Most definitely, the battery pack provides power much longer than the CR2's,
and of course the AA batteries are both cheaper and easier to find. It adds
weight and height, which some people do not like, but I do find it balances
well with longer lenses.

Almost always: I walk to the post office to get the mail just about
every day, and always carry a camera. I also have one in the car all
the time, even if I am not carrying 'the bag'. I probably would not
take one on walks of five minutes or less, though.

nearly useless on most zoom lenses.
In practice, if I want or need a particular DOF in a shot, I will set
an appropriate aperture and focus a little before or behind the main
subject, as needed. Works pretty well all the time!
