Yup, headed up to Keene this morning to get a new windershield in the Golf. The window guy also discovered that polishing compound takes off the goo that coats the front half of the car. It comes off super easy which is good news, I was going to pay to have the car detailed but for an hour of work I can fix it myself.I've got a 12pm meeting after which I plan to head to the registry and get the car legal, then inspection and with luck it'll be ready for daily driving. Still experiencing some effects from carbon buildup in the engine, the turbo is variable vane and it hunts a bit but seems to be settling down. I'd like to take it to the airport on Sunday when I fly out, the ride back from the airport has a couple good carbon blasting hills... -Curt From: WILTON via Mercedes To: Mercedes Discussion List Cc: WILTON Sent: Wednesday, August 19, 2015 10:32 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] ? Considering that I own the cars, it’s not really for them to worry about. The proceeds of the scrapped S500 that they wrecked is offsetting the cost of the replacement car. Barely. But every little bit helps. Youngest son is driving me crazy with his attention to detail and nitpicking. Last night it was, “The car took a couple of extra seconds to start!” Since it had been sitting overnight, I suspect the fuel pressure had to build up. The other day it was, “There’s this strange brown stuff on the carpet under the driver’s seat!” No doubt from someone spilling a coffee and doing a crappy job cleaning it up. When was the last time you looked under your driver’s seat? He’s a MarthaManiac. I’m so proud. Thank goodness, he’s much better than his older brother, who just drives the car and doesn’t pay much attention to anything as far as the car is concerned. Good thing I keep maintenance records and get reminders, or nothing would ever get done with his car. The shop next to my CrossFit gym has had a 98 E320 diesel sitting in the parking lot for about 3 years. Every so often, I talk with the shop in order to find out what the status of the repair is. He always tells me the lady is trying to get money together. So today I stopped in to ask him how it was going and he told me that the lady has finally just brought him the title. He told me he's ready to sell it to me and he'd like to get $1500 for it as it sits. He said that when it was brought in three years ago, it wasn't running well and it had a fuel leak out of the back of the injector pump. It's a 98 with 273K miles on it according to the title. I'd like to have the engine, but not for another 6-12 months... If it cannot be driven, you have no idea what it is worth other than the scrap weight. Suspension, air conditioning, transmission, differential, engine; all are suspect and could be bad, not to mention brakes, radiator, tires, battery. Also, this engine is notorious for glow plugs breaking off in the head, requiring head removal to fix in some cases. The mechanic is dreaming if he thinks he can get more than $500, unless he can get it running well enough that you can test drive it. - Max Charleston SC ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Starter/Alternator/Battery Problem 240D
Remember there are 2 ways to short the starter. One is across the posts of the starter itself. This will make the starter spin but I guess on an MB will not make it engage. The other is to short from the hot lead on the solenoid to the start lead on the solenoid. This is what you'd do with a remote starter switch and is mimicking what the key switch does when you start the car. 50 amp charge shouldn't affect anything other than the battery. The battery becomes a sink for the extra power. Its still only 12v, well probably 14 something but lets not be like that. ;) -Curt From: Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes To: 'Mercedes Discussion List' Cc: Greg Fiorentino Sent: Monday, August 17, 2015 9:38 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Starter/Alternator/Battery Problem 240D Thanks for all your thoughts. Re: [MBZ] Replacing Cruise Control Amp, 1983 300SD, W-126
That's an easy R/R - remove the driver's side kick panel and it's located near the pedal assembly. You'll need a 10mm and maybe two other simple tools, IIRC. Don't mess around - buy a rebuilt amp from Programa in FL. Their price is fair and the rebuilt units (with core exchange) last and last... They also buy cores. http://programainc.com/ On Tue, Aug 18, 2015 at 5:07 PM, Tom Harruff via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Does anyone have the job sheet for replacing the cruise control amp on my > 1983 300SD. So this thing has been sitting there with nothing done to it for 3 years, it has cost him nothing and he wants $1500? Dreamer. The owner could have unloaded it for $1500 if he thinks he could get that, instead of giving it away to him. Or maybe he has some deal with her, he gets a percentage or something? Buy it for cheap as a beater, if nothing else you could find another engine or tranny if the body is good and those are trashed, or just fix it and have a cheap car you could flip if you got it running. --R On 8/19/15 1:01 PM, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: Sitting unused for 3 years is not a good thing. All the woodpeckers I'm familiar with hammer for two reasons - to eat and to "sing". When eating, most use a rather slow thump, thump, thump - maybe 1-3 blows-per-second and a seemingly random delay between blows. I never hear them do this on anything but wood. When signaling, they seem to like noise. Hollow tree, metal flashing, etc. And the rate is way higher, like 10-20 blows-per-second. It can almost be described as a buzz. For this, it seems the noisier he better. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] Golf speedo
I think I mentioned the other day that the speedo didn't work in my new 2005 Golf TDI. Today I managed to get the car registered so I took a minute to dig into the issue. Theres a vehicle speed sensor (VSS) that lives on the differential which can cause my problem which is no speedo and a randomly bouncy fuel gauge so I went looking for it. I'd spent a little time before but its tucked on the rear of the transmission which is right in front of the driver's seat (transverse engine remember) and behind the air filter. Theres not much space in there so I pulled the airbox (2 bolts and a nut although one bolt is missing) to get a better look. I finally found the wiring for the VSS but no VSS. I did find a thing that looks a little like a transmission fluid dipstick. I *think* its actually the bottom half of the VSS. The sensor is $25 so I just ordered one. IDParts (my favorite VW supplier) is in MA so I usually get my orders from them double quick. While I was at it I got a hinge repair kit for the armrest, a known weak point some enthusiast has designed an updated part which is supposed to be way stronger. On a positive note the state says my car is worth $5500 vs the KBB value of around $3500. That makes me feel good since I've already put double what I paid for it into repairs and I haven't dealt with the front fenders or bumper cover yet. Once I do the car will be pretty much perfect though. Re: [MBZ] Golf speedo
How many miles do those cars last? I was under the impression that about 200k miles was the typical life for a V-dub. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Golf speedo
My '98 is over 260,000 and going strong. If the tin worm wasn't taking it it'd go forever. The preTDI engines were not known for their toughness but the TDIs regularly go over 400,000 with no special effort. The power of the TDI engines means they're not always pushes right to the limit like the idi engines were. That makes me feel good since I've already put double what I paid for it into repairs and I haven't dealt with the front fenders or bumper cover yet. Once I do the car will be pretty much perfect though.
