Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-04-03 Thread Michael Herger
I tried to initialise slimnas in the last stable version of freenas (on
HD) without succes. Everything was ok, but SqueezeCenter is not
available. Please note that it might take a minute or more for the
service to be available after a restart. Please refresh this page to
 check the status again.

Did you try to connect a minute later again? As the message says (I will
remove it - too much confusion...): startup might take a while. Try again.

 The logs are :

Nothing serious in here.

I use an intel based motherboard AMD dual core proc (i got it for small
prize) with a soft raid configuration :

Ok, this shouldn't take minutes to start... Can you connect to
http://yourserver:9000/? Do you by chance use FreeNAS' UPnP service too?

Did you run ps ax from FreeNAS' command panel to see whether there is some

I seems that upnp is not configured on my winxp.

Don't do it if you don't need it. I only asked because some UPnP servers have a
port conflict with SC. But I'm not sure about the one running on FreeNAS. Turn
it off to be sure - you can always re-enable it once SC is up and running.

I hope you were using your server's IP address instead of yourserver, did
you? :-)

answer.

This was done with a trial freenas so I suppose i'll do the same job
in the case slinas does't launch automaticly after your script ?

Second question (out of the subject now). When i use squeezecenter, i
began to enter my login and it works and after that the SC shows me a
list of subdirectories, but I do not know where it is, on which
machine.

I put a new subdirectory on slimNAS in my freenas machine, and it
doesn't appears in the menu list. I tried to put at the bottom line m:
(name of my freenas)/slimNAS/music...and it show me a red line and
refuse to go to the next menu. Any idea ?

I was just posting because I couldn't get any of the nightly builds to
run previously, but can with the latest. At the moment it is working
with the current release v7. Main thing is that I can now play with
the nightly builds again. What I cannot tell, due to my lack of coding
skills, is whether it was an issue in slimnas or the source for
squeezecenter that gave me my problems.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-27 Thread Michael Herger
One thing I did notice, is with SlimNAS 99 and the final 7.0 SC load
the install process creates several directories in the slimnas folder
and leaves the squeezecenter dir empty (sometimes). Directories such
as VAR etc? I Don't recall seeing this in the beta 7.0 SC install.

that's fine. As SC can't write to /var etc. if FreeNAS is run write protected,
it's using its own folder.

I wrote this message just to say thanks to everyone that helped me with

misunterstandings all fixed with the creation of a folder called
slimnas, the exchange of the sufix of the files and finally, changing
the name of the folder where squeezecenter-7.0-noCPAN was installed
just to squeezecenter, and the 2 saves, the first one without mark the
enable boz and the second one with the enabled box marked, just after
rename the folder as I mentioned before. Special thanks to Bernst !!
Now I will do a portuguese tutorial for my friends here in Brazil...

I think I've worked out what needs to be changed...

I changed the 'tar xvf' to 'tar -zxvf' - it extracted everything for

and then i set a symlink of the new dir to squeezecenter

then i ticked enable and saved and rebooted.

I now have squeezecenter!

This issue has been reported several times before, but I still have no idea

there is nothing in the squeezecenter directory, so i removed the

Then I tried running the command via the console:

The 2 files with .tar extensions should have .tgz extensions. Try
renaming them:

slimnas.tar = slimnas.tgz
squeezecenter-7.0-noCPAN.tar = squeezecenter-7.0-noCPAN.tgz

Hi Michael, yes parrotnet is the group name. This userid/group
(sfraser/parrotnet) was created locally (with local authentication) on
the SlimNAS to allow for the SMB mounts to the freeNAS in order to move
the TGZ's and FLAC files over. This is my default user/workgroup for

I don't understand why this would interfere with SlimNAS? The creation
of the account is in addition to the default accounts and is only used
move files over? Are you suggesting a permission issue? If so, I could
use a default account? Could you suggest one, I am currently at work,
but if i recall, there were quite a few available?

By the way, thanks for all your efforts, I do appreciate your FreeNAS
app and your replies/help on this forum. It 's frustrating however when
it does not work, because i am not sure where to start debugging. I have
learned a bit about Unix and scripting over the last couple of months,
but issues like these tell me I have quite a bit additional learning
in front of me.

