Ahem, I just might. I get into Amherst for various reasons a couple times a

There are two brands of after market wheels that look like the

The after market wheels I have now have the following cast into the
inside of the wheels:
MC; 0370536; 7Jx15H2; ET36; K3; and on the outside - opposite the
valve stem - KBA 12359.

I don't have a clue who made these

That was my plan. It's better to do repairs after the sale. What would
cause it to "pee all over" once the cable is removed? Is there anything
that can be done to avoid it? I know that bleeding injectors and changing

Check your coolant level -- the light will flicker or go on and off
(especially cold) if the level is just above the trigger point -- it's
just a little float.

If the level is correct, the float switch is bad -- have to drain some
coolant to replace it.

Re: [MBZ] OkieQ 2006, ****UPDATE***

Try ordering River Ale next time you're at the Pasta y Basta in Amherst,
MA. It tastes very fresh and clean - like it was brewed that morning - and
it comes in a large bottle suitable for sharing. (not that anyone who
reads this will ever get there...)

Re: [MBZ] another cheap MB W115 possibility

Hi, Jim.

I was thinking of offering the guy $300 at the most. It's gonna cost me
money to haul it outa there, or it's gonna cost me time to get it running so
that it can drive away. Hopefully, he wants it gone in a bad enough way
that he'll agree to my price. It's about 20 miles or so from me which isn't
too bad. The weather MAY get even nicer which would be good for tinkering
with the thing on site.

Re: [MBZ] More good stuff

Ok Jim, here ya go.

W124 front end stuff at low low prices.

H.D Bilsteins $109.00 each
Ball Joints $45.00 each
Engine Mounts $57.00 each
Transmission Mount $26.00
Drag Link $50.00
Tie Rod Assemblies $41.00 each
Steering Shock $22.00

These prices good through the end of March.

Hey Rusty

What about W124 front end parts?

There was a request last month for them but they never went on
"special"

And some of us have the W124 chassis

I think you are thinking of Microsoft dropping Internet Explorer for
Mac OS, since Apple came out with its own browser (Safari).

If Firefox works, then just use that on the Mac for your Ebay
functions.

The entire 201 CD is available here:

The site CAN be browser touchy and is sometimes slow, but I expect you

I'd get a new one and labor is $80/hour.

Don't know, but I lost count of the number of cars I 'smoked' off the line

I may be offering a 1977 300D for a parts car. It has been my daily driver
and has 270K miles on it. Car has many good parts and interior is is very
good shape all seats are good. Car is blue metalic with dark blue MB Tex
interior. I may grab a few parts first. Engine runs but could be #5
cylinder is acting up. Could be snapped rod, holed piston, broken
valve, etc.

I have one more test to perform via swapping injectors. If it is the
injector that is bad I will keep car. If the injector is not the cause, I
will be unloading it. Anyone interested let me know and we can work out the
details. (I do not think it is the injector). Car is driveable but would
recommend towing.

Call me if interested 814 353 1857 we can work out details.

mast

You undo the nut first, then pull gently on it as it's coming up.
It'll try to overshoot and that's what gets it the rest of the way
out. You don't just pull it out forcibly.

When installing you start it down and feed it the tail. When it stops
(not all the way in most likely) you put in the nut then cycle it up
and down again and you're done.

That's the problem - it stops and *cannot* be removed - no worry about

it's hitting some kind of stop inside - clunk!

Tried the other locks and even disconnected the battery and it would still

Pulled the #15 fuse for now, but that affects the automatic door locks, dome

antenna.

So I'll try pulling the main plugs under the passenger floor mat.

Well, that's what my Indy called it - ties into the Upper Control Arm and goes
all the way around the car to the other UCA.

Bolt may have just fallen out OR it sheared off, if the latter, then the

I recall from my college days as a ramp monkey that there are different
kinds of "asphalt" pavement but I am not sure what their characteristics
are. We had a section of the space in front of our little FBO paved
over with something that resembled asphalt but was some special mix that
would hold up to the weight of aircraft, which concentrate a lot on a
very small area of the tires and in the summer when it gets hot some of
that stuff is about as soft as taffy. There was also something that was
referred to as "tarvia" that worked as pavement too. Everyone called
this new stuff "tarmac" but I don't know if that was just airport habit
or what.

Re: [MBZ] MELT?

How about CLR - Calcium, Lime, and Rust remover.

