That's a very good idea, but you wouldn't have to make little parachutes. Just tie helium balloons to their bellies and let them float away. They'll drift for miles and you'll know how far when you start hearing reports of tiny alien invaders. Another solution would be baby pythons from the Everglades. They have enormous appetites and will follow mice wherever they go. When they get too big, you can ship then to Andrew where they can feed on the rabbits. As the days get shorter and the temperatures start to drop into the 80s, the thought of getting back out on the sporting clays range starts to surface. The youngest boy and I have been talking about it recently, which made me realize I need to start seriously looking for a good over/under 12GA shotgun. In my previous searches I really, really like the Lanbers, especially the 2097 30” barrel, but since they stopped selling in the US they’re getting hard to find, new or used. I’ll continue to watch for them, but in the meantime... For those of you who are shotgun people, I would be interested in hearing your suggestions for a beginner sporting clay shotgun. I would lie to keep the price below $1000, and yes, I know I’m not going to get a Browning or something really nice for that kind of money. Re: [MBZ] OT (?) Mice eating the wiring
For mice, I have a five gallon metal kerosene can. The dregs of a keg of beer get installed in the lower portion of the can, about eight inches. Mice will try to get in to enjoy the beer. Rat size hole at the top, slick side, deep enough that only the rats can touch bottom. Mice lose hope and become rat food while the rat pickles in the beer. Slugs drop in as well. Feral cats who stalk my chickens find the pointy end of a .177 pellet injected into their hind end. Low pumps so not fatal, just painful. Applied enough times, the cat learns to avoid my place. Squirrels are too stupid to catch on quickly, so end up on a crows dinner table. clay On Sep 1, 2015, at 3:54 PM, OK Don via Mercedes wrote: > I read on one site that they live trapped the mice, spray painted them, > then dumped then over a mile away. Re: [MBZ] OT (?) Mice eating the wiring
Now this sounds promising - "Mouse Trap Powered By Electric Fence Charger " ""You can catch mice with very little expense and no poison. All you need is an electric fence charger," says inventor Keith Lamb of Gruver, Texas. According to Lamb, a single 12-volt or 110-volt fence charger can be used to operate any number of traps over an entire farm and can even be used inside vehicles such as combines, tractors, pickups, and motorhomes. "On my farm I have two traps inside my shop, one inside my pickup, and another one inside my motorhome. All the traps are hooked up to an electric fence that surrounds my pasture. " What makes the idea work so well, says Lamb, is that fence chargers operate at high voltage -- 3,000 to 9,000 depending on the model -- which is more than enough to kill most mice. If the mouse doesn't die right away it will be stunned and fall into water at the bottom of his traps and immediately drown. And though they operate at high voltage, electric fence chargers draw very little amperage. "Fence chargers barely use up enough electricity to change your meter reading," notes Lamb. His patent pending traps are made from 2 1/2-gal. chemical jugs cut down to 8 in. high. A 2-in. high hole is cut into each end of the container, about 6 in. off the bottom. A ramp -- made out of cardboard, wood or even rocks -- leads up to each hole. He then pop rivets a pair of 1-in. wide metal straps inside the container. One strap runs lengthwise about 3 in. above the bottom of the container, while the other strap runs across and about 5 in. above it. A ground wire leads from the bottom strap to the fence charger. The positive wire is attached to a small metal screen enclosure that contains the bait and hangs about 3 in. below the top strap. Water fills the container to a depth of 1 or 2 in. The mouse enters the trap on the cardboard "ramp" and then follows the grounded strap to the bait. As it reaches for the bait, the mouse contacts the screen, gets electrocuted, and falls into the water. "It's a simple idea but it works fantastic," says Lamb. "I've caught as many as 22 mice in a single trap in one night. I've caught more than 400 mice since I installed my first trap last year. The container can be any shape or size. I've used 1 gal. anti-freeze jugs and 5-gal. pails. "The mouse usually gets electrocuted before it ever touches the bait, so the bait always stays fresh. You never have to reset the trap. The only maintenance is to remove the mice from the water. I think it's a practical idea even if you don't have livestock and have no need for an electric fence charger. You can buy a battery-operated charger for cheap. Or you can install a 110-volt model and use it to operate traps inside your buildings, then run a wire from the buildings to your vehicles outside." Lamb runs wires all over his farmstead, elevating it up over the driveway on poles so it's out of the way. "I put an antiseptic in the water, such as lysol or household ammonia, to kill any bacteria carried by the mouse, and to keep the mouse from smelling for several days. During the winter you can put antifreeze in the water." Lamb has already sold more than 100 traps in his local area. He's now looking for a manufacturer and is also designing a trap for rats." - See more at: http://www.farmshow.com/view_articles.php?a_id=317#sthash.WIfqEZAz.dpuf -- OK Don NSA: The only branch of government that actually listens to US citizens! *“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.”* – Mark Twain "There are three kinds of men: The ones that learns by reading. I did change the SLS relatively recently and it has been clear. I'll re-check the clarity of the remaining fluid in the SLS fill canister. If it's still clear and not sooty then it's likely that the faulty flex hose itself had deteriorated to the point of contaminating the SLS fluid locally. Failing SLS accumulators (spheres) will NOT cause the oil to turn black. I have seen no evidence for or against engine oil causing accumulator or hose damage. With a failing pump seal, I have only seen SLS oil leak into the engine - not engine oil leak into the pump. That's because the shaft is on the high-pressure side of the pump - not the input/suction side. The fluid get dark with age and use. And if you have a hose that's dead, I could see that maybe the deterioration of the hose causing the fluid to get dark. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT (?) Mice eating the wiring