Thanks again,

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-24 Thread Default

Hi everybody,

I'm also experiencing some problems with slimnas right now...
After having read some posts in this forum I think I managed to get
slimnas to actually try to start. I had to copy everything to the
folder squeezecenter (from squeezecenter-7.0..blabla). Then I was
able to get the logfile which was previously not the case. It told me:

[08-03-24 19:56:11.2997] Slim::Schema::init (151) Warning: Creating new
database - empty database or database from 6.3.x found

[08-03-24 19:56:15.4469] Slim::Utils::PluginManager::enablePlugins

Slim::Plugin::InfoBrowser::Plugin-initPlugin: Can't call method
searchDirs on an undefined value at
/mnt/Disk/slimnas/squeezecenter/Slim/Plugin/InfoBrowser/Settings.pm
line 62.

Anyone got an idea what's going on there or better: how to get it
running? I already tried to chmod as seen in this post before but
that didn't help.

you can find the settings-file mentioned in the server log as a txt
attached

Thanks a lot

If SC is run as a user which can't even read its own files, you'll be in
trouble.

The problem with simplified systems is that you have to follow their way of
doing things. As soon as you start to fiddle with it, you risk to break things.
FreeNAS (and SlimNAS) tries to create a file server easily. But if you change
stuff it expects in its own way, you're likely to break it.

I'd recommend you try to create as clean and default install as possible, only
using FreeNAS tools to manage permissions etc.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-24 Thread Default

Yeah, as I said, disable enable solved the problem, connection
works.

Then I tried to somehow reproduce the problem and here is what I found
out:

To get the server running in the first place, I had to copy the data
from the automatically created folder squeezecenter-70-blabla into
the plain squeezecenter folder.
Then, I wanted to try an update so I downloaded 7.0.1 and upgraded via
the freenas webinterface. After that, squeezecenter was accessible
without problems. I checked the version in the squeezecenter webgui,
and it was the new 7.0.1 WITHOUT having to copy the new folder
squeezecenter-70-blabla to squeezecenter. Deleting the folder
squeezecenter still made the squeezecenter collapse. Then, recopying
squeezecenter-70-blabla to squeezecenter again fixed the problem,
server was again online. What surprises me now is that the webgui
showed 7.0.1 without having to manually copy the folder.

I know this sounds a bit confusing, but maybe it can help you
understand that problem.

One thing: I did the copying and renaming stuff from the shell of the

permissions. Tomorrow, if I'm not too busy, I will check if the same

As I said before, I understood the concept of Mout Point and shared
folder but please tell me why it happens this way for me:

My Mount Poit is Sobra and the share folder named teste. Sobra is a
partition in my disk (2) UFS on line.
I put all the Slimnas files in the folder teste using the windows
explorer.

Then I wrote a command line in FreeNas:

/bin/sh /mnt/Sobra/teste/slimnas-install.sh

and the answer was the command line repeated in the gray area:

$ /bin/sh /mnt/Sobra/teste/slimnas-install.sh

and then I wrote another command line, without the folder name:

/bin/sh /mnt/Sobra/slimnas-install.sh

and I got this answer in the gray area:

$ /bin/sh /mnt/Sobra/slimnas-install.sh
Extracting Perl and supporting files...
There has been a failure installing SlimNAS.

for me that message means that the program slimnas-install.sh was found
but did not work... is it true ? what am I doing wrong ?

If helps, these are the log (last 50)

Help with SlimNas !!!

Step by step I will tell you what I did and please, one expert tells me
where I made some mistakes and how can I repair it.

I Have all the screens in a file and I will try to do a PDF to attach
here !!!

1) First off all my FreeNas version is 0.686.3 It works ok, I can
reebot, log on and off - transfer files from and to any computer in my
network and it has 2 HDs - One with 2.8 gB and 2 partitions ad2s1 with
FreeNas and Ad2s2 with space for SlimNas and other Ad3p1 for my music
files and other files.

2) I got the slimnas version 0.99 and the slimnas-install.sh that are
in the same site -

http://www.herger.net/slim/detail.php?nr=1026

slimnas-0.99.tgz (SqueezeCenter 7.0 only!) (ca. 18MB)
slimnas-install.sh (ca. 2KB)

3) I got the last version of Squeezecenter 7.0-NOCPAN from

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=282097

4) I put all together in a shared folder created in the FreeNas
partition mounted, visible in the FreeNas web Gui and in the Windows
explorer

5) And them I went to the Advanced - Command in the FreeNas and did the
command as it is in the same Herger´s site above

6) The error message is:

$ /bin/sh /mnt/Reserva/slimnas-install.sh
Extracting Perl and supporting files...
There has been a failure installing SlimNAS.

