Hi Michael;

I've just installed freenas 0.7.3405 (nightly build), based on FreeBSD
7.0.
The problem now is that Squeezecenter doesn't work anymore.
When I enter the command ps ax there is no Perl process.
Included is my server.log.
Can you take a look at it please

Thanks for the report. I'd stick with a stable release. I've never tested
SlimNAS on a 0.7 build, but I'd assume I'll have to re-compile all packages.
Don't expect this to happen too soon...

Confirmed. No idea why it doesn't actually shut down, though SC seems
to go through the shutdown process, even removing its .pid file. Could
you please give the attached functions.inc file another try? Copy
functions.inc to usr/www on the share where you installed SlimNAS. You

No need to go back just because of this issue. Wipe the squeezecenter
folder with all its subfolders. If you still have the squeezecenter-*
folder, rename this one to squeezecenter. Restart your machine and you
should be up and running.

In fact all the issues we're seeing are the result of a ridiculous effort
to just unpack an archive file into the right place. Installing manually
is so simple, but I wanted to make it even simpler. Result: tons of
confusion and frustration :-(.

I'd still like to understand what's going on here. What version of FreeNAS

Brilliant Michael, thanks for all your efforts on this...
I've tested enabling/disabling many times and no problems yet.

So that I can be clear about what to do in the future for upgrades:

SLIMNAS:
Download any new slimnas files that you have made available.
Copy to /share/slimnas directory and run
Reboot FreNAS for new code to be used.

SQUEEZECENTER:
Download latest file and copy into /share/slimnas folder
Refresh FreeNAS WebGui
Select new file and click save

If this is all there is too it, it really couldn't be simpler.
Thanks again

It's not worth trying to fix the SC issue as long as you can't reliably run

anything else, unless you really don't care about the data you're storing on

Michael,
I'm not sure where I have been unclear but you are not getting my point
at all.

Until installing slimnasno problems with my FreeNAS...NONE, been up
for 9 months or so no failures, crashes or anything else.

After installing slimnas...blown away by potential of SqueezeCentre and
keen to implement around the house.

Problems:
A. slimnas install script not functioning correctly
1. Doesn't actually install the squeezecentre software properly
2. Does not create working scripts used by WebGUI in FreenAS to
stop/start SC, for adding new plugins.
3. 'Apparently' SC not available after a reboot (don't know
haven't tested this yet as I didn't want to break SC while I was using
it). I can of course reboot FreeNAS at any time...just didn't want to
go through the hassle of reinstalling everything. I was waiting for
the knowledge of how to shutdown gracefully before moving on.
4. Installing new script over old one doesn't fix anything.

B. Unable to remove slimnas integration with FreeNAS
When selecting the uninstall slimnas option I get this error:
Warning: rmdir(/usr/local/www/ext/slimserver): Directory not empty in
/usr/local/www/ext/slimserver/functions.inc on line 220 Warning: Cannot
modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at
/usr/local/www/ext/slimserver/functions.inc:220) in
/usr/local/www/services_slimserver_maintenance.php on line 17

I am happy to do anything you need me to to support you, read logs, try
stuff etc.

Just to recap...
Cheers
Gary

 1. Doesn't actually install the squeezecentre software properly

Please make sure you're running the latest SlimNAS (0.9 as of right now)
code. Some of the issues you've mentioned earlier sounded like you were running
early code. Don't bother uninstalling the current version. Just install the
latest on top of it. Reboot. Install the latest SC7.

 2. Does not create working scripts used by WebGUI in FreenAS to
stop/start SC, for adding new plugins.

You _must_ reboot after the update to be sure the new code is used.

go through the hassle of reinstalling everything

Don't you see the SC menu option in FreeNAS at all after the reboot? What type
of FreeNAS installation (version install option) are you using?

 B. Unable to remove slimnas integration with FreeNAS

Don't worry: just wipe the usr/www folder from the share you installed SlimNAS
in. Reboot the machine and SlimNAS should be gone.

