Around here in New England 300CD's do seem to be rare. Fellow lister
John Peterson and I found one-a good 15 foot car-but had window seal
issues, trany had shift and slip issues-some of the slip may hve been
due to dragging brakes. Could be had for about 1500. It is stored in a
heated garage. Seems to be not quite pristine ecnogh for a collector and
too many mechanical questions to be a cheap dialy driver. But it is a
sweet looking car-baby blue,no visible rust from 10'. Could be a good
project though for the right owner.
Nice to be back on the list.

Hi Dwight welcome back.

I also looked at that CD but didn't drive it. Based on what Dwight

I need just the final hood reliease lever.
You know, that part that sticks out through the grill, and you pull on
it to make the final unlatch of the hood. (or if you're dring in GB - to
open the bonnet). Some young ham-fist broke the triangular part off that
lever on Old Paint. It's a real PITA to open without that piece.

Hi Gang!
Thought I'd do something simple, bzzt! wrong! I raised the
mast by
turning the radio on - loosened the securing nut and tried to pull the
mast
out. It came up another section (which wasn't being raised
automatically)
but then it stopped, clunk. I pulled pretty hard but it didn't budge.
The
replacement is a Hirschmann but the old was is not marked with the
typical H
on the antenna tip. Also, the existing antenna tip is black rubber and
the
new one is a crome button.

Any ideas? The instructions that came with the new mast (from Rusty)
are
pretty clear - and I'm sure I followed them exactly - but the mast did
*not*
want to come out.

TIA!

I also agree with your comparison-my 90 Saab 900se was much tighter than

More like: "...car used to look like"!

Anybody got (or could take) a detailed photo of the throttle linkage
mess atop the valve cover? I want to see how the extra linkage stuff I
found in the trunk fits on, so I can hook up the idle knob and cruise
actuator. This is a 79 240D, without vacuum to the tranny. It has the
around-the-engine-in- 80-days throttle linkage, a vestige of the
throttle butterfly system, rather than the ball-socket torque rod that
came later.

The brakes and wheel bearing seem to be sorted out, the car drives
fairly normally on the road now. Smelly provided a replacement front
hub (with all the trimmings).

Still a gutless pig, I worry about the continued health of bugs flying
near my rear window. My first 240D slushbox driving experience, this
must be what everybody's talking about. I think I'll stick to sticks,
myself. What a difference!

I wonder why there's a trailer hitch on this thing? Seems rather

That's it, probably. Both vintages have bunches of Rube Goldberg crap
on top of the valve cover, the difference is on which side the throttle
pedal force is applied. In the older style the linkage runs along the
firewall to the right side, forward to a pivot at the exhaust manifold,
up (via a dogleg) to the valve cover, over the top, then finally down to
the IP. There's extra crap bolted here and there for cruise, idle
adjust,
stop lever, AT. This as described is the one I'm looking for, detailed
photos of the mess at the top specifically. (You can see how this is
handy for throttle-plate-equipped machines like gassers or older diesels
like the Frankenheap, where most of that linkage needn't be there.)

The newer style has the linkage run forward (as a torque rod) from the
firewall, and then is linked here and there upwards to the valve cover
for whatever reasons. I have examples of this style, no photos are
required. Thanks!

Jim,

Don't know from practical experience, but I've talked to a local MB
private specialist in the past about certain vehicles I have been
interested in and how he felt about them. Apparently there are a couple,
several?, transmissions that do that in MB's past. They were designed to
start out in 2nd, and L/1st was only for hard pulls from stop, so the
driver would have to know that's how he wanted to start and downshift
manually (in an automatic) to get to 1st . this
*may* be how this transmission works.

In fact, at the time I thought it was so weird I googled it and found
some info on how to change that characteristic. That might be the google
I used to find this list ... odd circle of events.

ChowdaQ would be the proper spelling I believe.

I guess this as good a time as any to mention I'm thinking April 29 or

I had a Great Dane that was afflicted with it. He was over 12

The first indication was what appeared to be a pimple on his

longitudinal cracks in another leg.

