Re: Scanning & ocr options?

2023-08-07 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
Actually, it would be interesting to know whether you could use an
iPhone or iPad as the camera.

All of the documents I need to process are PDF files anyway, except for
what arrives in the mail, and I use an iPhone for that.

To answer the question, I would expect both scanners and cameras to be
supported.

Hi all, I don’t know much about full scanning OCR options. I was
just reading a bit about pearl and open book from Jaws. Does the Mac
have solutions like that? One main thing I want is the ability to
know if my reading material is right side up. I also like the idea

This probably isn’t a spelling error in the PDF file at all. The most likely
cause is that the “fi” ligature is being used in the typeset text, and the PDF
isn’t properly accessible, so your screen reader isn’t
Receiving the correct characters, even though both “f” and “I” are present in
the text as shown on screen or printed.
You could convert the PDF file to text and then edit, I suppose. Editing the
original PDF wouldn’t help, as it’s most likely correct as is.

Re: Comments/corrections accepted on my answer to a question about writing AT scripts and accessible apps for MacOS

2023-07-13 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
Note that, at least in my experience, Mac OS applications have a greater
tendency to use the operating system-provided user interface widgets
than is the case in other operating systems, thus the screen reader
accessibility tends to come by default. Of course, Apple's accessibility
API is documented and should be used appropriately. There are also
accessibility testing features in Apple's development tools, as
discussed at WWDC this year - presentation available online.

I should qualify my statements here: my technicl knowledge, such as it
is, lies more in Linux than in Mac OS or Windows. I prefer UNIX-like
operating systems in general.

On 13/7/23 09:41, Doug Lee wrote:

I received an inquiry this morning asking about writing assistive technology
scripts and/or more accessible
apps for MacOS. I wrote the following rather involved response, as more of an
expert in Windows than in Mac
spaces; so I welcome corrections or comments here, and told my contact I would
do so.

=

I actually consider your question to amount to two questions:
1. Is it harder to write AT scripts under MacOS than on Windows? and
2. Is it harder to write an accessible app on MacOS than on Windows?

I do consider it much harder to do assistive technology (AT) scripting for Mac
than for Windows, but the
reasons are complicated and subject to inaccuracy because that's not my area of
best expertise. That said,
I'll tell you what I can. Same for the second question, which I'll tackle after
the first.

1. AT scripting on MacOS vs Windows:

On Windows, AT scripting is accomplished within each screen reader, where it is
possible anyway:
* For JAWS, it's JAWS scripting.
* For NVDA, it's add-ons in Python.
* For Narrator, I don't know of anything possible yet - though I was told years
ago this would happen.
The ease of learning how to do AT scripting, then, depends on the screen
reader. NVDA and JAWS vary in how
and how much they document how to do this, but both do provide significant
documentation.

There is sort of an alternative to all that, which is making individual apps
"self-voicing." RS Games and
QC, an alternative gaming platform, are examples of this. In general this is
often frowned upon though,
because it leaves all the major interface choices to the AT developer more than
to the individual user.

On MacOS, we mostly just have one screen reader - VoiceOver. For specific
spaces, there are alternatives;
example, YASR or TDSR for terminal windows. I'll gloss past those for
simplicity now though, because they
are only meant to cover the unique challenges of terminal interaction.

Apple does appear to provide some tools/interfaces that could be used for AT
scripting. There's the
Accessible Events system, which has a switch that you must turn on if you want
apps to have such permission
if I recall correctly. There are APIs in the Apple libs for accessibility,
though I've never known much
about them. I once saw a fascinating project proving this much though: A "file
system" made out of
accessibility information, where you could cd to a control in a running app and
write to a file to press
buttons etc. (This used the Fuse layer, if you've heard of that.) But unless I
missed something,
documentation of such interfaces has never been particularly easy to find.

So the biggest reason I say it seems harder to do AT scripting on MacOS is that
it seems much harder to
figure out what can be done and how to do it. My second reason is that I
suspect, but can't yet prove, that
less is actually possible at least without doing things that Apple does not
want non-Apple folks to do.

But I have a third reason: I suspect, but again can't currently prove, that the
availability of such options
is, on MacOS as it is on Windows, going to depend on the specific app of
interest. I further suspect that,
on MacOS, there will be less available in the best of circumstances for an AT
developer than on Windows. It
is hard to know what can be done if nobody knows how to try, so I expect there
is far less testing of the
possibilities on MacOS than on Windows at this time. Take Qt apps for example:
TeamTalk, TeamSpeak, and
probably other apps' developers have sometimes worked with the developers of
the Qt framework to improve the
accessibility of apps developed using that framework on Windows; but I hear
zero chatter out there about
MacOS app developers working with Qt framework devs to improve framework-level
accessibility for Macs. Again
this is mostly speculation, but reasoned I think.