When selecting the uninstall slimnas option I get this error:

Thanks for the hint - fixed in 0.9

Michael,
An update on new 0.999 ;-) install script:

I'm using FreeNAS 0.69 build 3184 (had to track back from 3195 as
locked on boot)
Downloaded latest SlimNAS 0.9 file and install script and copy to
slimnas folder.

Rebuilt FreeNAS from CD to CF card.
Reloaded pre-slimnas install config backup in archive and loaded.
Ran new 0.9 installer...no problems...SqueezeCentre showed up in
WebGui.
Rebooted FreeNAS and selected SC install file...No problems, even
checked the slimnas dir and ALL OK. Woohoo.
Rebootedjust in case...hey presto SC up and running.

Now back to issue I reported before.

SC is brilliant only because of it's flexibility via added plugins. To
do this I need to stop/start SC...the only way I know to do that is to
de-select save 'enable' in FreeNAS webgui, then select save
'enable'.

When I deselect and save then accessed SC via webpage I can still
access and configure SC. As I see it...the WebGui enable/disable
option has no impact on SC, can you check?

Cheers
Gary

Hi Michael, I'm afraid it's still doing the same thing. unpacking
recursivly I also dowloaded Squeezecentre 7.1 in case the archive was
in somne way corrupt and that was causing it but got the same problem

I went back to version 0.99 and that doesn't unpack any of the files
recursively. it does create a squeezecenter directory but doesn't
populate it with anything.
I don't have a 0.999 or 0. to try as they got overwritten.

I've been rather busy over the weekend so I didn't get a chance to try
anything out so it's been sitting idle. Right now I've just started up

What I have so far is just a prototype - a bare system sitting on the
table. There's a mini ITX MB (Jetway J7F4 with 512MB of RAM) a PSU and
hard disk, al fresco. Freenas is installed on a 1GB USB flash. Now that
I'm happy that freenas with your plugin can do what I want it's time to
buy a Squeebox, and a case for the NAS.

Thanks for the effort you've put into building this plugin.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-04-27 Thread Harani

I've been following this thread beacuse i've been having problems
getting Squeezecentre to run under Slimnas.

Initially the problem was the the Squeezecenter folder was empty.

So i've just just removed everything and gone back to download the
latest versions of Slimnas, the slimnas installer script and the
Squeezecenter software

Starting with a FreeNAS witn no slimnas install, I put the intsaller
and the slimnas.tgz file under */mnt/music/slimnas* as i always have.
Then ran the command
/BIN/SH /MNT/MUSIC/SLIMNAS/SLIMNAS-INSTALL.SH

it reported that squeezecenter had been added to the menu in FreeNAS.
So far so good.

Then i put the *squeezecenter-noCPAN.tgz* file in */mnt/music/slimnas*

The Squeezecente menu (which was set to look in */mnt/music/slimnas*)
saw it and gave an option of keep existing or select
squeezecenter-noCPAN.tgz

selected that file and hit save. watching the share it created the
following folders
VAR
ETC
USR
SQUEEZECENTER
SQUEEZECENTER-7.0-17793-NOCPAN

then i went into the Squeezecenter folder to see what it was creating
in there and it was populating that folder with an exact duplicate of
the folder above it. var, etc, usr, squeezecenter and
squeezecenter-7.0-17793-noCPAN went into that squeezecenter folder and
it was polulating that too, and the one below it etc. it managed to
nest itself approx 20 deep before i rebooted the machine to stop it.

So i think the new Slimnas has a recursive problem when unpacking the
files ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-04-25 Thread BodgeIT

Could you please tell me the _exact_ filenames you've been using
(slimnas*.*, squeezcenter*.*)? What browser have you been using to
 download them?

OK, I used Firefox to download slimnas_install.sh and slimnas-0.999.tgz
to get FreeNAS ready, I installed them in a terminal session(PuTTy).

