Thanks Gary, I will keep your advice in mind. I rode the San Gabriel

because of the ride, but also because the observatory at the top. For those

I did LA for years before it became 24X7 gridlock and police pursuits. Ride
like you are invisible, because to car drivers you are. Even when they look
right at you.

Make Yosemite plans for the spring as soon as the weather warms in April or
May before school lets out, or the early fall before the first big snow
storm. I avoid the place all summer, just too nuts on those slow twisty
roads and packed concessions. The Tioga pass road (with a glacier or two, a
couple of lakes & lots of impressive granite 10,000 mountains) remains
closed from snow pack (usually November) until about June or whenever it
melts. In fact I just went there today 10/23 and avoided the valley, as the
CalTrans signs said the parking lots were full (of foreign tourists). A 140
mile round trip took 6 hours. But if you have not seen much of CA then the
loop from Pasadena to Yosemite then across the high country and back home
on Hwy 395 through the desert side of the Sierras would give you a real
look - at the Southern half. Or you could just test your skills going up to
the TV towers above you on Mt. Wilson. Be happy to ride with you if you
come this way.

Hi Javier, I just stumbled into this Google group while looking at stuff
for the original Nighthawk - 82 CB650SC I am restoring, and saw your trip.
At 65 years old I now live just outside Yosemite in a town called
Oakhurst, CA., but was born & raised in LA near Pasadena in W. Covina. Your
description & pics was great and brought back memories of my Fresno/ LA /
Washinton DC/Niagra Falls Canada/ across the Mackinaw Bridge/ 250 miles of
woods in "upper" MI & back to Oakhurst CA trip. 7800 miles in 29 days on a
Honda ST1100 in 2010. Those kind of trips are a real love/ hate test of our
motorcycle love affair. After 3 days of non-stop chilly rain from Lake
Superior- Duluth MN to Rapid City SD to Rock Springs WY. I was ready to
chuck it all and take a bus home :). Moreso after the motel TV weather babe
predicted snow tomorrow on my way to Salt Lake City. Got an extra day of
sleep in Rock Springs after that report. LA is just too crowded and Mad Max
for me to enjoy these days. But Central California from the desert to the
coast is the best riding in the world. Get some time doing Death Valley,
the Sierras and Hwy 1 on that beast Concourse.

Last time I was in Monterey/ Carmel By the Sea I went into the Hogs Breath
restaurant (was owned & run by Clint Eastwood when he was the mayor there).
I ran into an Austrian firefighter on vacation who flew to San Francisco,
rented a big Harley and had done the West. He was most impressed with
Arches NP in Utah, and was on his way to San Diego. Now Arches is on my
to-do list. What a sport.

Glad you liked them George. I was fun to share the experiences and also
helps to sort of keep a journal of all the places visited (after a few days
everything starts to blend a bit). I want to write a little something
called "things I learned". Hopefully I will find the time once I am settle
in.

Where to now? Well, of course to Atlanta, so that you can see New Mexico,
Texas, New Orleans, and the Gulf Coast along the way!

Glad you enjoyed the trip. Now, your uneasiness about a long ride is gone

Boston. Now I'll be able to come visit you in Pasadena.

I hope your Nighthawk and all your stuff made it to Pasadena without

Hi Paul,

Yes, I am worried something is funny with this bike. I didn't mentioned but
recently the bike was dropped by a car backing up and pushing it off the center
stand in the place where I was staying in Boston. I checked everything and it
only seem to have some scratches, but I wonder if that has something to do. The
pulling to the right is only noticeable if I take my hands off the grips, which
I didn't do before (so I don't know if it did before the fall). I am hoping
this can be solved by simply adjusting correctly the dampening and preload on
the forks.

I am now leaving AZ to CA. I will take one more suggestion from Glenn and visit
the Joshua Tree Park and then is the end. Will post the last pictures tonight.

Cheers,
Javier.

Hi,

Yesterday I took the bike to a dealer in Flagstaff, AZ and they changed the oil
and put a new front tire. I thought that will solve the issue of the bike
pulling to the right, but it still does it. So now I am worried about something
in the forks being wrong.

Anyway, I realized that just by coincidence my hotel in Flagstaff was in old
route 66. This morning was raining and cold. I had to wait until it cleared up
a but and then I went to the Grand Canyon. It was still cold and cloudy while I
was there, but still the place is so magnificent that it didn't matter. Got
some good shots which I am sharing here. When I went back to bike to leave it
had already cleared up and got sunny and warm (of course). I had parked in the
"Raven" section, and I found a raven seating on top of the "Raven" sign just
next to my bike. Was kind of funny. I left the Canyon and took 40 west. Then
started to rain again. I happen to stop in one of the places where they do the
whole old Rt 66 stuff. Pretty neat. When the rain passed I continued until Lake
Havasu City, AZ. I am spending the night here and tomorrow I will check out the
Josuah Tree Park (per recommendation of Glenn) and then finally reach Pasadena.

As usual, some pictures that go alone with the text.

You can check the alignment with florescent tubes (they're really really
straight). Hold one end against the back tire at two points and let it
extend towards the front. Since the back tire is wider than the front tire
there will be a gap between the tube and the sidewall of the front, measure
that gap on both sides. Or, get two tubes and a friend and measure both at
the same time.

2016-09-29 Thread Javier Garcia
Hi Paul,

Yes, I am worried something is funny with this bike. I didn't mentioned but
recently the bike was dropped by a car backing up and pushing it off the
center stand in the place where I was staying in Boston. I checked
everything and it only seem to have some scratches, but I wonder if that
has something to do. The pulling to the right is only noticeable if I take
my hands off the grips, which I didn't do before (so I don't know if it did
before the fall). I am hoping this can be solved by simply adjusting
correctly the dampening and preload on the forks.

