Re: [QUAD-L] Weather

2015-08-17 Thread Don Smith
I've had the same issue here in Calif. most recently when a transformer
blew. My low air loss bed didn't loose any air. I have an eggcreat. under
it and a thick plastic mat from a previous beb between the springs and
eggcreate. power was out for three hours, I took a nice nap.

On Thu, Aug 13, 2015 at 4:11 PM, greg g...@eskimo.com wrote:

We had a huge storm 2 nights ago. 5 minutes after I go to bed, a big crack
and power goes out. It was a micro burst. We get these small, but
powerful wind bursts. Knocked over 5 or 6 power poles, lots of trees, some
tipped over with the root ball, others split in half.
I use a circulating air mattress so the motor goes out. I can't lay long
on the wrinkled up plastic. So I had to get up.
Luckily earlier that week, I was thinking what would I do if the motor
burned up. So I bought a 6 inch thick memory foam mattress, tat I could use
in a pinch. It arrived earlier that day.
My bed is too tall for my lift if I leave it under my regular mattress, so
it was still wrapped up in the garage. I had to get up and switch them.
But going to bed with no TV or light of any kind. It's is hard for me. So
I turned my Kindle on. Luckily it was only out for 4 hours. Others were out
 more than 24 hours.
I'd go to a hotel if my power was out that long.

 Larry,

I am my C5 25 years post, and I been on cruises many times. I would like
to think that the airlines have gotten better in caring for power chairs
and their passengers. Sadly, it is an adventure in and of itself.

Cruise ships especially the new ones, are wonderful in handicap
accommodations. Handicapped rooms are half again the size of a regular room
allowing for room to maneuver the wheelchair. Get a room with a balcony.
The newer ships allow you access to a balcony so you can actually look at
the flying Fish. Elevators are large enough for a power chair to enter and
 turn around to exit.

I recommend you Google to find instructions on how to get the most out of
flying. Do not read posts older than two years because I don’t think
 they’ll be relevant.

A caveat: I have had nightmarish experiences with airlines. Breaking
chairs, leaving chairs at places of embarkation (I once flew from Vancouver
to Newark, first-class bulkhead seats). My wife exited the plane and was
told that my Permobil did not make the flight! There I sat on the empty
plane in a first-class seat while the cleaning crew was preparing the
flight to England. On second thought, I should have just stayed on the
plane. It worked out and I got my $13K back from Continental for my family
group’s round-trip airfare by writing they had ruined my Alaskan vacation.
 Boo-hoo boo-hoo.

You have time. Detailed planning and understanding what to do on each leg
of the itinerary should allay your fears and help you to enjoy the trip of
 a lifetime.

 Bon voyage

Being a quad, especially when I was younger I always wanted to solve the
problem of staying cool above 85 degrees. I always thought of making something.
I had this idea of a plastic cap like a membrane( goes on your head) that could
hold water and have little holes on the bottom side It would have a tube going
to to a water reservoir and a egg shaped pump you could press on to push the
water from the reservoir, up the tube in the hat and out the holes onto the
whole surface of your head.  You could disguise this device with a ballcap or
boonie hat. It would immediately cool you down with a couple pumps. maybe even
find a better way to activate the pump without pushing. Would be so valuable. I
use a mini hairspray bottle to cool me off. nobody gets the fact that quads
don't sweat. Nobody ever believes me. They want to have a 30 minute
conversation with me in the blazing sun.

Yeah, my 1st chair in 1982 did 11-12 mph. 21st Century. They are still there
and look the same. Large back wheel, belt driven.
I was told my insurance did not cover those.

I just found the Quickie S636,it was listed as 8mph with larger motors.

Permobil has a cool 9mph one, not covered, but it's way cool. The whole front
end slides out an extra 10 inches or so for speed stability.

My provider told me they use to wave the 20% co-pay, but insurance's contrates
made them stop doing it.

I'd love to bring one to custom chopper place.
What would you have them do to your chair?

low-carb diet. I have the same issue with my belly pressing down my bladder and
causing issues. I use an abdominal binder so what even makes it worse.

I been doing very moderate dieting over the last week or so and haven't really
lost too much, but I'm going to be a little more aggressive in the coming
weeks. If I  lose about 5 pounds I will feel considerably better.

