She is getting a bit more rusty than I had wanted, so figure I should
just strip her and haul her off for a coat of paint. Lot of little
things, like changing out the front and rear window (seals, chrome
glass), as well as getting new door seals, fresh side view mirror,
silver vent cover instead of the painted one, real antenna instead of
the hanger and bunged up fender hole. The pitted front and stone
chipped hood want loving too. Might as well fix the hole in rockers
before paint. At some previous date there was clear coat put on some
panels, that needs to be dealt with.

I figure I get all the shiny bits off, I do not need the maaco boys to
waste time with masking tape, just paint it all, and I can put the
goodies back. I am sort of peeved that a little mutant snot kid ripped
the driver door trim back. Now I need to source some.

99% of the time a blown headgsket will evident itself by water in the oil
and/or oil in the water.

Remember, this thing is shrowded in mystery because the breakdwon occurred

possibly someone was allowed to drive it who had little sense (girlfried,

improper repairs? I don't have much faith in the previous owner.

The other scenario would be its being run out of oil and driven dry of
 oil.
The thing was using oil shockingly fast when I drove it around, but I have
since been told that if the car sits for a long period (it sat for around
 a
year), it often consumes oil for a while when it is first driven again.
Also, I was told that if one fills the oil up to the full mark (which I
 did
repeatedly), it will burn it down fast.

A small bit of evidence in favor of the blown head gasket is the coolant
level being significantlly low (it wasn't when I was using it). I know,
 inconclusive, but still evidence.

So, Marshall/others, what would be the indicators of a blown head gasket?

What would be the indicators of siezing due to lack of oil?

Some have suggested a broken timing chain. Wouldn't this be a sudden
 seizing? This siezing wasn't sudden.

A blown head gasket (relatively rare) is almost always replaced with the
engine in the car. Usually/often the timing chain is replaced as well
 (unless it's relatively new).

Why do you think the head gasket is blown??? A blown head gasket WON'T
usually cause an engine to seize unless you allow it to run until the
engine to overheat excessively - and if you do that, a LOT more than the
head gasket will need to be replaced before the engine will run again.

It was almost certain to have been run out of oil. These things will
use/leak some oil and whoever was driving it without permission probably
didnt check it.

Thats not very good evidence.

So, Marshall/others, what would be the indicators of a blown head gasket?

If the engine is really siezed it would only because by

A: Ran out of oil and it locked up

B: Threw a rod and got stuck

C: Timing chain broke and it got stuck.

You could pull the oil pan and tell real quick whats going on if it was
run out of oil or if it threw a rod. Pull the valve cover to see if the
timing chain is broke. My money is still on they ran it out of oil.
Seen it many times.

Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Since we do not have anything
resembling good data from the climate prior to the last ice ages it would be pure
speculation to say we are on the edge of a new ice age, but there is more evidence
than that.

I suspect that during the first millenium after Christ, there was in fact an open Arctic ocean. Remember, Greenland was famable in those days (instead of having glaciers down to the water in all those souther valleys) and was heavily colonized by the Danes. There was much more rainfall in the Mediteranean, especially on the southern side, and the Sahara desert was much smaller. Arabia also had much more rainfall.

During Roman times, the middle east was completely deforested, and aquired the
climate it has today (semidesert to desert). How much of that was human
activity and how much was changing climate is impossible to tell, but I would
bet deforestation had something to do with it. Ditto for global warming -- no
one seems to want to discuss deforestation, but it has huge effects on
rainfall and lower level storm activity.

Anyway, there was a distinct little ice age in Europe in the 1500-1800 period -- Boston harbor froze shut, the Thames froze solid some years running in the winter (remember, southern England is semi-tropical today -- Plymouth within half a mile of the coast is frost-free, palm trees and all).

