See www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/5957. Well, yesterday we found out that this bug is back in Qt4.5.2, so I withdraw my advice to update Qt.. (for now), but LyX 1.6.4 has a work-around for this. Vincent

On my tiny bug demonstrator document, I used Vim to change lyxscale 50 to lyxscale 51, after which the file became stable in LyX. Interestingly enough, when I set it back to 50, it was still stable. So there's some kind of cache involved. When I reboot (for power savings I shut down every night), I'll see whether the 50 reverts to being unstable. At this point, for me, by far the easiest way to deal with this (I won't call it a solution) is to make sure no graphics are scaled 50% within the LyX environment. That's a whole lot simpler and less risky than tampering with my Qt4 version. Later, when I upgrade to Ubuntu K, qt4 will be upgraded for me. Thanks SteveT

Re: LyX crash feedback
Hi, I'm just in the process of setting up my new computer with Windows XP. I installed the latest MikTex and LyX, opened my first file which I created in version 1.6.0, scrolled down, and it crashed in exactly the way you describe. Three eps figures were causing me problems, and it turns out that they had all been scaled to 50%. All three were the same size at 1009x756 pixels, in landscape orientation. Scaling to 49 or 51 % does not cause the crash. I can email you one of the files if you like. As an aside, every time I save the preferences, the maximized LyX window shrinks to the previously unmaximized size, but the border remains unsizable. I have to click restore and then maximize to get back to using the full screen. While I have your attention, I am still at a loss why I can't get a response from the lyx ftp server. If any of you have any ideas to offer in response to my query several days ago I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks! The main things to remember are to watch the upgrade to make sure it it only upgrades qt4 related packages, and disable the Karmic repository after you use it (so you don't accidentally upgrade to Karmic next time you do updates). Thanks. When time permits, I'll upgrade one of my two Ubuntu machines and, assuming the results are stable, move on to the other. Although I move at a pace nearly as glacial as the Ubuntu repository maintainers ... :-)

I myself had instances of this in 1.6.2 and 1.6.3, and was lucky enough to find a workaround in 1.6.3. Turns out, the lyx file causing the crash in my 1.6.3 featured a huge (bigger than 2mb) .eps file. When the file loaded, the picture on the screen said "loading bookcover.eps", and then a couple seconds later crashed. This was a reproducible error -- it happened every time in the same amount of time. Using Vim, I replaced bookcover.eps with bookcover.pdf, a much smaller file, and the problem disappeared. So here's my question for everyone reporting 1.6.x crashes: Did your files include graphics? Did they include large graphics? Were any of the large graphics .eps files? Was there anybody suffering a 1.6.x crash whose file DID NOT have graphic files? I'm not sure that *all* crashes on Ubuntu are related to Qt and graphics. I've had a couple of crashes lately working on a document whose only images are generated by xypic (so the images are external TeX files that are added to the doc by LyX input commands, with instant preview off). The most recent one, at least, occurred when I cursored out of a math inset and then immediately changed my mind and tried to reenter it via the left arrow key. (I might have deleted a character along the way; don't recall for sure.) I suppose that could still be a Qt issue, since Qt handles the LyX GUI itself. Personally, I'm just going to live with it until the updated Qt version finds its way into some repository as a .deb package. Fortunately, I deal with short documents, so restart/reload is not too painful. /Paul

I've used much larger eps graphics which didn't show your problem (on Windows). Another problem on Linux is that KDE people created an eps plugin for Qt; this enables to visualize the eps graphics directly within LyX without any conversion to png. But this plugin has often been buggy and crashy in my experience. You can see if this plugin is used at the console output of LyX. Abdel.

Steve, A lot of the crashes that were reported actually came from people that were using Ubuntu 9.04. The problem was that Ubuntu was shipped with Qt4.5.0, which had a number of bugs (at least in combination with LyX that is). I know you don't want to fiddle around with your fresh new installation, but if you still have Qt4.5.0, I'd advice you to upgrade to Qt4.5.2. LyX crash feedback
Hi all, In the last 6 months this list has featured at least 10 reports of LyX 1.6.x terminating unexpectedly. If there's anyone currently able to reproduce this problem, would you be able to use a text editor to whittle the file down to a small reproducer, and then use the text editor to toggle the symptom by enabling and disapbling the big graphic?