One of my friend's parents spent over $36,000 keeping a

bought it another 4 1/2 miserable years of suffering and carrying it

I live in west-central Iowa. Most years (this one being very mild) that
means up to your butt in snow, sub-zero temps, and on good days lots of
ice. By "mild" I mean motorcycle weather in late February and early
March.

I have two 40 pound (I think) sandbags in my trunk, shoved as far
forward as possible. Am running Goodyear Regatta 2 tires on all four
rims.

My 240D has an advantage in bad weather, because unless I bury the
pedal, the car moves smoothly away from a stop without tire spin. Yea, I
could bury the pedal and probably slip tires but why?

I feel that a 240D with good tires was MADE for snow country.

Limited slip in my opinion is not terribly useful on ice anyway as the
two drive wheels will just hook up and spin the car in circles. My Dad
had a Chevy Tracker with a limited slip rear and in ice and snow you had
to be in 4wd because of its frightening propensity to fishtail. I never
did try it with a bunch of weight in the rear end, in retrospect that
seems like a good idea.

At any rate, my 240D even with snow tires will spin the tires on ice.
Its ICE for crying out loud...

With studded snows on all four corners there is almost NOTHING except
12+" of unplowed, unpacked snow (the car will simply sit on top with the
wheels dangling) that will stop MOST Mercedes. They will stop and steer
pretty well too. While I've never found an anti-slip rear to be
essential under bad conditions (I've never been stranded because I

[MBZ] 300D 2.5t

2006-03-09 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
Tom,
Well, comparing he 240D and the 124 300D is like my British friends
say, chalk and cheese. All of the obvious flaws of the 240D, esp. the
automatic are pretty well known. I drive my 240D 300-500 miles each
week. It is noisy, primitive in some ways, but solid and reliable. And
I love the way it looks. And I like the simplicity of manual windows,
set, etc.
The 90 on the other hand is ugly-IMHO compared to the classic lines of
the 123. It is undoubtedly the nicest car I ever drove-(I have never
driven an SD or SDL). it's refined, fast-twice the horsepower of the
240D, feels more 'modern' quieter, smoother, turbo is great and mileage
is much better than the 240D. EPA rated it 37 on the window sticker,
Nitske says 33 mpg. I haven't really checked it as I have been diving it
hard to 'tune up' the nailing. As was pointed out here earlier, the 124
handles better on curves. The 90 also has vacuum door locks. I think
the best argument for the 124 300D is the 2.5t engine-smooth, quick, and
economical.
I really had planned to get a 300CD to eventually replace the 240D-but
fellow lister John Peterson had bought this 300D and we did some work on
it-he was ready to put it on e-bay and I decided to buy it. No regrets,
but I still mostly drive the 240, at least for now. Plan to take the
300D on a road trip to NC this spring.
Anyway HTH.

2006-03-09 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
Brian,
Yes studs are illegal some places now and elsewhere legal only for a
season-here it is 11/15-4/15. They have many advantages and some
drawbacks. I used them years ago on rear wheel drive-my Chevy II. Then
as I gradually switched over to FWD and AWED, I went over to all season
radials. My 240D came with studded tires-I have driven them 4
winters-about 20k miles. The problem now is that the studs are worn
down, but there is a lot of aggressive tread left -so I feel as if I am
throwing away good tires. The main annoyance is the twice a year
switchover-I wish I had another set of wheels. I don't know the cost
factor of studs.
One of the major advantages is stopping on ice or hard packed snow. Next
winter I will use the blizzaks that someone gave me-hopefully for two
seasons. Then I will probably go back to studs. Like LT. Don, I hope to
be driving my 240D when the state of RI comes to take my license away
for old age.
Whether you have studs or not, I think with RWD in winter climes, four
aggressive snow tires are worth the investment and the hassle of change
overs. IMHO

A lot of talk about studded tires. I've never used them so let me ask:
Do they wear out very quickly on dry pavement? Or can you use them
throughout the winter - even if conditions are dry - and if so, how many
seasons do they last? I would think that the studs, if used in dry
conditions at all would go bye bye quickly.

Also: I thought I had heard that studded tires were illegal some places?