The first time round I installed squeezecenter-7.0-noCPAN.tgz. I had a
couple of issues with the installer but renamed the untarred directory
to squeezecenter and it all started. I didn't notice whether the
enable/disable in FreeNAS page was working at that time, I was too
pleased to have it working!

In fact now that I am recalling what happened I suspect it didn't
because I tried to install LastFM plugin to the first installation,
copied it to the plugins directory, disaabled/enabled in FreeNAS then
looked for it in the SqueezeCenter control but nothing...

I then tried to 'upgrade' (basically over copy) with
squeezecenter-noCPAN.tgz (7.01 17793 build). This is where it went
wrong.

It didn't start up after a reboot, loads of errors in the log mostly
about not getting access to database. Nor could I see Perl running or
MySQL.
I decided to start again. I deleted the all the folders in slimnas
except usr and var, copied back squeezecenter-noCPAN.tgz file,
refreshed webpage on FreeNAS, selected the file to install and saved,
renamed the untarred folder to squeezecenter, clicked enablewaited
and hey presto shiney squuezecenter up and running.

Unfortunately I can't mod it with Plugins because I can't stop/start
from the FreeNAS page using the enable/disable. I also don't want to
reboot FreeNAS because I read in one of your posts that this was
possible the cause for a problem with MySQL

Sry for lack of detail in last msg...noob error...

You getting anywhere with this NMW? I have a similar setup on CF and it
worked fine.

The Squeezecenter directory should not be empty - that is where it is
all installed. Looks like it failed part way through. I originally had
trouble with an earlier version of SlimNAS and the 7.0 release. Suggest
you clean out /mnt/storage/slimnas again and start with Michael's latest
0.999 release and try the latest 7.0.1 nightly build - they work fine
together for me.

Yep, just sorted it out this morning.

The problem is in the installer. Or the naming of the squeezecenter tar
files and the root directory they contain.

During the install the installer tries to determine the name of the
directory which the squeezecenter tar file extracts. Either this has
changed or the naming of the tar file has changed, and the code no
longer gets the correct directory name. Thus, when it tries to copy the
contents of that directory into squeezecenter nothing gets copied.

The simple workaround is to rename the sqeezecenter tar file so that
its name is the same as the root directory it contains, with .tgz
appended as the filetype.

One caveat is that simply re-running the installer with the re-named
tar file doesn't seem to work. I presume that the failed installation
has created a file somewhere which re-running the installer doesn't
fix. What I did was to completely re-install freenas again, then run
the installer. This worked for me, and it also survived a re-boot.

A more permanent fix would be to modify the PHP so that it looks into
the tar file to get the exact directory name (e.g. capture the output
of tar cvf | head -1). I might look into this, but can't guarantee
anything.

2008-04-24 Thread BodgeIT

I'm not sure, but I'm defo having problems with 0.999 script.
I had the renaming issues and managed to figure those out.
I initially installed SB 7.0 and then tried to 'upgrade' to 7.01.
This didn't work and after alot of faffin, I had to totally uninstall
and reinstall. My SqueezeBox is now up and running but the
enable/disable option on FreeNAS does not stop/start the server.
When manually entering the shutdown script, I get:

$ /usr/local/bin/php -f
/mnt/active/apps/slimnas/usr/www/services_slimserver_stop.php
X-Powered-By: PHP/5.2.5
Content-type: text/html

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '*' in /usr/local/bin/php on line

Any ideas?

p.s. thanks for the script I'm sure when I get it all running as I want
it it will be perfect.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-04-21 Thread nmw

I'm having pretty much the same experience as other users posting in
this thread. I can't get slimnas to install and run.

I've started right back at scratch to eliminate any previous setup
problems. What I've done is:
- an embedded install of FreeNAS version 0.686.3 revision 3011 to a
CF.
- setup networking
- added hard disk to system, mounted as /mnt/storage and created the
share.
- created the directory /mnt/storage/slimnas and copied the 3 files
there.
- run the command /bin/sh /mnt/storage/slimnas/slimnas-install.sh
- in the Extensions/SqueezeCenter web page select
squeezecenter-noCPAN.tgz to install, check Enable and click on Save.
- The status remains as Failed.