If I recall my chemistry correctly, you want some liquid which is
acidic in nature a Ph of 7 or much less is better. This will dissolve
the metal/rust etc.. Hopefully, the rings causing the problem will
dissolve before the other metals
Cheap white vinegar, maybe drain o, lime, etc dissolves metals/rust.
Ask someone in a hardware store, they might know a better solution
It must sit for a couple of days for the chemical reaction to work, and
maybe you will have to repeat the process. Any oil is not acidic.

Re: [MBZ] *sigh*

Actually I've been pleased at how simple and straight forward most of what I've
tried to work on on this car has been. I see Mercedes Source has a manual on
how to take the center console apart but 2 minutes with the HVAC guide from
some link Marshall sent me gave me all I needed to know to take mine apart and
figure out that the chucklehead who'd owned the car before me had left one plug
unplugged in the HVAC control whatsis.
I'm really only good for relatively minor repairs but I've been making more
of them every year of ownership. I was looking back through the receipts for my
240D and found where I'd had my Indy change the fuel filters when I first got
it. I finally got the courage to do it myself last summer, I was totally
paranoid I was going to screw it up and have to bleed the injectors but
everything was fine.

Huh? I wouldn't touch a 124 or 201 without the factory service manual,
or at least the Haynes. Otherwise you could end up breaking things.

It does the same thing to Konqueror. Firefox works fine.

I thought Apple dropped support for Safari a few years ago. Did I hear

Air pressure sounds good also, keep in mind the high pressure cuz of
flying parts can injure/kill...

I was gone Friday and through the weekend so when I returned I had over

already, but I believe that the previous owner (previous to me) got the
snow tire wheels at Tire Rack and they match the factory ones (other
than the different lug bolts). I bet you could get two new Tire rack
wheels. You could then take the snow tires off the tire rack wheels and
you would have four matching wheels that have the different bolts. I
guess that would mean you would use the OEM wheels for the snow tires.

Yes, I know, short for tar macadam. So what? It's bleeding asphalt.

Just a guess: A lot of aviation terminology comes from Europe. That's

I have to say, though, that outside news reports I rarely hear

Re: [MBZ] 124 8 hole wheels

The standard 8-hole wheels (15 x 6.5) for a W124 should be pretty easy
to locate either new or used, and shouldn't be that expensive, either.
Call Potomac German Auto (PGA) for a price on used wheels, Rusty for
new OE, or try Tire Rack for new aftermarket. Caution: The 1995 wheels
are brushed aluminum finish with clearcoat, the previous (93-94 I
think?) are painted silver color. Minor difference, but noticeable if
you have one of each on the same side of the car, lol!

BTW - I'd avoid Adsit like the plague. There are a bazillion horror
stories about those clowns on most Mercedes web forums. Buy new stuff
from Rusty, and for one-stop shopping for used parts, PGA is the way
to go.

I've gotten decent used 15" wheels from Potomac German Auto for much less
than that, $50 or so plus shipping. They were the 16-hole (?) stock early
124 style. Would the 8-holers be priced much differently? (I know they're
rarer, but still...)

Did you try the other two locks? All will operate the alarm,
but for obvious reasons one of them gets a _lot_ more wear!

I think it was pure coincidence.

This, btw, is one big reason I've installed a keyless remote

Also thinking the next time a tool show comes to town I'll pick up 3 more 5

Have you tried injecting grease into the cylinder through the spark
plug
hole using a high-pressure grease gun (The air-driven ones put out
about
10,000 psig pressure.) I have heard (and seen pictures) of this method
used on old engines. You will have to make an adapter to get the zerk
fitting/spark plug connection.

than Jim's generator has existed... I've tried better living through
chemistry and time for nearly 5 years now. I've used used motor oil,
marvel oil, PB Blaster, gun scrubber, Coca Cola, kerosene and lately WD-40
because its cheap in gallon jugs. Nothing has enabled the pistons to move
one little bit.
The next two attempts involve getting an oxy acetalyne torch and/or
putting diesel in the cylinders and setting it on fire. If heat doesn't
help I'll weld (to harden) the pistons and break 'em. Replacement pistons
are well over $100 apiece but I'd like to rebuild the engine during my

Jim,
Mine is as you described-crossing the firewall and then back over the
top to the IP-pix to follow off list.

