Re: [PEDA] Problems with schematic annotate function. Fixed!
Fabian, your email popped up on my desktop just as I was coming to write a reply to all who helped. I am back in operation, all symptoms have disappeared. I can print, generate a BOM and annotate. Seems the problem was related to one or more corrupt *.bpl or *.dpl files. Protel Tech support emailed me this morning with what turned out to be the solution. A new procedure for a "clean" re-install. I have copied it below, note the line stating to delete all *.bpl & *.dpl files, this is new. July 5 2002 Protel 99SE Complete Uninstall.(New version emailed from Lori Quevedo) Version # Protel 99SE/ Service Pack 6: PROBLEM: Is there a specific uninstall procedure for Protel? I have uninstalled and reinstalled using add and/remove programs but Protel is still acting up. SOLUTION: 1) Un-install Service Pack 6 for 99SE 2) Un-install 99SE 3) Delete the Design Explorer 99 SE directory (make sure you have no personal files or libraries stored here before you do this). 4) Delete the files *99SE.* from your Windows or Winnt folder 5) Also delete from the Windows or Winnt folder *.bpl and *.dpl, if they are still remaining. 6) Re-install Protel 99 SE a) If Win 9x then Reboot 7) Re-apply Service Pack 6 a) If Win 9x Then Reboot Good Luck and pass this along so others are not bitten by the same issue(s). I also raised the issue with Tech Support about their phones, etc., having no indication that they were open or closed yesterday. To complicate issues, they were also holding a company picnic Wed. afternoon with no indication that they were "closed". So 1.5 days without Tech Support or any indication that they were or were not there, pretty shabby. Wake up Protel Management! Sincerely, Brad Velander. Lead PCB Designer Norsat International Inc. Re: [PEDA] Problems with schematic annotate function.
Brad, I may be shooting in the dark, but I have seen Protel problems that were network loading related. It is possible that a time out could occur and the software would complaint about a non-exist resource. It may not report it this way, all the same. I always run my computer lean on background resources. This I profess has created my infamous system stability. Jumping the gun and not waiting for Protel to die down before jumping to read mail has given me 'hang-aches'. Alas, a wounded registry/driver is another mother of a f ^ 's. I found the demoing of some trials to be an entertaining curse. Our printer runs directly off our server. I suppose if I was so riddled, I would install 99SE on that and see if was a link problem. We have been using HP8000 stuff here as gear and this works flawlessly... at least to me. Just my two cents Take care. Fabe Fabian Hartery Research Engineer, B. Re: [PEDA] Problems with schematic annotate function.
don't laugh - but can you successfully print to a physical printer? BTW, on a vaguely related topic, on one machine we never did solve the 'compact on close' problem either, tried everything finally turned off 'compact on close' and it is ok now (except for not being able to compact on that machine) i have the feeling that this too is some windows component conflict, but i can't track it down for the record the 'compact on close' problem is: the protel session disappears (quits, vanishes) _sometimes_ (often) at the beginning of the compact process if any other DDBs other that the current one were open with unsaved work, that work is lost a file is left behind *.CMP which i assume is a temp file for the compaction process Dennis Saputelli Brad Velander wrote: > > Jan, > was sure that I had tried with only Protel running yesterday but > tried again right now anyway. Re: [PEDA] Problems with schematic annotate function.
Hi Brad, I can't help with your issue, but I wanted to share a problem with this group that might surprise you. As most of you know, I have been having a hell of a time with the 3D stuff in Protel. Not the lack of model editing, that's still a problem, but rather with the actual 3D performance. Last night, I stuck another harddrive in my computer and put WinXPPro on it. I then installed Nvidia's Twinview driver stufff, OfficeXP and Protel99SE. Guess what? The 3D stuff works perfectly now! It's fast, clear, and all the stuff I was complaining about is gone regarding performance. Even John's Qualecad 3D viewer completely works. This really surprised me because it's the same damn hardware...just a new, clean OS install took away the problems. I don't suggest anyone totally redoing their OS or system, but more importantly we shouldn't automatically point the finger at Protel when Protel software doesn't work. In the example I just cited, it had nothing to do with them. Something else in my system was f*ckin' up Protel's (and Qualecad's) ability to do its thing... > -Original Message- > From: Brad Velander [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Thursday, July 04, 2002 9:37 AM > To: Protel EDA Forum List Server (E-mail) > Subject: [PEDA] Problems with schematic annotate function. > > > Good day all, > > > ATS Support rant: > well so much for our much talked about, much improved ATS support. > Called yesterday at 3:45pm, still have not heard anything today. Re: [PEDA] Problems with schematic annotate function.
Hi Brad - Sometimes a .dll file fails to properly register when installed. The result is that the applications that need it can't find it. You can manually register the file using REGSVR32. Take a look at the Microsoft information at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q249873 The above link tells you how to do the manual registration procedure. Give it a try and see if it fixes your problem. Jan, was sure that I had tried with only Protel running yesterday but tried again right now anyway. Same result. Normally I have Outlook running for email, sometimes a bunch of other apps as well, never saw this problem before yesterday. I am beginning to think that there is some relationship to a W2K function that is missing or a bad version for Protel's use. But how do you find it? Thanks for the suggestion though. [PEDA] Problems with schematic annotate function.
Good day all, ATS Support rant: well so much for our much talked about, much improved ATS support. Called yesterday at 3:45pm, still have not heard anything today. I assume they are shut-down for the holiday but there is absolutely no indication of such calling through any Protel NA telephone number, sounds like business as usual, shunted to a message system. Where is this improved ATS, they can't even publish the direct ATS support number on their web page after more than 8 months. I think that we are surely getting our proof that the ATS is the same old shit except they want us to pay $1500USD annually for it. My present Problem: I have a very repetitive problem plaguing me in schematic right now. This has persisted across several "clean" re-installs (yes, I deleted all the protel file remnants before each re-install). Every time I click on "Annotate" I get a pop-up error window titled "Access violation at address 40028A2B in module 'Vcl50.bpl'. Read of a...". Within the window it states, "Exception Information: Exception Occurred In SCH:Annotate" with the two button choices of "Ignore" or "Quit". As I said, I have re-installed 3 - 4 times and this still persists. Any ideas? On the very first occurance I checked the harddrive for the VCL50.bpl file, it was not on the drive. This initiated the re-installs. Each re-install since has found the file in my C:\WINNT\System directory after that first re-install. Running W2K, P99SE SP6. Sincerely, Brad Velander.
