Hi all,

Alex - Thanks! I also mentioned them on
http://picolisp.com/wiki/?interfacing and http://picolisp.com/wiki/?web,
though a bit of scrolling is needed for the latter.

Good to mention them on the Documentation page too, thanks Olaf. Looks
great to me.

And please, if anything is missing or anyone has created new stuff, find a
spot for it! No need to ask for permission.
http://picolisp.com/wiki/?categories is a great spot for misc.
code/tutorials (though I'm now realizing I left that page looking pretty
rough). Also the 'Repositories' section on the main documentation page, or
any of the more specific pages (Web Dev, Database, Embedded,
Metaprogramming, etc.)

I also added Mike Pechkin's 'tankfeeder' repo to the Documentation Page and
made a new 'cryptography' section on the categories page.

Cheers,
Erik

Hi all,

Alex - nice work! This will be very helpful for newcomers.

Chri - Thanks for the recommendations. Share Tech is really cool, and
I think it compliments 'Exo' (the header font) very well. I'm very fond
of Inconsolata as well (it's been my terminal font a couple years now).
So those are my favorites.

Regarding A/B testing... I'll confess I've never done any before. This
is my first project to make it to production, if you will. Do you have
a favorite set of tools or methods for that?

Done! :)

The Wiki search functionality now also displays links to the references
and sources.

Usage:

You can enter one or two symbols.

For one, it tries to look up the reference, and displays "REF: "
with a link to the reference, and then looks up the source and displays
"SRC: " with a link to the source.

For two, it should be a method and a class, and it displays
"SRC: meth> +Class" with a link to the source.

Note that the server must be started in debug mode, i.e. with a '+' at
the end of the command line.

@Erik: The list of search results is always displayed in upper case.
This must be due to the CSS, as in w3m the names appear normally. Do you
think this can be changed? The case of symbols is significant in
PicoLisp.

Re: Redesigned Wiki is Live

2016-03-25 Thread Erik Gustafson
Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback and kind words! I'll try to address all in this
mail,
starting with the common themes.

Wiki Search
---
I agree, everything about this is awkward. I'll play around with the CSS to
address the aesthetic issues that Bene raised. Both the input bar and
button
need more padding, as well. As Jon pointed out, the way results are returned
(by expanding the 'menu' div) is less than desirable for anything more than
a
couple results. I'll try out some of his suggestions.

Regarding the search results...

@Vid - In order to return results from the reference (and other "outside"
material) we would need to port all that to wiki articles. My fear is that
this would make the search results even longer and more absurd. It would
also
be a lot of work to port, though I suppose a script could be written to do
the dirty work. Maybe it would be better to just make it clear that the
reference - or simply (doc 'whatever) - is the best way to access that type
of documentation?

PL Logos

The new logo is under the same license as PicoLisp. I would love nothing
more
than it to be included on a site/product that's made with PicoLisp. That
would
only help exposure, in my opinion. Any reason why this shouldn't be
permitted?
I actually created a "Powered by PicoLisp" specifically for that, but it
hasn't been put on the new site yet.

I'll post an archive to the list with all the logos I have - black, white,
color, and a handful of sizes of each ranging from small to obnoxiously
large.
"Powered by" sticker will be included too.

I totally overlooked the favicon! I'll whip one up and send it to Alex.

Google Fonts

This was simply out of convenience for me. I asked a bunch of people who
are
way more into front-end/UI stuff than I am about finding/using nice
typography
on a website. The consensus was "Just use Google fonts, it's super easy."
So
I did.

Honestly, I'm pretty indifferent to the tracking. I think the selected
fonts
add a lot of character (for the headers) and increase readability (for the
body copy). I'll leave this one up to Alex. If it's problematic, feel free
to
remove them from 'main.l'. I may or may not try to find another way to get
the
desired results then. Though a quick search returned this,

   https://github.com/majodev/google-webfonts-helper

so maybe it isn't that hard to self-host.

Page-load is a non-issue until we really hit it big time ;)

The Home Page
-
It's not there yet. I've gotten some valuable feedback from friends and
programmers (folks I would love to see get into PicoLisp). The general
theme
of the feedback was that there is too much text, not enough super simple
code
examples (as Vid pointed out, what the heck does 'maxi' do?), and no call
to
action.

The sole function of the homepage should be to get someone who knows
nothing
of PL to '$ apt-get install picolisp' and get started with a simple
tutorial.
Get them to the documentation page as quickly as possible, as that's where
the actual content is.

All of your suggestions have been noted, and will be included in the
revisions!

Misc. Edits
---
@Jon - Articles and Essays has become a section on the documentation page.
Would you rather have this be it's own page once again? We could then
insert
it under the 'In Detail' section, or back into the main site navigation.

