I beg to differ -- K-Jet is MUCH better at fuel metering than a carb --
the variation in mixture as throttle varies is much less. The fact
that the injectors are placed for maximum dispersion and no intake with
fuel/air mix running through it make all the difference in the world.
No need for an acceleration pump, for instance, should tell you a lot.

CIS is much simpler than a carb, except for actual manufacture.

Temp goes right up to where it should, heat is good. Thermostat is new in the
last month. No amount of smoke to speak of. Before the termostat was replaced
the temp hung way low, no heat and clouds of smoke.
The car is from Jersey. I bought it in early December but I think it had sat
for awhile when I picked it up. I've put about a tank through it since I've had
it. I live in Central MA, its been relatively cold recently. When I first got
the car it was having this problem way worse. I put in a bottle of Diesel Kleen
which I now know is not anti-gel or water seqestering. I also filled up with
good winter fuel which probably made more of a difference. As I say even then
if it idled for 20 minutes or I drove it at what speed I could get for 10-15
miles it would clean up and drive good.

The tank is pretty empty now (380 miles since last fillup) so I plan to head
to Wal-Mart (40 more miles) get my oil and add some Diesel Suppliment then
fill'er up. Hopefully that'll grab any last water thats in there and prevent
gelling of any little bit of old fuel thats left.

Your thermostat may be stuck in the open position. Does it go up to
like 80 degrees C when idling. Where you are and where your fuel came
from can mean something too.
On a few occasions my wife filled up in Jersey and had noticeable
gelling problems up here 250 miles North.

On an engine that hasn't run in years, the results of a cold compression

I guess given enough saw blades and glue, but why?

The W123 oil pressure gauge is mechanical. To use the W126 electric oil
pressure sensor you have to change oil filter housing. Found this out trying
to put a W123 OM617 in a W126.

W126 speedometer is electric, W123 is mechanical.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 3, Issue 73

2006-02-10 Thread Curt Raymond
Followup report, 10F this morning. I glowed the 190D twice because thats what
the 240D would have required. I needn't have bothered it fired right up without
a worry. Thats with dino oil no less.

Its funny with as badly boogered as the rest of the car is the engine seems
pretty solid.

Question: my car has significant hesitation around 3000-3500rpm until its run
for 5-10 miles. I think there may be some gelled fuel or water left in the
system as after the 5-10 miles have passed it runs perfectly. I *think* the
190D has a system to warm fuel in the lines is that right? I ran a bottle of
Diesel Kleen through the system to help blow out the carbon, I'm planning on a
bottle of Diesel Suppliment to squester water and anti-gel.

So one last run to Wal-Mart tonight for the 15w50 and Diesel Suppliment.

The injection pump is a positive-displacement pump. That means it
pushes out a fixed amount of fuel, and the pressure will build to
whatever it needs to to allow that amount to flow.

The upshot is you only actually see 1800 psi if there's an injector on
the other end of the line. If the line is open the pressure will be
essentially 0 and the fuel will just trickle out.

My personal experience with open-loop fuel injection (systems without a
lambda sensor, like early CIS, D-Jet, and early L-Jet) is that it runs
better than a carb, but gives about the same fuel economy. Once you add
a lambda sensor the fuel economy benefits start to show up.

You know, I gotta say that I have long wondered if I should be using
one of these oil additives. They sound so great. (Like ProLong, Slick

which I just love - has me convinced ever time). I just wish I could
try them out on someone else's vehicle. Seems like there has to be a
catch. Sort of like switching to Mobil 1. It's like, if it was so
beneficial, why isn't everyone doing it?

Most oil additives are snake oil. Stay away from anything that claims
to contain Teflon or PTFE. (Slick 50, etc.) Think about it -- do you
really want to add solid particles to your oil? The best that could
happen is they'd all end up in the oil filter and the bottom of the pan.

The tapping noises in the CRV could be piston slap -- very common in
Hondas. If it's a sort of hollow knocking, loudest with the engine
cold, then that's probably what it is. Piston slap usually gets louder
at low RPM under load, and fades out at high RPM. It's caused by
excessive piston skirt clearance, and no additive is going to stop it.
(But the engine will still run a long time with that condition.)

If it's a lighter "tappita tappita" sound, you may need a valve
adjustment. Most Hondas have solid lifters. The valve adjustment spec
was originally every 15,000 miles, but that was amended to only when
noisy some time in the '90s. If you own a set of feeler gauges it's
actually a pretty easy job -- very similar to a valve adjustment on an
aircooled VW, except there are more valves and you don't have to lie on
the ground to get to them. ;)

I think you'd get away with calling it an E-class if it's a 300D (preferably
turbo) loaded with options - electric sliding roof, power windows and locks,
ACC, and preferably leather. My 123 had all those things (-leather) and I
called it the 1984 E-class.