Well, when I first was injured and came home I was weak as a kitten and
needed something to give me the energy to build myself up. Each day I would
strap my belly bag on with my Walkman and plenty of water and hit the streets
to wheel as far as I could. At first I couldn't make it a quarter mile and if
I fell over I couldn't get back up. I went to GNC and started buying ripped
fuel. I would take 2 capsules and hit the streets and within a few months I
was doing 3+ miles a day with energy to spare. Not only did I increase my
stamina, but I was able to maneuver my chair better and get myself up and
down. This allowed me to be able to start swimming at the YMCA, which led me
to be able to drive a fullsize Ford Van with standard paraplegic hand
controls. I kept taking it b4 I entered the pool or any workout. I was able
to bench 150 on an Olympic weight bench with quad hands and use the sci-fit
bike for an hour after swimming an hour in the pool. What
really messed me up is after all my working out, lifting, wheeling and biking
I developed a spinal syrinx then my appendix burst, then got a hernia. I
believe that all those issues can be linked to my vigorous workouts. At the
same time though when I went down in the hospital, I was able to come back
because of the good shape I was in. I still take one ripped fuel capsule
w/ephedra b4 a I handcycle or wheel. You can take it without working out, but
it makes you a little jumpy sometimes. you have to buy it from a special
website called neutri I believe, but I will get you the actual website. some
people are scared of ephedra, but it is like anything else..if you take six
capsules at once you will have a problem. They have another pill called a
yellow devil which is more ephedra, but I wouldn't suggest that.

public hanging or the injection, and no crying about the pain from the needle,
then 24 hours later do it.

Today is 41 years ago at 4:15 I was trying to learn to do jumps on a 250
Kawasaki notarized dirt bike. I went with n old boyfriend to watch him, he was
very good. Then he decided that I should learn, I told him I didn't want to. We
had taken my Mom out for lunch and the last thing she said to me as she looked
at the dirt bike tied down in the back of his van I don't want you riding that
thing. So, I reminded Eddie as he was attaching the helmet onto me ... for
the first time I want to do something my Mother told me to do. But he wouldn't
hear of it.
He showed me how the gas and break worked and then I started zipping around
very sloppy. Then I accidental went over a jump, the bike flew ... I loved it,
I was hooked. I asked him How can I make this bike go higher and faster over
the jump? He said When the front wheel hits the jump, give it all the gas.
So I backed up, looked at my watch 4:15.  This is the only time I'm going to
try this because I promised Mom I'd pick up my sister Patti and bring home my
sister DeDee's girlfriend because we were on Easter break from school. I was 17
a junior in high school Patti was 16 a sophomore and DeeDee was 14 in 8th grade.
So, over the jump I went but when the front wheel hit the jump I FORGOT to lift
the handle bars up. SHIT! I knew right then and there I did something wrong.
I ended up flying through the air, in slow motion, at 30 miles an hour on till
I hit the side of a very large jump head on. While I was in the air I knew when
I hit the ground I was going to either die instantly or break my neck and be
paralyzed for life. I landed on my left side, when I opened my eyes I saw the
dirt and thought I was buried until Eddie came and turned me onto my back.
He said Are you alright? I told him immediately No, I broke my neck. Call an
ambulance and get me a blanket because I'm in shock.
It was so very, very strange. How could I possibly know that I broke my neck?

hood. It connects to your battery. You run the plug outside your grille. When
you want to charge just plug it in and it will automatically stops charging
when the battery is full. Cost was 28.00 and allows a low quad to charge a van
on their own if need be

I've mentioned this before, but I never heard if anyone else was experiencing
the same problem. I can sit in the sun for long times in hot weather and feel
fine. A few times I have gotten overheated, but at those times I felt hot and
overheated. And in Seattle at night I would use a blanket, a sheet, and a
heavy comforter. And all through the night I felt toasty warm.

But the last few years when I'm in bed daytime or night, but mostly nighttime.
Just using a sheet and one blanket. When my arms are covered. I can feel like
I am freezing cold, I can even be shivering. I can turn up the heat, I can add
a blanket, but I just feel colder. I often check my temperature and it is
about 97 or there about, my normal temperature is about 96.5. I am so sure
that I am cold, my arms feel like all the hair is standing up and my arms are
shaking. Then I realize what must be happening, that I'm overheated. So I
uncover my arms and at first, when the air gets my arms I feel even a bit
colder. But as my arms cool off they start to feel better, no longer hot or
cold. But then in the middle of the night they get cold again from being
uncovered. So it is damned if I do, damned if I don't.

