Re: My new Macro - a lemon.
Of course it does - it´s simple geometry - when a prime lens is extended while focusing close the focal length increases. If it were an internal focusing zoom, it would focus close by decreasing the focal length - and then you would be complaining that it does not have the indicated focal length in the near range. Those are the options, you choose. About the dust - what magnification ratios do you use - I´d say that in order to really show in images the dust inside the lens the magnification must be rather extreme. All the best! Now that I have a digital camera, and it doesn't cost me a bit extra to shoot 3 or 400 pictures, I occasionally go riding through town shooting a picture at every turn or at each... say 50 yards. People who don't know me can choose to believe what they will. In the process of 35+ years of writing about photography and doing my own nude photography for books, magazines, and galleries, I have stepped on some toes and made some enemies. I changed lawyers early this year, and my new legal team asked me to take down my updates from my web site and not to put up any new ones, and I have full confidence in their decisions. If Pentax actually produced and marketed it, they were the first in the FF DSLR market which was apparently their intention. snip Both Pentax and Kyocera/Contax used the same Philips sensor. Kyocera/Contax hastened the product and actually started marketing it. It was a miserable failure. Not only was the whole kit too big, but the high ISO noise was almost making the camera unusable (IIRC, too much noise beyond 400 etc). At the same time, Pentax were aware of the Kyocera's problem although they did not have that problem, and was about to market it. Well, everybody thought so. But in the last minute, I believe they essentially chickened out. But their cameras were good working models and some of them are still being used in-house for real use. It was solely a marketing decision. It was just too expensive and Pentax did not have the paying market. They had to create it to sell their product in any quantity. Killing the project may or may not have been a good thing to Pentax. If they ever marketed it, they either encountered an instant death caused by Canon, or may have built further on it, in spite of the challenge, simply because they made a head start. But watching the demise of Kyocera/Contax, the killing of the project was probably prudent and right. If Pentax knew what they know now about this chaotic DSLR market today, they certainly would not have even thought about making the FF DSLR. Now the sensor cost is coming down, and P might have found a good source or partner in the sensor supply (are they serious about the in-house FAB which is rumoured from time to time?). snip Cheers, Ken

Re: Pentax Profits Fall 42%
OK - that might indeed be the case. Actually when I now try to think what actually was said at the time - and it was a few years back - I do not remember anything concrete, only that the quality of the Philips chip was not good and the rejection rate was very, very high. But I may be wrong again. The Contax brand is dying - film and digital - the last one to die will be the 645 in December, according to PopPhoto. All the best! I knew for the fact that Pentax solved the problem when Kyocera could not, because a well-known Pentax person disclosed that Kyocera approached Pentax for help. This was just before Kyocera went ahead releasing the product. He did not elaborate what was discussed with Kyocera or what had transpired after the meeting, but it was obvious that Pentax respectfully declined the help, because Kyocera went ahead marketing their cameras right after that. I do not remember how high an ISO Kyocera and Pentax went up but I thought Kyocera only went up to ISO400 (barely) and still had some trouble there while Pentax went up to at least ISO800 (maybe more) with practically no noise. My speculation was that Kyocera/Contax might have taken a risk, thinking that the first in the market, FF and Contax brand should overcome the initial difficulty. IIRC, the price of the body at the time was approaching $10K and it was surprising that they actually sold few of those, although it was the literal fire sale toward the end of its life. What a way to end the brave challenge! Their camera was so big and heavy while MZD was very compact and working. But in hindsight, the fact that Kyocera/Contax had to fold up the digicam business altogether (film camera too?, I am not sure) indicated that they really did not have the technical ability and prowess to survive the cut-throat competition and sustain the business. Interesting case. Cheers, Ken

Re: LX Malfunction
Mine neeeded at least about 2 f-stops of underexposure to fire the flash, even if the X-LED illuminated - which it did like you say. All the best! Of course - camera in auto mode. The shutter speed can still be selected manually. The LED for the ambient light exposure still lights in addition to the X Synch (1/75th) LED being lit. Not firing the flash at all was clearly a malfunction - but if the behavior once the dedicated flash is put on is different, maybe that is an upgrade or change made during the repair. Put the flash on the hotshoe, in either TTL or manual mode, and the camera (in auto mode) would light up the red LED by 1/75 indicating that a dedicated flash was present. But then - it would not trip the flash and it would not fire at 1/75th (it would fire at whatever shutter speed metered for the scene.) I was using an AF280T flash. The camera did not get jostled or anything - this just started happening (at the bottom of a mineshaft in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, if I remember correctly...) The flash was fine on other cameras. It lead to one of several trips to Colorado for the camera. After getting the this and the other bugs fixed, it works fine now (and has for at least a couple of years.) Good luck -

What shutter speed the camera was offering? Was it close to the sync speed 1/60? Sometimes the camera shows a speed that should require triggering of the flash but then decides against it when you take the actual picture. At least mine did. Mildly annoying. All the best! Raimo K Personal photography homepage at: http://www.uusikaupunki.fi/~raikorho Thanks for the thought, Raimo, but knowing that the LX will disable, or choose not to use the flash if there's enough light for an exposure above the flash synch, I closed down the aperture so that the indicated shutter speed was way down below flash synch (with the red light glowing at flash synch speed, to indicate that the body sensed the flash was attached and charged).
