With the loss of fishbone (which had its own problems on 7.5.n but was

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Touch 'Play All' on CB doesn't work

2011-08-11 Thread PasTim

If I try to Play All on a Custom Browse menu using the Touch screen, it
works on the remote control (using the play button), but it does not
work on the Touch screen. I can select and play individual tracks using
the screen, but not Play All. (On Play All there is also no '' at the
far right but I think that has been true for some time.) The web
interface works as normal.

This is a relatively new issue, although since I normally use the
remote or web interface it may have been around for a few weeks.

I am on the latest of everything - Touch firmware 7.6.1 9471, SB 7.6.1
33033, Custom Browse 2.11.3411.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Thanks for supporting third party developers!

2011-08-11 Thread PasTim

Most of the plugins I use are Erland's, and I use them all the time. I
really do appreciate the work people like him put in, especially with
the apparently unannounced release of the flaky 7.6.0.

I have time on my hands, so I can play around with stuff, and don't get
too excited when things don't work first time. I also use the forum, and
found Erland's vital commentary on issues with 7.6.0 in time to make use
of the information.

However, I am very concerned that most 'normal' users (i.e. people who
expect stuff to work when they plug it in) will have been put off by
7.6 (whether they use 3rd party plugins or not) and will quickly move
to other more stable and reliable kit. The Logitech Squeezebox could
be on a slippery downward slope if they are not careful, which would be
a great shame.

I'll help with beta testing if asked (PM if needed), provided it
doesn't mean rescanning my library too often (my custom scan is around
2 hours at present and I don't want to do that too often, being someone
who turns their PC off at night). My set-up is a 64 bit Windows 7 PC
with wired Touch, all on latest 7.6.1 as of this morning.

to go back SB 7.5.n frequently to allow people to play tracks whilst
scanning. My experience thus far is that it is quite impossible to
play anything whilst scanning (base or custom) using SB 7.6. I get no
sound, then rebuffering, restarting, and so on.

It is very noticeable using 7.6 that the the squeezebox service is now
running at a constant steady pace (about 9-10% CPU on my PC) whilst
custom scanning. It used to scan in short bursts of a few seconds.

If feasible (optionally?), I'd much rather all scans ran as fast as
possible and I'll forgo listening to SB whilst it is scanning.
SB sometimes decides to rescan without me telling it to, usually when I
have added a track and played it via Music Folder. I wish it wouldn't,
but the issue I have here is that I then get a custom scan which takes
2 hours. During this time I cannot play anything. This is very
different from 7.5.n, when I could play tracks whilst custom scanning.

I had been hoping for faster Custom Scans in 7.6. What we seem to have
now is Custom Scans that are not much quicker than before when playing
music in parallel, but which now don't let you play music at the same
time.

For now I will have to set custom scans to entirely manual and trigger
them only when I want to.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Auto rescan

2011-08-12 Thread PasTim

When I add a file to my library and use Music Folder to find it and play
it, or maybe go back and select another one, SB usually decides to
rescan my library. This means I can't try out my new track for however
long SB decides to scan for since it will not respond.

This is driving me crackers. I want to be in control - not be unable
to listen to my stuff for 10-15 minutes. I may decide I don't like the
track and ditch it. I have been trying out various techniques for
recording LPs, and this SB behaviour is making it a real pain.

Logitech please provide an option to only ever scan on manual request.

I'm currently on SB 7.6.1 33048 (i.e. the newset) due to scanning
problems with earlier releases.

2011-08-12 Thread PasTim

I am now on 7.6.1 - r33048, and ran a full scan (11 minutes - getting
quicker) and then (manually) a custom scan.

The custom scan is now much quicker - around 1 hour for my 14,500
tracks (with 4 new tags). I can live quite happily with not playing
anything for this time, provided I can control when it happens, which I
can.

There don't seem to be any log entries for the Custom Scan, which
surprised me (and I did stop/restart SB to make sure), but I can live
without assuming that if something fails it will be logged.

So it might be solved sometime in the future but it's unlikely to be
 solved in the near future.
I do wonder why the latest version doesn't allow one to play tracks
while custom scanning, but that's only relatively idle interest now
since my custom scans are recently down to an 1 hour. I'm content that
I can control when Custom Scans take place (unlike SB scans). People

I'm quite sure you have more useful things to do with your spare time

Do I understand correctly that the issue is that you can play music but
gets very choppy and isn't possible to listen to ?

If so, I'll have to test it in my own environment and see if it would
be possible to somehow lower the priority of the background scanning if
music is playing. The result will probably be that the scanning when
playing music will take more time time but the advantage is that you
can enjoy music while it's playing and this is probably preferred by
 most users.
When I try to play music during a custom scan it is difficult to get
the server to respond to my request, and then the Toucb starts
buffering and rebuffering, stops, stutters and so on.

Since my custom scan is now quite quick, and I can run it only when I
want, I don't mind this. However, others, as you say, may find this a
problem.

I don't know if the priorities in the performance settings affect this.
What priority does the custom scan take? Scanner or server? I have the
server on High (-16) and the scanner on -12.

I'm on Windows 7 64 bit.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse menus slow to show list

2011-08-13 Thread PasTim

Since 7.6.0 I have found that, quite often, my CB menus can take one or
two minutes to load (web GUI or Touch). This is long enough that the
Touch complains and asks to reconnect.

I'm using Erland's Classical menus, such as Works by Composer.

It is as if the system is slowly loading the whole lot into memory
before showing any items. Having done this it's OK for a while, but
then something happens that makes it slow again.

