Funny story….

I get a voice mail on my home phone from the inspector:

“Uh, I came out to check the holes for your piers today, and 15 of the 16 look 
good.  The last one has an issue because there’s a baby skunk in the bottom of 
it.”



We called a trapper, animal recovery person, you name it, and every one gave us 
a different suggestion on how to get the baby skunk out of the hole (these were 
four foot deep 12” diameter holes in very heavy clay, I might add.)  We knew a 
woman who did bird of prey rescues in the area, so we called her.

“Put a garden hose down the hole and turn it on.  If the little stinker doesn’t 
drown (or even if he does) he’ll float to the top and you can get him out or 
he’ll leave of his own accord.”

And that’s what we did.  I dumped a garden hose into the hole, turned on the 
spigot full blast, then retreated into the house to watch from inside through 
the sliding glass doors.  In about 2-3 minutes we could see the water level 
getting near the top, and then the baby skunk comes splashing out, walks out 
onto the lawn, shakes off the water and waddles off into the brush behind the 
house.

At least I didn’t have to entomb them under my pier.

53' moving van with underboxes is the way to  go.  Add ramps to the 
back, partion off the lower rear, and you haul your MB there, or you can 
buy a mini and store it crossways in the lower part of the belly of the 
trailer.  THink of it as a split level trailer house, with garage.


When I Started college, my idea was: On graduation, get a job at 
Edwards, live in a moving van in the desert to save , until I had 
saved enough money to hit critical mass.  Then have fun.   At that time, 
40' was the biggest trailer available.

I have been sorta intrigued by these tiny houses that are becoming 
popular.  Most of them seem to be built on like a 16ft utility trailer 
so they can be moved around to a semi-permanent location.  While some 
of them are pretty nice, it kinda makes me wonder why not just buy a 
travel trailer or something for cheap and live in that.  But whatever, 
I kinda like them as they look more like a real house.


I got to thinking about the size issue and it seemed that building one 
on a larger trailer, like a 3-car hauler or something, would work 
better.  I see these things that will haul 19k lb, they sit kinda low, 
3 axles, gooseneck, so that seems like a better kind of deal, instead 
of a 8X16ft house you could have say a 8X32ft house on a trailer, 
pretty much like a narrower single-wide.


This morning I saw this big bus motor home RV thing, it was HUGE!  I'm 
guessing 12ft tall anyway, probably has 8ft headroom inside and 
storage bins underneath, big pusher dizzel engine.  But those are 
quite spendy, even used ones are like $100k or more. I'm guessing 
those things are like 40ft long, so a lot of room.  I rode in one once 
that bands used for touring, it was really nice, granite kitchen and 
marble bathroom etc.


So then I was driving home and was sitting next to a semi with a 
trailer that said "53ft" on the side, that is pretty big.  I'm 
guessing the trailer is 8ft wide, and maybe 8ft headroom inside, which 
is kinda like a shipping container, and people use containers to build 
houses now.  Containers I think are up to 40ft for a double?  So 
either a trailer or a container would make a nice "tiny" house too.  
So then I was thinking one of those low-floor moving van trailers 
would be even better, more headroom, loft space.  Either buy an old 
trailer and fix it up, or buy a low-frame (or an equipment hauler low 
trailer) with the axles and tars and breaks and what not already in 
place, then build a "tiny" house on that -- more size, more headroom, 
etc.  And even if you had to buy an old tractor to pull it around, or 
hire that job out, you could have a larger, nicer "tiny" house than a 
single-wide. And some of those equipment trailers have wings that fold 
out to give maybe 12ft wide for a wide load, so that would allow a 
larger "tiny" house, I guess moving it would require some permit or 
something but still...


So that got me thinking about how tall a trailer can be, I'm thinking 
maybe 12ft max to clear bridges and stuff on the road, or can they go 
a bit higher?  I see those big trailers driving with a pace car with a 
pole to hit something before the truck would, and warn it off the 
bridge or whatever.  I guess if you weren't hauling a taller "tiny" 
house too far you could get by with something taller?


My lunch-time musings, but ideas accepted.  I'm wondering if there 
would be a market for larger "tiny" houses built to a spec that was 
much better than your average single-wide.  Make a good lake house, or 
cabin in the woods, or even a starter home that would be less than 
buying from a developer or used, esp if someone had a lot?  They could 
even be designed to gang up to get a bigger house, like a double-wide 
or even with wings that went off the sides.

I guess the only truck stop I've ever showered in is Dysarts in Bangor, Maine 
and it was free... Used to stop midway during a 5 hour drive, made the last 
couple hours much more pleasant.

Composting toilet, a 5gal bucket with wood shavings like you'd use for a 
hamster. Make your deposit, cover with wood shavings. When the bucket is full 
put it in a pile to compost. This is also known as the humanure method.
We tried it once at camp, it works fine, no smell. Outhouse is handier if you 
have the space.

Plenty of room for huge fresh water tank, gray water tank, and black
tank...
Just keep a long list of available RV dump stations so you can evacuate the
black tank and flush it clean.  Should be able to "dry camp" for a month
between dumps... if you plan for it.

I would assume so, but doing the math they come out small. 
You're not going to make 8' walls out of those for $50 a running foot as I 
usually expect.

Good info, thanks.  I kinda like the idea of having a fairly strong 
structure already built and dry, and the dimensions are quite spacious.  
Spray some foam on the walls with a bit of furring for wiring and yer 
good ta go.  I guess if one wanted to modify it a bit, a little cutting 
and welding or riveting or something would do the trick.


I was talking to a guy a coupla months ago who has a spray foam 
business, he said he does a lot of shipping containers like that, people 
use them for shops, offices, housing, etc, he said it works out well.