I also started a new page,

   http://picolisp.com/?categories

which now that I think about it, is pretty much the same as the examples
page.
In fact, many of the entries on the examples page have moved there (those
not
directly related to GUI/DB stuff). Would filling that page out with more
examples, from rosetta code and other repo's, serve that end? It is also
very
close to the top of the documentation page and should be easily
discoverable.

Thanks everyone,
Erik

Re: Redesigned Wiki is Live

2016-03-25 Thread Jon Kleiser
Hi Erik,

Great job! There is one feature I miss, however, and that’s the old “section
links” that used to be on the left hand side. I can now use the search function
to find the “sections”, but that is too cumbersome. I think there should be
quick links for at least these two:

Articles & Essays http://picolisp.com/wiki/?articles
Examples http://picolisp.com/wiki/?examples

When I search for “examples”, the long list of Search results makes the page
header very high, high enough to contain all the search results. That’s not
very elegant. I think the “searchGrp” div should be “floating” above the “menu”
div, like a drop-down. It could also have a clickable X in the upper right
corner so one could make it go away.

I also think the main text color (#666) is somewhat too light. For me, #333
looks better.

True, its the font, not the CSS.

> retrieved the fonts for another website.

My understanding of the theory:
- That is only a slight speed up on the first visit.
- For all cdr visits the browser makes GET/HEAD and receives a 304 Not Modified.

I checked with Firefox DevTools (F12 -> Network Tab):
- in my case, the font file is actually delivered every time (200, not 304
response)
- the first two font requests "css?family=Exo:500,300" and
"css?family=Open+Sans:300,300italic,400,600,600italic" are each taking around
80-90 ms,
these requests that take the longest together with "js.l" delivered from
picolisp.com, but "js.l" is like 270 times bigger
- so in my case, the Google CDN is not speeding up anything, I would guess the
lisp webserver might actually be faster, though your mileage might vary
depending on your network distance to the picolisp.com server
- testing with Firefox DevTools, I see a 404 Not found for
"http://picolisp.com/wiki/wiki/css/typhography.css;, but I'm not sure where
this one is linked in the page

Loading Performance:
- Nowadays, especially with the client-heavy "stylish" websites, the bottleneck
is usually the Rendering, not the network (can be different for mobile network)
- I check this with the Firefox PlugIn "app.telemetry Page Speed Monitor",
according to that:
-- Page fully loaded after 6030ms
-- 5633 ms of that is spent in Processing (Rendering), not in network
(- yep, I've got fast internet, so your mileage could differ, but I think the
overall pattern will most likely be the same)

Summary:
- Doesn't look like picolisp.com is benefiting from Google CDN.
- picolisp.com is not page with much traffic, so CDN is not needed (ok, maybe
when we get slashdotted, but then the fonts will not make much a difference)
- in my personal experience, picolisp webserver is usually vastly faster
compared to other dynamic website stacks (php, python, ruby...), though I don't
have real benchmark data to prove this (so might be wrong)

beneroth

Re: Redesigned Wiki is Live

I can't add any more to the discussion (especially beyond bene), but I
still wanted to drop a line and say, thank you! It's a pleasure to
browse the new-look site.

All the best, --Rick.

Re: Redesigned Wiki is Live

2016-03-24 Thread Vidyuth Kini
Dear Erik,
Firstly the site looks really nice now, great look, I love it.
However I found that while using the search dialog the result is not always
that useful.
For example you have the function maxi in the sample code.
When I search for that function in search, the result doesn't give me anything
useful, like the definition or file it is defined in, etc...
One has to find the picolisp ref page and the search in there.
Is there a way to incorporate that so the the search dialog in the wiki could
return the result.
Thanks,
Vid

Hi List,

I'm very excited to announce that the redesigned PicoLisp
wiki is now running on the server! Have a look:

   http://picolisp.com
In my (slightly biased) opinion, PicoLisp has one of the
coolest programming language websites out there now. It's
sleek and modern and should be very accessible from any
device. Changes to the code base were minimal (mostly
CSS), so it still works great with text-based browsers
as well.

But don't let the new paint job fool you. The wiki has
much more to offer! I spent a lot of time going through
the mail archives, finding the most helpful threads and
turning them into new articles. I've tried to organize
the documentation to be most helpful to newcomers, to
set them on a clear path from beginner to lisp wizard.

I'd love any feedback. How's the design feel? The copy?
I tried my best to incorporate all the feedback I got
from the initial homepage mockup I posted a few months
ago.

Note that there are still some rough spots in some of
the articles/pages. I plan to fill that out in the
coming weeks and continue to refine the content,
hopefully with your help! As such, please hold off on
posting to Reddit, HN, etc. for a bit. And if there is
anything that seems to be missing, or you'd like to find
a spot for something you've been working, let me know.

So thanks to all of you for the great discussion over
the years! It's been a lot fun and I've learned a ton.
Finally, many thanks to Alex, not only for helping me
better understand the wiki and put it back together,
but for PicoLisp in general.

Cheers y'all,
Erik
