Advice for Selling Gear

2021-05-10 Thread Doug Franklin

Howdy, folks,

It's been several years since I was active in the group, but I've been
superficially keeping up. My inactivity is mainly because I haven't
been doing as much shooting as I used to. And that's why I'm posting
today. I have some gear I'd like to sell, and I'm seeking the advice of
the group as to the best processes to use. Most of the stuff I want to
sell is older gear, that used to have collector value, but might not,
anymore. For example, I have an original SMCP 400/5.6
auto-meter-but-nothing-else with case, and an LX with prisms.
Definitely not mint. :)

Thanks for your help!

Re: Printing

2019-09-04 Thread Doug Franklin
I haven't posted to the group in several years, but I've been following.
On this topic, maybe I have some information to offer. I recently had
reason to try the "Fracture" service that most of you (in North America,
at least) have probably already seen advertised
(https://fractureme.com). I had reason recently to try them out.
Unfortunately, the original I had to work with was less than optimal.
The best I could do after cropping was about 6" x 8" at 100 dpi. I must
say that I was impressed with what they were able to do with that. I'm
not sure I could've done better with a local high quality photo printer
on paper. I'm looking forward to trying them again with a better
(higher resolution) original. I will admit that ICC profiles weren't an
issue for that print (I didn't have them), but (a) the result was as
color correct as I could've asked, lacking the profile and (b) it will
be something I'm looking hard at on the next one. But there will
definitely be more. From my limited test, 9/10, would buy again.

They will offer discounts (usually 20% off) from time to time when you get on

Subject: Printing

I have never printed a single photo. I'd like to give it a try. With this image, just
as a test:

 It’s 2.5 MB, 4032 x 2268 pixels

I’ve checked out printing services via this review:

AdoramaPix and Nations Photo Lab appealed. But I see printing is now available via
Flickr. Thought I’d give it a try.

Wondering about a 10 x 20 or 12 x 24 paper print, lustre finish. With an image
this size, what do you think?

Also interested in comparison of Flickr to other printing services, e.g.,
AdoramaPix, Nations Photo Lab, or other.

Thanks,

Usually, when that's done, you're still able to see where the decals
were, the teardrop A-pillar lamp is still there, and you can see shadows
of the door badges. They don't repaint, and often don't even give the
car a washing. At least that's been the case with all of the ones I've
seen (three or four dozen over the years). I don't see any of that in
the photo, but it's a fairly small photo, too.

Yep, based on the photo, that one was part of an official buy. For
those who don't know, police departments often get their cars in batches
from the manufacturers, then send them to a cop prep shop to fit them
out to local department specs. This looks like someone told the cop
prep shop just leave the decals off a few. Maybe they wanted the

The BBC television show Top Gear recently (this year, I think) did a
good episode on post war micro cars that includes quite a few of
these. Actually, it wasn't Top Gear itself, but rather James May,
only. The title of the series of shows is Cars of the People, and
episode 2 is the one with micro cars. There's also a Top Gear episode
about the Peel P50 (?) and the BMW Isetta, and several including Reliant

It was a group assembly aircraft. The assembly aircraft left the base
first, and circled for the attacking aircraft to form up on. When the
formations were in order, the attack headed to the target and the
assembly aircraft returned to base. Different groups painted their
assembly aircraft in different highly visible and recognizable paint

What photos are you losing because your gear isn't performing
well enough, or because it doesn't have a feature that you need?
And in what situations does this present itself? If there is a
work around, what do you need to do to get the shot?

The two main ones for me are AF speed (and reliable locking), and buffer
size.

Occasionally, shooting auto racing, there are enough different shots
close enough together that I fill the K-10Ds buffer (I haven't upgraded
from there yet), even with fast-ish (20 MB/sec) SD cards. The only
thing I know to do technically to work around the problem is to always
reformat my SD cards rather than simply deleting all of the files. But I
doubt that really makes an appreciable difference.

To work around AF speed, I mostly use full manual mode with prefocus
zones and DoF, just as if I was using my LX. If I'm shooting with the
Sigma APO 400/5.6 Macro, or a pre-F Pentax lens, I can use trap focus.
Trapping seems to take a lot of decision paths out of the AF logic, but
it still misses occasionally.

And it really hurts when trying to capture a developing action, like an
on-track incident, and both get in the way of the same series of shots.

I wouldn't mind faster lock time, either.

Most homeowner's policies will cover you up to some number of dollars

cameras, guns, coin collections, etc. Above that limit, they want the
photos/videos, and will work out a rider on the policy for you. The
added cost is often only a handful of dollars a year. At least that's

never in human history have major portions of populations, via

If I understand the argument correctly, it's about expectation of
privacy. The argument seems to go along the lines of how, outside
fairly recent Western societies, privacy didn't really exist due to the

It's not to me. And certainly not the difference between a $200 or $300
normal i7 versus the $1000 extreme versions. I doubt you'd notice
any difference in daily operations for photo management and editing.

More RAM? I think that could make a noticeable difference. 16G vs 24G
vs 32G? I have no idea other than that more could be better but also
possibly overkill.

You might be right. I haven't used the Adobe products in some time, but
working with 4k x 3k scans of 35mm frames, back when I did use them,
Photoshop would eat swap space like a dog in an Alpo bag if I did much
at all with the image.

Actually, I'll change my mind a bit, and suggest getting one with some
SSD for swap (desktop) or for main storage (laptop) rather than the
extra 16GB of memory.

I haven't researched the mSATA drive stuff that's available. Can
someone explain what that means?

Can't help there. I've used SATA and eSATA but not mSATA.

My gut tells me that in addition to CPU, RAM and SSD drives are the
items that will enhance performance as far as speed is concerned. The
slowest component in a system will drag down all other others.

Completely agree, I'm just suggesting that RAM and SSD (I/O speed) will
have a bigger impact than the difference between a Core i5, Core i7, or
AMD Bulldozer CPU.

Anyway, my recollection is that TrueType was a method of minutely smoothing

what you knew to make room for FaceBook timelines and Netflix streaming. Gagh.

TrueType character forms are composed of a set of vectors on (IIRC) a
2048 x 2048 coordinate grid, like a lot of font description languages.
One place TT gets it's umph is that it also includes a robust hinting
language to take care of things like the lumps that happen when that
huge grid is transformed to a much smaller one on the output device. It
also helps the font designer do things like make sure that the vertical
stems in all of the letters end up the same width, regardless of where
they fall in the mapping of the character coordinate system to the
page coordinate system.

While I can't dispute his other points about film being beloved and

available scanner resolution and film grain size, I'm pretty sure that
pixels have met and exceeded film for resolution.

My experiences with scanning 35mm negatives at 4000 dpi lead me to
believe that a 4000 dpi pixel and an average film grain are of
approximately the same size (same order of magnitude). However, the
pixels are arranged in a grid, while the grains appear stochastically in
the emulsion.

Embedded Programming

2012-07-23 Thread Doug Franklin
Just for giggles, anyone on the list interested in playing with Arduino
stuff? I've got one running a 9-axis position/rate capture system. I'm
trying to get GPS working with it, but either I'm an idiot or I have a
broken integration or a broken GPS receiver. But I'll fix it ... or
metaphorically beat on someone until they send me a replacement.
