Dilwyn,

Would anyone be willing and able to help us with this? I'll gladly send
a CD copy of the Windows version to anyone willing to help.

Bung me over the CD then please and I'll see what works and what
doesn't. I have access to XP running in an emulator on this laptop plus
OpenSuse 11.2 64 bit, OpenSuse 11.3 32 and 64 bit, OpenSuse 11.4 64 bit,
Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.5 64 bit, Linux Mint 10 64 bit, PCLinuxOS 32
bit as well.

I can even, god forbid, install Ubuntu as well - just to make sure I
cover the popular versions. Oh, ok, Fedora too then, if I must!

:-)

Cheers,
Norman.

Managed to get uQLX working on Ubuntu etc. I don't know what NET_peek

Part of the reason the uQLx has not been so seamless is that it supports
a variety of Unix systems on a variety of CPU's. To make it seamless, a

At the moment, with QL On A Stick you can copy the CD to a USB pen,
then plug it into a PC with Windows and it will just go, no fiddling
with settings etc. (unless you really want to change something!)

Can this be done with Linux systems? Is there any way of putting uQLx,
QLay for Linux, or even QPC2 demo with/without WINE such that users
like Bryan can just have an uQLx (or whatever) on that pen drive, then
just plug it into any computer with Linux, mount the drive if

Odds are it can be done. Most of the QL emulators can be run as simple

a bit of a stretch. I would first start with the native apps.

I am looking at uQLx on linux... Just because it can be so small that any
box that can boot from the stick can be that.

However, I'm also looking at it from the POV that architecture matters a
little and weighing up Intel vs. ARM performance. It'll be a slow project
due to zero finances, but if I can contribute anything back, I will,

Given the nature of installing programs on Windows to run them, I can
imagine creating a QL-on-a-stick for Linux would be fairly easy. The
device would just need to be mounted (automount might do this with a USB
Drive) and then apps would be directly from the USB drive.

The USB drive can be formated for Windows (MS-DOS) and be mountable, so
the whole thing could be created from a Windows box and then tested with
Linux.

With DosBox, QPC1 could be made to run. Wasn't there a version of QLAY

Re: [Ql-Users] QL on a stick

2007-10-11 Thread Dilwyn Jones
Run directly, with two small exceptions - the QLay2 emulator needs to
have timing set for the host computer. It just means running one
simple SuperBASIC program which tells you how much you have to change
the default speed value to get QLay2 to run at the right speed.

The version of QemuLator supplied is a shareware version. This is
limited ot running at the speed of a standard QL with up to 384K of
RAM. Registering it with its author (cost of $40) gets you a
registration code you enter to unlock many (and I mean many) more
features. Unfortunately, as the emulator stores the registration code
in the computer's registry, this number needs to be entered on every
PC it's plugged into (and I hope users will be considerate and
unregister it to clear the entry from anyone else's PC's registry once
you've finished using it on that PC).

Apart from that no setup. Do bear in mind that I supply it on CD, so
that you choose your own USB pen drive rather than be restricted by
any I choose to supply.

Not yet, there will be on some information on my website later in the

Basically, it's a CD containing 3 emulators for Windows (QLay2,
QemuLator shareware version and QPC2 demo version). It also contains a
few sample QL programs (Turbo, Go!, S_Edit editor, and a text file
viewer) plus a couple of Windows utilitities (WXQT2 PC-QL file
transfer and QStripper for converting Quill DOC files to
text/html/PDF/Docbook XML).

QLay2 comes complete with a couple of DOS/Windows programs to help
with file transfer between QL and PC as well.

The idea is that you copy the CD to a USB pen drive of your choice
(minimum free space needed on the pen drive is about 80MB, so a 128MB
or greater USB pen drive is recommended. Once that's done, you can
carry it around with you to plug into any PC with a USB port, so you
have a truly portable QL you can carry around with you on a keyring
if you wish!

The CD version is available from me for 5 pounds, including UK
postage, or add £1 for overseas postage. It will be available from
Darren Branagh at Q-Celt Computing in Ireland, although I don't know
if he intends to supply it on CD to keep costs down and allow people
to choose their own pen drive, or if he intends to try to find a cheap
source of drives to supply them completely ready to go.

The QL On A Stick CD was formally launched at the Quanta workshop in
Birmingham last saturday and quite well received - I issued several
copies at the show and review copies are with QL Today, although I
don't know if Quanta actually got their review copy in the end, it got
a bit hectic at one stage! (John Gilpin - if reading this can you let
me know if you got a copy for review on saturday).

Hope that helps for now, until I get the info files in place on my

Is there more information somewhere about the QL-on-a-stick?

I used to work for CMS Peripherals here in Ireland and I recall Roy

could get a few at bargain prices. I still have a few good mates
there and could get them at near to cost. Is there any interest?

Hi Darren,

Nice to hear you back on this list again ... :-)

It would be worth getting hold of the USB 128MB Sticks if you can get a
bargain bundle of them.

I already have a 512MB and now a 2GB one, yet one dedicated to the QL
would also be fine.

PS - If you can listen to Radio 4 on Mondays around 9.45AM there is a
certain Irish musician reading his Autobiography.

I think the period of intending to supply them on USB sticks is gone.

This is why I put it on a CD - people can copy it to a USB stick of
their choice rather than be held to a 128MB or 1GB or whatever size we
choose.

Darren - remember to send me your current address so I can send you
your copy.

Would there be any mileage in offering a QL on stick as a special offer
in that issue? Depends on the software to be included - of course.

Dilwyn has kindly provided QL Today with a review copy of a QL on a stick.

This is just the CD which you have to copy to your own USB memory stick.

Would anyone be interested in doing a review for QL Today?

Ideally we would like to publish in issue 2, which has a deadline of
15th November,

OK, I could do that.
