Re: Announce: Spicefly SugarCube Version 2.03 (Automatic MusicIP DJ) for 7.x

2021-11-18 Thread guptaas

After experimenting for many weeks, this is how I tweak Sugarcube. Hope
it saves someone some effort.
-Trackstat plugin for play counts and dynamic ratings
-Custom Scan plugin for MusicIP export. This is not needed by sugarcube
but helps make static playlists, for whatever purpose, using MusicIP
mixer (Windows only)
-I have needed MusicIP plugin to enable communication between MIP and
LMS. Nothing to do with Sugarcube.
-Set up a primary filter to exclude what you never want. e.g. Genre
contains-Speech, Christmas, Explicit etc. Ratings-*, ** etc. File-Path
to any undesired folder
-Use this filter as the first criterion for any more needed filters
-If no recipe is employed, MIP suggestions are controlled by the filter,
Mix Style and Mix Variety in the Player Sugarcube settings. Style seems
to be overlap of genres and variety seems to be the closeness of the
fingerprint. Go up on Style if abrupt genre shifts bother you. Go up on
Variety to dilute the MIP fingerprint match.
-The number of tracks requested is in Sugarcube Plugin settings.
Sugarcube using Trackstat will then select a track from this list based
on past plays and ratings. The MIP suggestions are in order of closeness
of match. If the total music collection is large and the request is for
many tracks, Sugarcube might get very far from the best MIP suggestions
because of stats. One can control that by limiting the number of tracks
requested.
-Net results are very dependent on the size of the music library and
stats. After using for about 2 months, I’m hardly seeing the best tracks
in my favorite genres but expect them to return back after I’ve played
or skipped (decreases rating in my setup) mediocre tracks

With the above setup, I have discovered the best way ever to
effortlessly use my library fully. All of that has been made possible by
the many wonderful developers and advanced users in these forums.

Auto-mix will use the settings you specify under the Player Settings
menu, its not related to the playing track. Its a preconfigured fast
play something and go method.

If you want to use the current playing track as a seed, enable "Dynamic
Queuing" under Player Settings menu and it will automatically queue the
next track for you but only if you are at the end of the playlist, using
the last track in the playlist as the seed, otherwise it will stay
quiet.

The ratings used are TrackStat ratings as used across LMS, nothing to do
with MusicIP ratings. You need to have installed TrackStat for this to
work, they basically sort the results and then pick the track so its a
bias tweak.

Re: Announce: Spicefly SugarCube Version 2.03 (Automatic MusicIP DJ) for 7.x

2021-07-29 Thread guptaas

After investing a lot of effort over many days, I have a large library
fingerprinted, a headless musicIP & LMS working on a Docker/Synolgy NAS
and love how musicIP comes up with an amazing sequence. Sugarcube
succeeds in taking it a step further but has been very- frustrating in
consistency-. Its simply amazing to see a perfect endless list which can
be kept going for 2-3 days. However, without any change in settings, the
same seed will lead to a list which has no connection whatsoever to the
seed the next time around. GUI for headless musicIP shows no problem.
Sugarcube Live view shows no communication problem but has a randomly
selected set which is related to itself but not the seed. Attempted
playing with SC settings for the player without any success. The
standard MusicIP app works just fine.

This leads to the second difficulty. There is -little information
available on the actual meaning of the buttons-. I have spent days
reading every single page on the Spicefly site. Am I missing a manual
right in front of my nose? Simple example - I can't make sense of the
drop down menu for Track Ratings and what to expect between
Disabled/lowest/highest when I can insert <2 right below it.
35373
I really don't want to give up on a wonderful way to use music
laboriously collected over decades. I'm sure this has been resolved
because the last discussions seem to be back in 2012, so I have
something wrong going on. This is all I think I have done inside LMS:

- Exported stats from CustomScan to musicIP for ratings. Successful in
including unrated songs as rating of 3.
- Changes in SC Plugin Settings: Enabled TrackStat and 'Christmas'
  block
- Changes in Player based SC settings: 'Always blocked artist' changed
to 'None', tried back and forth 'Mix by Song/Album', blocked tracks
  rated < 2

It's all good, everything seems to be working now, I feel better about
it.. One more issue I should mention.