So I start changing:
a)the file names of the SlimNas and/or slimnass-install.sh in different
versions (.tar - .tar.gz - .tgz)
b) 5 different versions of the squeezecenter 7.0 - NOCPAN all of them
in the same site with numbers 17126, 17139, 17600, 17707 and one with
no number - the newest one in the site.
c) the files itself (for old ones like SlimNas-0,92)
d) finally the name of the folder, from Reserva (the old one name) to
slimnas (like the original command)

8)I got always the same error message:
$ /bin/sh /mnt/slimnas/slimnas-install.sh
Extracting Perl and supporting files...
There has been a failure installing SlimNAS.

9) The only different message I got was when I wrote wrong command or
name of folder and nothing but the repeated command happened.

Please tell me where is my mistake ? What I will have to do to have it
working ? I read lots of posted comments, searching for a tip or
indication that would help me but nothing (not tryed yet) seems to me
to be helpfull

If I succeed I will write a Portuguese tutorial with pictures and
screens to my friends here in Brasil. Once again, please help-me

Best regards

I think you got the path wrong. I have a mount point named 250G and a
share named data with a folder named slimnas. All files are saved in
slimnas.

So the the command looks like this.
/bin/sh /mnt/250G/slimnas/slimnas-install.sh

Note that the sharename is not in the path, only the mount point name
and the slimnas folder. Not the share name.

Your commandline should look like this
/bin/sh /mnt/mount_point_name/slimnas/slimnas-install.sh

You find the mount point name in FreeNAS under Disks Mount Point.

For some reason Squeezecenter have Status failed on the settings page.
Squeezecenter runs fine anyway and always have.

It was the same with Slimserver. It shows Running if I do a clean
install but after adding a few plugins and restart it Show Failed again
even if Squeezecenter runs just fine.

It don't matter if disable or remove the plugins. It still shows
Failed.

It's no big deal but a little annoying.

The reason it shows failed is because it takes a long time for
SqueezeCenter to startup. I fyou wait 1-2 minuttes and then refreshes
the SqueezeCenter page it will show up.

Once again thank you and best regards

Is there any e-mail address to send the report to you - if you don´t
mind - as it is impossible to attach it here because of the size
(because of the image of the screens inside it) ?

which I have renamed to squeezecenter, but no difference.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-21 Thread sfraser

Ok, I did a fresh install of FreeNAS (686.3) and downloaded the official
release of squeezecenter (squeezecenter-7.0-noCPAN.tgz) and downloaded
Michaels latest SLIMNAS (99) earlier today. It installs fine but will
not run or start. I see no perl process in the process list. I have
tried changing the squeezecenter directory folder to a simple
sqeezecenter without the CPAN extention etc., but when I do that the
FreeNAS squeezecenter page states that it is not installed. The only
thing that i have done which might be out of the ordinary is when i
created the FreeNAS share I use a local sfraser userid and parrotnet
group name?

I am not that familier with Unix (yet!), and have been trying to follow
this thread, but got lost in the process. I would appreciate it if
anyone had any suggestions and or explanations!

P.S I have had earlier versions working including a beta version of
7.0, but had to expand the files on my Ubuntu workstation and then move
them over to the freeNAS directory. This does not seem to be required,
because the files seem to be there in expanded form after the freeNAS
install.

Thanks and Happy Easter ..if your so inclined.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-21 Thread PerLundborg

 I have Freenas 0.686 built on Tue Dec 25 15:38:50 CET 2007
 and squeezecenter-7.0-noCPAN.tgz, 03-Mar-2008 18:40
Are you using 0.99 of SlimNAS?

I hope so, at least i downloaded it, and have executed the script. The
mount point is starting to become a bit clogged up by now, so I'll try
to clear it out, for a clean restart.

I have not restated the nas as such, as suggested above, I'll give that
a try as well.

I think SlimNAS is missing a module which now is required. It's been
included with the official builds for a long time, providing better
encoding handling with non-latin stuff.

http://svn.slimdevices.com/trunk/server/Slim/Utils/Unicode.pm?rev=17825r1=16112r2=17825

I'll have to compile it for SlimNAS. There's more and more work to do...

