I will probably purchase it before the end of the week so I can get it at

Is Prince A Genius?
By Cory Treffiletti

[IMAGE] As always, I like to scour the press to find new and innovative
methods for marketing your products and services. Since my primary hobby
involves music, much of my press-time is devoted to the music industry,
which, as we all know, is in a rather dire situation. That's due to the
ongoing decrease in CD sales and the continual movement toward digital,
which makes it more difficult for the labels to make the margins they
were so used to in the past. That being said, there is one artist who
continually finds new and interesting ways to get his albums into the
marketplace. That artist is currently and once again for the foreseeable
future, named Prince.

Prince just released his 473rd CD (probably not that many, but the guy
does have an impressive catalogue of music) titled Planet Earth. From
the reviews I've seen, this album represents a return to form for his
purple majesty, but the way it was released is most interesting. Prince
attached a copy of his new album to every issue of London's Mail on
Sunday on July 15, so that everyone who bought the paper also picked up
a copy of Planet Earth.

According to the methodology that Soundscan uses to report album sales in
the U.S., that could translate to a very large number of sales in its
first week. Soundscan is a product of the Nielsen company and is used in
the U.S. to track album sales and put together the album charts. It only
works in the U.S. and Canada, so this little trick won't do it right now.
But the equivalent tracking in the U.K. should see some very interesting
sales numbers!

As can be expected, music retailers in the U.K. were not so pleased about
this and in retaliation, they've decided not to sell the new album. I
guess that would be bad if actual album sales revenue mattered to the
only Prince not able to wear a crown in England. If you remember a
number of! years a go, Prince sort of went off the reservation a bit
and changed his name to a symbol in protest of his label, Warner Bros,
which at the time, would not allow him to manage and distribute his music
the way he wanted.

Eventually his contract expired and Prince went indie, deciding to manage
his own development and distribution, and the results have been pretty
amazing. Prince now is able to get his music into as many hands as
possible and still make a living! He's launched a number of albums since
then, of which his last two efforts sparked minor hits (Musicology and
3121). Musicology sparked a similar controversy because it ended up in
the top 10 for a number of consecutive weeks due to the genius marketing
idea that everyone who purchased a ticket to see Prince live also
received a copy of the CD. Everyone with a brain knows that Prince is
one of the most incredible live acts on the planet, and his shows always
sell-out, so of course, the inevitable sales appeared to put Prince back
into the mainstream!

This was all capped by an amazing performance on the Super Bowl, where
Prince ripped out his usual numbers, as well as some numbers by Dylan and
the Foo Fighters. Needless to say, people were impressed.

In an industry that is continually crying foul and complaining that
they cannot make money anymore, there is a ray of light that shines from
artists such as Prince, my all-time favorites Pearl Jam and
I-write-way-too-many-albums-each-year Ryan Adams. These artists are
all independent, in some cases, working with labels only as a source of
distribution, but they use digital media and the numerous tools at their
disposal to do what they love -- create music -- in an efficient manner.
It allows them to make a comfortable living, meaning own a nice home and
a decent car. They seem to be having fun, too!

So next time you hear about how the music industry is wasting away as a
result of digital medi! a, Visit www.3121.com to see what Prince is up
to. Chances are, you'll see someone making quite a business for
themselves, and a model that should be hitting the labels squarely in the
head!

And for more kicks, check out www.pearljam.com and www.ryan-adams.com and
see how other artists are using the Web to get their music out there.

You mean baby knows? I like both of those songs but again my opinion.

We all have music styles we like. And styles of Prince music we like.
I really haven't liked his ballads on the last few albums - I want another
adore, insatiable, do me baby. I don't think Call My Name, Satisfied, Future
Baby Mamma really live up to it.

My favorite song of the last few albums is Black Sweat which some of you
probably hate - but I love the falsetto, straight funk groove Prince.

RE: NPNY: Planet Earth Anyone Buy It?

2007-07-25 Thread Oliver, Damon
I don't think he is trying to make hits, we have been conditioned by the
industry to think that older artist with new music are trying to make
hits. True in some cases but not for Prince. It only takes 2 brain cells
to have a hit (example: this is why I'm hot, beautiful girls/suicidal) I
think that Prince is missing a muse, someone or something to inspire him
or spark him creatively. But we all know he has it in him to do better,
or even dust off some of the jams out of his vault that haven't been
released or bootlegged. Shoot, even do a whole cover album, I love to
hear his interpretations of EWF's I Write A Song For You or Stevies
Superstition.

For those of us who were alive when Prince started, we're all around the
age
where this division of opinion is a good thing.