I have wondered what would happen if the Arctic and Antarctic oceans warmed up. Typically, the
very cold water from the ice sheets drops below the warmer salt ocean water and forms the deep
return stream for the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic. In recent years, the meltwater is
warm enough that it is less dense than the saline ocean water, and there is more of it, and it
does not sink, rather remaining on the surface. This cold slug of mineral depeleted
water has had a large impact on the cod fishery, compounding the serious overfishing that was
going on. The combination resulted in the collapse of the cod fishery.

I have a feeling that loss of icecap may very well result in a re-arrangment
of the ocean currents in the Altantic (and probably Pacific as well) -- I
wonder what Europe will look like if the Gulf Stream goes across the Atlantic
and down Africa instead of up the US coast and over to England?

As I tried to point out to my Ecology classes, climate is a metastable system. It will
always be be a closed system. but the actuall flows of water and wind can
take any number of self-reenforcing patterns. Land climates will be quite different if
the water patterns are different.

Another side note -- the short grass prarie (is in Oklahoma/Nebraska) used to
extend all the way into central Ohio

silver vent cover instead of the painted one, real antenna instead of

I figure I get all the shiny bits off, I do not need the maaco boys to

Good question. The thing was smoking (could mostly see it in the
headlights of cars following at night). It wasn't black-ish smoke. And
it didn't seem blue-ish like burning oil, nor was there a burnt-oil
smell, or any oil collected in the tailpipe.

The smoke is normal

Remember, this thing is shrowded in mystery because the breakdwon
occurred while I was not around and someone else put a bunch of miles on
it - possibly someone was allowed to drive it who had little sense
(girlfried, drinking buddy? - the truth is hard to come by someitmes).
Or it could be that there was a problem with the engine when be bought
it. The kid we got it from claimed his dad replaced the engine before
his death. But with 120k on the clock, I don't see why. Maybe he put in
a crap engine? Or did improper repairs? I don't have much faith in the
 previous owner.

The other scenario would be its being run out of oil and driven dry of
oil. The thing was using oil shockingly fast when I drove it around, but
I have since been told that if the car sits for a long period (it sat
for around a year), it often consumes oil for a while when it is first
driven again. Also, I was told that if one fills the oil up to the full
mark (which I did repeatedly), it will burn it down fast.

It was almost certain to have been run out of oil. These things will
use/leak some oil and whoever was driving it without permission probably
didnt check it.

A small bit of evidence in favor of the blown head gasket is the coolant
level being significantlly low (it wasn't when I was using it). I know,
 inconclusive, but still evidence.

Thats not very good evidence.

So, Marshall/others, what would be the indicators of a blown head
gasket?

What would be the indicators of siezing due to lack of oil?

If the engine is really siezed it would only because by

A: Ran out of oil and it locked up

B: Threw a rod and got stuck

C: Timing chain broke and it got stuck.

You could pull the oil pan and tell real quick whats going on if it was
run out of oil or if it threw a rod. Pull the valve cover to see if the
timing chain is broke. My money is still on they ran it out of oil.
Seen it many times.

Some have suggested a broken timing chain. Wouldn't this be a sudden
 seizing? This siezing wasn't sudden.

If that's the case, (typically speaking) is the engine in need of an
overhaul, or can the cylinder(s) affected be repaired in-car? I'm
assuming coolant in the cylinder and perhaps some pitting?

A blown head gasket (relatively rare) is almost always replaced with
the

engine in the car. Usually/often the timing chain is replaced as well
 (unless it's relatively new).

Why do you think the head gasket is blown??? A blown head gasket WON'T
usually cause an engine to seize unless you allow it to run until the
engine to overheat excessively - and if you do that, a LOT more than
the

head gasket will need to be replaced before the engine will run again.

[MBZ] Storing for Winter

2005-11-24 Thread John Peterson

I bet there are lots of good opinions on this one- but here goes.

What is the best procedure for storing a diesel?

Will the tires develop flat spots if I leave it parked 3 months in the
garage this winter?
Should I take the battery into the warm house or leave it in the cold garage
with a trickle charger.
I bought a $130 Noah fabric MB cover at the dealer- considering the
beautiful fit and the fabric used, it is a real bargain. I will cover the
car in the garage because I always seem to hit the car with something.

