Re: [MBZ] OT dishwashers -- Now Welding

2016-04-05 Thread clay via Mercedes
I have been hunting R107 clusters. I busted a breaker bar and a ratchet
attempting to get the dang 22mm nuts loose to remove the steering wheels. Over
the weekend by horn pad decided to let loose and would bleat at the most
inopportune moments. I figured out now to get the pad back where it belongs.
I had welded up a magic tool to get the steering nut off. I had a 22mm arm
from a 4 way tire iron and a strange ratcheting tire wrench with a hollow shaft
that this arm would fit. My weld job was less than spectacular this weekend.
I thought I had ground off the anodizing as well as the chrome, but the welds
let loose at PnP yesterday. I could not get the cluster or wheels.

Back at home I really went to town grinding to really bare metal and laid the
welds down layer upon layer so I had a bulging knob when I was done. This
morning I hit another PnP and was able to liberate both a Steering wheel that
is complete and a spare cluster. And another set of M117 valve covers I am
going to attempt to polish to a mirror sheen.

Yep, they do have welding, construction, dental assistant, mechanics,
nursing and many other programs at the Com. College about 2 miles from

The community college in Los Alamos (aka UNM-Los Alamos) has welding
classes that are well attended. Perhaps that's the level at which Wilton
should look.

Unfortunately, most HS vocational programs are a thing of the past. Our school
still has them though. My son went for a vocational welding class, and after
some years of "finding himself", is now working as a welder. Imagine that.

We used to have a built in dishwasher, but he died (Pop), so I have been doing

Years ago I was building a video studio for my employer. We'd decided to paint
one wall green in case we wanted to do some chromakey work. I explained to the
guy that it was important that the wall be flat and the paint be
non-reflective.He spent half a day getting it flat, he finally made a sanding
block out of 4 feet of 2x6. You couldn't find an imperfection on that wall
anywhere. The paint was perfect too, he put on 3 coats in the second half of
the day and you couldn't see any lap lines or drips or anything. That guy was a

Yes is does have the heating element and when opening the door the interior
steams a ton and is very hot. On all the stuff I have seen on line videos and
such with washers with this problem it seems to be a fairly simple fix which
involves taking apart stuff below the wash arms down to the chopper. All the
videos are if your typical maytag/whirlpool/kitchenaid. Mine is different. The
wash arm and all the stuff under it requires no tools to remove. Everything
snaps off and as far as I can go is down to a little filter like assembly (it's
not really a filter but just seems to catch big stuff). There is nothing else
to remove and no screws or covers to remove like other models I have seen so
whatever inside that may be plugged up appears you have to either replace the
whole pump assembly or take the thing out of the cabinet and take apart from
underneath.

Not long after we were married, we had the opportunity to buy an Andrew
Carnegie library built in the 1930s in the neighborhood where the wife grew up.
Beautiful place, brick exterior with columns, huge interior, etc. Here is a
link to a Street view of it on the right:

https://www.google.com/maps/@39.4816306,-86.0526114,3a,75y,270h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s304l4nek7OJ4GpnO5H0Gbw!2e0!7i3328!8i1664!6m1!1e1

City wanted to sell it and couldn’t find a buyer for over two years. The price
in 1980 dollars was $40,000. It was in great physical shape and was a huge
space inside, with the main floor being pretty much one giant open room and the
lower level being separate rooms with a big kitchen in one of them.

Wife wouldn’t go for it. A few months later the city sold it to a developer
who made $150k condos out of it.

