Re: [MBZ] ACC madness
On thursday I gave thanks for the existence of 30 watt pencil-tip soldering guns. I decided to tackle the loathsome ACC units in both my 123 and 124. Pulled the PBU from both and proceeded to do the touch-and-go on each circuit board. When it was over, the 123 performed flawlessly, while my 124 returned to its usual routine of Excellent! I've had (eventual) good luck in getting the VDO ACC's to work again. I'm really quite fond of them. Once they work. obstinately refusing to send vacuum to the footwell pod. The 123 had obvious signs of cold solder joints, but the 124 unit had a sticker claiming it was rebuilt, so I couldn't find too many outward signs of problems on the circuit board. I touched up a few joints just to say I did, plugging it in and crossing my fingers--nothing to be thankful for. Sometimes I've needed more than one 'treatment', and a good contact cleaning of the switches is part of it. Does anyone know if the 7 port vacuum manifold is the same between diesels and gassers, or between and amongst all the years of the 124 (and 201 or later 126) series? Anyone got a spare lying around? If I I'm sure that any of the things that can be made to fit physically will function well. I'd think they'd tend to be the same part, but of course I have no proof. can't easily fix this on the cheap, I might just wire in a spare overboost solenoid or other electro-mechanical vacuum solenoid to send vacuum to that infernal footwell pod in all circumstances except full defrost. You _are_ sure that the pod works, and doesn't have a microscopic leak? The footwell pod gets a vacuum restrictor in its line, so it is the most sensitive to the beginnings of a diaphragm tear. I can't remember if you've proven the system out already. (No leaks, voltage as req'd to the vacuum valve.) -- Jim

Re: [MBZ] come on, nobody wants these?
When I worked for the truck rental agency, some construction guys ran over a racoon on the way into a site, did not think anything more about it. Truck then sat for five days in 95 deg temps. When they went to get into it again, let's just say it had to be towed in. Turned out the front half of Rocky (complete head was looking back at us when we pulled the wheel off) had lodged in the front area of the inner wheel well and had sort of rotted and baked. Truck stayed out of service for four days while we sprayed everything we could think of in there, a few times a day. Finally it was *just* fit to rent out, but on damp days it still had a stench like skunk until we got rid of it. Blowby is blowby, so removing an oil cap on any engine should give you a cursory review of the relative level of blowby gases present in the crankcase at a given time. A friend of ours owns Chicago steel (the iron company, not the hockey team) he told me in the 50's he flew into Paris and there was a jet sitting at the hanger with a smashed cockpit roof and a missing engine. In those days you could wander over and ask folks what happens, so he did. Apparently it had hit a small aircraft on approach and sucked it's engine into the port engine which then blew up, then landed. The other competing jet aircraft of the era he wouldn't fly because it would as he said crash if it sucked in so much as a goose on takeoff. Alas I can't recall the two crafts and which where which. Yeah, the gun situation is Canada is tragic. They're making self-defense a bad word - look at New Orleans to see the govt cannot *always* take care of us. 95% of the time the police arrive *after* the criminal has committed the crime left. With all the bad press the gun gets for hurting people, the press *never* talks about the huge number of times a gun prevents or stops a crime - often with never firing a shot. It's been estimated people use guns between 700k and 3 million times per year typically just by showing the presence of a gun is enough to make the bad guys go elsewhere. The Center for Disease Control did a study and found they could not prove all the gun law did any good, Not waiting periods, not background checks - none of the Brady Bill laws - could be shown to reduce crime. But in every state where concealed carry was permitted crime went down. But the press doesn't talk about non-exciting situations - saying 4 people were gunned down gets page one - someone lifted his shirt to show he had a 9mm there and frightened off 3 gang members doesn't rate a mention - no matter how many times it happens. I'm sincerely sorry about the registration scheme in place in Canada - it was supposed to cost 2 million and now it's over a Billion when they decided to stop counting the costs. ;-\ Sadly, the removal of guns from law abiding people in Canada will cost more lives than it saves. The government has made it more and more difficult to own or acquire firearms and the result is that many people have just given up. Now we just kill deer with our cars. Had a client in this afternoon who hit one inside the city limits on Thursday evening and did quite a number on his late model Honda Civic. Good thing he was alone and did not have anyone in the passenger seat. The deer's butt took out the passenger side window totally. The