So, where can we look for diagnostics to find out what is going wrong
here? I don't know my way around freeBSD and FreeNAS so I don't know
what scripts this application is running in order to start up. Will it
create any log files anywhere (there are none in the Maintenance

drwxrwxrwx 6 www wheel 512 Jan 23 2007 usr

I don't know if this is important, but the squeezecenter directory is
empty.

- the shutdown script was missing, leaving the .pid file behind when FreeNAS
was stopped. This file prevented SC from starting automatically at boot time

- I'm now using file paths to standard commands such as cp and mv which are
used to move/rename from squeezecenter-cpan (whatever) to squeezecenter. Though
I never saw an issue without the path, I noticed I had been doing this in other

As I understand it, flash memory used in CF cards and USB sticks, for
example, have a limited number of times they can perform write
operations. The limits are very high (I've heard on the order of 100k
times); this is a lot of reinstalls. However, if they're being used as
disks, each block write (I believe) counts, so each line written to a
logfile could count.

This is why many CF based installations create ramdisks; then, logfiles
and other write operations can be done there without altering the CF
image. Things which require permanent writing would need to be copied
somewhere as part of shutdown scripts, or at least written permanently
only once (like configuration changes).

I'm not yet familiar enough with the chattiness in the form of
logging of SC or FreeNAS itself. I'll learn about this soon! I'm just
trying to get SC to actually startup...

Looking into this further, it seems like slimnas assumes that, when
untarring the SC 7.0 distribution tgz, it all ends up in a directory
called ./squeezecenter. However, the leading path in the tar file is
./squeezecenter-7.0-17793-noCPAN.

This doesn't look right. But, manually renaming this top dir to

supported)?

FreeNAS version: FreeNAS-i386-liveCD-0.686.3.3011.iso
SlimNAS 0.99 (downloaded today, 16-April)

FreeNAS is running fine. SlimNAS seems to install correctly, but never
starts. (After 'enabling SqueezeCenter, hitting 'SAVE', waiting,
nothing happens.) There are no errors logged anywhere that I can
find.

Reading this thread, I notice some reference to certain utility php
files, such as ./usr/www/services_slimserver_stop.php. This file does
not exist for me. To determine if there was a fault in installation, I
untarred slimnas.tgz on another machine, and this file is missing from
there as well. If this file should be there, are we somehow using a
damaged slimnas.tgz?

Mine too is a FreeNAS FULL installation and I also find the .pid file is
left behind in /slimnas/var. As I mentioned earlier I am also missing
the /slimnas/usr/www/services_slimserver_stop.php file which should run
when FreeNAS shuts down. Could it be that this 'stop' file clears down
the .pid file and because its missing / not happening the .pid gets
left behind ? With a FreeNAS 'embedded' version all of this would
happen in memory and so when an embedded version of FreeNAS shuts down
the .pid file goes automatically ?

Just some thoughts.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-04-09 Thread ceejayemm

I have upgraded my SC installation to the same as Michael's
(7.0.1-18530) and can now get FreeNAS to reliably restart SC on a
reboot or after a clean shutdown of the FreeNAS installation. However
if FreeNAS screws up its shutdown for some reason then on the next
clean start of FreeNAS I have to manually start SC but I don't have to
re-install it.

As part of the SlimNAS installation a startup and a shutdown command
are added to System: Advanced: Command scripts. The shutdown script
(/usr/local/bin/php
-f /mnt/Disk1/slimnas/usr/www/services_slimserver_stop.php) appears to
be missing from my installation of SlimNAS. Could this be the problem
? If during a clean shutdown or reboot could FreeNAS being doing
something that equates to a clean shutdown of SlimNAS but if the
shutdown gets screwed up THEN it leaves SlimNAS in a 'damaged' state
until it is next manually restarted which cleans it up again ?