I limit my lists to 100 items, and am using the High Memory performance
setting.

I haven't managed to do a detailed set of tests yet. There are several
things I could look at if it would be useful (eg looking at CPU disc
loads when I do this).

I am on Windows 7 64 bit, SB 7.6.1 - 33048.

I have turned off all automatic Custom Scans, and now run them manually
when I need to. I had to do this because I quite often add tracks and
play them straight away (via Music Folders) to make sure they are OK.
SBS does a short scan which runs OK, but then if Custom Scan is
configured to kick in after an SBS scan it stops SBS from responding or
being able to play music.

Yes, as I said above, I am using that setting.

I did a couple more tests. After installing the latest nightly (to see
if anything had changed which might help) and runniong a full custom

Having returned to my PC, without stopping/starting the server, and

It seems there's some sort of caching and cache clean-up going on

It's supposed to only do the synchronization/refresh operation and that
seems to take about 4 minutes in your system according to these logs.

I understand 4 minutes is still too much at startup but if it really
does a 2 hour rescan at startup if you enable the Startup refresh
option I like to know because then there might be more serious issues
in SBS which Logitech needs to solve.
I confess to being a little confused. I have always run with the 1st
two Custom Scan 'refresh' options turned off. I had assumed these were
for scanning. I had not appreciated that a refresh was something
different. I have now turned them on.

I stopped restarted SB - no Custom Scan message. I checked I had
saved the options. I had. I rebooted the PC (which restarts SB as a
service). Still no Custom Scan messages.

I tried using one of the menus that I reported elsewhere as being slow
first time. They were quick enough (10 seconds, not 60 or more).

So maybe I now understand what a 'refresh' is - it reads the tags so
that it can respond to requests quickly.

Why there is no log message I don't know. Do you want me to turn on
more logging?

I have 'Warn' on the customscan log.

I tried setting it to 'Info'. I saved it, moved to another page, went
back to the logging page and checked it was at Info. So far so good.

I stopped and restarted SBS. No Custom Scan messages, and the logging
level had been reset to warn. I tried this twice. Does SBS always
reset these? If so, there is no way I can change it for a restart.

I have now found the following using the 'info' setting. It puzzles be

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Scan and 7.6

2011-08-17 Thread PasTim

Seeking to resolve some small part of my ignorance, I looked up a bit on
Musicbrainz. I still don't really understand it. However, I tripped
over MusicIP on the same site. Hmm, I thought. I have that plugin
disabled (since I tend to disable stuff I don't use). I wonder if

Log follows with MusicIP plugin enabled. This is very much quicker,
with no change made to my library whatsoever from well before the
restart before the restart for which I reported the previous log.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Scan and 7.6

2011-08-17 Thread PasTim

Sorry - a red herring. I thought I should double check by disabling
MusicIP again and restarting. Scan times were quick, as they were with
that plugin enabled.

So I still have no idea why the earlier log took 4 minutes to do
nothing (Finished updating musicbrainz id's in custom scan track data
based on urls, updated 0 items : It took 247.915691 seconds).

I had a look in the database, and I have no musicbrainz ids on tracks
or contributors.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] SyncOptions glitch

2011-08-20 Thread PasTim

I was playing a track on my Touch, with no other players (software or
hardware) connected, when the track stuttered and stopped. I tried
again with similar results. Looking at the server log, I see about 80
of the log errors below. Looking back over the log this has happened a
few times before, including on the official 7.6.0.release.

I am currently running 7.6.1 r33082.

My SyncOptions settings follow the log:

Any idea what's wrong?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Need help to test Custom Scan with support for new/changed scanning

2011-08-22 Thread PasTim

Erland,

I am eager to try, but events (and PCs) conspire against me. My
internal Hard Disk has given up the ghost after only 8 months, so I am
on my USB backup. I do have another slightly older USB backup as well
(belt and braces) but am a little nervous if it's likely to break
the main database (although I can live with broken trackstat). I'm
also unusually busy (for me) from now until next week and am out
about much of the time.

If you still want help next week I'll give it a go (having first taken
another backup - and hopefully my replacement HD will arrive by then).
I normally only scan Custom and Mixed.

And I should have mentioned I use Custom and Mixed tags, with manual
Ratings tag.

All 'refresh/rescan' options are set to 'Yes'.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom browse menus stopping playback

2011-09-02 Thread PasTim

Custom Browse menus with custom scan items are sometimes very slow to
load.

Sometimes they are so slow (1 or 2 minutes) and resource intensive that
if selecting from the Touch, the Touch thinks the connection has been
lost. Sometimes, if I am playing something at the same time as looking
for something new, playback stops and resumes when the menu is
returned.

If I have to live with slow menus I will, but I can't live with
playback stopping when perusing the menus.

Most of my menus are based on the suggested Custom Scan menus for
classical, with additions. The problem seems to occur with all of
them. A sample (using the Custom Scan definition of Artist) is at the
end of this post.

Sometimes the menus are quick. I haven't fathomed a pattern. I do
shut my PC down each night, so things do have to be reloaded, but my
impression is that even when I have run a menu once, if I don't run it
for several hours it gets slow again. I wonder if an in-memory copy of
items is getting purged once in a while.

I am on 7.6.1. For Custom Scan I have Startup and Rescan Refresh set
to Yes, Automatic set to No (so I can control when it runs). I haven't
added or changed any music recently. I've about 14,500 tracks on my
PC.

I currently have the performance settings with the Database Memory at
'High', server at -6 Above Normal, scanner at 0. I have very little
artwork.