Dwight said:

Just because the points are gone off the studs doesn't mean they won't
do
the job. When the tire flexes it will allow the edges of the stud to
bite.
Actually most studded tires get very poor traction on dry and/or wet
roads
until the studs are worn down some. I'm sure the old Chevy II(My
FAVORITE
Chevy) would spin the studded tires quite easily until they were "broken

in".
I have run Blizzaks on my 62 Buick Special wagon(yeah with the 215
aluminum V8 and 3 on the tree) and they WORK GREAT!!! So good in fact
that
you will want them on the front as well so you can steer when they dig
in.
Only complaints I had were the price and the fact that they wear very
fast
on the highway. No need for studs at all with them though as the siping
and
soft compound do a very good job of gripping anything they can find.

My $.02, Mike

If you intend to put studs in used tires be prepared to pick
each
and every stud hole clean. Little stones, sand, glass chips etc will
not allow the studs to be installed properly. This can be quite time
consuming, more so if you intend to run all 4. Not cleaning out the
holes will result in problems ranging from studs falling out to
punctures. I'll never do it again unless I get mint tires for free.

$105some labor, some washers, a BOLT, and some bushings (on the
brake torsion bar). Not a creek, clank, clunk, click, or squeal. After
replacing all the ball joints and now finally securing the brake
torsion bar, she sounds JUST LIKE NEW on every bump, ramp and dip. A
beautiful thing.

Indy gave me a free Stanadyne in-line diesel fuel heater (it's new in
box, but old, he has a TON of them: auto temp sensing, heats fuel prior
to engine start). Haven't looked at the instructions - obviously goes
BEFORE fuel filter. I live in MO, not MN...but I guess it can't hurt.
Any thoughts?

I figured if there was any interest on the list and since he has
"TONS" of them, maybe we can buy a qty in builk for dirt cheap? That's
if they're worth the trouble.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the asking price of the W124 '91 300D 2.5

Turbo that I just bought was $9900 and I offered $8K which he accepted.
Bought it from a wholesaler who had this car for 44 days - I'm told they

like to move their cars more often than that - I think he was dealing
because he'd had it for a while. I'm in love with this car and only
like it
more and more - I haven't found any significant problems except for an
intermittant cold starting problem (happened 2 times in 3 weeks) which I

contribute to a lack of being driven regularily. Since filling with
fresh
fuel the problem seems to be gone (knock wood). The seller put 1/4 tank
in
before I picked it up and I'm not aware of any stations in his area that

gets a lot of diesel traffic - so the fuel may have been 'off'.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Owner Classic Certificate

2006-03-12 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
Yes-I got the badge and certificate kit-but they don't check the VIN.
After I sent mien in, I went to buy a VIN key and found that the
VIN that I used that was on the old MT title was off by a digit. So
certificate has wrong VIN number-but badge is cool anyway.

Re: [MBZ] vin cut keys

2006-03-12 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
I had one made for the 240D-just as a precaution & for a spare. It fits
the trunk fine and works the glove box. Dicey in the ignition-makes a
dragging noise I don't like. Won't work in the doors. The solution from
the stealer was to send it back along wit the current key and they would
custom cut one-I gave up for now. Current key works all. May take a wire
brush to new VIN -I used to cut keys in a hardware store with a hand
aligned jig and a wire wheel. Brian is right-plastic top is crappy-esp..
for 20+ dollars. Tempted to take current key to my local
locksmith/hardware store and have it cut.

I imagine we on the list are kinda like a small food chain/eco system
when
it comes to our broke-beyond-repair cars.
When it's broke beyond repair, we sell parts off of it (sorta like organ

donor-ing). Then, adter all the good parts are gone, we give stuff away
(sorta like vultures picking at it). Then and only then it's off to the
scrap heap (sorta like a dust to dust thing).

The latest edition of STAR has a great article on the history of all
the MB's given to the Vatican. Pope Paul VI's awesome 600 Laundalet
steals the show, of course and it now resides at the museum in
Untertürkheim. Can't wait to see it in September.

There is a great pic of Paul VI in a motorcade...his 600 followed by
about 15 identical MB's - extremely cool picture. All technical specs
of the cars in a table and the 460 Nürburg (1st given to Pope Pius XI)
is the centerfold this month.