It's just like how there are still people who go to every Rolling Stones
and
KISS show, knowing that the best days of those bands have long since
passed.
They're going to relive the good old days. The difference with Prince, I
think, is that we all KNOW that he can do better, and there's the
question
of all this genius unreleased stuff he has just sitting around. Do any
of
you who say you like this album believe he can't do any better? This is
a
dude who sold hundreds of thousands of copies of Lovesexy, a one track
album. I think Lovesexy has more musical depth than Planet Earth, and
if
the only reason why is because he's older now, then perhaps he's done.
I
personally hope not, because there isn't exactly any one else out here
challenging the musical (and corporate) status quo like him.

On the average, it looks like everyone has 3 or 4 songs that they like
from
this album. Compared to entire ALBUMS we've liked from him in the past.
I
think that says something about an artist of Prince's caliber. And what
I
think it says is that he's trying to make hits, which is a bad move.

See, I thought he was on to something with Black Sweat. When I heard it, I
thought ahh Prince is back on track! then the rest of the album left me
completely confused.

I think if Planet Earth was D'Angelo's comeback album, for example, people
would line up in the streets and throw stones at him. If any other artist
tried Future Baby Mama we'd be talking about how RB is dead. But because
it's Prince, we're letting it go.

I like when Prince plays hard. Extended versions. Solos. Funk. But I also
like when he has something to say. Even when he was preaching to us, he had
more moments than 3 out of 10.

Moderator: yeah I have a major issue with ghetto RB and I was willing to
give Future Baby Mama a pass because it was prince. At least its not
My Wifey or You Remind Me Of My Jeep or something romantic like that

Yea, Prince could bang out some serious funky-soul-blues on any of the
subjects you mentioned. Any of our starring female lushes, LL, PH, NR, or
BS would be great material ('Only put their initials because they get more
than enough publicity as it is!) Picking up any tabloid or newswire story
would do...they're so many to select! How to get more PR bang Hollywood

Some great points have been made. Prince's music today is certainly
not the quality it was in the past, and he surely can use some creative
inspiration. The recent stuff is average. I still love him for his
outrageousness, and believe he'll find the muse he needs. Let's just
consider this era of his music a bit of down time for his Royal Badness.
His live appearances and performances still kick have stood the test of
time. Peace.

Moderator: you know Prince already has a wealth of personal experinces to
sing about but he doesn't choose to for some reason. He could sing about
stuff like:

1. get divorced for the 2nd time and legal proceedings
2. Moviestar friends and drug use
or my favorite
3. It's hard to find clothin' my size and I'm a dude.

I think these are all things we could all be associate with. You know

You know, this is a brilliant point. A Muse. A LOT of artists we love need
new muses. It's like when Stevie Wonder had Syreeta around, his work was
incredible! Nowadays, we get What The Fuss.

I wonder, though, is Prince's best muse himself or us? His live shows are
hands down great, and that's been pretty consistent for 30 years. It's the
RECORDED work that seems to vary in quality. Maybe he needs to record all
of his future albums live?

Moderator: The lack of a good muse would explain the less the weak lyric
righting, because he has definitely had some good musicians around [expect

think that Prince is missing a muse, someone or something to inspire him
or spark him creatively. But we all know he has it in him to do better,

Not every person is ready to do that though. Its not always good therapy for
all who do that. There's other forms of therapy that deal with working
through serious life issues that could be more productive and healthy then
writing

ivializing such matters.

Wrong: for the record Lovesexy as the follow-up to SOTT was WEAK and a joke.
There music was light as hell. Only because of nostalgia do we all think it
was great: and only because he toured with that sorry album.

TRC as a religious themed album (albeit more strict or whatever word I cant
think of right now) was a lot more on point musically. Only AnnaStesia and
Positivity are interesting. The rest of that shit is what yall call wrote in

NPNY: Planet Earth

2007-07-25 Thread april snow
Well I dont think its the greatest album I do think lyrically its pretty
damn cheesy...but 4 the time being I am really digging Mr. Goodnight
(despite the rap), Chelsea Rogers Somewhere Here on Earth. The rest will
have to grow on me. I don't always expect perfection from Prince. At least
its something new to listen to.U all ain't never satisfied!! BTW - I
don't think the 3121 perfume smells like an old lady but its a damn weak
scent.

SonyBMG Music Entertainment uses an ad agency, Universal-McCann in New York,
to place interactive (online) ads for their releases. They placed ads for
Planet Earth beginning last week. top search is a huge advertising
business. Top search results are often bought. One of the only cases where
this is NOT true is when you do a search for NPNY. Unless, of course,
Derek has some marketing budget he hasn't disclosed.

Moderator: Well npny.net comes before NPNY.org the last time I searched
so whoever runs Nurse Practitioner of NY most have a better budget :-)

No, they differentiate between a search that says Prince and one that says
Prince Charles. Since his album was just released, I can't imagine it is a
coincidence and people are just randomly searching about the word prince. No
biggie; just interesting.

Moderator: Cool, Google Trends doesn't show a spike in Prince activity