I am getting close to giving up on 7.6. I suspect I've spent more time
trying to get it work smoothly than listening to my music. This is not
good. I must add that it isn't any fault of 3rd party providers such
as Erland, but Logitech who hung on to the beat for ages and then
sprung the final on everybody unexpectedly. This is a real shame. It
is almost really good, but instability is almost fatal in a consumer
device (unless the name starts with 'i-', for reasons I don't
comprehend).

That's certainly helped this particular menu - Thanks. As you say, it
must be the custom scan based ones that are causing the problem.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom browse menus stopping playback

2011-09-04 Thread PasTim

I did a couple of experiments with the CB menu items based on custom
scan data and similar to 'works for composer' listed in a previous
post.

Right after a full Custom Scan rescan they are all quick, memory usage
around 290M.

When I restarted the next day, the memory usage of the server was much
lower (around 186M). The first run of each menu based on Custom Scan
took a minute or two. Once run, the menu is quick again. Having run
most of my menu items memory usage was up again to around 218M.

Later that day, after several hibernate/restarts, memory before
hibernating was 183M, and after restart was 152M. Menus based on
custom scan data were, once again, slow, although not as slow as after
a full shutdown and restart. Memory usage rose to over 155M after
running each menu.

I have now (today) had to turn off all auto rescan and refresh features
of custom scan since they made my PC's performance become very erratic.
I'm still a bit unclear what 'refresh' does (as opposed to rescan), but
turning it off seems to help general performance.

One hypothesis is that hibernating and restarting a PC loses some form
of in-memory cache of SQLite data for menus based on custom scan data,
which did not seem to happen in SB 7.5.n based on Mysql. However, I
have to say the marginal increase in memory usage after my last
hibernate/restart did not seem that large.

For info:

persist.db is 238MB, persist.db-shm is 32K and persist.db-wal is 86K.
library.db is 34MB, library.db-shm is 32K and library.db-wal is 430K.

In persist.db, my customscan_track_attributes has 257K rows
(customscan_album.. ..contributor are empty). I could extract other
data if useful, or get some extra log data.

I never had performance issues with menus on mysql, but I did have some
issues with the scanning time. 7.6.1 is much quicker scanning, both SB
basic and Custom Scan, which is a great improvement.

And to reiterate the problem of this thread, when a CB menu based on
custom scan is slow, it can be so slow that the Touch loses contact
with the server and any track playing stops (not straight away, but
after 30 seconds to a minute or so).

It would really help me to know if this is a common problem, and if so
whether it is likely to have a resolution anytime soon, or not. I'm
fully aware that Custom Browse and Scan are developed in Erland's own
free time, and that he probably has better things to do.

I'd just like to have some idea so I can decide whether to revert to
7.5.n for now. That would have it's own problems, but not ones that
cause me to scream :)

I tried changing just one Custom tag and doing a 'look for changed'

The SB scan took seconds. Customscan is still running 45 minutes
later. Is that because I didn't change a standard tag as well, or is
there something else going on? I notice there's nothing about the
customscan in the server log for this scan. I'll tweak the log setting

I also noticed that the standard scan details on the basic page did not
show the Customscan phase, unlike it did when I did a full 'clear

I stopped the server, made another trivial change to the same tag,

(I am also up to date on all the other plugins I use).

I changed a custom tag on a track, rescanned for 'changed' only, and it
all worked fine in a minute or 2.

I tried again with a few more changes which didn't seem to 'take' for
some reason, but at least custom scan ran, and ran quickly!

Have you also done something to the custom browse menus that include
custom tags? I may be wrong, but I think they have sped up back to
where they were in 7.5.3-4.

When I get time I'll do a few more tests, but this is definitely a
major step forwards. Thanks!

Some problems with the Alpha Custom Scan, as attached. I'm not sure
what caused them. I was doing a scan for changed music and it hung.
SB wouldn't stop, and the scan never stopped.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse / Scan features interrupting music

2011-10-11 Thread PasTim

With the current versions of CB and CS (the latter being Alpha for
testing but the pukka release version was no different) I'm getting
more breaks in music playing whilst using menus.

For instance, I just tried to go to the Custom Scan menu and select
'Various settings'. My music playing stopped for 20 seconds or so.

As I have reported before, Custom Browse menus which use custom tags
can break music playing for 30 seconds or more (usually after an
initial delay of over 30 seconds), sometimes taking over 1 minute to
show the menu.

My current set-up for Custom scan is that all 'refresh' and 'rescan'
options are set to Yes.

Under 'Performance' I have the High model (4GB memory), server at -6
above normal, scanner at 0 normal.

What else can I try to fix this? It's a problem that doesn't hit me
for a while because I haven't been searching for stuff whilst playing.
Then when I do, and I get long breaks, it is really quite a nuisance.

Am I the only one to have this type of issue? It would be useful to
know since in that case I'll have to dig into my Windows set-up to see
if there's anything causing this.

Yes - both. Note that startup can be very slow (several minutes) if I
have changed something without a rescan.

Is it possible for you to install the Database Query plugin and run its
Custom Scan Statistics report and post the result ? If you have
already posted it earlier, just link to that post.
I'd like to see the number entries for each tag in your library to make
it easier for me to simulate something similar in my own setup.

Attached (in xml format but with .txt extension since the upload
doesn't like .xml).

Does the issues only appear after you have used the system for a while
or do they also happen immediately after a rescan has finished ?
In my system response times are fine after a rescan. It's when I have
stopped SBS, and restarted the PC and then SBS that it is worst.