right side wing mirror ended up in the back seat and the passenger front seat is covered in broken glass and deer droppings. Windshield stayed intact but is very badly cracked all over. Will need a new passenger front fender, and front door. Back passenger door can likely be repaired. All this at about 60 to 70 kph. (about 40 - 45 mph). He never saw it at all before it hit him. What might be causing this? Several points. Are the belts tight? Have you torqued the steering box to chassis bolts? They are a required maintenance item every 60kmi or so. IS steering a little stiffer? If the ball joints rust up (it DOES HAPPEN) the steering pump may groan (and steering will seem a little stiff). What model and year car do you have that doesn't do that? YOU can of course loosen the low pressure line while pouring fresh fluid into the reservoir (you DON'T want it to go dry). Went to work and it sat in the cold parking lot for about 4-5 hours. We were released early and I was anxious to get home, so naturally the 240D declined to start. Would crank and try to catch but never enough to stay running. Plugged it in and attached a battery charger - after 3 hours of trying to start it I gave up. Like yours, it had been starting and running fine, then one cold day, it would start no more. Turned out my pistons rings had gone far enough and when I disassembled the engine I found 3 pistons with broken rings. The compression test showed 0-80 psi on 3 cylinders and 185 on the 4th. I replaced everything in the engine including pistons, rings, sleeves and water oil pumps, tc, tensioner, - basically everything except the crank and block. Now, it starts instantly without the block heater in temps down to 20F - which is as cold as it's gotten around here. Odd, rule of thumb I have always gone by in this area (as told to me by an old-timer mercedes wrench) is that if they start in early to mid November, you are pretty good to go for the winter. This was like it fired up fairly easily one day, then was stone dead in the morning the next day after the temps dropped (and not by that much). I have a set of cleaned/rebuilt injectors ready to go into tomorrow. One or two are sticking and that doesn't help matters at all when they act up. I am wondering about the valve adjustment too. Other than that runs great, though I have to find where the oil leak is coming from. We're talking Exxon Valdez here. Once I do that I can put synthetic in, which it needs. So far: - tires - park/neutral switch - glow relay + glow plugs - 'fixed' hood opening problem (took a body hammer to the cowl leading edge) - shutoff diaphragm - brakes all around It will also get euro headlamps this week and I plan to switch over to steel wheels with hubcaps. I'm going to get pics up once I have the lights in, and when the roads clear up enough here so I can actually WASH the dang thing. Best used car value ever, Mike! (Knocking heavily on desk as I say that, mind.) Now I want a 300cd to keep it company. Hi BillR, Glad to hear how you enjoy the list! Sorry to hear about your heart condition - I suspect you would enjoy playing around in the engine if you were able. I'm also disabled with nerve damage in my feet legs - the symptom is extreme pain which we're trying to control with Morphine and Percocet. Anyway - speaking of Alfa's - we test drove one in 78 - a black GTV 2.5 IIRC - it's been a few years - and I still remember the wonderful exhaust note when I revved past 4000rpm. It made me wish there were a tunnel close by - we liked it but it was a little too small for our needs but we'll always remember how great it was to drive! My family has owned '82, '86, and '91 Jettas, and I have an '82 Vanagon with an '86 TD in it. Yes, the oil cap removal blowby test works. They switched from solid to hyd lifters in '86, so the '82 has solids. Of all we had, we liked the '86 the best. The earlier ones were pretty primitive and shaky, the '92 was more refined, but more cheaply built. The '86, for some reason, even though it had the same engine, was faster, quieter, got better mileage, and was more robustly constructed. Still, they're good, economical, reasonably rugged little cars. Pretty noisy on the highway, though, and really revved and screaming at 75. That's why I got rid of mine and got a 300SD. But arouind town, they're fun to drive, so long as you don't mind the leisurely acceleration, and get 40+ mpg. Watch for cracked heads--check the coolant bottle for oil residue. If they're some in there, you're due for a new head. Dan I know that at least a couple of you (dave M and Casey) are into these. I'm interested in buying a 1982 VW Jetta diesel, 210K miles, always garaged, a 2 owner car in reasonably well kept condition. Does the same oil cap removal blow by test work for these engines? Also, are these equipped with hydraulic lifters or solid ones that require adjustment every so often? Several points about cold weather and starting. If compression is low, the engine will be hard to start or may not start at all. Dave Quay who used to run Atlanta-Stuttgart (the Tiffanys of Mercedes recyclers) used to say that once compression was below about 320 psi (22 bar), an engine could not be counted on to start reliably in cold weather. As temperature drops, staring becomes more difficult as leakage around rings and valves increases. This can be due to wear, or it can be due to carbon accumulation. A badly carboned engine will NOT seal and so will start poorly (or not at all) when the temperature drops, just like an engine that worn. If the carbon can be dissolved and burned out (Mobil synthetics can usually do it in 10-20kmi) the engine will often resume starting reliably in cold weather - IF NOT TOO WORN. NO oil will reverse wear! Valves USUALLY inhibit cold starting by a slightly different mechanism. The valves and the engine head are made from metals with VERY different coefficient of expansion/contraction with temperature. As the head assembly cools, it contracts more than the valves contract so at some point, the valve starts to hang open. When intake valves are properly adjusted (0.10 mm) they will not start to hang open until temperatures approach zero (F). If temperatures below zero are anticipated, the clearance should be increased to 0.15 mm to insure that the valve(s) don't hang open. Intake valves USUALLY end up with decreased clearance as they wear (I know, that's counterintuitive). When the valve are a little too tight, there will be some temperature at which they start to hang open. That will be an almost all or none affair. At one temp the engine will start fine and at a temperature only a degree or two lower it won't. This usually doesn't present a problem until temps drop below freezing. As to the probability of it being bad, or how to test it, I really don't know. I would think that it could be bench tested with a 12V supply and a MityVac but I've never had a need to (yet). Maybe Aaron could locat a used one from Pick-n-Pull for you? As a temp fix, your theory about plumbing in a manual trigger should work fine. If it has, I would wonder about your engines starting characteristics --does the engine rev real quick when it catches, do you have your foot on the gas, etc. Some gas engine cars purge the vapor recovery canister on start up and this added fuel can add to the starting speed of the engine. Over filling the gas tank can aggravate this condition. Also, loose crankshaft bolts could make the problem you describe. I would pry gently on the ring gear, fore and aft, to see if it is loose. Finally, the starter may be loaded with crud from an engine oil leak and that is enough to slow down the bendix action when cold. Re: [MBZ] Skill testing question: 1982 240d
Hey, Mike, you explained the oil usage to me at the time and I don't doubt it's consuming its fair share in combustion, but I don't see how it can be burning what it's going through now (a quart per 2-3 days or so). The exhaust would be unreal. Now it DOES blast a lot of oil out when that one injector starts to missfire, but that phenomenon isn't unknown in older diesels and it goes away if you keep the idle high (right now I have to drive with the adjuster turned all the way up). From what I can tell it's leaking badly from where either the injection pump or the oil filter canister meets the block. It's one of those leaks that happens while you're driving, so it's harder to find. But I don't doubt I'll be checking the oil a LOT, even if/when I get this leak under control ;-). Mac [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The only reason I quit driving it was because it used nearly as much oil as it used fuelRunning my WVO blend offset the cost but eventually it just got to the point where I was sick of buying oil. Re: [MBZ] OT older VW diesels
I do believe the 82 1.6 diesel which was VW's 2nd generation diesel had hydraulic lifters and the small discs were called cam pucks. As for how many miles you can go 200,000 is conservative, its more like 300,000+ I had a 81 Rabbit and the cold start device as you mentioned were glow plugs so I would guess the 82 Jetta which had the same engine was equipped with one as well. 69 280 SEL 120,000 Miles 72 350SL 108,000 Miles 2004 VW Passat 4 Motion 1999 Mazda Miata -Original Message- From: Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sun, 27 Nov 2005 11:03:12 -0600 Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT older VW diesels The engine in the old VW Jetta will be the Volvo/Renault/VW engine -- 23:1 compression ratio, prechamber, solid lifters -- the cam runs on top of the valves directly, acting on a steel disk in the bucket on top of the valve, just like Volvo gassers. Re: [MBZ] W108 280 SEL 4.5L ignition problem
