It looks surprisingly nice at ISO 125, though at high ISO they've got a metric
assload of noise reduction, making me suspect that the image is an in camera
jpeg rather than raw.

My initial reaction is total disinterest based solely on sensor size. Then
again, three years ago I thought that a 24x36 sensor was necessary for the
performance of the K-5. When the mac was introduced the User Interface was
several years ahead of affordable silicon with the processing power needed to
run it, so by the time that processor technology caught up, they pretty much
owned the market of folks who needed/wanted that style of UI.

I suspect that Pentax has done something similar here. Silicon is on the
ragged edge of being able to support sensor sizes that small and still get
acceptable quality, but in a few years when sensor technology catches up,
they'll have had a big head start in this niche market. My FZ50 did fine at
low ISO, and it seems from the sample shots the Q will also. When it comes to
low ISO, I was happy for decades never shooting over ISO 400, and usually
shooting ISO 25-125.

I will do my best to keep an open mind about this camera. It doesn't
immediately threaten my fiscal responsibility, but I can see potential uses for
it. The sensor 1/2.3 is a little bit smaller than the powershot G12 1/1.7
(WTF is it with these bizzare fractional inch sensor sizes, why not just use
mm?), so I can see it as a compact with interchangeable lenses, rather than a
primary camera with a minuscule sensor. My money is on Godfrey I shot with a
Minox for years DiGiorgi to be the first on the list with one.

Re: New Pentax Q Compact camera system

2011-06-23 Thread Miserere
Mike Johnston had the inside scoop and mentions that the name probably
refers to the Queen in playing cards, because the K mount referred to
the King:

http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2011/06/qsystem.html

This worries me, because the APS-C mirrorless coming in the (Northern
Hemisphere) Autumn might feature a new J mount...which would make it,
you guessed it, the Joker!

If they're going to stick to the card allusions, I would release the
camera system in all-black only and call the new mount the AOS (Ace Of
Spades) Mount. Needless to say, all the advertising would be done by
Lemmy:

http://www.metal-rules.com/metalnews/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Lemmy_poster.jpg

I'm actually being a lot more serious than any of you is giving me credit for.

from some (reserved) flash fill.
This photo jumped out at me from the many I took that day. In
analyzing WHY I like it, I think the subtlest reason I like it is the
gentle (and elongated) S shaped lines that repeat all over the
image.

I think it looks incredibly cheap (except it's anything but).
And may I just say: A 5.5x crop factor? That would make an 10mm focal
length lens the 35mm equiv. of 55mm. (Yes, I got an A in math).
Hope you don't like wide angle!

I don't see how crop factor is even relevant in a camera that doesn't
use K-mount lenses.

pictures, so I've visualized the size, but I'd very much like to hold it in
hand and see what the pictures are like. And it will be interesting if the
mirrorless K series does, in fact, break for fall. I'll check that out as

I love Frank's sig: Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri
Cartier-Bresson

yet there is little that exceeds sharpness as the mark of a great
optical design.
There have been several lenses that have been claimed to be the
sharpest in the Pentax stable, and others beyond Pentax (Zeiss
probably most often mentioned).

So I thought I would ask PDML members for their opinions on which lens
(or lenses) they would rank as the sharpest in their stable:
Overall
and
Wide Open

I do not have a GREAT collection of lenses from which to choose, but I
would have to say that mine right now, at least the sharpest wide open
is the Tele-Takumar 200mm f5.6. In addition to sharpness it has great
color and contrast. I love that lens. I have two lenses on the way
that might rival it (we'll have to see)... a Vivitar Series 1 28-90mm
f2.8-3.5 and a screwmount S-M-C Takumar 135mm f2.5 (version 2). The
latter is definitely not the sharpest wide open (but acceptably so)
but is often mentioned as one of the finest 135mm lenses in the known
universe.

What say you?

Re: New Pentax Q Compact camera system

Despite the explanations given in the TOP blog post:
http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2011/06/qsystem.html
 ,
I do not agree with the idea of that small sensor and slow lenses.
Yes, it can be used, but it's a trade-off that doesn't seem to be
stipulated by the size of the camera (as it usually happens in the
ultra-compact PS cameras).

What's the point over traditional PS format?
Just to show off that you have changeable lenses?
I guess, I am not a Japanese (in the sense described in the blog).

I am just not sure what this camera offers over, say Canon S95 (S90),
that I've been considering after seeing the high quality of the photos
Rob gets with it.
That camera has a small size, large aperture for the zoom lens, good
high-ISO performance, and pretty much the rest of the functionality
that the new Q-camera has, except for the interchangeable lenses.
But S-95 is also more compact, and fits easily in a small pocket.

Cheers!

Igor

PS. Marketing statements like The world's smallest and lightest
digital interchangeable lens system camera, as of June 15, 2011
initiate two reactions (in me):
1. My K-7 is the best of all the digital Pentax SLRs typically
located in my house.
2. The old parody slogan like: Our microchips are largest in the world.

It definitely has the classic advantage of being able to replace the lens
without having to buy a whole new camera. It also has the modern advantage of
allowing you to upgrade the sensor (body) without having to replace the glass.

It would sure be fun to have an adapter so that I could put it on the back of
my bigma, or for that matter my 300/2.8, especially if it works with the GPS

Pentax obviously thinks it is relevant, which is why their Q lenses
have both the actual focal length printed on the front and also the

Yes, it can be used, but it's a trade-off that doesn't seem to be

What's the point over traditional PS format?
Just to show off that you have changeable lenses?
I guess, I am not a Japanese (in the sense described in the blog).

I am just not sure what this camera offers over, say Canon S95 (S90),

Rob gets with it.
That camera has a small size, large aperture for the zoom lens, good
high-ISO performance, and pretty much the rest of the functionality
that the new Q-camera has, except for the interchangeable lenses.
But S-95 is also more compact, and fits easily in a small pocket.

Cheers!

PS. Marketing statements like The world's smallest and lightest

initiate two reactions (in me):
1. My K-7 is the best of all the digital Pentax SLRs typically
located in my house.
2. The old parody slogan like: Our microchips are largest in the world.

This comment confuses me. Crop factor is relevant because most people

 equivalents.
Pentax obviously thinks it is relevant, which is why their Q lenses
have both the actual focal length printed on the front and also the
35mm camera focal length equivalent (which is the focal length of the
lens multipled by the crop factor).

If you can't mount a 35mm-format lens on the thing, knowing the crop
factor per se isn't that useful. As you say, the lenses are marked
with the 35mm-equivalent focal lengths, which is more useful. (By
comparison: If you own a random digicam, do you know its crop
factor? Or just its 35mm-equivalent focal length range?)

What I found confusing about your previous comment was the hope you
don't like wide angle part. If you're not maintaining backwards
compatibility with a previous mount (with a fixed registration
distance) there's nothing hard about making wide-angle lenses.
Especially on a camera with no mirror box at all.

It's become my workhorse lens. I've been doing portrait shooting
(outdoor corporate headshots this morning) and for that it has the right
combo of lightness (beats the DA* 50-135 for that), speed (1.4 vs 2.8)
and that portrait lens pleasant softness attributed to the classic
85mm Pentax glass.

I also use it as my default carry. I'm going to some sort of local arts

It's very very sharp, but I can't give you a comparison as I've never

As for the whole glass sharpness comparison thing, I have to agree with

use it for, even the original kit lenses I got with the K100D. I have a