Do you have automatic rescans enabled in SBS
Settings/Advanced/Performance ? If so, could you try to disable it for
a while to see if that solves the issues ?
Not available on Windows.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse / Scan features interrupting music

2011-10-24 Thread PasTim

My Custom browse menus for custom scan items are currently behaving
well, but initial startup is very low (10 minutes or so). I am
beginning to wonder whether some recent change in custom scan may be
causing the custom scan data to be read into memory at startup, thus
obviating the need for a lot of disc reads and delays when first using
the menus.

This behaviour is OK for me. I'm much happier waiting a while at boot
time than having music interrupted when I'm listening.

I can't be sure that the CB menus are now OK, but they haven't given me
problems for some days now.

I am on the latest versions of all plugins.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse menu variations

2011-11-04 Thread PasTim

I have a lot of Classical music, with 'Work' and 'Movement' tags as
suggested by Erland. Amongst other menus, I have one that shows all
Works for a Composer, and then Artists performing that Work, again as
suggested by Erland.

On accasions I'd like to do this at the Movement level. The problem is
that some Works have Movements, and some don't. In addition, depending
on how I have filed things, a cycle of pieces may have either many
Works and no separate Movements, or one Work with many Movements.

I'd quite like to have a customised menu that showed every Movement, or
if Movement is empty, the Work. I can't work out out to have a CB
customised menu with this type of optionality. Specifically, if no
Movement, use Work instead.

Any ideas anyone?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse menu variations

2011-11-04 Thread PasTim

The combination tag you suggested works well.

I could see that mucking about with the SQL such that there are
different numbers of levels of menus depending on context was going to
be hard.

It occurred to me later that there was another option. My 'song'
Titles are a combination of Work and Movement (with no artist
information). So a simpler option might have been to create a menu:

Composer
Title
(Track)Artist

but I failed to make that work. I think it's because Title is not
recognised as a tag by that type of menu. I imagine I could do the
same trick with custom scan to create a new tag, but I was mildly
surprised to find Title was not one of the standard mixed tag items.
Am I missing something obvious (I usually am)?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Anyone else have problems with 3rd party plugins and DLNA?

2011-11-17 Thread PasTim

I had several problems getting the DLNA part of LMS running, but
eventually got LMS up and running, as admin, with the DLNA media
server, and me logged on as a normal user.

My configuration at this stage was with only those standard plugins I
want, plus multi-library (3rd party). I also had not scanned my proper
music library (since this takes a long time). So I then added the 3rd
party plugins I always use (particularly custom browse and custom scan)
configured these, and configured my full music library, plus photos and
videos. I set off a scan and went away, since custom scan takes an hour
or more on my library.

On return, no LMS Media Server is apparent. I rebooted. Start control
panel as admin, and started LMS. No DLNA Media Server.

I can tell if DLNA is running simply by looking at the Network on
Windows 7. It either shows up asa media device or it doesn't.

Does anyone else have this problem?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse Menus - different behaviours

2012-01-06 Thread PasTim

I have a selection of custom browse menus, all based originally on
Erland's classical music suggestions. When I access these via the
Touch (not the web interface) I see different behaviour patterns, and I
am unsure why. Normally I use a laptop as my controller, but on
occasions I use the Touch via its remote control.

On some menus, pressing a letter on the remote skips to artists /
conductors / composers starting with that letter. On others, it
doesn't.

On some menus, pressing + at some points (I'm not 100% clear on which
ones and where) gives me the option of adding that track, or set of
tracks, or album, to the playlist. On others it appears to show
nothing when at any level other than track.

I apologise that this is a bit vague. I haven't yet ascertained a
pattern to the behaviour.

Is there some fundamental difference between Touch menus based on
standard tags, mixed tags, or custom tags, that I haven't understood?

The three attached xml files (in one zip since the forum upload seems
to fail with xml files) show Works by Composer, Works by WorkArtist
(the prime Artist for a Work consisting of one or many tracks but not
necessarily a whole Album), and Albums by Composer. The first does
not support selection by single letter, the second does. Neither of
the 1st two shows anything when I press + on the remote until I am at a
single track level. The third menu allows use of a letter on the remote
to find composer, and when at Album level supports + on the remote to
add the whole album to the playlist.

What am I missing?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse Menus - different behaviours

2012-01-07 Thread PasTim

Thanks for your very comprehensive reply.

WORKARTIST is a tag I have added in my files.

I thought the 'alpha' meneulink did what you said. However, the
Worksbycomposer menu does not support the single letter selection,
whereas Worksbyworkartist does. I have no idea why.

Looking at the the two xmls I couldn't see a significant difference
(not that odd since the worksartist one was derived from the composer
one).

Once I have resolved this conundrum I'll fix others as you suggest.

With these two menus, the WORKARTIST and COMPOSER are the top level.

I have around 400 composers and 750 workartists, 18K tracks (so far) of
which 15K are classical.

On the Touch, the WORKARTIST menu shows big letters when using the
slidebar, the COMPOSER one does not.

On the web interface they both show A-Z lists at the top (if that is
what you meant by 'page bar')
.

I understand the context problem. I'll just have to use the web
interface (provided my laptop is working and available).

Both these and other similar menus still also cause several minutes
delay when no music can be played when they are first used after
startup. I therefore have no use each one manually when I start up so
that I don't get a delay later in the day when listening to something.
I have 'Yes' in all the custom scan options for refreshes.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse Menus - different behaviours

2012-01-08 Thread PasTim

The problem is, indeed, that the Composers in the WorksbyComposer menu
cannot be accessed using letter navigation. I don't often use the
Touch directly, so I may be mistaken, but I think it used to work. A
lot of water has flowed under the bridge over the last year, with
different SB/LLMS versions and some minor menu edits, so I can't say
this with any certainty.