2. Accessible app writing on MacOS vs Windows:

There is one actual advantage of the merkiness of AT scripting on MacOS I
suppose: End users are, for the
most part, required to work with app developers, not AT folk, to get problems
fixed. Between this and the
uniformity of the MacOS environment, owing of course to its "walled garden"
nature, any results tend to be
universal and not limited to specific circumstances, such as which

An advantage of this, however, is that it avoids conflicts between keys

don't have to deal with pass-through commands very often.

Of course, as others have noted in this discussion, you can use capslock
as the VoiceOver modifier (this is now the default, if I remember
rightly), as well as Quick Nav. You can enable additional keystrokes for
Quick Nav that expand the navigation commands available in VoiceOver,
for example in Web browsers.

I think that Mac OS is usable with VoiceOver. Because people say that
accessibility on Mac OS with VoiceOver is worse and worse.

I haven't noticed a decline, and I've been using it since 2014.

The introduction of applications ported from iOS has complicated the
user interface somewhat, at least with VoiceOver, but they tend to be
fairly accessible - at least for Apple-provided software.

I think there's considerable room for improvement that may come
gradually as older code in the system is superseded.

Safari has a reputation for not having implemented Web standards to the
same extent as Chromium-based browsers and Mozilla, so I'm not surprised
there are issues with some modern Web sites. This isn't an accessibility
problem specifically, as far as I know.

Re: When It Comes to iPhone, Are You All Thumbs?

2023-01-18 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
On the phone, I generally use dictation to enter text messages, or sometimes
the touch screen. I could also use a braille display for text entry, but I tend
to use my braille display with my computers rather than with the phone.
At home, I often simply open the Messages app on the Mac and type the text
there, instead of using the phone itself.

It very much depends on what you want to do. Perhaps a visit to
applevis.com and a look at their reviews of Mac apps would be in order.

Also, it is possible to install applications from outside the Mac App
Store, if needed.

Finally, ensuring that you're familiar with the applications included in
Mac OS by default would be a good idea, in case they already provide
most of what you need.

How do one transfer apps from Ipad to the Mac so I can try using them on my Mac?

There's a category for them in the Mac App Store. You need to download
the iOS/iPadOS applications from there. This is all well covered in
published articles that you can find via your preferred Web search engine.

You can set the system volume to be appropriate for media listening,
then reduce the VoiceOver volume to less than 100%.

Re: Not Responding Message

2022-12-22 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
I forgot to add that I've rarely encountered this issue on my 14-inch

pages loading and other reasonable causes). If it were happening to me,
I'd be lodging the support case.

Try visiting applevis.com, where you'll find thread upon thread of
complaints about "not responding" (previously "busy") problems with

The best you can do is probably lodge a support case with Apple.

Try using Ctrl-Option-F7 to obtain the time and date. This is new in Mac OS

There's a "live text" feature that can transcribe from any audio playing
on the device.

I don't know how accessible it is from VoiceOver or whether the
transcripts can be saved anywhere.

Re: First Character Recognition in Lists

2022-12-09 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries

Write a bug report. Maybe Apple will fix it.

On 9/12/22 23:02, Bill Gallik wrote:

I’m having an issue navigating a list wherein I want to move into the list by
typing the first character of list items so as to quickly move down into that
part of said list. As I’ve mentioned in prior e-mailings, I have a number of
“signature tags” that I’ve created from “Quote of the Day” in prior days and
now “Brainy Quotes.” I save each daily quote in a text file in a dedicated
folder and then create the signature tag matching that file name. I’m inclined
to keep these signature tags in alphabetical order so when I create such a tag
that begins with a letter later in alphabetical order I’d like to be able to
enter the list of signature names and enter the first letter so I’ll be placed
in that region of the list. That is not working consistently.

For example, the “Second Mouse” tag below is a bit down the list; yet if I
wanted to create a tag such as “Wisdom Outweighs,” simply typing a “w” upon
entering the signature list often does nothing at all. The aggravating aspect
of this is that SOMETIMES it works. And to top it off, when I am in a folder
and trying to locate a file in this manner it does work all the time.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Whether it monitors the microphone for the “wake words” is configurable in

Windows and to not use your PC as a crutch when you're frustrated with the Mac.
They were great words and I took them to heart. I think that's why I'm very

In addition to what others have suggested, there’s documentation available with
Ctrl-Option-Question mark (i.e., the VoiceOver modifier key with question mark).
I don’t know why this is so, but discussions on this list and elsewhere give me
the impression that Windows users have a more difficult time learning VoiceOver
for Mac than do people coming from other backgrounds.

If you're looking for version history, then it's discussed in this article:

According to the article, you can obtain a list of prior versions of a
file, and restore any of them. I don't use TextEdit, so I can't comment
in detail. So far as I know, it doesn't allow you to display the
differences between revisions of a file, however.

If you're referring to a permission dialogue for the recording, you
should be able to grant or decline permission. If the dialogue doesn't
gain focus automatically, you should be able to switch windows or use
the VoiceOver application list to bring focus there.

