They are both the same thing, an air filter on the oil return pipe that used to run from the air filter to the oil pan. It was put on to keep dirt out and become the new blow-by exit since he blocked the old one on the valve cover when he took out the original air filter to allow more dirt...

Thanks Curley, My problem was seeing the hose I needed to apply vacuum to.  It just looks like a bundle of hoses and wires under the intake manifold.  I recall replacing it on my W123 240D which was a piece of cake.  This is a whole different animal! Thanks for the info though! LarryT 91 300D