That's it, probably. Both vintages have bunches of Rube Goldberg crap
on top of the valve cover, the difference is on which side the throttle
pedal force is applied. In the older style the linkage runs along the
firewall to the right side, forward to a pivot at the exhaust manifold,
up (via a dogleg) to the valve cover, over the top, then finally down to
the IP. There's extra crap bolted here and there for cruise, idle
adjust,
stop lever, AT. This as described is the one I'm looking for, detailed
photos of the mess at the top specifically. (You can see how this is
handy for throttle-plate-equipped machines like gassers or older diesels
like the Frankenheap, where most of that linkage needn't be there.)

The newer style has the linkage run forward (as a torque rod) from the
firewall, and then is linked here and there upwards to the valve cover
for whatever reasons. I have examples of this style, no photos are
required. Thanks!

Uhh, 123 door panels pry off, 201 door panels slide up. Trust me on this one...
Also 123 door panels are plastic so you can get away with some rough
handling, 201 panels are pressboard and quite fragile I'm finding.
I was not tickled with how annoying the interior door handle was to figure
out. I should probably get the CD for this car, the Haynes manual was
moderately helpful on the 240D the other day...

Hard? Crikey, those are the EASIEST door panels I've every dealt with!
Just pry off the trim, remove the top armrest screw, unclip the latch
"bucket", remove the seat switch bits, and unscrew the lock button and
lift off. Takes me all of three minutes (needless to say, I've done a
few). Lots of broken hooks in the bottom of the doors, no one ever
looks in the manual to check, I suppose.

both of my 124 chassis cars have had door panels pried off -- had to
replace the right rear this year because the armrest pulled away.

But they were aluminum pistons, and were untouched by the corrosion.
So I was ahead by half right there. Electrolysis would be an easy

Re: [MBZ] 107 heater hoses replacement

Don -
Blower fan removal is not a big deal. A word to the wise though, do NOT try
and remove the rubber gasket or seal under the blower fan. I tried and
wished that I hadn't. I could never get a new one back correctly in place
and because of that I now get a little whistling wind noise when the blower
is on high speed. I think to get it to fit properly into place you need to
remove or at least loosen the dash assy.

Re: [MBZ] Tightness

For all its faults my 240D had a good tight steering box and handled really
well.
Watch "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" to see a great MB vs Stupid '60s
American car chase. Although the American car undoubtably has a monster engine
it handles like a pig. Of course thats an older MB, the movie came out in '69.

I had the same problem with my 78 280SE, Mercedes uses a zero offset
steering geometry and when it is new it is fastastic...as most people do
not change their fluids they do not wear well as it is alot of stress
on the components...buy a rebuilt kit and a spare box and have it
restored...then install it (best to pay somebody) and the difference is
amazing. There is also a flexi joint in the steering column which tends to
be a culprit...Best of luck

Odd fact: the threads on a grease gun mate with those on a
brake caliper. Need a way to safely remove the pucks from
a sticky caliper? Buy a cheap hand-pump greaser and put
brake fluid in it. Use a C clamp to hold in the puck
you're not working on.

Re: [MBZ] another cheap MB W115 possibility

Well, I've been going back and forth on this 220D project should I fix
it,
should I part it out? Well, I'm parting her out. However, I think I
may

I have a neighbor that's going to be putting together the Blackberry
Farm
115 I passed on to him. I'll let him know. He went with me to the
U-Pull
on spec, but found little of interest on the 123's that were there. He
did

bring home two wheels and tires, he did need a spare.

Oh, I know he wants a factory tire jack. And _I_ am still looking for
another factory wheel wrench, the one with _two_ bends in it that snaps
into the two clips in the trunk.

So, what do y'all think that this one is worth considering that my IP
can
fix the problem or that the original IP can be made to work? I really
do

Honestly I don't think any of 'em is worth very much given their
general chewed-ness by now and their propensity to rust. And an
automatic transmission is something of a liability IMHO given my
recent experiences with that 240D. Unless it was rust-free and
would shine up real nice it's probably only worth a few hundred
at most. Non-running really cuts the price, in general.

like the W115 body style, and since I don't have a lot of money to buy
one

I really like them too.

that's in top shape, I want to find one cheap enough but still worth
putting
some sweat equity into it as Jim Cathey seems to be resourceful enough
to

do.

Nit: what I _do_ and what is _worth_doing_ are two separate
propositions!