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-14 Thread TechHome

SlimNAS/SC7.0 on FreeNAS 0.686.3 seems to be bulletproof. Just a couple
of minor quirks:

1. Still have to rename slimnas-0.92.tgz to slimnas.tgz
2. The SlimNAS installer installed SC7 into a folder named
squeezecenter-7.0-noCPAN that I needed to rename to squeezecenter
3. SC7 is incorrectly reporting that there is a new version of SC
available.
4. As stated earlier, the 7.0.1 nightly doesn't work

All in all, I'm very pleased and have a low-cost, simple reliable NAS
solution that supports scheduled shut-down and disc spin-down without
requiring a 2nd drive or flash drive for the OS.

PS: I was at EHX yesterday and visited the Logitech booth where the

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-10 Thread zoolap

I tried this with Freenas 0.686.2 and previous beta version (which I'm
running at home). 6.5 was working fine, but I noticed that
squeezecentre 7 was out on website, so I thought i'd give new one a
shot. I wiped out slimserver 6.5 folder on my home set up before going
with v7.

Here's my setup at home (note note hd0 hd1 are just fro reference, not
correct naming convention):
Hd0: Compactflash card (1Gb) via IDE to Compactflash adapter (runs
freenas)

Hd1: Fully formatted to standard GPT format and currently contains
several folders of flac albums. NOTE: Mount point, folder etc below
refer to this hard disk.

User Accounts:
user: slimuser
Group: slimgroup (slimuser belongs to this)

Service:
scp (sftp to upload files)

Mount point:
data

Folder (for slimserver/squeezecentre):
slimnas (owner is slimuser)

Downloaded following from Michael's page:
slimnas-0.92.tgz
slimnas-install.sh

Downloaded below file from slimdevices/logitech page:
squeezecenter-7.0.1-17830-noCPAN.tgz

Copied over the above three files to:

/mnt/data/slimnas

Renamed slimnas-0.92.tgz

I then go to the Advanced Command section and execute the command:

/bin/sh /mnt/data/slimnas/slimnas-install.sh

At this point I get message:

Extracting Perl Please open go your Freenas' main menu Have
Fun!

I Refresh browser, then I go to Squeezecentre option on left-hand
menu.

Then I get menu with Services: SqueezeCenter

Next to Install are two options:
* Keep existing
* squeezecentre-7.0.1-17830-noCPAN.tgz

I select squeezecentre-7.0.1-17830-noCPAN.tgz and click Save

I check everything has extracted via winscp.

Then select keep existing... check Enable button.

Wait a while and I still get message:

Status (SlimNAS Version v0.92)
Failed: SqueezeCenter is not available. Please note that it might take
a minute or more for the service to be available after a restart.
Please refresh this page to check the status again.

No amount of refreshing or rebooting fixes this.

Note I've also tried replicating my setup within vmware - creating 2
virtual disks (using 1st disk for installing freenas in embedded mode -
to emulate use on flash disk, and second disk for data and above
mentioned mount point and folder).

The following is shown under advanced command scripts

/usr/local/bin/php -f
/mnt/data/slimnas/usr/www/services_slimserver_init.php

If I execute this manually from the command section, I get:

$ /usr/local/bin/php -f
/mnt/data/slimnas/usr/www/services_slimserver_init.php
X-Powered-By: PHP/5.2.5
Content-type: text/html

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '*' in /usr/local/bin/php on line
1150

On this latest version of freenas, there is an extra box for PHP
command, but I have no idea what to enter here.

I've tried the chgrp and chmod ideas on my slimnas folder, but have
not got anything good out of it.

Michael - not moaning or anything, greatly appreciate your efforts and
would be most happy if i can get anywhere with this.

I did some more testing, focusing on ownership. I have a users group

The slimnas share I created had group wheel - I checked this with

I then reinstalled 7.01 according to the instructions and it worked
first time. I'm not sure if this is coincidental, but I'm happy now.

I have to accept the fact that I know nothing about *nix and have been
lucky thus far.

builds, but am a few thousand miles west of my SlimNAS testing environment. I
won't have access to it before next week - so please give me some time...

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-05 Thread TechHome

Michael,
I posted in the big thread:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40159page=6

and included a log, as you requested. My issue is not as severe since
SC7 does work on FreeNAS, just not reliably. When it comes up as
failed, sometimes a reboot gets it working, other times I have to
de-enable SlimNAS save then re-enable - save.

Ultimately, what would be best is an appliance like SlimNAS solution
that works as designed every-time. Thanks for your fine work and I'll
be patient as you work toward a solution.