Just before his election as Pope, Cardinal Ratzinger seemed to prefer
a W126. :-)

Read in a German Catholic newspaper that MB Italia recently donated a
very nice Feuerzeug (fire truck) to the Vatican Fire Department. Had a
nice pic of it too. Cool.

That's the sort of thing I'm talking about, though the big 'feature'
here would be using the existing dash lamp as its output device. No
cosmetic impact to the car at all, just greater functionality for the
existing light.

Curt-way to go. Fixing the seat in my 240D was the best investment I

fixed it when I got the car t instead of doing the spring padding, etc.

Took the seat apart, took the upholstry off, then put it on the new seat
base and pad.

The Mercedes Source book I bought is useless for a 201 seat,
particularly an electric seat... Might be good for a manual 115, 116 or
123. Anybody want it? I paid $12, I'll let it go for $7 shipping
included.

The electric seat appears to be alot easier to take apart, there are
only 2 screws but you MUST move the seat back to get to them if you ran
the seat forward (so you could get to the rear bolts). The book say
(paraphrasing here)"Oh just play with the wires until you find the right
ones" Fortunately I have my 110ah Marine battery in the house. The
small motorcycle starting battery I also keep in the house wasn't up to
the effort...

When is the last time you checked the bulbs on your license plate light?

That is a "reason" the cops here use to pull cars over.

Bulbs on the VW were both bad (fixed that today for eighty-three cents).
Benz and Sunbird are fine, one of two bulbs out on the Buick.

And no, I didn't get pulled over. It was just something I noticed and
fixed before I did.

Just replaced the driver's door check strap on the 190D. Relatively easy
job although theres not a whole lot of space inside the door to manuver.
Question: Was I supposed to leave the plastic sleeve on it or is that
just for shipping? I left it on though the one I pulled out didn't have
one. Nice to have some resistance when I open the door, the old one was
totally shot.
Right now I'm reglueing (again) the door skin. 2 of the hooks I'd
glued back to the pressboard had come loose. It appears that shoe goo
doesn't penetrate the pressboard at all. I used "Dr. Bond" a superglue
like substance and good old carpenter's glue this time. I also made a
replacement for one of the hooks I'd broken off. Bent a pop rivet around
into approximately the right shape and shoe gooed it into place. Its
ugly but if it works a little I'll consider it a success.

Took the 190D down to the diner for breakfast this morning, I'm
calling the seat a success, its very comfy now. Fueled up and got a
carwash. The carwash seems to have washed off some paint and bent the
antenna... I can't yet tell if the carwash was over aggressive or if the
paint on the car is weak, a bit of both I'd guess. The car does need a
little bodywork, the jackpoints have rusted and were painted so it was
hard to tell... Normally I'd fiberglass and call it good enough but I
may need those jackpoints someday.

I have been driving my new (to me) '91 300D alot and it's really a
joy
to drive. But, (there *had* to be a but), sometimes I can really feel
the
turbo as it pushes me back in the seat. Other times, it pulls strongly
but
not with the same zoom effect as at other times.

I realize the gear selected has a huge effect on acceleration but I
just
*have* to ask the question - is it possible for the turbo to operate
intermittantly? If I was more familiar with this engine I wouldn't have
to
ask - especially since given the way a turbo works, I just cannot
imagine
how it wouldn't work 100% of the time.

Am I being paranoid? I get like this when I have a new purchase -
worry
about too much until I get accustomed to things. ;-)

Howdy -
Well, I've had my new (to me) 91 300D 2.5 Turbo and still am crazy about

this car - told my wife I wouldn't mind finding another and letting my
78
240D go. ;-)

Anyway - I've used 3 bottles of Biocide (purchased from West Marine) --

added per the instructions - 2 bottles at 1/2 tank - then filled up with
the
3rd bottle added, changed the fuel prefilter and the main filter. But
sometimes - and the problem being intermittant is frustrating - when the
car
is first started after sitting for 10+ hours with temp in the 50s or
below,
it acts like it's running on 2 or 3 cylinders with white smoke from the
exhaust. If the accel pedal is held to the floor it will clear up
within 10
seconds or so - then it's ok - it takes off like a scalded dog.

WHen I changed the fuel filters, I allowed the fuel to drain into a
glass
jar to see if there was any contamination present - if there was
anything
there it was microscopic!