I am now leaving AZ to CA. I will take one more suggestion from Glenn and
visit the Joshua Tree Park and then is the end. Will post the last pictures
tonight.

Cheers,
Javier.

Here is one of the videos I took coming back from Canyonlands Park. You can
see how many turns there are. It actually gets a lot better right after I
passed that blue car but unfortunately my camera battery ran out. Also,
there is an annoying sound in the video that I don't know where is coming
from. Anyway, here it is.

In fact, I got worried because I started getting dizzy at the top after a
few minutes. If you live near sea level going that high that fast can
really make you sick. So I would advice to stay at least one night in the
town and then go up. It also got very cold very quick (at the bottom was
66F, at the top 28F), so people should be prepared for that.

I'm so glad you got up to Pike's Peak. 14,110 ft.
As I was reading about your change of plans to Colo. Spgs. I was going to
suggest that.

Last time I was there was one of the Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb. We camped
at Devil's Playground, that wide spot to the west at 10,000 ft just before
the top.
I still remember the awed feeling from walking around the top of a mountain
just 300ft shorter than our Mt. Rainier. So cool.
I still remember how easy it is to get so high that you cannot walk very
far at all before being totally out of breath.
I'm glad it was a clear day for you too.

Since you're going to LA, I imagined that you would go to the south rim and
then go south to I-40. It's also possible to go to the north rim and then go
through Las Vegas and down to LA. If you do that, you can also see the desert
lake at Paige, AZ. Very nice.
If you go to 4 corners, you will also be close to Mesa Verde,  although that
trip does take some time.
Anyway, two years ago I went to the south rim and then went down and spent the
night in Williams Arizona.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Coast-to-Coast trip

2016-09-26 Thread Javier Garcia
Great Glenn, I will keep that in mind. I am not sure if I can make it to
the Grand Canyon today. Google says 8 and a half hours to the north rim,
which in reality will be a lot more with all the stops in the parks. I am
thinking in maybe reach 4 corners at the end of the day and then find a
place to sleep and do GC tomorrow morning. Which one do you suggest, north
or south rim? The north looks easier for me to get from here, but if the
south is a lot better I will do it too.

"Don't leave for later, later might never happen."

These are words to live by! They say that when you are old and look back on
your life, the things you will regret most are the things you didn't do.

I'm going to give you two more suggestions. 1. Don't leave Arches National
Park until you find and photograph the Delicate Arch. 2. After you leave
Arches, take the time to see Dead Horse Point State Park. When you leave
Arches, backtrack a little bit NORTH on Rt. 191 to Rt. 313 to do this. It
will be worth it.

You will get to the Grand Canyon late in the day. This is actually a good
thing, as the directional light accentuates the bluffs. If you want to stay
inside the park on the south rim, you can. The rooms are not that
expensive. Otherwise, make sure you have enough gas and ride south to
Williams, AZ. It's kind of pricey because they have a captive audience, but
there are like 3 Motel 6's in one little town, and we stayed in one of
them. Since the summer is over, you probably won't have to book ahead on
booking.com. Enjoy!

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Coast-to-Coast trip

2016-09-25 Thread Javier Garcia
I don't mean to lecture anyone now that I am doing this, but I will say
that at least in my case there was some mental barrier to surpass. I was
indeed worried about how tough this will be and if I could make it or not.
It is hard but also extremely fun and rewarding. There is so much to see!
There are many details to consider before doing a trip like this, but at
the end of the day you just need to set a date and leave no matter what.
The details can always be fixed along the way.

Don't leave for later, later might never happen.

Javier.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Coast-to-Coast trip

2016-09-24 Thread EGrider
Javier, since you are already in the Colorado Springs area, you MUST see
the Garden of the Gods! It's gorgeous. And speaking of gorges, do you have
a good reason to go to Denver? Someone to visit? If not,you can take Rt. 50
and see the Royal Gorge at Canyon City and then go north at Salida on 285.
Take Rt. 24 at Buena Vista and either go through Aspen or straight up to
I-70 and then over to Utah. You will love it.

Or go up to Denver as planned. Either way, you made it across Kansas, so
now the ride begins. You will never forget the next few days of your life.
Enjoy! Glenn

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Coast-to-Coast trip

2016-09-21 Thread EGrider
First, I recommend that you get rid of that top box and strap a piece of
Samsonite on your bike with bungees so that you can be cool. Then make sure
your headlight goes out once in a while (I actually finally installed a new
right handlebar assembly this week, so that's hopefully history).

You might as well take or play cat and mouse with I-70 to Denver because
there's nothing in the way of natural beauty across the Midwest and Great
Plains anyway. There are roads that parallel I-70 and are almost as fast
and a tad bit more interesting. From Denver you can either take 285 down
through Fairplay and head to Durango (you could see the Great Sand Dunes
north of Alamosa, which are cool) or you can go over the mountains on I-70.
I would go I-70 or parallel back roads. Stop in Boulder, Central City,
Vail, the spa at Glenwood Springs, or do Rocky Mountain National Park if
you have time. Take the Loveland Pass instead of the Eisenhower Tunnel
across the divide for the view. Get off I-70 and cut down through Utah on
Rt. 191, making sure to see Arches Natl. Park in Moab, Utah and maybe
Canyonlands farther down.

Continue on Rt. 191 though Mexican Hat, Utah and then Monument Valley by
all means, and then over to the Grand Canyon. After that you can see the
London Bridge at Lake Havasu City (not so exciting, but weird) and Joshua
Tree Natl. Park, or just take I-40 if you just want to get to Pasadena at
that point.

I envy you my friend. Happy Trails. Keep the pictures coming.