Windows 10, installing MusicIP as a service... it works if you are
running LMS locally on the same machine.

However if LMS is on another machine you will need to go the windows
settings and create a rule to allow packets on the port 10002 to bypass
the firewall.

If using the GUI to serve 10002 this is not necessary, but found that
moving to headless requires a firewall rule. I did not see this in the
instructions so figured I would mention.

Just to add to what 33squeezebox_Fan mentioned, reading the patents a
while back MIP fingerprints by taking the source file and converting it
to a wav file before it does it's analysis. Therefore if you have
issues they are likely in that conversion step, maybe timeouts, beyond
the capabilities of the decompressor etc, so you could try using
something like https://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm to batch convert to
wav, then fingerprint and then copy the fingerprint back into the source
file.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

My collection has hundreds of 24-bit LP rips I have made over the last
several years. not to mention bluray dvd hdtracks etc.
To recode these to 16/44 would be a daunting task!

All of the files have been analyzed using MusicIP 1.9 on windows10, as
my understanding was this would be the only way to obtain the necessary
fingerprints at the outset.

So anyway. For now I have fired up the same MusicIP 1.9 on a dedicated
windows 10 with a full library and have enabled Spicefly Dynamic path
conversion to cooperate with a linux-based LMS.

just got it working.. will see how it goes.

Hello waltonb,

my experiance under Windows 10 and the latest MusicIP Version 1.96Beta6
is that MusicIP mixes diffrent Bit levels, but not very often.

So I had the same immpresion you have.

What I did to avoid it, I converted my 24 Bit or HighRes files to 16Bit
/ 44,1 kHz and let MusicIP analyze the 16 Bit files. Thereafter, I
copied the 16Bit Fingerprint Tag into the HighRes and 24Bit files.

By the way, I do it this way also for my DTS/DD-Wave-ALAC files ;-).
Converting to Stereo and put the Fingerprint back into the DTS-WAVE-ALAC
file, Otherwise I would never ever have mixes with DTS or DolbyDigital
Sound.

This way the mix works much better for me. Since, my HighRes or 24 Bit
files ar not to many, it was woth doing it that way.

2021-06-30 Thread waltonb

Hi Folks.

Lately I have been using spicefly sugarcube again after many years off
(v5.25). Everything works great except for one nagging issue.

It seems that once a mix is started with a FLAC file which is 24-bit,
the mix only selects 24-bit files going forward. So far I haven't seen
a deviation from this, nor has any fiddling of mix parameters affected
it.

I believe this is true for 16-bit CD rips too, i.e. 24-bit territory is
never ventured if the seed track is 16-bit.

I'm running headless MusicIP server on a linux host, should I be running
the windows headless instead? So far I have only used windows to do the
initial file analysis.

thanks for clues

-bruce.

Hi Bob,

Yes and No, the current version doesn't track the bleeding edge release.
Although I run it locally and use it pretty much every day, I leave it
a few months of no reported issues before moving the latest.xml
forward.

You can copy any link on the Version page and paste it into LMS plugin
repositories to grab whichever version you want, or if manually update;
the XML file shows the zip file location which you can download, extract
and replace all the files.

That said, I didn't realise that the install.xml was still on 5.22 so
I'll move that forward, thanks for the prompt!

Two reasons I can think of..