Take a test light connect to positive battery terminal, connect other end to negative terminal of coil. Crank engine if test light flashes replace coil. If not check transistor module and or pick up. Trampas -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jim Lewandowski Sent: Sunday, November 27, 2005 3:47 PM To: Peter Frederick; Mercedes mailing list; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] W108 280 SEL 4.5L ignition problem Hi, thank you both for replying to my post. Still have the problem, let me go through what I have done: The distributer was recently replaced with a rebuilt one. This distributor is not exactly like the one that was taken out, the vacuum advance module looks a bit different, smaller, but otherwise it looks the same and fits, perhaps it is from a newer model? I have 12V on the wire to the positive terminal on the coil, when it is unhooked, attached the coil loads it down to 6V. Shorting the negative coil terminal to ground and cranking the car over yields 8.7V or something in that neighborhood. This is a test suggested by Petronix, they want at least 9V out of this test, though, the car was running with the Petronix with the other distributor, and I'm assuming this voltage is the same. My suspicion has something to do with the switchbox or transistor that the original 'green' wire from the points was connected to, this terminal has 12V on it normally it seams. When I hooked the black wire from the original points set up (with new distributor) there was still no spark. BTW I have also cut the condensor wire to take it out of the system, per some other info found on line. So now with either the Petronix, or the points I get no spark. I checked the coil: .6 ohm between pos neg terminals 10k ohm between pos-coil output, and negative-coil output, so the coil seems ok I guess. It seems that I'm not getting a switch to ground or whatever to trigger the charging system to fire. I had spark and the engine was running before replacing the distributor, but the timing was jumping around at least +- 5 degrees and the car would barely pull its own weight. This was with the Petronix installed. The distributor was replaced because of huge play, in the rotor, leading to the timing jitter. Could the transistor in this switchbox be bad or just not being triggered to ground so that the charging system never fires? Given that the ballast resistors wires lead down into this area, the system may never be seeing a trigger to fire if something is messed up in this switchbox area. I'm at a loss right now and would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Jim On 11/23/05, Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jim: The Pertronix system will be much better than the original, but if you want to install the points, the black wire goes to the same place as the green one. It will serve as the trigger for the transistor switchbox to ground the coil. If you only have 6V to the coil, you have a wiring problem somewhere, you must have battery voltage at the coil, the switchbox grounds it, it doesn't supply the power. Note that on the original system (found only on the six cylinder models) the connections were different and power was pulled via the swtichbox. They are not interchangeable. I would personally go back to the Pertronix. In your house, you USUALLY are not required to run (castle doctrine) - in SOME states you are required to run. MO is very strange about this point. You can shoot people AS they are breaking your door down, but NOT once inside, unless one of the 5 above conditions exist. If they sit down to make a ham sandwich after breaking your door down with crowbars, then you just have to wait for 911...strange. Sorry - I know many of you don't want to hear about such things. During PP (personal protection) class, we did an excellent drill. Two people stand on the firing line. One person facing the target with their pistol sitting on a chair. THe second person stands next to them, but facing AWAY from the firing line. THe range officer yells GO and the person facing the target picks up the weapons and shoots...meanwhile the other person runs full speed in the other direction and STOPS when the shot is heard. THe point - you can make it 25 feet in that time frame. As a SWAT team acquantance said. If there is a man on the other side of the living room threatening you with a knife, you better shoot quick...and you might/probably still get stabbed. Suddenly, a dangerous looking man with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, raises the knife and charges. You are carrying a Glock .40 and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do? LIBERAL ANSWER: Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! Does the man look poor and oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack? Can we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing my gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Does the Glock have an appropriate safety build into it? Why am I carrying a loaded gun and what kind of message does it send to society and my children? Is it possible that he'd would be happy just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me or would he just be content to wound me? If I grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he is stabbing me? This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for a few days to try to come to a conclusion. Last week some idiot kid decided to shoot up a local mall. Had an AK and side arm. There was a fellow shopping with his family carrying concealed. Idiot drew on the shooter, but spoke, instead of pulling the trigger. He is just now getting out of ICU with probability of severe brain damage. I suspect he had that prior to the bullets hitting.