There is no mention of COMPOSER in my Mixed Tag configuration. It is
in my Custom Tag configuration.

If there's nothing obvious wrong with my menus or other standard
setting, then please leave it. I can live with it.

The time taken for menus to work on 1st run after LMS startup is a much
greater issue for daily use, but I guess it's a fairly intractable
problem. You have a copy of my dbs. I wonder if you can see the same
delays on any of your systems?

I started to look at my custom/mixed configuration again.

Is there a clear explanation of the initial mixed tag set-up screen?
Looking at it again I am a bit confused. In one of your (old) examples
(for classical music) you suggested tags:

Album tags: ALBUM
Artist tags: ARTIST
Composer tags: COMPOSER
Conductor tags: CONDUCTOR,ARTIST
Band tags: BAND,ARTIST
Genre tags: GENRE

I don't quite follow the logic. Could you point me to somewhere where
it is explained in detail? What does it really mean for CONDUCTOR and
ARTIST to be mapped in this way? For instance, what difference would I
perceive in behaviour if CONDUCTOR was on its own?

I looked at the wiki but am none the wiser.

I currently have, in screen order:

ARTIST
ARTIST,ALBUMARTIST
TRACKARTIST,ARTIST
CONDUCTOR
COMPOSER
BAND
ALBUM
GENRE

Include custom tags - yes

Names to show -
ALBUM(Album:Albums),ARTIST(Artist:Artists),GENRE(Genre:Genres),YEAR(Year:Years),CONDUCTOR(Conductor:Conductors),COMPOSER(Composer:Composers),
BAND(Band:Bands),TRACKARTIST(Track Artist:Track
Artists),ALBUMARTIST(Album Artist:Album

WORKARTIST(Work Artist:Work Artists),SETID(Set Id:Set

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse Menus - different behaviours

Thanks. A glimmer of understand begins in my slow brain.

To reiterate, my custom scan set up does not include composer, or
conductor or indeed any tags except non-standard ones WORK, MOVEMENT,
WORKARTIST, SETID (and latterly TITLE as well).

I have another menu, Albums by Composer, which works fine, so the
mystery is still there, but it isn't worth the time and effort to find
out why.

I took my basic set up from your wiki recommendation at
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Setup_browse_menu_for_classical_music

Too illustrate how differently people think, there is no way I would
treat a Composer as an Artist. To me the difference between authoring
and performing is important and I would not wish to confuse the two.
Sometimes a person does both, in which case I'd include them in both of
the relevant tags. Life would be very boring if we all thought the same
way :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: WaveInput for Linux

2012-02-11 Thread PasTim

I have an ancient laptop now running a debian flavour. In my list of
mixers I have an Intel 82801DB-ICH4 Alsa Mixer, an analogue OSS one,
and a Pulse audio one, plus others.

The only reason for having installed LMS on my laptop is to (try to)
use wavein to drive my Touch (for some websites that will only provide
sound via a browser).

I have used wavein successfully on a PC running Windows.

I installed LMS and waveinput, configured as 'wavin:0', or 'wavin:' or
'wavin:default'. However, none of those work. It stops after a few
seconds, as it did for thingswelostinthefire.

I have very limited knowledge of linux despite having been in the
computer business for over 35 years (much of it on obscure kit in
assembler). So I can find and modify stuff when told how. For
instance, I can see information in/proc/asounds, showing:

1:: sequencer
2: [ 1- 0]: digital audio playback
3: [ 1- 0]: digital audio capture
4: [ 1] : control
5: [ 0- 4]: digital audio playback
6: [ 0- 3]: digital audio capture
7: [ 0- 2]: digital audio capture
8: [ 0- 1]: digital audio capture
9: [ 0- 0]: digital audio playback
10: [ 0- 0]: digital audio capture
11: [ 0] : control
33:

But I don't know what to do with the information.

/etc/asound.conf contains:

pcm.pulse {
type pulse
}
ctl.pulse {
type pulse
}
pcm.!default {
type pulse
}
ctl.!default {
type pulse
}

Again, I don't know what this means or whether it helps in setting
things up.

If I have to run lms as a user rather than a service, because of a
permissions issue, how would I do that?

I don't have a clue how to configure ALSA in the way you say - can you

As to your suggestion of VLC, how would I get the Touch to 'see' the

station to the Touch.

and but with well defined interface for which there is no need for a
special application as any application can pick up the audio stream you
want - as long as it is setup correctly and provide the correct
interface designation. Neither of which are usually obvious.

I only have minimal experience with ALSA (i.e. I only spent enough time
to get things working) and if you look back in this thread most solution
have not been available quickly but by spending time and trying out
 different possibilities.

I'll help as far as I can.

IIRC you were using some bleeding edge distro of linux.

So first detail your setup and what you are trying to do so that we can
step back and make sure WaveInput is the best/only solution.
Thanks for the offer. Frankly I think it's all a bit too hard for me.
I had, foolishly, imagined that what I wanted to do would not be
difficult. People seem to be streaming all sorts of stuff everywhere.

To make my need clear, the Gramophone website has a particular 'player'
which it seems cannot be accessed directly as an internet stream. You
have to play it via a browser on your desktop. So I want to capture
the audio from there and play it through my 'Touch'.