My arms often feel cold and tingly, except when the sun is shining on them.
But only when under covers do they get to bad. When I sit under the furnace
vent and get warm I don't shivering like that. When I fall asleep with my arms
covered I wake up shivering, my arms are clenched tight, and I would bet
everything I have that I am cold. Obviously I would lose that bet.

I can't figure out how to stay warm night, without feeling like I'm freezing.

I think I read in one of your posts that the glider wheels were n the box the
bed came in, but there wasn't enough for the whole bed.  I say if they were in
the box and were installed on the bed and photographed for records then the
glider wheels should be on the bed, no matter what functions the bed has.
Hospital beds in the hospital all have wheels/casters of some type as well as
many functions.  I think they are blowing smoke up your backside because they
don't want to do it.

Anyway if it's paid off you don't have to let them in to remove the wheels.

I've recently had a strange allergic reaction that causes my lips and face to
swell. It happens about once per month, in the middle of the night and so far
we haven't been able to determine the cause.

Yesterday I saw a specialist (Allergist) and we're doing some tests to find the
cause. She wants me to have an epi-pen with me in case my air ways ever start
to swell shut. An epi-pen is for emergency injections of epinephron, and you
basically stab it into your thigh and it auto-injects medication. We worked
with two different 'dummy pens' that have no needle or medication just to teach
me how to use the pen if I ever needed it in an emergency. However, I was
unable to grasp either of the pens well enough to push down hard enough to
trigger the auto-inject mechanism. My doctor insists that I be able to do it
myself in case of emergency.

My question is: do any of know of an epi-pen that is more 'quad friendly?'

My doctor admitted she had never considered this situation, although it could
easily be an issue for anyone with limited hand function such as arthritis or
gout. So, my doctor is having reps from the companies that sell these pens come
in and meet with me/her so we can brainstorm on a solution.

I welcome any input from my quadlist friends.

Re: [QUAD-L] Remote Control Door Opener

2014-02-08 Thread Don Smith
There are remote door locks that have a battery in them, just check at your
local home improvement store.  If it's just to let people in like caregivers,
give them each a key.  If it's for friends, hide a key outside and let them
know where it's at, and have them put it back when they leave.  This is also
helpful incase of an emergency, just let 911 know where it's at.

any issues with my knees spreading like they do with my quickie.  I wonder if
the footrest was set low enough for you.  The only issue I have with the m300

I keep having problems with my Quantum 6000z and was told in may I will be able
to submit for a new power chair. I'm very happy about that!

I've got some questions for you guys about it... I'm thinking about getting a
permobil m300 which is a mid wheel chair.
The question I've got is about the head and foot rest systems. My chair right
now the feet are together which causes my knee's to open up which I hate. On my
current chair I've been using a gate belt around my thighs to bring my knees
closer together. I think this was due to my feet having to be together due to
the foot plate being one small piece of metal with ankle straps and not being
two plates that my feet can be separated.

My headrest never really has been comfortable because my head doesn't really
rest on it... It touches it if I recline a little though so I've reclined the
seat back and chair a little so my neck doesn't wear out and get sore so fast.
I need to make decisions on which headrest, foot rests, arm rests and seat I
want and was curious which you guys recommend?
Also what do you guys think of the permobil m300? Thanks in advance!

I found this about Silas Shellburne on the web.  It proves you can do anything
if you try.  if you do a yahoo search there's some pictures of him.  Prayers to
his family.

Silas Shellburnea southwestern Virginia beef and tobacco farmer, was having a
little fun
jumping on a trampoline with his three children during June 2002. The fun,
however, ended
abruptly when Mr. Shelburne fell off the trampoline and sustained a crush
injury to his C4/C5
vertebrae, leaving him with quadriplegia. This life changing injury left him
wondering how he
would continue to operate his more than 100 acre, three generation farm.
Through the use of a
wheelchair accessible workstation and a computer with an on-screen keyboard, he
is now able to
manage the accounting and management records. Modifications of the passenger
seat of a
Kawasaki Mule has given him access to many of his fields and pastures. With the
help of the
AgrAbility program and other Rural Rehabilitation Partners, Mr. Shelburne has
been able to
return to a productive role on the farm.