1) You have SugarCube selected as the provider in Don't Stop the Music
plugin
2) The player is in a sync group but isn't the master player, so the
changes you are making won't apply. In this case there is a warning
displayed in the standard LMS web interface with a message which advises
the master player, e.g; Warning Kitchen is a slave in sync group,

Ok, I'm happy to report that things have been going great and I have no
idea why. Anyway, this is a new problem that just cropped up yesterday.
I just added this album (Rising by Rainbow) and it's perfectly tagged
and analyzed just like every other file in my library but for some
reason, SC refuses to mix it. I tried re-analyzing and re-tagging, as
well as having MIP rebuild the entire db it but didn't help. Any ideas?

Don't know because I don't know exactly how the SugarCube selection
algorithm is supposed to work, but in the last sample when you created a
mix from a Blind Melon track there is an Aretha Franklin track in the
returned mix. So if the SugarCube logic just selects a random track
among those returned in the mix this could maybe explain what you are
seeing ?

My suggestion if you want to investigate this further is still to
contact cparker on his private forum so he (who knows how it's supposed
to work) can help you troubleshoot it.

The problem isn't Aretha Franklin being selected in a mix where the seed

And I've contacted cparker, let's see how that goes...

If I remember correctly, SugarCube adds one track at the time and use
the previous one to seed the next one.

So, if you get a SugarCube playlist as this (which you posted recently):
- Ride the Lightning by Metallica
- Caught In a Mosh by Anthrax
- Stop by Death Angel
- Row Of Crows by Chris Poland
- The Curse by King Diamond
- Dancing On The Edge by Badlands
- It Ain't Like That by Alice In Chains
- Deserted by Blind Melon
- The House That Jacks Buit by Aretha Franklin

SugarCube only uses Metallica for seeding Caught In a Mosh by Antrax.
And Caught In a Mosh is used for seeding Stop, and Stop is using
for seeding Row of Crows and so on ending with The House That Jacks
Buit being seeded based on Deserted by Blind Melon.

However, this is how it worked a long time ago when I used SugarCube
myself last, this might have changed in the recent version so SugarCube
uses the same seed track for multiple tracks and in that case the
current behavior looks a bit strange.

As far as I know SugarCube still works in this way. In the early days
the algorithm wasn't as solid as it is now, so I'd use the built-in
MusicIP mixing function to generate a basic seed mix, after which
SugarCube took over, mixing in a new track each time upon playing a
track of the seed mix. Now I just use the random music function, set to
give me 1 track, and I let Sugarcube handle it from there. It's quite
often that I don't need to shake out a new seed track for days on
end.
I've never seen behaviour like what Morbeas is experiencing. The only
glitch I have is the existence of the nearly identical tracks on
several different albums (initial studio album, various artists
compilation, artist compilation, live album) that sometimes get played
with for instance just one song between them, sometimes even jumping
back forth, but that doesn't disturb me enough to bother CParker with
it.
Given that Morbeas seems to have this issue solely with Metallica-based
mixes, I'd suggest that he re-rip his albums and analyse them all over
again. I'd even be willing to put my files on dropbox or some other
service for him to try out in his system.

I still think what you are seeing is how it is designed to work. The
reason it happen more often in your library might just be because your
library contains different albums than bakker_be's. If you only want to
listen to the same type of music you shouldn't use SugarCube, the
purpose of SugarCube is that it will not stay within the genre, it will
walk away into other genres, sometimes faster and sometimes slower and
there is no way to know in advance exactly where it will end up because
there is a random element involved.

As bakker_be said previously there could possibly be something wrong
with the analysis MusicIP has done previously on some of your tracks,
causing it to switch genre faster in your library, but it could also
just be the composition of your library that are causing it. Re-ripping
the albums and re-analyze them with MusicIP might be a solution but I'm
personally not sure it's going to change anything.