Re: [MBZ] OT dishwashers

2016-04-03 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Boy I would sure love to hear some Wilton stories about restoring mansions. I
have always wanted to do that. In fact many years ago we had the chance to buy
an old mansion like house that belonged to a local dr. Was an early 1900s was
not Victorian, but it slips the mind what style they called it. Colonial maybe.
We could have picked it up for something like 60k, had the loan all lined out
etc but for whatever reason we didn't do it. It's main issues were pluming to
the upstairs bathroom.
Several years before that there was and old Victorian that was for sale for a
long time that belonged to a school teacher that died. At the time is was
pretty much original, had all original hardwood floors all thru the house,
original interior walls, bathrooms and such. I think it got down to like $85k
and was finally sold. This was in the late 90s when I knew nothing about buying
real estate. Whoever bought it completely gutted the interior. I mean
completely gutted, all interior walls torn out, everything. It went back on the
market I think they got foreclosed on or something. I went and saw it then. A
few years later it was back on the market after somebody had completely redone
it. We went and looked at it and it was priced in mid to upper 200s but the
floor plan inside was completely different, it was just like walking into a
brand new cookie cutter house. They totally ruined the charm of the house, it
was very very sad.

My dad has a KitchenAid that was purchased new by my grandmother in early

Well, if they don't get clean in the bottom rack the machine has a problem.
I have no experience with DW innards; it may be trivial or unfixable. A new

early to mid 80's. It is a roll around one that you hook up to the
kitchen sink faucet and drains there as well. It is really old
school with the big chrome push buttons and such. It still works
great.

am running them again this time in the bottom rack. The top rack just does not
clean anymore and the upper arm does spin and shoot water. I'm at a loss except

Just a couple of suggestions. First, don't know whether you have
"hard or soft" water. I've only used Cascade powder since my Maytag
was new. I never use rinse agents, so I've never used that
capability on the Maytag. Second, when I built my house, I installed
an inline GE whole house water filter. I change the filter once per
year (just the wife and I). So maybe my filter helps temper the
water. I've always found water spotting on glassware to be more a
function of the detergent and less a problem with the dishwasher.

Just some extra thoughts.

The Bosch gets things noticeably cleaner than the Maytag ever did,
and that's especially noticeable with glassware.

Do realize that your water could play a part in this, too, so it's
not necessarily the dishwasher's fault. We use a rinse agent with
the Bosch, which we did with the Maytag as well, but the Maytag
didn't give you the ability to adjust the "dose" so it went through
the stuff like mad.

Don't buy the top of the line Bosch. I bought a bottom end one for
around $600. The only differences I hound were fancier racks and
more (useless) functions on the controls. There's no clear benefit
in my mind for buying the more expensive models.

Dan

That has been true with DWs for 40-50 years. The working parts are
all the same. the fluff is fancier in the expensive one.

problems with the door areas. Also, is your hot water set high

cleaned my "old" Maytag last year after 16 years of operation and
found no similar problems. Maybe I'm lucky or whatever.

Or maybe you use cascade and the others don't.

Way back when I went to a fridgiare appliance school and they flat
out told us that if the customer did not use cascade in the DW, they
WOULD have problems.

I vaguely recall that Bosch dishwashers are built in NC somewhere, so
merkun-built, for whatever that is worth.

MB are expanding the Sprinter factory in the area, on Friday I went to
pick up my wife's packet for the local bridge run, which she did not do,
and they had an "expo" at the place with various vendors. MB were there
trying to recruit workers and had some cheepchinee swag to give away which
I got for mama. Boeing, Volvo, and MB all going after local workers,
which is interesting.

Right, though he claims to know all about it. This job does not need a
plasterer nor a dry-waller - just somebody with some common sense and willing
to listen to me, who can easily tell such a person how to do it and even
broaden his/her skill set. I'd bet that I could teach any of "youse guys" to
do it very well in far less than an hour.

Any of the pros at HVAC-TALK would probably tell you the opposite, oversized compressors cycle themselves to death. It's more the number of power cycles per hour than the running minutes per hour that matters. My parents' Coldspot freezer, still running when retired last month, is one example. It had been running constantly (except for power failures, annual defrostings, and 6 relocations) since my brother broke the temperature knob off of it in 1959. Yes, it was worn, yes, it clattered horribly (not sure if the clatter was internal or from worn out mounts) upon restart after a power failure, but it was made to last and it did, and the fact that it only had a couple of hundred starts in the past 50 years probably added decades to its life.