I thought maybe there was some water in the fuel or filters - but have
run 2
tanks of fuel thru as well as changed the filters. I use fuel bought
from
a Mobil station that gets lots of truck traffic so it's always fresh.

I'm thinking I might try some LubriMoly Diesel Purge - if ya'll think it

might help.

But I'm at a loss to understand why it runs like this. I bought a set
of
GPs but it starts *instantly* in any temperature making me thing the GPs
are
fine. Also, the GP dash light stays on for about 10 seconds when dead
cold.
Which also makes me think the GPs are ok.

Any suggestions?TIA

Consider my friend the Italian tuneup. This week I've been driving my
190D like I stole it, 45 miles each way to work and home. 4th gear and
65-80 miles an hour the whole way. Its become my mission to keep the
tachometer above 3000rpm as much as possible. Around town I find myself
staying in second with the engine roaring, people watch as I roar by.
Highway intersects are a trip, the 3500 rpm run down I 495 before
merging onto RT 2 is my favorite. It seems like the highspeed run works
to loosen the carbon and the downshift into 3rd and subsequent 4000rpm
merge onto the smaller highway expels it from the engine. I merge onto
RT 2 in a glorious cloud.

Unfortunately no one else appreciates my friend. They see the clouds
and thats all they see. They don't know that each morning my car starts
a little easier than it did just a month ago. They don't see the fuel
mileage creeping ever higher. How could they know that the engine is
quieter now than 3,000 miles ago when I bought it? All they hear is the
roar. All I hear is music.
Consider the heavily made up woman in the Honda next to me. To her a
car is mere transportation, a means to go from one place in her dull
little life to another. I consider my car a member of my family to be
cared for and cared about. I am now forever spoiled and will never again
willingly own a dull car.

[MBZ] 240D wiper question

2006-04-01 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr

I have an old problem with where wipers stop on the 79 240D. I had
posted it to this list a long time ago but no real solution emerged.
Now RI has new inspection rules for diesel cars and it failed inspection
because the wipers can't be stopped at the bottom of the arc to be out
of the line of sight. Fellow lister John Peterson and I tried changing
position of the arms today several times but to no avail-seems as if
there is a park memory that is linked to he intermittent setting.
Anyway my questions are:
Is there an adjustment on the linkage under the cowl?
Is this a relay problem?
Has anyone else BTDT?
TIA.
(good news on the inspection is that even though it is exempt from
emissions they test it anyway-out of 20ppm particulates allowed, it came
in at 5ppm.. Seems pretty clean for over 250K miles at least.)

If it parks in the same wrong place every time, I would pull the

link off the motor and put it back on with the wipers in the correct
position.

Jim,
It parks OK-i.e.. it finishes cycle after you turn it off. I think I
recall when the problem happened-tied to run wipers under heavy snow&
ice.
Should I try moving the arm as Johnny B suggested in an earlier post?
Are those grill rivets reusable?
Thanks.

The intermittent relay is also hooked into the park position, in that if
the relay is missing both intermittent and auto parking don't work. (It
was kicked and snapped off in its socket in the last SL we bought.)
That is, the switch and contact inside the motor go to the relay. If
the switch (etc.) is messed up inside the motor, of course, you know
what you'll have to do! If it parks at all and doesn't just stop where
you turn off the switch and it's not just a problem on where the wiper
arms had been installed I'd expect an internal motor problem.

Re: [MBZ] My friend the Italian Tuneup

2006-04-02 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
Brian-is yours a stick? On my automatic there are max shift marks on the
speedo-I shift mine from S-D about 45 or 50. Some would say you really
can't over rev a diesel. (My retired truck driver father always says
that.) I find that doing a Italian tune up on the 240D is relatively
easy-just run it flat out as much as you can-we don't have too many
hills here on the coast. But when I find one in MA I really lay on it.
Now my 300D turbo is another story-as Marshal said yesterday, goes to
fast to really raise heat much. After 3 1/2 years of driving the 240D it
becomes a habit to rev it as much as you can-with the automatic I drive
around town in S.