Hi everyone,
I will be traveling for the first time as a quad in the end of November, (after
8 years post injury). And to make it even more exciting, I'm going to Cabo San
Lucas. I know!!! Pretty brave huh? Well not really because I live in Mexico and
I'm used to the inaccessibility. Of course I already know my way around here
where I live. Cabo is pretty much new to me, even though I've been there before
but not in a power wheelchair. I have my concerns but I think I'll be able to
manage.
What I am wondering right now is about the flying situation. I know they have
those special isle wheelchairs and that the staff at the airport help you
transfer and all that. But what about my power chair? I know they put it with
the luggage, but do they need to disassemble it? I sent a message to the
airline but I know they take a while to reply and I'm a bit anxious.
Any other traveling tips would be very much appreciated.

2013-10-18 Thread Don Smith
I did have one of the best wound nurses from  a home health agency in the area
that would take care of my sore when it would get out of hand, but it's in a
spot that don't have much meat.  She took a job at a hospital wound clinic and
was consulting for the agency but they sent out a nurse (I'll call her Ms. know
it all) and after a personal call to the wound consultant, I got a bone scan
and spent 5 days in the hospital and 8 weeks of vankomyacin..  After the
hospital Ms. know it all was back and I went to the Kaiser outpatient clinic
once a month, they knew less then me.  After a few tries I got rid of Ms. Know
not much when she took two weeks vacation and her replacement who knew more
after one visit agreed to take over my case, things are progressing slowly but
in the right direction.  I sleep on a low airloss matterass and use a roho
cushion on my chair.

I speak from experience of having a bone infection on my bottom! I had this old
bag of bones nurse that thought she knew everything and went months before
getting a wound clinic appointment. Discovering that I had a bone infection, a
round IV antibiotics started to turn it around and then failed. So after
researching myself on my activity level and trying everything else surgery was
the next option. It's absolutely necessary to take those six weeks after
surgery not get up for any amount of time! What kind of mattress are you
sleeping on? I have an alternating air overlay on my bed and no issue with skin
integrity for many years now. I have spent the last five weeks in bed because
of a broken leg and hoping to get liberated next week during my doctors
appointment. Are you going to a wound clinic on a regular basis? What kind of
treatments have they tried? I would make sure you don't have a bone infection
first and getting a second opinion is another
perfect option also. I had a bone infection in my arm just below the elbow and
that was nearly a four-year battle before leaving town and finding doctors that
knew what they were talking about two hours from me. Anxiety I've had a few
different times but for the most part it's not been an issue. Any other
questions feel free to ask.

got me to thinking about Quad related questions in that light. So here are a

If a quad runs over somebody's foot and apologizes does it still hurt?

Is a quad drops something on the floor and it breaks, and you can't  reach the

I understand the policy change too. There were a lot of people abusing the
system.

My only additional comment is: there is not really 'equal treatment' at
Disneyland for wheelchair users. Equal treatment to me would mean the park were
fully accessible, including all the rides. If only half the rides and three
quarters of the park are wheelchair accessible, there is definitely no equal
treatment. Yes, I understand not everything or every place could [or should] be
accessible.

When I paid my $97 adult admission fee to get into Disneyland I felt it was
reasonable because even though I could only use some of the rides at least I
knew I would have quicker access to the limited rides I could get on. Perhaps
with this change they will consider a reduced ticket for wheelchair users? Not
likely as that would get abused too.

One last thing: being able to take my niece and nephew to the front of the line
made me feel kind of good in a way. For a change the wheelchair became an
advantage instead of an obstacle. I'm kind of sad that has been taken away.
But, I do understand.

Don.

OK, a new thing for me (at least in the last 23 years), I had to get
fingerprinted because of our Host Home license with the state. Now my thoughts
are: I've been licensed 36 years with the state, had been fingerprinted and
background checked numerous times before breaking my neck in 1990. Always
passed. Haven't been able to move my arms, use my hands etc etc etc since that
time.
Now they want a new background check and fingerprints. Let me see, I'm afraid
that they found out about my attempt to rob a store few years ago-told the
clerk that this was a stickup, I had a gun, it is in my lap, told him to pick
it up, point it at himself and hand over the money. Oh right, those were his
fingerprints not mine. I guess I am in the clear.
We get to the fingerprinting place, fill out paperwork, and then spend several
minutes trying to figure out how to do my fingerprints on a machine that's
attached the wall. We finally figure it all out, and she begins the slow
process of doing my right hand first, then the left hand, then back to the
right hand, and then back to the left hand as that is how the machine is set
up. Each time I have to backup the wheelchair, turn around, backup to the
machine, a total of four times.
Whew, got that accomplished and she looks at me and says are you enjoying
your little outing today? You certainly can drive your chair well I said no to
the first question and told her that she walks pretty well too. She sort of
laughs and has the last laugh on me.
She states I hope the state will accept these fingerprints as it looks like
you have burned them off and they usually require additional fingerprinting. I
guess only my thumbs have any ridges and whorls after being on my hand rests
for 23 years.
But now I am legal. Joan just shaking my head.