We do use the rinse stuff in the maytag as well. It does allow you to
adjust the amount going in, maybe I have it set too low. I think I may
pull the drain line and see if maybe it is plugged up, and maybe pull
the thing apart again but as I mentioned it seems with the Bosch with
just a simple filter system there would not be a need to have to take
things apart all the time to clean them out.

Re: [MBZ] OT dishwashers

2016-04-03 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
One last question regarding dishwasher before I load up in my 6.5 turbo
diesel powered Suburban (required diesel content) and drop a grand on
the top of the line Bosch that Lowes has. Have you had your Bosch ever
leave deposits on your glasses in the top rack. This is the main problem
I have having now. I have had cheap dishwashers do it. My expensive at
the time Kitchen Aid in the other house would do it until you took the
thing apart and cleaned it out. This one is now doing it and still
doing it even after taking it apart. I am thinking with this Maytag
perhaps I need to further disassemble it and maybe there is even more
that needs to be cleaned. I am starting to think that these hard food
disposals chop everything up and after a while they start leaving that
fine chopped up food on the dishes especially in the top rack. Where as
with the filter models like Bosch its not chopping up stuff fine which
would lead to the internal works getting gummed up, it all gets trapped
by the filters which are easy to clean. This is my theory anyway.

The Maytag was flat out nasty in this regard. If I didn’t clean it about every

this goop.

Curly,
I totally agree about the energy rating, especially on refrigerators. My
current one required a new compressor, fortunately before going out of
warranty. The repair guy said the companies are undersizing the compressor to
get better energy ratings, but as such, the compressor wears out sooner because
it has to run too much since it's too small.

We have a Whirlpool "Quiet Partner I", which was about $200 a few years
ago. Quieter than the 1994 Maytag it replaced, but not terribly quiet.
Plastic tub. No filters, not many options, just gets the job done.

I don't remember which brands make repair info available to home owners,
but I think that is important. I think it is very hard to find repair
info for Maytag appliances.

Kitchen appliances are very simple compared to our beloved cars. There's
no good reason we shouldn't also fix our own appliances (if we want to).

I used to search CL for Paykel -CPAP to weed out the breathing machines. Took me about 4 months to get the two dishwashers. About once a year I find something I can't pass up and throw it in the back of the garage, like a washer-dryer set for $150 (now owned by my neighbors) or an Intuitive washer with a broken fin on the agitator for $50 (seller bought a new set when the heating element burned out in the dryer, the appliance store hauled the dryer away for free before he advertised the washer, I could have cried, threw away an Intuitive dryer instead of giving it to me).Mitch. Around here, the cost of a service call can easily exceed fifty percent of the
cost of a new appliance. If I can't fix myself, I buy a new appliance. If
repair info is difficult or impossible to find, I won't buy that brand.

We bought a Samsung refrigerator about seven or eight years ago, had the
control panel replaced under warranty (which would cost about 1/3 of the
purchase cost if paid out of pocket, once you add labor it's time for a new
refrigerator in my book). The filtered water function has died, didn't use
that much anyway so that hasn't been addressed, but other than that it has
performed extremely well.

Our Maytag was new in 2010, installed when the former owner replaced all of the
kitchen appliances.

It didn't clean well and had an issue with the buildup of gunk at the door
hinge area. We had Maytag check it out on at least two occasions, both of which
we were told we weren't removing enough food from the dishes before loading
(not true) and we were using the wrong detergent (we changed to their
recommended brand when we were told this on the first service call.)

Cleaning the filter screen was a PITA, and the machine was LOUD.

When the front panel controls started acting up I didn't even look at it. I
yanked it and replaced it with a Bosch.

I would add that we bought a Maytag range/convection oven that's been hinky for
a long time. The bottom oven won't go to the indicated temperature if you
change the temperature after initially setting it. Two service calls, can't
find the problem, throw hands up and say "Sorry!"

We just stopped using the lower oven for the most part.