So it sounds like I'm doing well by being banshee man in the flat city.
But it would be better if I had some hills to flog on. The thing must
have LOVED our trip from AZ to MN - with the rockies and all. I spent a
lot of time floor-boarded just to try to keep as close to 60 mph as
possible.

This leads into another question I've had: On flat ground, what is the
rpm that I should shift at? As you know, I do not have a tach, so the
question becomes, how - with Italian-ness in mind - do I know when to
shift? (as I write this, I think that all those of Italian descent on
the list must be feeling pretty awesome). I imagine that the answer may
be - shift when the power stops being delivered. I just yearn for some
assurance that I'm not over-revving it.

I don't know about the 123; but for the 126 there is a confusing
procedure for properly installing the crank on the motor and the arms to
the crank. I finally got mine adjusted by abandoning the official
procedure and just using logic.

I've NEVER heard of an unmodified Mercedes diesel "burning" up from

running at permissible loads. If it's dangerous, Mercedes either
prevents it or tells you to NOT do it. All of the "melted" engines
I know of came after people defeated the systems that controlled
 power output.

I've NEVER heard of a Mercedes turbodiesel burning up from running

[MBZ] 300D 2.5 PS fluid

The steering on my 'new' 124 300D seemed stiff, at least compared to the

there should be a white plastic thingy on the center post that has marks
on it that say "Min 20," "max 20," "min 80," and "max 80" -- those are
the different fill lines for different engine temperatures (in C). I'm
99% sure you can use ATF - most people do I put the MB stuff in b/c

There is no reason not to use Dexron III w/Mercron or your
favorite
synthetic ATF. I use Amsoil and have used M 1. No problems and with
old fluid there was slight but noticeable binding or resistance that
is no longer present. Changing with Dexron yielded similar results. I

[MBZ] 240D wiper update

2006-04-22 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
First of all, thanks to all who responded a few weeks ago to my question
about the wipers parking in the middle of the field of vision so the
Green Goddess failed RI inspection. It turned out to be an easy project.
I bought some of those plastic air intake grill rivets from Rusty-I
ruined half of the old ones punching them out, so glad I had the new
ones. Once I scribed the arms on the posts, so I knew where I was
starting, I removed everything including grilles and cowl center cover.
All I had to do was remove the knurled/ribbed nut that held main arm to
the wiper motor linkage and repark it so wipers were on bottom of
windshield and then reinstall & tighten knurled nut that had slipped.
Now all I need to find is those expansion rivets that I had to punch out
of the cowl cover along the hood lip; should be fastener dept item.

And it is starting to rain here now. Time to put plastic garbage bag
over driver's door and rolled down window since I have not had time to
install the new window regulator.

Howdy -
When I was looking for a W124 diesel from Oct 05 to Feb 06 one thing
that I
noticed was the wide range of prices - this months "Star" (the MBCA club

magazine) has a perfect '91 300D 2.5T just like mine but with only 60k
miles -
http://www.mbca.org/pages/Star/ma06tp.htm for $16k in VT - while I paid
$8k
for mine with 99k miles on it.

There's also a 92 300D with 134k for $19,000 in WA - IMO, just looking
at
the ads, the 91 is just as nice at $3k less.

Feel free to browse their ads - very informative -

Auto Traders, etc will have several W124 diesels - and I *strongly*
recommend you steer your friend toward a W124 300D - especially since
it;s
his 1st MB. A gas MB can be a money pit if the wrong one is selected or
the
owner is not capable of doing much of the work himself. It's awfully
expensive having a dealer do all the work. Besides, the W124 300D is
fast,
quiet and gets 32+ mpg's - Everytime we go somewhere in mine I am amazed
at
how fast it is - it leaves virutally all other cars at the light - of
course, we're not racing Corvettes or 911s.

If he resists a diesel, find a nice 91-93 300D 2.5 Turbo close to home
and
test drive it - take it out and put your foot in it once it warms up and
he
should be impressed. Fill it up (once it's bought) and the low bill
will
make him smile! Once he's on the side of diesels ya'll can expand the
search. I was ready to travel to NJ from Va to buy a nice 92 300D with
160k
for $7600 when I found the one we bought close to home and didn;t have
to
travel.

As you might guess, I'm a *big* fan of the W124 diesel!