Also, there is a keyboard command (Command-Shift-A) for mute/unmute that
should work anywhere in the Zoom application.

If you install HomeBrew, you can easily install Rsync from there.

However, ssh and scp are available on most modern Linux, Mac OS and

I suspect this is a consequence of how Microsoft Outlook is presenting

Try opening it in any text editor, turning off braille translation for your

It’s probably a bug. Find out what was updated most recently (Microsoft Office

It is my understanding, which may be mistaken, that the new door detection

detection.
I have an iPhone XS, and the reasons for upgrading are accumulating, but they
are not yet compelling. For those in the U.S. and China, prices have reportedly
been held the same as those of last year’s models, but prices have been
increased in other markets. I would not be surprised if the price increases
were to reach the U.S. and China with next year’s devices, though that of

seems to be a problem for Bluetooth generally. Find out how many devices

I have Bose noise cancelling headphones, and switching them between
different connected devices has always been problematic. It's supposed
to happen automatically

Also, if you're using Bluetooth headphones with a screen reader, latency
can slow down your work. Apple devices seem somewhat better in this
respect, perhaps due to their support for the AAC audio codec via
Bluetooth. Microsoft Windows is considerably worse, at least for my
headphones. Linux performs remarkably well though (but there's still the
problem of connecting multiple devices, as mentioned).

So, be aware of latency issues if you plan to use such headphones with
VoiceOver.

An alternative would be a two-column table.
Note that in most word processors, you can start a new line without creating a

I think so. Any client software you use it with should report an error

It is my understanding that you can format storage devices from the shell

You should be able to look up the command syntax on the Web, then run
Terminal and carefully use a command to reformat the device.

Re: iOS Apps on Ma

2022-06-29 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
My assumption is that it’s relatively easy for Apple to develop versions of
relevant iOS libraries that can run on Apple Silicon. With those in place, the
applications can be executed, as both iOS and Mac OS running on Apple Silicon
are thus using the same 64-bit ARM architecture. Given that they’re leaving
behind the x86 architecture, Apple’s developers aren’t about to write the ARM
emulator for x86 that would enable iOS apps to run on an Intel-based Mac. To do
that, they would need to translate the ARM instructions to x86 instructions.

I am personally feeling that some time with either textedit, or pages,

I want to be so solid with my typing that entering my password without

using the menu bar, if that is an option?
I will want to know as well how to keep certain programs I use often

I am used to just typing whatever starts the program, I never used

Yes, the terminal is treated as just another application so far as VoiceOver is
concerned.

It’s a feature of the shell that completes partially typed commands and file
names. For example, if you had a directory named “documents” and you typed
“do”, then pressed the tab key, it would complete the rest of the name -
assuming that there are no other names beginning with “do”. Typically, pressing
the tab key twice gives you a list of names that match.

Re: Working around MS Word

2022-06-22 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
Recent versions have improved somewhat in their accessibility.
Make sure you’re using the latest Office 365, monthly channel, for the best
that Microsoft Word for Mac currently offers to the VoiceOver user. Old
versions are definitely problematic.

 Hi,

I think that you might be running on old information about Microsoft Word.
It is very accessible on the Mac now. But, if you do want to move docs
back-and-forth between word, and an app, Pages is very accessible, and can
import and export to Microsoft Word easily.

Re: Voice Dream Reader for mac and Braille display

2022-06-20 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
If you can read them with VoiceOver on the Mac, then, yes, you should be able
to use your braille display for the purpose.
Be aware, however, that the panning behavior on VoiceOver for Mac with a
braille display can be awkward, and it may be challenging to read a document
sequentially.

If you interact with the "table" that contains the list of messages, you
should be able to read through them efficiently with up/down cursor
keys, and, if I recall correctly, left/right to expand/collapse threads.
This assumes you're using Apple Mail.

If you're using Microsoft Outlook for Mac, this aspect of operation is
similar.

Re: onboard tutorial revisited.

Also, the user’s guide can be reached with Ctrl-Option-Question mark.
Apple announced that there would be new voice options in Mac OS Ventura. I
don’t know whether any of those might be more intelligible for your purposes.

Re: Accessing notifications

2022-06-12 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
Yes, that’s also as I remember it.
The one situation that poses difficulties for me in Monterey is answering an
incoming Facetime call when the Mac is locked. It’s hard to reach the
notification in time after using touch ID to unlock the device. I don’t
remember whether I tried VO-N in that situation.

Subject: Re: Accessing notifications
Hi,

It may have depended on the specific notification. Those persistent ones that
remain on the screen may have often been given automatic focus by VO, I can’t
recall. I do recall though that it was slightly different in Big Sur. I
actually prefer the Monterey style of doing things with notifications, but of
course, that’s a personal preference.

Actually, if there is an on screen notification, you should be able to place