Re: Announce: Spicefly SugarCube Version 2.03 (Automatic MusicIP DJ) for 7.x

2012-06-15 Thread bakker_be

I'll admit this could drive someone crazy :D
Let's go over this playlist:
Metallica - Anthrax = OK by me
Anthrax - Death Angel = still OK
Death Angel - Chris Poland - King Diamond = can't comment on hat one,
don't know Chris Poland
King Diamond - Badlands = still get it, it's softer than most of the
previous ones, but that's because King Diamond is so very Judas Priest
influenced
Badlands - Alice in Chains = still OK by me
Alice in Chains - Blind Melon = seems a stretch to me, but I'm not
really familiar with them
Blind Melon - this particular Aretha song = I'm afraid it's acoustical
analysis (which is what MusicIP is all about) is probably somewhat
similar, especially as
Aretha - Billy Joel actually again makes sense to me.
Have you looked if somewher in that sequence MusicIP (and hence
Sugarcube) didn't find a match to the playing song and queued a random
one? I'd guess that to be the case, but if it isn't, just let this mix
continue for a while, even if it isn't what you're really in the mood
for right now.
In my experience, MusicIP mixes, generated continuously by Sugarcube,
tend to go in waves: e.g. if you start with some really uptempo song, it
will gradually slow down, just to pick up the pace again later on. When
I'm home alone, I unblock all genres, and I've had it go from Meshuggah
all the way to Elvis Presley and back up to Children of Bodom, which at
first glance may seem strange, but when taking the time to really
compare things like key, signature, passion, rythm, ... of the song the
individual steps actually make sense.
I know this doesn't really help you if you want to create a metal
related mix, but that's wher the blocking of certain genres comes in
handy, although I too feel like more than 3 would be welcome, as
sometimes i'd like to let it loop through exactly that. Maybe it's
possible with moods or recipes first created in MusicIP mixer, but I
don't know.
As an aside: this playlist clearly indicates Metallica isn't metal
anymore ;)

Re: Announce: Spicefly SugarCube Version 2.03 (Automatic MusicIP DJ) for 7.x

2012-06-15 Thread Morbeas

I would completely agree except that this progression of (not
necessarily in this order) Anthrax, Alice In Chains, Blind Melon,
Aerosmith, Aretha Franklin, Badlands, Billy Joel always comes up in all
mixes within the first 5 songs. I mean I do agree and enjoy a slight
variation (which is why I have my variation setting at 2) but not within
5 songs! I'm thinking it should take more like 100 songs for it to go
from Anthrax to Aretha Franklin. Otherwise if all I wanted to listen to
was metal, I certainly would not go through this hassle and just use my
NAS' built-in audio application and have it pick random tracks from any
given genre. To me, that's not what this is about, though. I do want
it to go from Meshuggah to Pink Floyd to Miles Davis and back up to A
Perfect Circle to AC/DC to Pantera etc. Isn't it this exact thing what
the variety setting is supposed to be controlling?

Again, I'm so incredibly frustrated with this thing. I pretty much
spend most of my disposable time trobleshooting this thing. It's become
an unhealthy obsession! To make matters worse, I'm in the computer
industry myself and can usually fix things like this with relative ease
(hell you can almost perform heart surgery these days with instructions
found by simply properly searching Google). :)

Anyway, I'm now going to give Erland's above suggestion a try and see
where that takes me. What took me over the edge today was that it
worked flawlessly when I was testing it for a few hours. I started with
all kinds of genres and let it go for 15, 20 tracks and it was just
perfect! LOL I don't know why but the whole thing took a dump just as I
was typing a thank you message to you and Erland and wanted to show it
off by taking a screenshot and posting it here! :)

And about Metallica, they're the band that got me into metal in the
first place back when I was 13 so I can't help but have a soft spot for

What happens if you in the MusicIP application creates a few mixes from
the Blind Melon track ?
Is the Aretha Franklin track part of any of the mixes it produce based
on the Blind Melon track ?

I don't know exactly how SugarCube logic works and it's hard to tell
because it's not possible to look at the code as it's obfuscated, but if
it requests a mix from MusicIP with x number of tracks and just picks a
random track from the mix result to add to the SBS/LMS playlist the
switch from Blind Melon to Aretha Franklin might not be that
unrealistic. I suspect this isn't really an error, I think it might just
be that acoustic analysis works this way so even if your brain think
they aren't similar the acoustic analysis algorithm in MusicIP might
think there are some similarities.