The other idea was to build on the low-boy, use SIPs for construction, 
with the wings it could go to 10-12ft wide, that would be quick and easy 
to get a structure up, a lot pre-fabbed in the shop, that could be about 
the same size or even bigger than your moving van trailer.


Or go the full route like you have, get the trailer and a tractor and 
outfit it and make a space for a car or two and toys and be completely 
mobile.

Yes, you would need an oversize permit. Most likely something 12 feet

Generally allowable height is 13' 6", though some states (like Texas)
allow them to be 14' high. Note that the driver is always responsible

far you could get by with something taller?

could be scaled up to do larger houses then it might be really a 
nice way to build a new house real quick. I wonder how they do

Yeah I guess that is it.  But more of the idea that I could build one at 
someplace with a shop space, then move it somewhere onto some land.  Or 
buy some land, put up a nice metal building for a shop, then build it 
from that, out of the   Or sell it, or something, I don't know.  These 
are just musings after seeing stuff about these things, got me wondering 
if there might be a way to build a nicer, larger package that is not 
200ft2.  A 53' trailer could get 400ft2 easy, maybe more with a loft 
space for beds and storage and such.  And if you went to 10' or 12' 
(wide load for the times it moved) you could get 600ft2 which is a 
decent-sized space, and with lofts that would be very cool.  Much better 
than a regular house trailer or RV.


Oh well, ideas...

If you shop the market for a bit, you should find a straight frame, 53 ft,
air ride suspension, trailer with "decent tires" for $8,000 or less.

Look for a trailer with an aluminum room, not fiberglass, also. Most of the
fleet haulers retire a trailer after 10 years or so. Expect to do the
brakes, wheel bearings, check the 5th wheel pin and plate for wear before
buying and over all condition.

Most used trailers on the market will have one of two types of rear doors..
garage door roll up, or barn door... expect damage to the doors as normal
on used trailer... New set of barn doors will cost you "around" $3,000
installed..[$1,500 each door. Drivers and loaders damage doors like they
were free by backing them into the dock with the doors not secured open.

102" width is max legal width for trailers.. anything wider takes a wide
load permit every time it's pulled down the road..

Good luck... therapy might be cheaper? ;))

I saw a show on a young couple that bought an old school bus and turned it into 
a tiny house/RV.  They called it a tiny house, but it still had the 
engine/running gear so I would call it an RV.  They did it pretty well.  Wood 
floors, granite countertops, etc.   But, the only people I have ever seen 
living in the tiny houses are very young couples or a young person.  I can't 
imagine being married for 15 (or more) years and then living in 600 sq. ft.  I 
would be claustrophobic.  But, I guess if one is 25 years old and doesn't have 
a lot of stuff, it could be fun.   Most of the people I have seen that like are 
exceptionally organized.  I think you would have to be.  

My wife's dad bought an old school bus and turned it into an RV.  He didn't 
bother with a toilet or shower.  But, it did have a small sink and beds and 
some sort of generator to run everything.

$100k or more. I'm guessing those things are like 40ft long, so a lot of room.

Interesting ideas.

Our furniture van has 2 double doors roadside, 4 double doors curbside.
With the addition of an upper deck to ours, some of those doors are not
operable.

The upper deck is shown in photographs attached to my reply to your first
message, which has yet to be approved.

There's a tiny house on a trailer for sale on the street close to where I
work, looks totally cheap cheap to me, from the outside.

If I were to invest time & money on an alternate living arrangement, it
would be a large steel-hulled yacht.  I'd much prefer to be able to move
around the globe at will.

back another one up to the opening to make a side wing.

40ft long, so a lot of room.  I rode in one once that bands used for
touring, it was really nice, granite kitchen and marble bathroom etc.

So then I was driving home and was sitting next to a semi with a trailer
that said "53ft" on the side, that is pretty big.  I'm guessing the trailer
is 8ft wide, and maybe 8ft headroom inside, which is kinda like a shipping
container, and people use containers to build houses now.  Containers I
think are up to 40ft for a double?  So either a trailer or a container
would make a nice "tiny" house too.  So then I was thinking one of those
low-floor moving van trailers would be even better, more headroom, loft
space.  Either buy an old trailer and fix it up, or buy a low-frame (or an
equipment hauler low trailer) with the axles and tars and breaks and what
not already in place, then build a "tiny" house on that -- more size, more
headroom, etc.  And even if you had to buy an old tractor to pull it
around, or hire that job out, you could have a larger, nicer "tiny" house
than a single-wide. And some of those equipment trailers have wings that
fold out to give maybe 12ft wide for a wide load, so that would allow a
larger "tiny" house, I guess moving it would require some permit or
something but still...

So that got me thinking about how tall a trailer can be, I'm thinking
maybe 12ft max to clear bridges and stuff on the road, or can they go a bit
higher?  I see those big trailers driving with a pace car with a pole to
hit something before the truck would, and warn it off the bridge or
whatever.  I guess if you weren't hauling a taller "tiny" house too far you
could get by with something taller?

My lunch-time musings, but ideas accepted.  I'm wondering if there would
be a market for larger "tiny" houses built to a spec that was much better
than your average single-wide.  Make a good lake house, or cabin in the
woods, or even a starter home that would be less than buying from a
developer or used, esp if someone had a lot?  They could even be designed
to gang up to get a bigger house, like a double-wide or even with wings
that went off the sides.

BTW... I also have "one of those big buses" you mentioned... 40' long X

Travel trailers are made out of aluminum foil and spit. The REQUIRE lots of 
maintenance and when the roof leaks they're quickly ruined. Notice how I didn't 
put "if" the roof leaks?You can get travel trailers cheap cheap, sometimes 
people will pay you to take them away...