confined to a wheelchair
are journalistically incorrect.  Anybody that works in media in the U.S.
*should* abide by The Associated
Press Stylebook and Libel Manual, a book that is the bottom line on countless
phrases etc.  The AP manual
specifically states do not use 'wheelchair bound' or 'confined to a

wheelchair user.

Bottom line, anytime you see wheelchair bound in a news article, the writer and

Good call Don!  It isn't a matter of PC, the terms wheelchair bound and
confined to a wheelchair
are journalistically incorrect.  Anybody that works in media in the U.S.
*should* abide by The Associated
Press Stylebook and Libel Manual, a book that is the bottom line on countless
phrases etc.  The AP manual
specifically states do not use 'wheelchair bound' or 'confined to a
wheelchair'. The correct term is
wheelchair user.

Bottom line, anytime you see wheelchair bound in a news article, the writer and
editer didn't properly proof read,
just as bad a spelling errors like have a glass of shampain.

On the subject of Hoyer lifts...

Got my first one about a week ago.  I know the sling I got with it isn't going
to work because I'd have to sit on it while in my chair.  Before buying a sling
that I think will work I decided to give it a try.  When I'm in the sling, I
can't turn facing the hydraulic cylinder (with my chair behind me) without my
knees and feet hitting the cylinder.  I have pretty long legs.  I'm wondering
if they come with a longer top arm?  Does anybody else have this problem?

I'm just curios if there's ever been any research done on stem cell use to
treat pressure sores?  I would volunteer my right butt cheek if the
treatment/trial was free and not hazardus.

I'm having stem cells harvested from my bone marrow after chemo treatment,
frozen getting my own cells back so I won't need a donor. I know this is much
different than what you all are discussing but it does shine light on stem cell
research for us one day.

do to deal with a spinal cord injury in a positive way is a good thing. What
I will say is probally the best advice any newly injured person can get. When
you get injured and are in a rehab setting for usually at least three months
you have a window of opportunity to figure out vital things needed to be a
success at living with sci. Learning to tranfer, catherize, feed oneself are
a few as well as how you are going to build a ramp at your existing home or
you may need to move somewhere else that can be modified. soak up all this
information, work hard, write notes on people that can help you down the
road. Once your out of the hospital the two things that will make or break
you in my opinion are getting involved in a college and either getting a
vehicle modified for driving or transport,
depending on function level. These two things alone along with what you
learned in rehab and family support will determine how successful your new
life is going to be. This is the new you and that isnt necessarily a good or
bad thing it just is. Its a chance to start over in any case and build new.
This window of opportunity slowly closes and you are left with what you
learned, wrote, adapted and so on. If you waste the first few years worrying
about  things like stem cells I believe you will be sorry.  If I were involved
with these sci magazines, I would write a three page special on what to do
after you have a spinal cord injury. Im so angry at times at what people told
me to do when I was first injured that was foolish and Im paying the price
now.I hope someone can take something I said and make it useful to a newly
injured, scared person. Sci is not the end, its just the beginning of a
journey.

They tried Manueka or  medi honey for my wound and after two days just after
the dressing change I had an allergic reaction to it.  I broke out in wilts and
itching, my caregiver called 911 and I went to emergency by ambulance.  Ive
never had problems with bees or honey before.  The plant the honey comes from
is native to New Zealand and Australasia.

have money for a very expensive repair which might be cheaper to fix now.

p.s. is she blond by the way, this could explain things.

Hi All,
Friday Daen goes out to Pep Boys to get her breaks fixed. The motor in
the van still continues to seize-up and just die while she's driving. Saturday
afternoon she goes to a family party, after that she goes to the ER because her
stomach is bothering her. Saturday night, mid-night, she goes to midnight BINGO
gets home at 2:30 wakes Pete up to close her lift and tells him I still don't
feel good, I'm going inside to call the visiting nurse. Today she goes out to
a family party.
All this time, her family is no where in sight. Not for all the 15 years