The Touch is in another room from my main desktop, so I thought to try
using my laptop. That ancient laptop (a 2003 Sony) is running a debian
flavour, which I suspect by now is a mix of several different ones now,
bleeding or otherwise. However, it runs fine, so I'm trying to leave
well alone.

My first attempt was to install LMS (which went like a breeze, somewhat
to my surprise - not long a go I had a devil of a job trying to get SBS
to run on Llnux). I thought the waveinput plugin would then do the
job. It seems it might if I knew enough about different audio software
on linux - but I don't. I'm not keen to deinstall stuf like pulse
audio, since something else will probably break if I fool around too
much (eg Skype or some other software on the laptop).

So taking a clue from you, I have taken a quick look at VLC, and some
of the related threads on that subject. It looks very versatile. So
versatile that it may take me months to get to anywhere with it.

I can see that if I can get VLC to capture the audio and broadcast it
on http, my main SB server could pick it up via http:192.168.1.n:8080,
and then my Touch would play it. Getting VLC to capture the audio
seems to be the hard bit. I'll investigate that route for a while.

Thanks again.

On my Ubuntu system I got a ALSA config working with Pulseaudio but
using arecord the quality was terrible - I can't figuire out what is
wrong (e.g.another signal is being mixed in).

So I changed to an all Pulaseaudio solution using parec command
instead of arecord. There are two steps.

 1. Find the monitor source of your PC audio using somehting like

Code:

   pacmd list | grep .monitor

 2. Use the relevant monitor source in a parec command such as to
 record into a falc file.

Code:

  parec -d alsa_output.pci-_00_1b.0.analog-stereo.monitor
--file-format=flac parec.flc

The above can eb used to test recording of the audio. You should
test this (especially with Gramaphone) before doing more work as
Flash audio and Pulse Audio have been known not to work well with
 some configs.

If it works OK - then the next steps will depend on your config.

 Q. When running LMS and playing the Gramaphone and recording the
audio stream using parec - is the LMS process directly in the same
process tree (i.e. all started from the same user login) as the
 pulseaudio --start process ?
It took many, many hours, but I got vlc to work in the end.

On my debian (wheezy) laptop, obtained the latest vlc version 1.2 and
built it (I tried 2.1 but couldn't get it to build properly). This was
a painful process, requiring many libraries to be added. When some could
not be added, sometimes removing one of the conflicting ones, then
adding it back in (getting a slightly different version) eventually
worked. Some of the missing libraries were said by the vlc ./configure
command not be be critical, but I found out later that they were.

Finally with a vlc that would recognise 'pulse' as an input I got it to
work. My command line is:

cvlc pulse://alsa_output.pci-_00_lf.5.analog-stereo.monitor
:sout='#transcode{vcodec=none,acodec=mp3,ab=320,channels=2,samplerate=44100}:http{dst=:8079/st.mp3}'
:no-sout-rtp-sap :no-sout-standard-sap

A few notes:

- cvlc runs vlc silently (I use killall vlc to stop it)
- the alsa_output. name comes from looking at the information shown
by the same pacmd command you used.
- I tried using acodec=vorb for OGG but overloaded the laptop and got
breakup
- I didn't get flac to work - no doubt some form of codec issue
- I am using my headphone socket adaptor plugged in to stop the audio
via the speakers on the laptop (I couldn't find a way to stop the
audible laptop sound without also stopping the streaming).
- I found pavucontrol (not originally installed) helpful in showing
what was going on.

Two tweaks that may also have helped. vlc has a 'real time' option
under tools, preferences, show 'all'.

Pulse audio has a file under /etc/pulse called daemon.conf. There's a
line containing
; realtime-scheduling=yes
Change this to
realtime-scheduling=yes
And
; default-fragment-size-msec = 25
to
default-fragment-size-msec = 10

Poured myself a beer, or 2.

I know quite a few non-computer people who would make a good go of
getting VLC to stream audio on Windows 7. The Standard Direct Show
worked fairly easily with the GUI, once I realised I had to try
different HTTP ports. Straying into less common codecs would, of
course, lead to much greater difficulties.

I know very few people who would be able (or prepared) to fight the
current release of vlc to get it to work on linux with pulseaudio. On
the GUI, vlc doesn't make it clear that much else other than v4l2 is
available (whatever that is), and that doesn't work on my laptop.

For 'computer people' the decision is different. Even without linux
knowledge, and underlying understanding of computers, familiarity with
command line interfaces and so on, make it at least feasible. For the
general public there's little realistic choice.

My top-level menus are now almost instant on linux, and take 20-25
seconds on Windoze (still too slow), so I'll head on to linux.

Finally, note that although the lower levels of my menus are unchanged
and still contain many joins, they are not slow in any environment. I
assume this is because all the data has already been read into memory,
and the range of items being read is much smaller (e.g. only things for
one COMPOSER).

Don't ask me why SQLite on Windows is so much slower than MySQL for
these functions (but quicker for the core LMS/SBS scanning functions).
I have no idea.

I hope the above is some help to someone out there.

2012-02-21 Thread PasTim

 Thanks for posting this.
What is this and how can I get it to try out LMS under Linux on my PC
running LMS without destroying the current Win 7 installation? I have
heard that Ubuntu can be run from a CD/DVD on a Win PC, but can LMS
somehow be installed under Linux then?
Get hold of wubi.exe from
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer . This creates
a second boot partition for ubuntu. You need to give it 17GB or so to
play with on a disc on your system. When it completes it may show a
'permissions' error, but it seems all is well. When I shut down after
the wubi installation I also got a BSOD (quite rare these days), but
again all is well.