Thanks for the advice- this is my first storage of a car.

[MBZ] 240D Head Gasket

2005-11-24 Thread frederick w moir

Greetings and Salutations.
FWIW, my 81 VW dasher diesel hydro-locked one day when I had taken my kids
back to their mother. Went out to go back home, engine would not turn. Took
out a glow plug and cleared the cylinder and drove slowly home. New Head
gasket and klatta klatta klatta.

Re: [MBZ] Short term storage

2005-11-24 Thread mykd1
If you are worried about flat spots you can also lift your car up a few inches
and put blocks under it to take the weight off the tires and wheel bearings. Or
you can completely remove the tires and store them. Since its not really long
term storage it won't hurt to just park it and keep it covered. This is what I
do, so its suggestion only. Of course a oil change is recommended as well as a
full gas tank and a additive to keep moisture out of your fuel system.

What is the best procedure for storing a diesel?

Just change the oil before putting it away.

Will the tires develop flat spots if I leave it parked 3 months in the
garage this winter?

Probably. Ten miles of driving will normalize them.

Should I take the battery into the warm house or leave it in the cold
garage with a trickle charger.

Not a trickle charger unless you want to kill the battery. Use a battery
maintainer.

[MBZ] odometer skipping

2005-11-24 Thread Jerry Herrman
This evening as I drove off in my 82 240D, I heard for the first time a
periodic clicking type sound coming from the instrument cluster. In checking,
I found that the trip odometer wasn't turning. I'm guessing some gear wheel is
not engaged properly with whatever it is supposed to turn. What is the action
to take to correct this? Am I further damaging it by continuing to drive?
Should I disconnect the speedometer cable to avoid further damage? I cut short
my trip and went directly back home, so I don't know if this is affecting the
main odometer. Looking for a solution. Thanks in advance.

that I keep the car. I laughed at her offer and told her to start with
$1,500 and we would have a serious conversation. She immediately said If
you will settle for $1,500 we can settle today. I picked up my check an

[MBZ] OT - Britain's best paper airplane = Spruce Moose

2005-11-24 Thread OK Don
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1649274,00.html

A simple but ingenious paper dart was named Britain's best yesterday
after wafting through a Victorian university hall for almost seven
seconds.

Silently proving at least five laws of physics, the Spruce Moose would
have glided a fair bit further, had it not collided with a No Smoking
sign on one flight and a spectator's shoulder bag on another.

Try pushing the trip to zero a few times. If this does not bring her back
will have to remove and overhaul. Not a hard job. There are some DIY links
on how to do it (I do not have them handy but have seen them) or you can
send to Overseas Speedometer and for about $50-$70 hey can do it plus
shipping.

This evening as I drove off in my 82 240D, I heard for the first time a
periodic clicking type sound coming from the instrument cluster. In
checking, I found that the trip odometer wasn't turning. I'm guessing
some gear wheel is not engaged properly with whatever it is supposed to
turn. What is the action to take to correct this? Am I further damaging
it by continuing to drive? Should I disconnect the speedometer cable to
avoid further damage? I cut short my trip and went directly back home, so
I don't know if this is affecting the main odometer. Looking for a
solution. Thanks in advance.

[MBZ] Thanks and an OT insurance question

2005-11-24 Thread Ron Dwelle
I also say Thanks to everyone on the list. And I have an insurance
question (boat not car).

I've never made an insurance claim in my life. But my sailboat (in
storage at a boatyard for the winter) blew over in a windstorm 10 days
ago and sustained considerable damage. My insurance company and the
boatyard's insurance are currently arguing over who's responsible.

I'm expecting to get an offer from one of them for damages. I'm pretty
sure it won't be totalled. I'm estimating that the damage will cost
about $15K to fix and the boat is worth maybe $25K to $30K.

My feeling is that I would prefer NOT to repair it, since I probably
wouldn't trust the boat in harsh conditions and we've been thinking of
changing boats anyway.

