Does the shifter lever feel like it is actually engaging the transmission, or
does it feel like it is disconnected? Can you see anything bent or broken in
the linkage between the shifter and transmission?
Squeeze the clutch lever and does it feel like normal?

The best bet is to get a parts bike and have a shop do the engine swap if you
aren't able to do it. I don't know if parts like main bearings are easy to get
for that year/model. For my 83 when the engine spun a main bearing I ended up
selling it since it wasn't very easy to find everything and
I would guess it is about 3-4 lbs for the assembly. So maybe ~.5% of total bike
weight. Knowing that it is VERY useful but only a small percent of times, you
could pull it to save weight and bolt it up for oil changes and service.

Hopefully you can check the Tach cable, but to me it almost sounds like you've
got a vacuum leak whistling. It sounds like one of the carb-to-head boots is
missing the plug screw and is whistling.

It sounds like you're shorting to ground via the splices that you made. I'd
undo that and try to find dual element LED replacement bulbs.
Also, other users have reported having to use different flashers than stock
since the LEDs draw less current than incandescent bulbs.
