Re: [MBZ] Starter/Alternator/Battery Problem 240D
Do the battery test with a voltmeter but it may also be a dead spot on the starter commutator. Sometimes the brushes get stuck and don't make good contact with the commutator. Sometimes it's an actual dead or dirty spot on the commutator. If the battery tests good, try wacking the starter with a board or hammer and then try to crank. 18 to 24 of 1/2 hard copper tubing works well for whacking the solenoid and also for jumping it. I always carry that and a 2' long screwdriver for both duties. Re: [MBZ] TDI update
How many AU (1 AU, aviation unit, = $1000) did all that take? Sounds like you're almost there. Our TDI averaged 50.5 mpg for the two round trips to the airport this morning, 32 miles each way, almost half at 70 mph and the other half at 60 mph. Why two trips you ask? - the FAA melt down on the East coast this morning is why. On Sat, Aug 15, 2015 at 3:32 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Picked up my 2005 Golf TDI from the TDI mechanic today. He put in a new transmission and timing belt/water pump, changed the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, and polished the headlights. He said the clutch in it looked like it maybe had 10,000 miles on it plus it has nearly new tires which leads me to theorize that after putting a new clutch and tires into it the previous owner freaked when the transmission gave trouble and considering it needs new front fenders and a windshield refused to put any more money into it. So its quite drive-able now but I don't think will pass inspection because of a ding in the windshield. Safelite says its probably repairable, I'll make a run up there and see what they can do. Then I'll see about front fenders and getting it detailed. We washed it but it had some gunk on it which will probably have to be buffed out. I think the previous owner had babied it, when I first got it up to highway speed it was kind of pokey and the first couple times I really got on it it poured smoke. After a couple hard run ups its feeling a lot peppier so I think I got the carbon out of it but a week or two of highway runs will prove that out. Oh and the speedo doesn't work. I'd bet the mechanic hasn't hooked it up. I didn't have plates on it so I bet he didn't take it for a ride. I'll look online and see if its something simple to hook back up, otherwise it'll be back to him for a checkup... -Curt -- OK Don NSA: The only branch of government that actually listens to US citizens! *“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.”* – Mark Twain There are three kinds of men: The ones that learns by reading. The garage is much cleaner now, and I found a few other things I was looking for, but the lock is MIA. I decided that with the limited amount of time I had left, I could at least clean off the front of the engine and positively identify the leak. After I removed the cooling fan and shroud, I used brake cleaner to clean around the crankshaft and the vacuum pump and the front of the engine in general. Ran the car for about ten minutes, observed and felt around the front, and could find no leaks. Hmmm. Started the car again, and cleaned off more of the oily mess on the left side of the engine (injection pump side) and immediately found a steady drip drip drip. Shut off the engine and started looking and feeling for what could be the source under the injection pump, and touched one of the three injection pump flange nuts and found it finger tight! Ah hah! I just had time to torque the three bolts to spec (20-25 Nm) and run the engine a bit. That is not really a fair test, so tomorrow I'm going to take the car to the car wash and clean off the engine properly, and see if the leak was just the injection pump all along. Hard to imagine that all the oil was migrating forward from the injection pump flange, I'm still suspicious of the crankshaft seal. - Max Charleston SC ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT streetlights in the country
We live in a suburban/semi-rural area, where small farms are being converted to new developments all the time. We have a street light on the perimeter of our property that is paid for by the county electrical utility (publicly owned). Initially, when the bulb died we were grateful that the light pollution was gone, but crime in the area (mostly vehicle prowls) prompted us to reconsider. A call to the utility got the light repaired the next day. We also have a motion sensor light nearer to the house. Problem is when you go outside at night it's lite up like, well, a street light. It comes on at dark and turns off at light. I'm thinking about calling them and telling them to turn it off. The stars would be brilliant without it and it is annoying when trying to watch the meteor shower. So anybody know of any major reason that all farms seem to have these? Re: [MBZ] WTB: crankshaft hub
SDL I got had been in some shop in arkieland. german name etc, presumably knew something about german cars. The IP had apparently been replaced by one that had been sprayed with a gold lacquer for identity. It leaked like a seive at the flange. When I finally took it out and put in a new oring, I found the pump was way out of time. The pump was already leaking at the delivery valve orings shortly after I got the car, so the rebuilt pump is somewhat suspect too. There is a post somewhere in these here archives about the pump oring, leaking and way out of time. So yes, a bad oring and a loose nut or 3 on the IP flange can result in big oil puddles. The solenoid is entirely out of the circuit until the key is turned, so it's unlikely it's the cause of the phantom discharge. Unless the click-no-crank is because the battery is dead. An easy check is turn on an interior light. It should dim - but not practically go out. If it goes out, the battery has insufficient current capacity. Re: [MBZ] Mower head gasket update
We've also got a quarter acre. I cut it with a 1965 Snapper 308X rear engine rider that my great uncle Paris bought in 1967. It'd been owned by a golf course before that, they traded it in, the equipment shop re-powered it and he used it until he died in 1989. After his death it got pushed under a spruce tree on the farm until I retrieved it in 2008. I re-powered it with an engine from an '88 Snapper rear engine rider in 2009 and have cut the grass with it ever since. Its even still got one original 1965 tire on it. Probably needs a new blade and rubber drive whatsis but otherwise its great. -Curt From: Max Dillon via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Cc: Max Dillon dillonm...@gmail.com Sent: Saturday, August 15, 2015 12:39 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Mower head gasket update Nice! [MBZ] TDI update
Picked up my 2005 Golf TDI from the TDI mechanic today. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