If the rheostat in your 240 is the same as
that
in my 1983 300TD, it is a rather crude device with a coil of fine wire
glued
into a ceramic base in semicircular form, with a wiper arm that rotates
over
the coil. The adhesive gave up in mine last year causing erratic
operation.
Once I pulled the IC, the failed adhesive spilled out in a fine white
powder. I reset the coil in silicone adhesive in the base and it has
worked
fine since.

Thanks to everybody who replied.
As I say Marshall encouraged me, but everybody else is making me
sad...
At any rate we'll see what tomorrow brings. Bob (my Indy) is a nice
guy and has always done right by me, including the 5 free alternators to
get one in my 240D that would stay running. He only once charged me
labor on a reinstalled alternator and thats when I said he'd ought to do
some troubleshooting to track down what was eating 'em, and then he only
charged me $5. I'm honestly sure he'd have just kept putting in new ones
as long as I kept bringing the car back...

Tomorrow is a new day, we'll see what happens.

I have no technical knowledge of the system - none at all. But
logically, it seems to me that the IP bears a relationship to the O ring
with
the IP exerting pressure and the O ring providing resistance. For
example, if you were to remove the O ring altogether, what would happen?
It's
obvious, isn't it? Therefore, if the O ring is all that it should be,
the problem have something to do with inadequate pressure
(underperformance) from the IP. Does that make any sense? I might be
talking out my
ass, but perhaps this may explain the direction your wrench is taking
... or possibly offer a fragment to diagnostics.

Cadillac Cimmaron -- Also a bad car

Cadillac Fleetwood Talisman - Is it lucky (or evil)?

Buick Reatta - Did they misspell regatta?

Plymouth Caravelle - just a bad name for another K car

Dodge Diplomat - Really? Have you ever seen a real Diplomat in one of
these.

Pontiac Parisienne -- I bet there aren't many of these in Paris

Bentley Azure - Is that a color?

Chevy Luv (Truck) - Insert your own hick joke here.

Pontiac Fiero - also a stupid car. Perhaps it was prophetic given the

Ford Aspire - yea it aspires to be a real car.

[MBZ] 123 window lifter

2006-05-07 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
Finally got around to fixing the driver's window lifter on the 240D
yesterday. Had been slipping with usual bad regulator symptoms for six
months or more ., but it froze up completely a couple weeks ago-wouldn't
go up or down past mid point. Turned out there was a small plastic &
rubber part (guide?) wedged between window rail and lifter tab and door
brace. Had to break the little part to free up mechanism and window.
Then I proceeded normally to install new lifter. Seems to work
fine-should I worry about the little plastic guide with rubber strip?
Can't find any mention or listing in any of the manuals, performance
products diagrams, etc. Anybody BTDT?
Thanks,

That glide is what keeps the window mechanism from rattling in the
guide,
especially when you slam the door. One was missing in the
240D-for-sale,
and I replaced it with a junkyard piece. Much better, I _hate_ such
rattles that make me think of crappy Detroit or Japanese iron. I love
the door closing sound of our MB's. Solid.

On my 300SE the Boston Vandals broke off my antennae when my kid had the
habit of turning off the power button and it remained sticking up
get this ... TWICE. I replaced it with factory antennaes the first time.
After that I put one of those antennaes with the big chrome spring at
the bottom. The broke it off again which I thought was impossible (and
hey. I don't have any enemies - at least not the kind that would break
off my car antennae when I'm sleeping.)
So after the 2nd hit, I went to a local wrench store and bought a $10
single shaft antennae (the kind with the nut on the bottom that you put
on the front fender of you pickup) - and a pair of vice grips (didn't
have any tools with me) - Went back out to the parking lot, took the
vice-grips and bent it back and forth about 500 fucking times to break
the fat part off - shaped it a little with the flat part of the vice
grips and stuck it into the goddamned hole. Oh yeah - then I thought it
might rain in the hole because the fit wasn't all that great. So I went
back in the wrench store and bought a tube of goo and squeezed it down
into the openings and smeared around it a little. Looks a little mad-max
but I don't mind. That was a year ago and the blaupunkt still receives
and plays fine. If they break off another one, I can replace it for 10
bucks (I won't have to buy another vice grips, but I'll have to buy
another tube of goo). Les Boston