If it's a 240D with manual everything, it's the baby Benz of its day.

I can see that I'm just gonna have to find a hill to use as brakes and pull
start the dang thing. I'll do that Sunday since I have a date tonight and have

Funny to think of fuel injection being an exotic, high-performance feature
worthy of special designation when there are few (maybe no?) cars being sold
with carburetors anymore!

The "Si" on the Honda Civic Si originally stood for "sequential

designation continues even though *all* Hondas now have sequential

Took a ride over to Shuler autohaus today in Fayetteville because after
seeing the LWB on ebay they were highly interested. Just stuck it on
ebay to see what it would do, was not really trying to sell it. So at
first I was looking at a 87 300SDL to take in on partial trade for it
but it reminded me too much of the famous POS SDL. Same color and
everything. Ran great and drove great though. Just the body was too
beat up and the paint was crap. He also had a 91 350SD over there. I
as scared of the engine. Really scared because it had a bad head and
they replaced it with a rebuilt #14. Seems to be a recipe for disaster.
Ended up getting all my cash back I had into the thing PLUS a 91
420SEL. Was not really in the market for a 420SEL but it seemed more
pratical of a vehicle to have around than the LWB. Its a really nice
car, interior is perfect. Just has 1 small spot of fading on the roof.
Needs shocks but other than that, runs great. Not as powerful as a
560 or course but plenty powerful enough. Im sure I will miss the LWB
but I never really drove it much, it just sat around.

Well, if each injector/cylinder supply 1/5th of the power to turn the
engine, you might expect the speed to drop by 20% or a bit more if one
didn't inject ANYTHING or didn't inject what it was supposed to, when it
was supposed to, as it was supposed to. Proper idle speed when warm
should be 750 rpm - NOT 650! It WILL be a little slower when cold!

Many older engines need to be set to 800+ rpm to prevent stalling when
cold. I don't know how much of the problem relates to the condition of
the injectors, to the condition of the injection pump or the condition
of the timing chain (and thus pump AND valve timing).

The quantity of fuel ejected from the injection line with each cycle of
the injection pump is TINY. If you agree that the engine consumes maybe
a liter an hour at idle. In an hour there are maybe 72,000 injection
pulses from a 240D idling at 600 rpm. That's 1000 ml/72,000 pulses or
about 0.01 ml with each injection pulse. Even if you double or treble
that amount, that's a TINY amount of fuel.

Replacing the door check is a very satisfying DIY job! The part is cheap,
it's easy without being actually trivially so, and results in instant
gratification if you don't f**k it up!!

Marshall,

Can a bad injector also cause extremely low idle speed (500 rpm) and
stalling at startup? With a warm engine idle is a normal 650 rpm (1983

 I could not disagree more.

Here's a good rule of thumb concerning oil additives:

Don't pour anything but motor oil into your crankcase.

Excessive oil consumption (not leaking) indicates the need for
engine
work. Nothing that comes in a can or bottle will restore your internal
engine components to acceptable tolerances. Many products do more harm
than good. Risolene removes the paint from Nissan 280 ZX oil pans and
deposits it on the oil pump screen where it resembles ZZ Top style
beard for example.

safely pull 10K lbs with a burb. I would check the codes and see if
that rear end is factory or if somebody changed it before you. I would
change to a more factory set, something like 3.73 I think, even less
probably. Not sure offhand what most of them came with. I would check
out gm-diesel.net for more info.

Cars/trucks with overdrive require gear ratios in the 4.10 range.
Gives the pulling power required and economy when cruising at higher
speeds.

Here's a good rule of thumb concerning oil additives:

Don't pour anything but motor oil into your crankcase.

Excessive oil consumption (not leaking) indicates the need for engine

Even more like autorx. In this case I suspect your oil consumption went down
because of the rise in viscosity...

Yeah I probably shouldn't write that sort of thing first thing in the morning.
I went to 2 Wal-Marts yesterday looking for Mobil 1, it had an effect on me...

The problem could be the injection pump lost it's prime. Here is a great
trick to gain prime if you don't like the hand pump...

Remove the return fuel line. Place air hose in fill neck for fuel, seal with
rag and watch fuel come out of return line. When fuel flows good, system is
primed. Works great on diesels with out hand pumps! I got a diesel Topaz
once because it would not run after owner ran out of fuel, rag and air hose
fixed it.

After system has good prime, try tow starting. If will not start check
compression and injectors and injection pump.

I thought so, all I saw last night was oozing from the lines. Maybe this
car has an injection problem, and that's why it seems to fire only once
every few seconds when it's trying to start. What's the best way to check
the injection pump?