So, what kind of offer am I likely to get? What are my options when I

Push the reset button in and let it snap back out, this usually clears it.

This happens once in a while on my 300D, doesn't seem to cause any trouble
other than that the trip odometer doesn't record.

If the odometer starts to slip (not record milage) but doesn't make any noises,
it's time to glue the zinc drive gear back on -- this will eventually happen, I
believe, to all VDO odometers someday. Easy fix, seems permanent.

Do NOT reset the odometer while the car is moving, this will evetually cause
the zinc gear to start slipping.

2005-11-24 Thread l02turner
Kaleb said:one of these days Im going to learn and attempt a paint job

Hi Kaleb,
I had the same idea. Take a look at my 1st paint job -
http://members.rennlist.com/my_911/Index.htm to see what I went thru.
Mostly it's a matter of sanding - and sanding - and more sanding. lol
The actual paint spraying is relatively quick - but as you no doubt suspect,
the preparation is the part that paint shops charge the big $$'s for. I
ended up spending almost 18 months doing this - but I'm disabled and could
only work on low-pain-level days - probably 2 or 3 per week. And I didn't
always want to play with the 911 on those days.. If I were to work at it 3
or 4 hours per day, 4 or 5 days per week, I could finish it in 3-4 months.

And BTW, putting all that stuff *back* on the car was time consuming because
I'd see a flaw on a part and decide it needed work or replacement.

If you get to the point that you want to take a whack at it feel free to ask
any questions you might have --
and I'm sure there are many others on the list with much more experience
than I who could be more helpful.

The Brits aways did DESIGN some of the best airframes in the world.

Getting them built and into use was another story alltogether. Most
egregious examples were during the Labor government in the 50s -- some
rather good designs crippled by bureacratic meddling and stupid engine
designs form the same bureacrats.

Perfect examples:

JetLiner

Avro Arrow

Barabazon long distance design.

#1: Don't let them get the idea that you don't want the boat.
#2: Don't settle for an estimate and attempt to take the money and do the
repairs with it under your direction. There can be a lot of hidden issues.
Best way is to have the insurance people contract a boat yard to fix it to
your satisfaction and pay them.
I did it the #2 Don't way when my motorboat got run into at the dock and
got screwed big time.

do get the offer.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, as I don't want to walk into this
deal blind.

Thanks again,

Ron Dwelle

Ron - I only know what my experience has been with attempting not to fix on
an insurance claim - others on the list are no doubt more knowledgeable of
such things. The company will assume that you are fixing the boat, and want
to make sure you use 'their money' to make the boat valuable once more.
Thus some [all?] companies make the check out to the repair shop that is
approved to do the work. Being in a similar situation with a car I no
longer wanted I worked out a deal with a friend who had a relationship with
a repair shop so that he took the vehicle 'as is' [to repair it himself] and
the shop endorsed the check with me paying the tax on the shop charge.
Friend go a repairable car for a cheap price [subtracting the insurance
amount from the price, the insurance company was no longer insuring the car
so it's insurability did not matter, and other than the tax bill I got the
repair $ and the rest of the price of the car. Not certain if it followed
the letter of the law, but it cost no one more than they would have paid.

A most happy thanksgiving to all, and for the assistance when needed. I can
not do the work any longer, but I know what the situation is a whole lot
better when I talk to the mechanics.

I had my share of blown headgaskets. Since Brian does not know when and how
whatever happened, one sure way to tell if it is the gasket is to look at
the oil and the coolant. If the gasket went, there will be oil in the
coolant (scum in the reservoir)and/or water in the oil (milky looking scum
on the dipstick).

Oooo, I get to disagree with Marshall...

When I had my 300TD with a blown headgasket if I left the pressure cap in

with water and the engine wouldn't crank. We just drove without the presure
cap on tight. Got away with that for months before I got Hammie.

How about removing the glowplugs and then attempt to rotate the crank. That
will tell you instantly if it is truly a hydrostatic lock situation. Also it
