or something similar, that would enable users to have portions of the text skipped when spell-checking. As far as I’m aware, no work is being done to write code for such a feature, and I myself unfortunately am unable to do. But perhaps one of you has been in a similar predicament, and has found a work-around? If so I’d be happy to hear about it. Kind regards, Hiram The Netherlands

I just wanted to know if it was possible to use the dvips colors for my hyperref options, or use them at all at this point. I think I didn't make that clear before. Placing \usepackage[usenames,dvipsnames]{color} in the preamble is supposed to give access to 68 defined colors beyond the basic ones you've listed; those are the ones I want.

Why 2 bibliographies?
Hello, I use LyX 1.5.5 with Inlinebib and Koma-script book with in-line full citations style (working almost perfect). The problem is the final bibliography (which would resume and sort all references already cited in the text): the unwanted result is 2 bibliographies: 1st one with correct Koma chapter character style 2nd one is with another (roman?) character style Every reference is listed in just one of the two, with almost no criteria, perhaps some of the most complex references are in 2nd bibliography... And perhaps there are some more references in the 1st one. No references left outside the 2 bibliographies. I'm puzzled... -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Why-2-bibliographies--tp534947p534947.html Sent from the LyX - Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
natbib again
Hi everybody I am still a newcomer in using LyX and I am still encountering problems with natbib. May I ask for your help once again? 1) When I try to install natbib via MiKTeX, I get a MiKTeX problem report: FTP: couldn't retrieve (RETR failed) the specified file I have tried other mirrors without success (when choosing other mirrors I get the message: "invalid easy handle"). In advance, thank you very much! Kind regards Alfred
natbib.sty
Hi I am a newcomer in using LyX. May I kindly ask you for your assistance with the problem I am struggling with: I have downloaded natbib.zip and unzipped it to my LyX folder but when I am trying to convert into .pdf a document of a colleague in which he has used natbib for the bibliography I get an empty output file: 1) Required file tex\latex\natbib\natbib.sty is missing. ... Package will be installed from ... 2) After pressing the install button I get two successive windows with the messages a) An empty output file was generated. b) LaTeX Error: File 'natbib.sty' not found. Furthermore, although I have downloaded and installed(?) natbib, LaTeX configuration of LyX does not find natbib. I would highly appreciate your help! Regards Alfred

How to nest enumerate environments in Theorems
Hi LyXers, sorry for a perhaps silly question, but I was unable to solve it with the User Guide. In AMS-style, I need to enumerate items inside Example, Theorem, or Lemma environments I want them to look roughly as follows: Theorem (i) blabla (ii) blablu kjkjkjk oioioi oioio (iii) blubla oipoipoi ipoipoipoipoipoi The only way I was able to nest an enum environment inside a theorem is by putting in the Theorem then do an enum and increase its depth. Unfortunately, this produces the layout Theorem (i) blabla (ii) blablu (iii) blubla But I don't want - the empty line after "Theorem" - the exaggerated indentation Wat is the trick, or where can I read how to do it ? Thx, H.Peter Gumm

Custom export
I have LyX 1.3.7 installed on an XP platform. The problem is that I cannot figure out how to get LyX to export LaTeX in a custom way. What I really need is for LyX to work from one directory and output to another. The custom export was my approach to resolve this. Does anyone have an alternative way to solve this or advice as to how to get LyX to write LaTeX files into a directory different from where the .lyx files reside? TIA. BTW, I searched for many combinations of the keywords "custom" and "export" and found nothing that worked. This could be because I used invalid syntax or whatever. So if you have a suggestion like write something to my preferences, please let me know exactly what to write, because I have tried to no avail. Sincerely, -Jaime

Re: Page number Alignment
2006/5/30, Paul A. Rubin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: If you want the page number bottom right on every page, some of this can be simplified. (Menu instructions below follow the LyX 1.4.x layout, but the same can be done in LyX 1.3.x.) First, go to Document->Settings...->Page Layout->Page style: and set it to fancy. This takes the place of the \pagestyle{fancy} command. Add the other commands Andreas recommended to the preamble (although you only need the ones with empty arguments, such as \cfoot{}, if there's something in the header or footer you want to turn off, such as a centered page number in the footer). I don't think you will need to add \thispagestyle{fancy} to the text. /Paul thanks it works... but not on every page... on the first page of the chapter, the pagenumber still align to center.. is there still a way to do it ?