I had a different problem this year. The rustbucket SDL has been parked for the summer. Behind the driver's side headlight, around the A/C pressure switch/drier there was a bunch of grass and mud. No mouse nest, but it looked like something bigger had slept there. My second though was packrat, but AFIK, no 4 legged pack rats around here. (only 2 legged) Pack rats build much bigger nests than this one was. In the flint hills of KS, that is a different story, but none around here that I know of. There are groundhogs though. My suspicion is that a ground hog put the mud and grass there in the spring and then baked itself in the warmth under the black hood parked next to south and west facing building sided that blocked the wind and reflected the afternoon sun. The critter had big teeth, as it bit through the LF TS wires, and chewed insulation off other wires and cut some other wires down in that corner. I doubt the AC will ever run, so I didn't fix those. I had to splice and insulate several other wires. I've never heard of groundhogs sleeping in a car before. I always get the oddball things. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

This is the time of year to start trappin the meeces. They'll be wanting to get inside as the cold weather comes on, reducing the population pressure outside reduces their need to get inside. I've been very successful trapping chipmunks this year and have accidentally (incidentally?) caught a couple mice while I was at it. I'm going to try the peppermint oil trick this year. Supposedly you cut it 50/50 with water and spray all around the foundation of the house... For the snowmobiles I have yogurt cups with mothballs in the footwells, keeps the mice out good. Re: [MBZ] '85 123 vacuum system
Hi there, do you have a first name? Your first bet that he's incompetent is he says 20psi. PSI is a pressure measurement, vacuum is measured in inches of mercury. The steps are dead simple, find the first T after the pump (on the front of the engine) and cap it. Pull a vacuum on the engine side and see if it holds, if not theres a problem in the pump or the line, fix that. If that holds move to the next junction. Cover everything under the hood first, then move to the driver's footwell and track throughout the car. Some idiot says on that web page that alloy wheels were incorrect on a W11 coupe. Hogwash! The factory data card for my 9/69 280SEC 3.5 listed alloys as an option, and they look very correct. Re: [MBZ] '85 123 vacuum system
Yeah what they said. First is to put your mity-vac (HF sells a version for cheap but a "real" one is not that much anyway) on a hose near the brake booster where some branch off, and see if you are actually getting vacuum from the vac pump. The diaphragms tear in them over time and vacuum gradually decreases. Or it could be bad/cracked lines or tees up there under the hood, I ended up bodging some brass barbs and tees into the system by the brake booster because the plastic things were all brittle. Lines crack and leak too. From that set of branches you can start testing what is leaking if the pump is sucking right, could be the brake booster diaphragm or anything in the door lock system. You can stick a pencil or a golf tee in those lines at the main tee there by the brake booster and see if that restores your brakes and shutoff, in which case you can leave the line going to the doors disconnected and at least have brakes and shutoff until you resolve the issue further downstream. If you don't want to fool with it for now, get about 6 ft of vac line and run it to the shutoff then the other end into the cabin where you can get it, suck on it to shut off the car. You still won't have brakes but that will alleviate the shutoff process. I have a writeup with pics on changing the vac pump diaphragm, it is not particularly hard just a bit fiddly. --R On 9/1/15 12:20 PM, Rick Knoble via Mercedes wrote: RA writes: I am losing confidence in his >ability to properly troubleshoot and repair the >system. Re: [MBZ] '85 123 vacuum system
This is all of maybe 10-15 minutes worth of diagnostics with a MityVac. It's vacuum, not pressure, so I'm confused why they would reference a positive pressure. If you have access to a MityVac and some time, let me know and I can outline the steps. It's stupidly simple once you know how. Wagons with roof racks are nice for hauling junk. Of course you could build a rear bumper rack on a SLC to extend the usefulness of a roofrack for same. Or you could make a bumper to bumper roof rack... (ugly but useful for hauling ladders, lumber, etc.) I finally found the w115 racer a new home. She will sacrifice her OM617 to a jeep, and probably be stripped and crushed. Sold it to a fellow out of left field who seemed like a flake CL response. Told me in email he was going to buy it and would i be home today. Yeah, sure, I will be here... (thinking I will waste the whole day and he never shows). Called that he was late and may not arrive until around dark. Sinking feeling sets in, but he tells me he has cash on the phone. Fellow drives up in a minivan with a uhaul dolly. Looks at the car, asks about the scrap alternator and starter to be tossed in, gives me cash once I light her off, and we put it on the dolly. He drives off into the long settled sun. I go to the computer and begin the prowl for my next victim. Something simple, but big enough to haul hardware about. Gump was great for that. OR the SLC. It has a large trunk, I do not care about the roof getting scuffed. clay 2002 s430 - Victor, a Stately & well tailored chap 1974 450sl - Frosch - Two tone green 1976 300D - Blei Vanst - it looks silvery 1972 220D - Gump - She was green, simple and ran 1995 E300D - Gave her life to save me against a Dame in a SUV POS 1987 SDL - Beware Nigerian Scammers ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
