Re: [MBZ] OT: Thermal solar in Oz

2020-07-21 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Well a 1200lb steam plant on a US Navy ship required about 24 hours to be
brought online from stone cold, but that can be significantly shortened if you
don't let it get stone cold.  I would imagine that they would figure a way to
keep the steam side hot enough so very little time, like 30 minutes or less
world be needed.  Unlike a ship burning bunker oil, molten salt is not
producing pollution when in use, so maybe they keep the steam side at full temp
all day, but just keep the turbines off line until needed.  Bleed enough steam
through the turbines to keep them hot enough to accept a full load of steam
nearly instantly.

How low do the odds of infection need to be for you Don?
In my state, about 1 out of 200 people are infected, if I assume there are ten
people infected for every one person that tests positive.  This study says that
odds are greater than 50% that person will not be shedding viruses, but if they
are shedding viruses, then prolonged contact is probably required for infection
to occur.

Re: [MBZ] Samsung refrigerators

2020-07-12 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
We bought a Samsung side-by-side maybe 8 or 10 years ago.  Control board died
almost immediately, was replaced under warranty.  Water dispenser died a couple
years later.  Would not dispense water if the filter was installed, but would
dispense with no filter.

Ice maker died shortly after, same issue as yours: Big chunk would form in the
bottom then nothing would come out and then the plastic cracked.  I pulled it
out so we have more space in the freezer.

Other than that, the freezer and refrigerator work just fine.

Thank obamacare for that, basically tilted the playing field to favor big
hospitals, big insurance, big pharma.  Massive sellout of our doctors and

Re: [MBZ] The lack of evidence lockdowns actually worked is a world scandal

2020-07-07 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Curt, can you cite any peer reviewed study that indicates how much the risk is
reduced by the general population wearing masks?  Sure, masks (and gloves and
gowns) all work in a hospital setting to provide a good risk reduction for the
imposed cost.  Don't forget the training for those workers.  Got it, that's
fine, no argument.  I don't live in a hospital, don't work in one, please don't
cite a study about hospitals.

Let's follow the science.  Where's the study?  "Experts say" doesn't cut it
anymore, the so-called experts contradict themselves, especially on this
question of masks.

Don, I just have a simple question.  Do surgeons who are sick still continue to
perform operations, do they just put in the mask and say to themselves "This
mask will protect the patient from virii I spew from my nose and mouth"?  Is
that what they do?

I'll bet you a dollar they don't, because they know the truth.

One more simple question.  Do the doctors and nurses who test positive for
Wuhan Red Death just put on a mask and go back to work?

God did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of love.  Have faith, look

Re: [MBZ] OT - Mini Split and More

2020-07-04 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Huh.  Vent: does it need one or two?  In other words, does it heat up and
discharge interior air or exterior air?  The kind I worked with needed exterior
air.

Regular electrical socket, or does it need a 30 amp or 220 socket?

Re: [MBZ] Get'r Done! License plate version

2020-07-04 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Exactly, bend up the old plate at the ends, screw the new on top of the old.
Use shallow screws so they don't hit the body.  Plates are soft aluminum,
rusted screws that won't come out are steel, much easier to make new holes in
the plates.

Crude but effective, faster, and if needed I can remove the new plate and
transfer to another car.

[MBZ] Get'r Done! License plate version

2020-07-04 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
The fasteners holding the plate won't come loose, and I've got to put a new
plate on.  Soaked them for a few days with Kroil, but these fasteners seem to
be corroded in place.  They were hardware store bought, and that particular
store did not have the screws in stainless steel.

I think I'm going to just punch some new holes in the plates and screw down the
new plate over the old.

Re: [MBZ] Speaking of mini splits

2020-06-30 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
I've only had a couple experiences with those, and by the time you deal with
getting proper power to them (220 v 30 amp in my case) and then getting the
exhaust ducted and the water drain installed, you're most of the way to
installing an AC system.

Might be nice to wheel it around to blow cold air in your work location, might
save some electricity, but I think you'd be happier to just install a heat pump
and be done with it.

Install a mini-split, assemble your lift so it blows right in that area, get to
work.

Re: [MBZ] refrigerant leak detector/sniffer

2020-06-30 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
I have a clone of that, paid about $30 on eBay or Amazon.  Works ok.  Used it
last night to find that the compressor front seal is leaking on my '95 E300.

They are probably not as accurate for small leaks like a professional tool, but
useful enough for the occasional leak.  I've confirmed one bad evaporator and a
couple bad compressor seals.  Using dye works on everything but the evaporator
leaks.

[MBZ] OT Wuhan Red Death mortality rate study

2020-06-12 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
https://swprs.org/a-swiss-doctor-on-covid-19/#latest

1. According to the latest immunological and serological studies, the overall
lethality of Covid-19 (IFR) is about
0.1%[https://swprs.org/studies-on-covid-19-lethality/] and thus in the range of
a strong seasonal
influenza[https://www.ebm-netzwerk.de/en/publications/covid-19] (flu).

2. Even in global “hotspots”, the risk of death for the general population of
school and working age is typically in the range of a daily car ride to
work[https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.05.20054361v1]. The risk
was initially overestimated because many people with only mild or no symptoms
were not taken into account.