The jury is still out.

Re: [MBZ] 300SDL Alarm System

Now this morning went out to warm up the car for the wife, open the

with the master key with red dot would help.

Did you try the other two locks? All will operate the alarm,
but for obvious reasons one of them gets a _lot_ more wear!

I think it was pure coincidence.

This, btw, is one big reason I've installed a keyless remote
in our SDL. Saves wear and tear on the locks.

with the IP. The car will start up fine with some diesel in the intake, but
it either isn't delivering enough fuel to the injectors or not all of the

This one also has the added bonuses of euro headlights, an in-trunk

So, what do y'all think that this one is worth considering that my IP can
fix the problem or that the original IP can be made to work? I really do

Re: [MBZ] 124 8 hole wheels

you do know that if you buy aftermarket look a like wheels you will have
to use their special lug bolts. The factory ones will not work.

[MBZ] 300SDL Alarm System

Last night I changed a broken accelerator pedal on my 87 300SDL.
All I did was remove the two floor mats, then replaced the pedal.

Now this morning went out to warm up the car for the wife, open the
drivers side car door and the alarm starts going off, nothing I did with the
master

key with red dot would help.

Locked unlocked the car, started and shut it off, lock an unlocked the alarm
was still sounding or would start again.
Not much help reading the owners manual.

Is there a wire or switch I could have knocked off putting the floor mats
in?
I started the car after replacing the pedal an move the car and it was
fine.

Any suggesting?

Re: [MBZ] 107 heater hoses replacement

Hmmm -- perhaps. The blower fan would have to come out to get the
Dremel tool in there -- I'll take another look and see ---

I don't know why I didn't see this when you sent it.
I'll see what I can do after I tear into it in April.
I should have one extra set, but I don't know if I'll
end up using the 2.3-16 condensor or the 190D-t.

[MBZ] another cheap MB W115 possibility

Re: [MBZ] Unique odometer reading

Thats cool. Wish I had a 123 with that low of mileage :):)

I used to have one (this probably doesnt count) of my wife's old corolla
at 131313 miles. shortly thereafter it developed an allergy to the clutch
(started slipping real bad)... given its advanced stage of skin cancer, it
wasn't worth it :( (The engine was replaced at 40-45k due to a cracked
block, fwiw) (ob-rice-bash)

I have one of my E300 at 11 :)

Re: [MBZ] 107 heater hoses replacement

Don -
That is one thing I haven't had to replace yet on my '81 SL. Should be very
much the same setup as your '80 SL. I didn't go out and look at them, but
couldn't you just cut the clamps with a Dremel to get the old ones off and
then install new clamps in a more accessible location?

Barry

Tried that already - failed to even get the tip onto the screw head. I
have a couple of ratchet, 90 degree screw drivers, and couln't get
them there -- real PITA positioning.

Since tha hoses aren't ridgid yet, I might go ahead and install the
engine, and worry about them later --

Re: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Lines (more) & archives

Thanks to all who replied to my questions about replacing the oil cooler lines
on our 82 300TDt.

Bellsouth had been bouncing my mail even though the box was not nearly full --
thanks to the easy to search archives I was able to find your answers.

Finally got started but have only had a short time here and there to work on
them. The fittings were easier to break loose than I expected. (I had
started to remove the lines from a parts car and they were tough to break
loose.) Being able to get the hood straight up allows plenty of room for a
piece of pipe to lever the wrench for the initial turn.

I have the left motor mount almost off. Tjohn mentioned taking the motor
mounts off. I was thinking that only the left one needs to come off, right?

Re: [MBZ] sacrilege.... i know ...

Have to agree with Rick.

Ny best friend had a 98 740iL. At the time, he said it was the best car he's
ever had. And I had a blast driving it a couple times.

Then he had to start paying for maintenance. And a lot of electronics. He
got rid of it after a couple years.

After a break from BMW, he got a 530i he really liked, and last year got a
645Ci. But he won't keep them after the warranty expires.

Yeah, don't do it. I had an older five series that was an absolute money
pit. I have heard nothing but horror stories about the newer Bimmers, esp.
the 7 series. Resale is absolute crap on them for a reason. When I first
drove my 123 coupe, the behind the wheel similarities were scary. However,
the Benz is a MUCH better car. If you have to have an up-scale luxury ride,
buy a MB W140.