BTW - FreeNAS 0.69 is the latest FreeNAS installation builing on
FreeBSD 6.3 rather than FreeBSD 6.2 used for the earlier versions.
Other than this problem with occasionally failing to restart, SlimNAS
works incredibly well on this version of FreeNAS as it has on previous
versions thanks to Michael's hard work and the improved facilities of
SqueezeCenter. I get the impression that he is struggling a bit with
this problem but I am sure he will work it out in the end. Michael,
thanks very much for your efforts.

Chris

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-04-08 Thread ceejayemm

Michael

I am getting exactly the same problem as your other users. I am using
FreeNAS 0.69.3072 Full Installation, your latest SlimNAS install
scripts and the SC 7.0.1 NB 17914. During the installation SlimNAS
will start up correctly but on a reboot of FreeNAS it fails to start.
I have checked your previous comments about running Perl etc and cannot
see a problem here. Out of desperation I took the startup command line
and ran it from a console session, here's what happened:

freenas:~# usr/local/bin/php -f
/mnt/Disk1/slimnas/usr/www/services_slimserver_init.php
usr/local/bin/php: Command not found.

If I check the directory for php it is there:

freenas:~# ls -lrt /usr/local/bin/php
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 3162956 Mar 24 09:01 /usr/local/bin/php

However services_slimserver.php from the same directory does run (with
errors) but it does at least try to run:

freenas:~# /usr/local/bin/php -f
/mnt/Disk1/slimnas/usr/www/services_slimserver.php

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare slimserver_configure() (previously
declared in
/mnt/Disk1/slimnas/usr/www/functions.inc:3) in
/usr/local/www/ext/slimserver/functions.inc on line 13

A full list of /mnt/Disk1/slimnas/usr/www gives:

freenas:~# ls -lrt /mnt/Disk1/slimnas/usr/www
total 34
-rwxrwxrwx 1 www wheel 201 Jan 23 2007

drwxrwxrwx 3 www wheel 512 Mar 27 13:10 par-www

Does this help at all ?

Chris

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-04-08 Thread Michael Herger
I'm really sorry: it just works for me.

- downloaded FreeNAS-i386-liveCD-0.686.3.3011.iso
- did an embedded install on a clean system without any previous install
- created a /mnt/slimnas share (SMB)
- copied the files from my site plus squeezecenter-7.0.1-18530-noCPAN.tgz to
that share
- run /bin/sh /mnt/slimnas/slimnas-install.sh
- went to the web interface, told it to install the above SC version
- enabled the service
- SC was up and running within 10 minutes
- rebooted the system, just to be sure
- SC was back up after a minute

What's so different from my approach to what you're experiencing?

I then tried the same procedure with a FreeNAS _full_ install. And I have to
admit that it wouldn't start SC automatically after a reboot. Though starting
it manually does work without any further issue. I'll have to investigate this
case (I had never done a full install before).

But no problems with empty folders, corrupted files, SC not starting at all.

So... are all of you who are seeing issues with the SlimNAS install using a
FreeNAS full installation? If not: how much memory do you have? How much
space left on the share you're trying to install SlimNAS on?

About copying the files: Wouldn't it be enough to ensure that
/usr/local/www/ext/slimserver exists, and then run everything from
 /mnt/.../slimnas/usr/www?

FreeNAS web server won't allow this. But never mind about it: those files weigh
a few kB, no more. And nobody should have to tinker with them anyway, the
system should just work. If it doesn't, then this is the real issue to solve,
not the fact that a few files have to be copied around.