When I was in graduate school (mid '70s) the machinist that did
micromachine work for me (making biologically tolerable implantable
devices and the tools to implant them) had a '51 220. It was in
excellent condition (all things considered) and was driven daily. He
took a month long trip from Pittsburgh thru the southwest to the
northwest, back across Canada and thru New England. No problems. He
decided to completely rebuild the car and disassembled it cleaning each
piece. I mean EVERYTHING - including disassembling the engine and
transmission, differential, etc. That took the better part of a year. I
stopped by his garage every now and then. Most of the car was hanging
from hooks on the walls. And they stayed there. I saw him in the mid
'90s. He said the car was still on the wall. I've lost track of him -
last time I checked he was building prototype artificial hearts.

Another of my colleagues bought a 50-52 170 or 220 (don't recall which
now) convertible in the early '80s. As he proceeded to restore it (I
don't know if he ever completed the project) he discovered that at least

some of the frame was wood!

Re: [MBZ] OT: House repair

2006-05-14 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
Curt,
Yes-you can go two ways-you can also inject it full of an epoxy that
they make for this. Real issue is to check it all the way around. Home
inspectors use an ice pick and stab it and then see the depth. Moisture
could draw powder post beetles elsewhere. How long a piece do you think
you would have to sister or replace? Is a decent size job-get an
estimate from a contractor and then subtract that from their lowest
offer. Home sales in MA & NE in general are slowing down. I treat used
house purchases like used car haggling. I wouldn’t let it scare me-I
once bought a circa 1816 house that had the sill replaced-if it's very
extensive they get the house movers in to do it. Worry with jacking is
cracking the plaster, esp. if it old original horsehair plaster.
Three car garage for extra MBZ and repairs sounds great.

Considering the other topics we hit on here
My wife and I are looking at a house, MBZ content: its got a 3 car
garage, no more paying for repairs I can do myself!
Anyway theres this one house we really like, its in our price range
and I think the seller will move on price to make it very affordable.
Yesterday we really went through with a fine toothed comb. Its an old
house so of course there are problems but theres one that sort of scares
me.
At the front of the house theres one sill beam thats rotted pretty
bad. The owners have allowed dirt to get pushed up against the house so
water has gotten against that beam. Its not broken yet but it would
definately want to be replaced. I don't *think* it would be a big deal,
its accessable from the bottom and the top, I'd figured to clean the
dirt away, jack the house just a bit to take pressure off the sill, pull
the bad and put in new but I've never actually done this sort of
thing on a house, all my experience is with camps.
Anyway anybody ever replaced rotted sills?

2006-05-14 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
Mike-
here is my post from a few weeks a go-I just fixed the return home
problem on my 240D-I think all 123's are the same. Not sure about he
intermittent part-may be in the motor, since my intermittent feature
still worked. . But if you want to check-here is how to re-park them.

"First of all, thanks to all who responded a few weeks ago to my
question about the wipers parking in the middle of the field of vision
so the Green Goddess failed RI inspection. It turned out to be an easy
project. I bought some of those plastic air intake grill rivets from
Rusty-I ruined half of the old ones punching them out, so glad I had the
new ones.
Now all I need to find is those expansion rivets that I had to punch out
of the cowl cover along the hood lip; should be fastener dept item."

Curt,

Whether it's a classic Benz or an older house, I have Two Words for you:

Professional Inspection.

If you are that serious in this house, even if you know without a doubt
you can do the repairs yourself, it is worth every penny you spend to
have an honest (can you find one?) and professional construction/repair
contractor go through the house and perform inspections. The house might
have a bad foundation, or termites, or ... or ... or carbon buildup in
the intake ... oops, slid backwards

You get the idea,

Or wiggle and shake the knob if it is anything like my 76 300D. The dash
lights only work in one spot and I sometimes have to jiggle the knob
around until I find the right spot. The rheostat feels really rough and
I think it is something I will ultimately have to change out. I am
really thinking of going the more updated route with leds and some sort
of electronic controller. I guess I'm not a purist after all.

In the past, listers have given good reports about both products. Most

well
be like mine was and has tight valves. I took a chance on mine because
it
