Hmmm. I need to look into this a bit more then. When you listen on the
website it's obviously not WMA in the flash player, so other streams do
exist, and probably the same for when listening though Yle Areena app. I
would guess that they are AAC. If those URLs are directly accessible or

YLE mms services are not the old fashioned wma over mms oon port 1755
but wma over http on port 80 (which is supported by ffmpeg ).

1. Get an older version of mplayer than the one delivered by the
repository for 10.10.
2. Long time startup is just because mplayer fills its cache (IIRC
about 128k) before starting to send audio into SBS so if you are
playing a 32kbps stream it is a long time to start compared to a
320kbps

So it is just the mplayer version has changed ? or did SBS change as
well ?
Some builds of mplayer had problems with the buffer filling threads
they start.
Have you tried the old version of mplayer ?

I am running latest sbs 7.6 on Ubuntu 10.10 (on a Atom based box). I
use the Play Windows Media and Play Real plugin for transcoding.
However, during transcoding, mplayer is showing 100% cpu use.
Have you checked that your version of mplayer can play WMA stream and is
not a GUI version. Try the following command at a shell prompt

Update:
Playing the same url on SBS showed same 100% cpu usage for mplayer.
Playing the same url on mplayer directly only use 2-4% cpu

What has changed since it used to work ?
The 100% CPU may be caused by either mplayer waiting to be able to
deliver data to SBS so something may be blocking it.