When I do an install, I am over writing the previous embeddedinstall
on the USB drive, I will assume that is the same as an clean install?
The same goes for the hard drive where the /mnt/slimnas exists. The
hard drive is re-formatted after each new install.
Michael the freenas option lists for the creation of the embedded
install lists two options, one which creates an additional file system
on the flash, and the other one does not. Which one do you use? Also
during the creation of the SMB share, there are several options
regarding inheriting permissions, extended attributes etc. Do you use
any of these?

I am fishing for some delta's :)

thanks!

I will have to correct myself. I thought that I successfully tested
that squeezecenter started correctly after a reboot, but either I have
forgotten that test, or else something has changed. Anyway, it doesn't
start automatically now, I have to disable/enable the extension to get
it to start. Could it be that the startup code is being run before the

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-04-07 Thread sfraser

Michael, I finally got a chance to try another install. I decided to
back down to freenas 686.2. I completed a fresh install of 686.2 on to
a USB drive. as per your response to my last post a few weeks ago, i
used the default user accounts, and moved version 99 of slimnas, the
install file and squeezecenter nocpan.tgz into the slimnas directory on
the freenas.

A couple of things, after the install was completed the squeezecenter
directory was created but was left empty. etc, usr, and var directories
were created in the slimnas folder. I tried uncompressing the SC.tgz on
another workstation and then moving the files over into the
squeezecenter folder but that did not work either.

So as I sit now, I do not see any perl process's in my process list.
there is no SC log files in the maintanence window, and obviously SC
does not start.

Is there any suggestions you might have regarding where I can start
debugging this issue. I must be doing something either during the
slimnas install?

thanks for your time.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-04-06 Thread Michael Herger
This can't be right. What's the point of making that copy in the first
place, if the original files are used?

Work around FreeNAS inability to follow symlinks. I was using them in earlier
versions of SlimNAS. But then the web server's configuration was changed to no
longer follow symlinks. As by default that file system is run from a ram disk,
the files are being copied there at startup.

Another BTW: The config.xml sets up services_slimserver_stop.php to be
run on system shutdown, but that file doesn't exist.

That's a good pointer. Will have to take a look at this...

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-04-05 Thread oyersoy2

Me too!

I also had some problems getting slimnas up and running. Same symptoms
as many others have reported: just a silent failure to start up.

I eventually traced down the problem to garbage in one of the include
files used by perl, Carp.pm. The first disk-block had been replaced
by nulls. The file unpacked OK on my Linux machine, so I just copied
it across, and finally got it to work. I untared slimnas.tgz again on
the Freenas machine, just to see if there was a bug in tar, but this
time the file was OK. Strange...

BTW, during this debugging session, I got confused (and a little
irritated, if truth be told) by slimnas' repeated copying of the php
files from /mnt/... to /usr/local/www/... I naturally enough put my
debug statements in the copy in /usr/local/www/... and found that
1) They were sometimes not executed at all because the files in
/mnt/... were used instead, and
2) They disappeared because a new copy from /mnt/... overwrote my
changes.
This can't be right. What's the point of making that copy in the first
place, if the original files are used? And why are the files copied on
every system startup and every access through the WEB interface?

Another BTW: The config.xml sets up services_slimserver_stop.php to be
run on system shutdown, but that file doesn't exist.

After some massaging I managed to get squeezecenter-7.1-18180-noCPAN.tgz
to install and run. There seams to be a bug in this nightly where an
artist with songs without an album (click on no album) and it loads all
of the songs without an album as well, so I may go ahead and upgrade to
the current FreeNAS release and then start over. My data is in a raid
set which just needs to be remounted once I install on the OS drive (a
spare 4gb ide drive). Thanks again for a great product Michael.

On another note. My server is a Celeron 600 mhz with 256mb ram and with
SC7 up and running and with a library of about 10k songs it uses just
over 200mb ram and about 10% cpu utilization. Performance is snappy on
a SB3. Haven't tested with a SBC yet.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-04-01 Thread ik632

I've been running 0.685b2 with SlimNAS 0.4 using SlimServer 6.5.4. I
tried to upgrade to 0.99 tonight using SqueezeCenter 7.0 and SC doesn't
want to start for me.

