You didn't update your system before you started, did you?
OI forces consistency of all packages. Messages like you got are
typically from an out-of-date system.
So, update your system first:
pfexec pkg update -v
And then reboot:
pfexec init 6
After that your 3rd step should work.

Hi,
my emacs troubles me by not showing some graphics files correctly. Some
graphics work, some will only be shown as some red dots on a black
background.
This doesn't seem to be related to the graphics type. Both, png and jpeg
have working and non-working examples.