My suggestion if you want to investigate this further is to switch to

think he primarily uses his own forum to handle support to users, this
thread is mainly here to make it possible for community members to help
other community members. cparker has access to the non obfuscated code
and knows how the logic is supposed to work, so it would probably be a
lot easier for him to help you troubleshoot it.

Could you try to do the same by clicking the M button beside the
Blind Melon track in SBS/LMS web interface and then click MusicIP
Mix to ensure Aretha Franklin isn't returned when you create mixes from
Blind Melon through the Logitech MusicIP plugin.

I'm really confused now because on the Sugarcube page FAQ, it states

What's the full path to the music files ?
I'm asking because I know some MusicIP versions have had issues with
path's containing non US ascii characters, is there any accented
character or other uncommon character in the music file paths that could

A few albums do have songs with non-US ASCII characters but it's a very

had a corrupted MusicIP database and rescanned the whole lot.

Mixes were good before, but now they're even better more consistent,
which is probably due to the combination of the complete rescan (LMS +
MusicIP) and the updated selection algorythms in SC.

OK, default settings there, nothing strange in your per player
settings.
Would it be asking too much to stop the MusicIP headless service LMS,
rename the default.m3lib (found in
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\MusicIP\MusicIP Mixer) to
something else and let the MusicIP Mixer rescan your collection. After
scanning select all files, right click and choose Archive Analysis,
this will make future scans quicker. Restart the MusicIP headless
service and go to the web page, reload the cache. Restart LMS and enable
the MusicIP plugin (I've always had it active, I used already before
Sugarcube existed). Set it like this:
'[image: http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/6217/sc07.png]'
Now Clear library and rescan everything.
Fingers crossed, it should work perfectly now :)

Theoretically speaking it shouldn't have any consequences, as all data
is also saved into the MusicIP database (default.m3lib), which is where
the mixing system gets all data. I think your problem is caused by a
combination of factors: adding music to the MusicIP database through the
MusicIP Mixer, while at the same time listening to music autoqueued by
Sugarcube. Since playcount and last played time are written back to the
DB, this could cause conflicts, depending on how it deals with file
locks.

Does the MusicIP headless service use the same library as the MusicIP
application ?
If they use different libraries and it's only the one used by MusicIP
application that is updated, that could explain the issue.
I have a vague memory that I've seen someone that had some issue where
the GUI application didn't use the same library as the headless version
which were used by SBS.

What I would do before trying archive analysis is to:
1. Setup MusicIP plugin in SBS according to bakker_be previous post
2. Restart SBS and make sure MusicIP headless is running before SBS is
started
3. Perform a full rescan in SBS
4. Try the M icon and the MusicIP Mixer link to see if it returns
the expected result

If point 4 doesn't return expected result it means that the issue might
still be with the MusicIP library.
If point 4 returns the expected result I would be very surprised if
archive analysis makes any difference.

The reason I advise to archive is mainly for speed in the case of
needing to rescan. For morbeas' collection that's not yet an issue, but
I can assure you it makes a huge difference on mine (67K tracks). I
think that he'll be set with a rebuild of his DB, provided that in the
future he's careful in adding music.
My workflow is rather elaborate, but it works for me:

1a. Buying physical, digital or bootleg torrents for my live music
needs
1b. Ripping to FLAC in Mediamonkey
2. MusicBrainz tagging in Mediamonkey
3. ReplayGain scanning tagging in Foobar2000
4. DynamicRange scanning in Foobar 2000
These steps are all performed outside of the library folder.
5. Moving to library folder with Mediamonkey
6. Shutdown of all music services
7. Add music to MusicIP Mixer, analyse archive analysis
8. Restart MusicIP headless and reload cache
9. Restart LMS and scan for new and changed

As for Spyglass, I actually have it but never really used it. Can you

It's pretty self-explanatory: you start it up and walk through it from
top to bottom. It will allow you to check the state of all components in
the chain, and indicate whether there are any problems. If there's a
problem you have the possibility to uninstall and reinstall the
problematic component.