I deleted all of the files in the folder where SlimServer was installed
and removed the SlimNAS extension tab. After that I rebooted and ran the
new (0.99) install and it seamed to go ok. Next went to the tab and
installed by clicking on the box for 7.0 and install. Once it was done,
enable box, save and nothing. I can remove it all and 6.5.4 works fine.

Is 0.685b2 too old or am I missing something fundamental here?

Is 0.685b2 too old or am I missing something fundamental here?

Yes, 0.99 should be installed on 0.686. FreeNAS changed the way additional
tasks are started at boot time.

2008-03-30 Thread brntcrsp

I'm also experiencing some strange behavior with rebooting Freenas and
finding Slimnas not running.

When I perform a reboot the Slimnas services seem to start correctly,
but when I power down the machine and restart it the service does not
seem to run. If I perform a Disable/Enable cycle on
Services:SqueezeCenter it starts up appropriately.

FYI,
I brought the NAS home last night to troubleshoot. I updated to the

is that SC7 has started every time without fail. Bad news, is that I

I installed the slimnas integration with slimnas-0.92.tgz, but had to
rename it slimnas.tgz for the script to pick it up.

Michael,
I can always get it started by
un-checking enable - save

visit my friend's home and repeat the above.

Frustrating, since the goal is a reliable, appliance-like solution.

Can you give me some tips on troubleshooting?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-02-18 Thread ik632

How much resources is this using on your systems? I have a Celeron 600
with 256mb ram and when I run SS6.5.4 for about 3 months the memory
usage gets up to about 80%. With a fresh reboot of all things it gets
back down to about 50% ram usage and very minimal cpu usage (only high
usage on scan). Will the 600mhz/256mb be stout enough to handle SC7
running on FreeBSD?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-02-17 Thread RegH

I have built the Freenas Server fine and got the mount point etc.

Downloaded and installed SlimNas_0.92 and this seems to be running fine
(get the ExtensionsSqueezeCenter menu).

Downloaded and installed the latest nightly of SqueezeCenter
(squeezecenter-7.0-17599-noCPAN.tgz). This seems to do something and
comes back with The changes have been applied successfully but the
SlimNas Status is Failed - SqueezeCenter is not available.

I have tried Restart/Re-Enable but the [PERL] process is definitely not
running as described by Michael's crib sheet.

Any ideas where to go next? I have reached the limits of my (20 yrs
ago) exposure to Unix :-)

Did you give it a minute or two to start up? The status on that page is very
rough (I should probably remove it...). Often SC would take much longer than
the page to be built, thus the status is wrong right after the start.

Just tried rebooting the server twice and SC came back up fine within a

Perhaps it takes longer to come up the first time and if you get

Right, before I begin I am completley new to freenas and freebsd in
general :-)

I;ve had a play with freenas and got it playing nicely, but i've tried
getting my new favourite software to run but all i get is the
'squeezecenter is not available' message

I've tried fresh install of freenas (full installs of most recent, and
most recent stable)

I'm downloading the slimnas files straight from firefox on os x
straight to the slimnas folder on a mount.

I see the nice message where its installs, its in the left menu column,
I've clicked to save, then clicked to enable

after browsing most topics on the slimnas I've typed in ps ax in the
command line and nothing seems to be running in the results. I have
tried a number of different nightlys from slimdevices

I am attemtping to run squeeze center so all software is matching :-)

Any help for this dummy get this up and running would be greatly
appreciated! :-)

Hi Michael,
I have installed FreeNAS on an old PC and also installed you slimnas

DS-101j.
I have problems setting the directory of the: iTunes Music Library.xml
Location and the iTunes Music Folder in the iTunes setup.
My FreeNAS has ip 192.168.0.104 and the DS has 192.168.0.103.
I'm asuming that the path has to be typed in as
\\192.168.0.103\music\iTunes\ and \\192.168.0.103\music\iTunes\iTunes
Music but all i get is an :
Invalid value \\192.168.0.103\music\iTunes\ for xml_file
Invalid value \\192.168.0.103\music\iTunes\iTunes Music for
music_path
On my PC I have mapped the music folder as Y: drive but i assume that
the FreeNAS server don't know this.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2007-12-14 Thread quick_snack