In my setup, all my music files are on a separate drive, and I hold all
my Custom Scan and Custom Browse menus there as well, rather than in the
LMS directories. The idea was that both my Windows LMS and the Ubuntu
LMS would share the same menus and music files. If you are a linux
person, setting up ubuntu, installing LMS and getting it to share music
and menu files is probably simple. If you are not (like me) then it's
harder.

This is not really the place for linux installation details, so a brief
summary of what I did will have to suffice:

1) Get the dual boot system up and running - that worked well.
2) Try to find your way round the latest ubuntu desktop design - words
fail me
3) Download LMS for debian/ubuntu and install it - that worked well -
it starts at boot time and runs as a service all the time - use
'localhost:9000' from your browser to talk to it
4) Get ubuntu to see your music (etc) directory - in my case I did this
by:
a) Find the UUID (xx below) of the disc by using sudo blkid
b) Mount the disc with my music and menu files by adding the following
to /etc/fstab:

UUID=xxx  /media  ntfsdefaults,noexec 0 0

where /media is the directory I will expect to see all my music and
menu directories
5) Reboot
6) Check to see if your music other files are now visible under
/media - if they are then all is well. If not, tear hair out and try
again several ways until you get something to work.
7) Go into LMS, install plugins and set up the directories for custom
browse and custom scan to point to the shared directories, set up the
music library directory on the first set-up screen, and then rescan
8) be astonished at how much quicker it all is
9) Spend ages trying to get other useful stuff to work under ubuntu,
such as Squeezeplay, and pretty much give up on it, deciding a
dedicated LMS server is what I need, that does nothing at all except
store and play my music.

Good luck!

Thanks Erland - you have it in one.

So for instance I still have no clue how to get my shared drive to

era when we are moving to touch screens, what's that about?

I tried to install odbc for SQLite so I could look at the LMS

configuration files to edit.

Oh, and by the way, I cannot, for the life of me, get Ubuntu to share

20 different things I have probably got to the point where I would need
to reinstall from scratch to clear up the damage.

I picked Ubuntu current, stable, because I was told my previous attempt

Solved. The SQLiteManager error and your comment about the -wal file
got my brain working at last. I changed the access rights to .db,
db-wal and .db-shm (just in case) to 666 and now all methods work.

That includes the latest linux SQLite database browser (similar to the
firefox extension), and the latest odbc driver with libre-office base.
These methods had appeared to open the database but showed no tables at
all, instead of giving error messages, which fooled me.

Thanks again Erland.

Your reply must have been at the same time as mine. It was indeed the
other db-* files that caused the problem for the firefox extension, and
also for the odbc access and the stand-alone SQLitebrowser. All work
now. If the latter two had given any sort of error message I might
have got to a solution sooner.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse playtype query

2012-02-25 Thread PasTim

To avoid accidentally asking my Touch to play all my music in one go, at
the front of some of my CB menus I have placed:

playtypenone/playtype

This works well. Unfortunately, including this also removes the
selection of items at this level of menu by pressing a single letter on
the Touch remote.

Several of my mixed tag menus work without the
playtypenone/playtype, and allow me to select items by pressing one
letter on the remote. Adding just this one line in suppresses the
option to play all, but also stops selection by single letter.

Is this behaviour intentional?

I have installed the fix and it works well. Thanks very much indeed.

I don't quite understand why when I use playtypenone/playtype at
the top level of the menu:
a) the 'All Songs' options does not appear at the top level (as

b) when I pick an item off the menu (eg in my Works by Composer menu)
'All Songs' does appear at the top of the list of items at that second
level (as expected)
c) but that 'All Songs' option does nothing (not expected)

Please note I'm really not bothered about this since I'd never use the
option at this menu level either. If it's an obvious fault in my menu
then I'd be grateful to know how to fix it.

I've sorted this one out on the Web interface.

What I want is for All Songs at Level 1 to do nothing, or not appear at
all, and for All Songs at level 2 to select all at that level.

I have achieved this by:

1) playtypenone/playtype at the very top of the CB menu
2) playtypesql/playtype at menu level 1, with playdata
containing an sql select statement to select all items for the
selection at that level. Example below.

What this does is to show All Songs at the top level, but it does
nothing, which is good. At the next level, it selects all items
appropriate to that level. So, if using 'Works by Composer', having
chosen a composer, selecting 'All Songs' plays all tracks for that
composer.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Information Screen on Touch

2012-04-18 Thread PasTim

I'm trying to get the Information Screen plugin to work on my Touch, LMS
7.7.2. Apologies if my queries are answered elsewhere but I couldn't
find anything here or on the wiki. I seem to have two problems.

Firstly, the files always seem to get saved to the playlist directory,
even though I changed the directory on the 'Various Settings' page.

Secondly, having installed the Information Screen applet on the Touch
and restarted it LMS, with a 30 second screen saver delay and
selecting 'Information Screen' as the screen saver (is that the right
thing to do?) the screen shows no text at all. If I create several
screens I can find no way to select the one I want. What am I missing?

Touch. I'll try the Custom Clock.

If you like completely different layouts of the screens you like to

If you like the same layouts but want to vary which textual information
that's shown, you want to experiment with creating multiple items and
setting the visibilitytime, visibilityorder, visibilitygroup parameters.
You will find more information on the Custom Clock documentation page on
 the wiki: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Custom_Clock_applet
Thanks. I just wanted a slightly different text display than standard
(more like that which I have on the web page). When I get my brain
round the flexibility of the custom clock helper I'll sort something
out.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: New versions of erlands plugins

2012-04-21 Thread PasTim

I've been using the alpha version for Custom Scan for some time, mostly
to very good effect. I appreciate it's an alpha, so the following are
just comments, not complaints!