Bosch make different racks for different countries, but you should be able
to order what you need in terms of racks if you do some homework. The one
we got in 2010 is still in service but the door itself is flimsy
torsionally and the metal at the hinges was giving up, literally cracking.
Not impressed. Filters need cleaning and occasional de scale with vinegar.
No food grinder. Filters are easily removed. Racks in ours were terrible -
none of our dishes fit into that thing efficiently, and the flatware rack
was in the back of the bottom rack, which has to be the worst location for
it. The wheels fell off the top rack all the time and would get lost if not
put back on promptly. Yes it is quiet and energy efficient. Takes two hours
to do anything unless you pick quick wash, which turns out to be 90% of
what you use the machine for. Not terrible, but I won't be buying another
one.

I think i mentioned before here, but you should know that Bosch make the
dishwashers for all other high end brands also, eg kitchenaid, and
thermador and possibly viking/wolf also. So you can shop around the
different brands for the best price on features and rack styles you want.

I think Miele might make one, but it will be double price of a bosch, and
probably only 1.5x as good. We are going with Fisher and paykel dual
drawer model next.

More or less analogous to cheep chinee chit

Or preiswerter deutscher scheiße if you prefer.

We have a Whirlpool "Quiet Partner I", which was about $200 a few years ago.
Quieter than the 1994 Maytag it replaced, but not terribly quiet. Plastic tub.
No filters, not many options, just gets the job done.

I don't remember which brands make repair info available to home owners, but I
think that is important. I think it is very hard to find repair info for
Maytag appliances.

Kitchen appliances are very simple compared to our beloved cars. There's no
good reason we shouldn't also fix our own appliances (if we want to).

I like the hidden controls. And their racks can be funky and tale a little
getting used to.

Do you guys like the hidden controls in the top or the ones with the
front controls? It seems the hidden controls are the popular ones these
days.

Different Bosches come with different racks but the guts are all
pretty much the same, just with different controls. I bought a Bosch
off the floor at Lowes and got them to swap the racks for another one

in Houston.

There are a coupla filters and a thing in the bottom you have to clean
occasionally but it comes apart pretty easily.

Well this maytag is pretty quiet, but I am just so annoyed with
having to take it apart and clean it out all the time. I hate to
ditch it already when its so new but I guess I can just put it out in
the garage and have it available in case the dishwasher in the rental
house craps out. I do like this 3rd top rack on some of the Bosch
ones I have seen. How does the filter thing work? Also, which Bosch
did you get?

Ditch it like we did and buy a Bosch. You’ll never regret it. It’s
so quiet the cat’s purring downs out the sound it makes. It cleans
stuff that we used to hand wash because we knew it wouldn’t come
clean in the Maytag.

So when we moved into this house I put in all new appliances which
are all matching Maytag from the same series. This dishwasher
is/was the top of the line Maytag (at the time, not sure if it
still is or not). It has a hard food disposal which should get rid
of pretty much everything but it has a series of different sorts of
screens under the spray arm and down into the sump. I pretty much
have to make sure there is not a single kernel of corn or green
bean on a plate before putting it in the dishwasher because when
its done such items will be down in the bottom of the washer, not
even sucked down to where they would be chopped up by the
disposal. If you take all this off there is another sort of screen
assembly deal that catches all sorts of crap. Long story short I
do not see how food particles would even make it past all this to
be chopped up by the chopper. I pretty much have to pull
everything apart about once every month or 2 and clean all the food
particles out. Lately the top rack is not getting clean at all even
though I know the top spray arm is spinning etc, its just leaving
deposits all over everything. I pulled everything apart again and
cleaned it even though I just did it a couple of weeks ago and it
still does the same thing. I will research further but WOW it sure
does not seem like you should have to take the dishwasher apart
monthly to clean it out. I am starting to seriously consider just
buying another one, this time maybe a Bosch or something. I have
always looked for washers with the disposals and I understand the
european models such as Bosch only have a filter that you have to
clean out. Since these are designed to be cleaned out it seems
easier than having to take the dish washer apart anyway. I know
several of you swear by Bosch so what is your feedback, or anybody
elses? How do these filters compare to the hard food disposals?
Any thoughts or ideas on my Maytag? This is the one we have now
that is about a year and a half old.