XY-Pic and LyX
Hi all, rumors are that LyX 1.4 is not going to support XY-Pic anymore. I cannot believe that the developers are serious about this. If they were, the reasons for me to use LyX would be gone. To name these reasons specifically, they are: Instant-preview XY-Pic and, last but not least Uwe's installer, which makes it so easy to get LyX up and running under Windows. Ironically, the two bugs that are reported in bugzilla regarding XY-Pic can be circumvented. I have just found two easy solutions and documented them in a new chapter "Hacks" of my manual "Using XY-Pic in LyX" at http://www.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/~gumm/LyX/xypic/xypic.pdf (The html-translation - supplied by Stephen Harris - has not yet been updated.) Re: lyxwin136-small-04 and instant preview
Thanks for all the advices to my mail. Most of the problem solutions I knew, my point was to suggest making the default behaviour for the windows version of LyX "reasonable" without the need to tweak the system and to scan the FAQs. On the unsolved points Helge Hafting wrote: > Turn the preview off. Then the formulas remain in the size used > when editing them. Perhaps not as pretty, but ok nonetheless. I need instant preview because I am using xypic extensively. As my first LyX-project I wrote a manual on how to use xypic in LyX: http://www.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/~gumm/LyX/xypic/xypic.pdf Without instant preview for xy-figures I would not see a compelling reason for myself to use LyX. In the Windows programs I am used to, this never causes a problem. Why should I have a problem with LyX ? > It is common in most editors _in windows_, which isn't the main > platform for lyx. Still, it can be done if you can interest a developer Yes, if you want to make LyX popular under Windows, this should be adapted. Also, it would be nice if C-v from the Windows Clipboard would work. Re: lyxwin136-small-04 and instant preview
Uwe, thanks for correcting the instant-preview glitch in your installer. In my eyes, the installer is a great step ahead to make LyX popular amongst Windows-Users who are typically not willing to install all sorts of auxiliary programs (MinGW,Imagemagick, ...) before being able to try out a new unknown application. Thanks for the great work! I have the following suggestions for improvement, some may concern the installer, some LyX itself: - I am using LyX with slightly larger screen fonts than in the default configuration. (Getting old.) Unfortunately, the math formulas displayed by instant preview dont scale correspondingly, they remain in the small fonts. - Generating pdf-files, one obtains rather ugly bit-mapped fonts, until one finds the trick (in the FAQs) of changing the fonts size to "ae" in Document->Layout. Why not making this the default from the beginning ? - I typically start LyX by doubleclicking on a .lyx-file. This opens LyX with the file as expected. When the document is more or less in final form, I scrutinize the the dvi-file for error. Unfortunately: = each C-d starts a new instance of Yap. This means that each time I have to adapt Yap again by enlarging fonts, etc. = Going back to LyX I sometimes do it by doubleclicking the .lyx-file again. This opens a new LyX on the same file. At the end I discover that I have several LyXes open on the same file. Oops!! Which one do I want to save now ? ==> How about an warning message when opening LyX on a file that is already open in LyX. This behaviour is common in most editors. Greetings, H.Peter Gumm

really sorry for that.. maybe it caused by server frequently down i have upload my doc to this url: http://www.geocities.com/luqeckr/doc2.zip i hope this will do... it really give me a headache i also think to convert it to wordprocessor format but it also give me a pain... i've been happy using LyX for a while, but this error really get me into trouble.. maybe it something to do with the float on a section (4.4) just right before the last chapter, ... if i delete those float (graphics/table) then the errors gone... but the document isn't finished without the floats. :( On 8/11/05, Ekkehart Schlicht <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hi, > > I tried yesterday and to-day to download your > example - without success. wrap in LyX-code
I am using LyX 1.3.5 on a Mac with OS 10.3.9 I was wondering if there is a way to do line wrap in the LyX code format. I am writing a manual that uses the R language, and I have a lot of lines in the code that I would like to wrap, rather than add a hard return and begin a new line. I checked the User Guide and Extended features, but found nothing. Any suggestions or points-in-the-right-direction? cheers, Hank Dr. Martin Henry H. That did it! I think you and Samar have done it! thank you! I use fancy in the menu, and then ERT \fancyhead{} %Clears header fields \cfoot{Project Description - \thepage} At the beginning of the references I use ERT \setcounter{page}{1} \cfoot{References Cited - \thepage} I can then cut the Refs off in Adobe Acrobat (I guess my next step is to do it in ghostscript...?) NSF proposals
Hi Folks, I am trying to submit an NSF proposal via Fastlane. This is my first attempt using LyX. I am about to give up. The deadline is a week away, and I have the following problems: 1. I need to add descriptive page numbers (e.g., Project Description p.1 or C-1). 2. I cannot separate my references cited (using BibTeX) from the document, so I have to open it in Acrobat and delete, the body of the proposal, but then I am stuck with screwy page numbers. There may be other problems, but those are the ones that currently confront me. I have investigated fancyhdr but I don't known what to do with it. Thanks for ANY advice. Hank Dr. Martin Henry H. Since the iBook is becoming my primary system, I'd like to know whether this template is being dropped or that there are other reasons for it being unavailable. Regards, Walter --

Figures and rendering
Greets: New to lyx and just testing a few things out. Specificaly how lyx handles linuxdocs with graphics. The problem that I have run into is that my version does not seem to be able to handle conversion of figures (images). While they appear inline ( as png, jpg, jpeg or ps) they do not render when viewed with DVI or HTML. To test this I used the docbook example file, docbook_article.lyx and tried to view it with HTML. No images, Next I exported it to pdf, no images. Hmm so I guess I must be missing some dependencies that are part of the image processing engine for lyx. Reviewing the listed dependencies I have all those installed. Version of lyx is lyx-1.3.4-1suse82and90.i386.rpm System is SuSe8.2 Reinstalling and viewing the output gives the following: -- lyx ## Configuring LyX for your system... checking for a LaTeX2e program... Re: Paragraph indent problem
Yes, thanks for your help. It was a general comment, not about your suggestion. It looks to me like Lyx is going down the wrong path. The gui should represent the _logical_ structure of the document, not attempt to be wysiwyg. Paragraph "handles" and menu options that operate on all paragraphs would be welcome. This is prompting me to think about returning to auctex mode. T. On Mon, 2004-05-03 at 02:32, Helge Hafting wrote: > Timothy H.