First of all I delete all in dir /mnt/data/extensions/SlimNAS

Then I tried to remove the extension itself but get the following
error:
Code:

Warning: rmdir(/usr/local/www/ext/slimserver): Directory not empty in
/usr/local/www/ext/slimserver/functions.inc on line 173 Warning: Cannot modify
header information - headers already sent by (output started at
/usr/local/www/ext/slimserver/functions.inc:173) in
/usr/local/www/services_slimserver_maintenance.php on line 17

So I manually remove all in /usr/local/www/ext. The dirs perl5 and
mysql etc. (links) still exist in /usr/local/lib. Removed with find .
-type l -exec rm {} \;

I remove the postinit command wich I manually inserted by the
webinterface, a refresh displays no slimserver extension anymore.

In putty I do the following:

Code:

freenascenic:/mnt/data/extensions/SlimNAS# ls -l
  total 34418
  -rwxrwxrwx 1 root wheel 17150386 Dec 14 19:43

  -rwxrwxrwx 1 root wheel 18048583 Dec 14 19:43 slimnas.tgz
  freenascenic:/mnt/data/extensions/SlimNAS#

The files are new downloaded from internet.
After this all I restart FreeNAS.
Then after reboot:

Code:

freenascenic:/mnt/data/extensions/SlimNAS# /bin/sh
/mnt/data/extensions/SlimNAS/slimnas-install.sh
  Extracting Perl and supporting files...
Creating service web page for FreeNAS web interface...
  Done!

Please open go your FreeNAS' main menu - you should
now find SlimServer in the Extensions section.

  Have fun!
  freenascenic:/mnt/data/extensions/SlimNAS#

When I refresh the webpage I see an extension with slimserver! :-)
I choose for an installation of a squeezecenter trunk and after a while
I get the message that squeezecenter is not available.

In the advanced departments two new commands has been inserted. For
starting and stopping slimserver.

OK, squeezecenter did not start now, lets try after a reboot. So reboot
FreeNAS and lets see what happens.

   -rwxrwxrwx 1 root wheel 18048583 Dec 14 19:43 slimnas.tgz

Is this the renamed slimnas-0.91.tgz file? The plain slimnas.tgz will _not_
work with trunk.

When I refresh the webpage I see an extension with slimserver! :-)

That's no good - it should be an extension SqueezeCenter. Did you download the
correct file?

Sorry, used to use slimserver instead of squeezecenter.

Yes, I did rename the slimnas.tgz (from version 0.9) and yes, The
extensions webpage shows the squeezecenter extensions instead of
slimservers.

That's not enough. You need 0.91.

I did download the 0.91 version (from december 14th). All files were
downloaded that day.

I have succesfully installed and run slimserver before with 130 Mb free
memory and a swap of 128 Mb. Can it be that squeezeserver would require
more ram. In that case the limited size of intern memory would cause
the problem.

I'm sorry, no. I didn't have time yet to do some more investigation. But it's

anything news yet?

I found out that the usr/lib/perl... dir is symbolic linked to
/usr/local/lib/perl... so the file store.al would be found according to
the path within @INC.

Why it does not work is a mystery.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 0.9 Beta forSqueezeCenter 7.0

2007-12-10 Thread quick_snack

No, I am using a 386 800Mhz machine.

After checking the directory
/mnt/data/extensions/SlimNAS/squeezecenter/CPAN I found that the 'arch'
directory is missing.

I am using the Squeezecenter version
SlimServer_trunk_v2007-12-09.no-cpan-arch.tar.gz

Thanks for the rapid reply