Good to know. I haven't needed it in ages (way before LMS in any case),
since I've got everything running quite stable. That's about to change
though: I'm planning to migrate my whole setup to Windows Server 2012 RC
in a couple of weeks, as well as adding several TB of storage :)

Ok, here are some Live View shots:

First (seed) song is Becoming by Pantera, which, if you're a metal fan

So within 3 songs, we went from Pantera to Audioslave, which is barely
hard rock. What am I supposed to be looking at in the Live View window
exactly? In the first screenshot, all the recommended songs by MIP seem
to be OK but for some reason Sugarcube goes in a totally different
direction. To be perfectly honest, even picking MX by Deftones right
after Becoming is not acceptable, but at least it's in the same genre.
Unfortunately though, it all goes downhill from there.

Morbeas wrote:
Standard M icon? Can you please elaborate on that?

If you browse into My Music/Artists in the SBS/LMS web interface you
should see a M icon to the right of the artist name. Click on that and
on next page you should see a MusicIP Mix icon that creates a mix of
music similar to the artist using MusicIP. This is more or less the same
thing as SugarCube does continuously, so it would be interested to see
if these mixes also return strange results or if the strangeness is only
limited to how SugarCube uses MusicIP. The same M icons are also
available beside albums and tracks, it's worth to try it on all levels.

To see the MusicIP Mix icon it's important to enable the MusicIP plugin,
there is Use MusicIP option in it which you should set to either Only
read mixable status (preferred) or Import all data (not preferred
unless you are already using that setting). I think it's also important
that MusicIP is started before SBS/LMS is started for the MusicIP Mix
link to appear and if you have had it disabled previously you might have
to perform a rescan in SBS/LMS for it to appear.

The main reason for testing the MusicIP Mix link is to be able to see
if the problem might be related to MusicIP or if it's isolated to how
SugarCube uses MusicIP, this will make it easier to troubleshoot the
issue further.

As a side note, have you tried to create a mix directly in the MusicIP
application to make sure that works better than SugarCube ?

- Win XP, 7.7.2 - r33893

Morbeas, if your mixes are always ending up with Aretha, try these
settings, start with Server Settings/Spicefly SugarCube/ and set the
MusicIP Request No. of Tracks to 10.
Then Settings/Player/Spicefly SugarCube

 As for the troubleshooting link:

1 - I went to http://localhost:10002/api/mix? to check the MusicIP

 specified in the settings.
2 - I checked Sugarcube history and it shows 0 songs like the above
poster. Though that is probably due to the fact that I uninstalled and
reinstalled LMS in my frustration to get Sugarcube working. That, of
course, did not help. I have since played several songs and they still
did not reflect in Sugarcube history. But it definitely works as it
picks the songs as it gets to the last song of any playlist. So it
 definitely functions.
3 - I never had any MIP filters on so that step does not apply.
4 - I turned off TrackStat and the result is the same.
5 - I'm meticulous about my music collection so my tags are perfect.

Should I record a log maybe and post it here?

Update: It seems to work for a few songs if I change server settings but
then it goes right back to picking its favorite songs all over again.

Have MIP headless server scanned the library too ( not only the MIP gui
) ? you are supposed to point to the path where the music is (same path
as LMS uses ) and use the refresh button .
You do that here http://server-ip:10002/server

If MIP Gui and MIP server runs on the same machine it is then possible
to transfer mip gui's result to the MIP server I have not used that so I
can't say how that is done ,but I saw it described somewhere in Cparkers
sugarcube documentation or our wiki

Think the QNAP issue is bottomed out. Under heavy stress the CPU does
not have enough spare to run the SQLite db calls. The default SQLite