- when a 'look for changes' scan finishes, the custom scan page says it
is still scanning and never stops until LMS is restarted
- doing just a ratings scan on its own, having adjusted some static
ratings in my flacs, seems to do nothing - I have to do a full rescan -
is this as expected?

The alpha scan mostly seems to work well, particularly when I have
changed a track's tags and just played it. Is it likely to progress, or
have some of the features been included in the official version?

I still hope to finish the alpha and make a real release of it, because
I think it's the right way to go, but unfortunately there always seems
like something else which is more important pops up. I currently don't
plan to move individual features from the alpha to the official release,
because most(probably all) features in the alpha version depends on the
new design used in the alpha version so it will not be that easy to move
an individual feature. I've tried to implement features in both versions
already today if it's easy to do.

But just out of interest, are there any particular features in the alpha
which you would like to be moved to the official version ?
I imagine that the tighter integration with LMS means you cannot move
features, such as the custom scan info in the main rescan reports, into
the previous design. So no, I don't think there's anything specific
that could be moved.

Since I moved to the alpha version I've also moved platform (to a
Vortexbox appliance), so comparisons (of speed and interference with
playing) between custom scan versions are not possible.

I have noticed that LMS now doesn't let me play music even via a music
folder when a rescan is in progress, which I find a little irritating. I
used to use that facility when a custom scan was running. I'm not sure
whether the old version of custom scan would let me do this (by letting
the LMS scan complete earlier).

Logitech disables Music Folder browsing while scanning is in process and
since the alpha version of Custom Scan runs within the main scanner
process it probably means that you can't access the music folder until
 Custom Scan has finished.
I recently decided to change my track rating scheme. I should explain
that I'm not interested in dynamic ratings - all my ratings are set up
in tags in my flacs. I changed a whole bunch, but trying to get the
Alpha Custom Scan to just rescan ratings seemed to do nothing at all. I
then did a full rescan but still some of my ratings were unchanged.
Trackstat is set to no do any automatic changes so I'm puzzled as to how
this all works.

Still, given that I was using an Alpha Custom Scan I decided to go back
to the standard version, and it now seems to be changing the ratings
correctly (it's still running). You may want to look at that part of
the Alpha when you get around to it.

One benefit of the old scanner is that, as you have agreed in your
previous post, you can at least use the Music Folder whilst the old
Custom Scan is still running, and this is quite useful when scans take a
couple of hours.

I thought I'd look at the logs, not having looked for ages. With the
Alpha Custom Scan there are a great number of logs like the one in the
attachment (the forum won't let me post the text, I don't know why,
something to do with images, of which there are none - gr) sometimes
with different PLUGIN_ strings missing. Again, I'm not complaining,
just giving you some information you may find useful about the Alpha
version.

Not sure if it's something on the server side or on the web browser, I
 would try to:
 1. Empty the web browser cache and restart the web browser
 2. If the above doesn't help, try to uninstall Custom Scan, then
shutdown SBS/LMS and goto Cache\InstalledPlugins\Plugins directory and
verify that there is no CustomScan directory and after verifying that
install the CustomScan non alpha version you like to use. Hopefully this
will make sure the log messages stops.

Let me know if 1 or 2 solved the issue, because I had another user with
similar issues a few days back with the SocialMusicDiscovery plugin, so
I like to know what the solution is.
I suspect the old directory remained. I will give it another try when I
have solved my current, related, problem, which is about ratings.

It seems that even having changed fixed ratings in my flacs, some of the
previous ratings remain in one or more of the trackstat tables. I
though the track_statistics table would get updated form the flacs, but
it seems not entirely. I don't understand the link between this and the
tracks_persistent table, but I wonder if the scan uses data from the
tracks_persistent table in preference to that from the flacs. Is that
correct? I'm assuming the tracks_history is just passive for
information - is that correct?

If I want to ensure the tracks have the ratings from the flacs is there
any option other than to delete all trackstat data?

You might want to know why I am taking this approach. It is simply that
I want to ensure all the data is where it belongs, in the flacs, in the
event LMS is defunct.

I'm going to have to apologise for my stupidity (again) but I am now
well and truly confused.

I have a Vortexbox appliance. When I set up LMS I created a directory
for Trackstat under /storage/music and pointed trackstat to that
directory.

I now see that trackstat hasn't created any automatic backup files since
I got my VB (even though set to do so) since it doesn't have access
rights to the directory set up (as root). I changed the ownership, and
group, of the directory to squeezeboxserver.

I tried to create a manual backup using the trackstat page, but it says
it needs a file name. So I provide a file name, of a file which does
not yet exist, called TrackstatBackup. Trackstat then logs that it
cannot open the file. Well of course it can't, because the backup has
not yet been created. I even tried changing access rights to my
Trackstat directory to 777, but it still says

Code:

  [12-04-25 09:55:56.9345] Plugins::TrackStat::Backup::File::backupToFile (68)
Could not open TrackstatBackup for writing.

What am I missing?

To be clear, the problem started when I switched to the old version of
Custom Scan, stopping and restarting LMS in the process.

The problem reported in the log did not occur today after rebooting both
PC and VB, and doing a full rescan later in the day. I did not have to
delete the CustomScan directory. My browser is set to clear a lot of
things up each time it closes, so that may have helped.