From that log I don't see any sign of failure. Maybe it's just too big. But at
first sight it seems to be working fine. If you could upload a log right after
you attempted to start it and it failed, this might help.

There's some guy in the Netherlands who's selling (or at least used to do so)
pre-configured systems running SlimNAS...

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-05 Thread TechHome

Thx Michael,
I'm in the USA and have no issue building my own FreeNAS systems. This
particular box is a Asus VIA C3 terminator barebones $79 USD and it
works great irt FreeNAS, other than not supporting USB booting. My
issue is only with FreeNAS sometimes not starting.

This particular box is at a friend/client's home and is not yet
externally accessible. Next time I pay him a visit, I'll set the
FreeNAS router for external HTTPS access, so I'll be able to check on
it's health remotely. Once this is done, I'd be willing to also give
you access. Send me a PM if interested.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-05 Thread whatwho

I've exactly the problem as c0utter and frippera. (FreeNAS 0.686 and
first stable build of squeecenter).

Neither I have a log file, and I couldn't even manage to install
SqueezeCenter after changing slimnas dir's group to users.

By the way Michael, thanks for the work you did with SlimNAS so far.
Great job!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-05 Thread c0utta

whatwho,

I should explain further about my FreeNAS setup.

When I first installed FreeNAS (2006?) I created a single group called
users. I assign all users to this group - my FreeNAS is only used by
3 people, including myself (c0utta). I did notice on the latest FreeNAS
release that there are many other groups now (including wheel) but I'm
ignoring those at the moment. I logon as c0utta (not as admin) to
administer FreeNAS.

I created the slimnas folder using a Windows XP PC, which created the
slimnas folder with me (c0utta) as the owner and wheel as the group.
There were then many efforts to get SC7 running but to no avail. Then
I changed the group to users, followed Michael's instructions and SC7
was up and running within a minute.

This could be coincidental, but maybe there's something happening
because c0utta administers FreeNAS, is a member of group users and
the slimnas folder (through XP) has group wheel.

Clutching at straws, but you never know.

Cheers,

c0utta

c0utta, thanks for your eplain.

In your case it can be reasonable, but when I installed FreeNAS (just
to run slimserver) 2 months ago, I haven't changed anything at the
usermanagement. I reach the server on SMB with anonymous login, and I
use the web GUI with user freenas. So there can't be any differencies
between the user groups, I think :(

I’ve just rebuilt my NAS and have gone back to a clean installation of
FreeNAS 0.686.2 (revision 2891). Like frippera, I followed the
instructions but do not get a working SqueezeCentre 7.0 as I did under

Did you rename the slimnas file as mentioned before? Any error messages during
installation?

My problem still persists, I have also installed/uninstalled 4 or 5
times but with the same result. I cant get it to work.

What version ot SqueezeCenter/Freenas are you trying c0utta?

I tried, 17610 and 17779. And 0.686 and 0.686.2.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] FreeNAS + SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-04 Thread c0utta

Michael,

Yes, I renamed slimnas-0.92.tgz to slimnas.tgz. I do get a
SqueezeCenter menu entry on my FreeNAS console, so I know your install
instructions have worked properly. I also note that you added the
startup/shutdown entries into the Command scripts - thanks for doing
that.

Frippera, I have used the latest daily 17793 as well as the official
release 7.0
(http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/SqueezeCenter_v7.0.0/). I have
uninstalled 7.0 and have reverted back to 6.5.4 which works just fine.

Whenever I use any *nix variants, I always find that my particular
problems are related to permissions and ownership. Therefore, what
permissions are required for the slimnas share?

Thanks for your help.

4.) I then rename the file slimnas-0.92.tgz to slimnas.tgz and the
install script seems to work as I get:

Yeah, that's still necessary... I'll fix this soon.

7.) I wait about 5-10min and refresh the page but the status = failed
doesnt change. I try to enable and save but it doesnt get eny better. I
also try to reboot but that doesnt help either.

After the reboot, is the service still enabled? Do you see some log file in the
maintenance tab?

I have attatched 2 screenshots at the Command page after runing ps
ax. One is after install but before reboot and the other is after I
have reboot:ed.

As I see it, the service does not start up after reboot.

I cant find any maintenance tab, Diagnostics - Logs?

Which unfortunately doesn't answer my question: is the service still enabled
after reboot?

You'll find a second tab in FreeNAS' SqueezeCenter section, providing access to
the log file.
