RE: [QUAD-L] Chair Shop
All I can think of is that you might want to try a good electronics person to check your chairs. I use a 08 tdx and just went at least 6 miles and didn't use a 50% charge on 4 year old interstate maintenance free marine batteries. I got them and a polycarbonate divider that I was told should always be used when batteries are settled together. I haven't had a box with both batteries together since the late 80s. Everest & Jennings used to nestle batteries beside each other like this chair and they needed dividers that didn't come with the chair. I don't know if this will help anyone but it's an idea. I know that it's out of pocket , but electronic repair shops and many auto mechanics have been more help to me than DME's. Much faster too.Best Wishes , John s . RE: [QUAD-L] Barreries
The safety issue with the gell batteries is with flying . If acid batteries come in contact with salt water they give off poisonous gas. Since AGM, advanced glass mat,, batteries don't vent, I don't see how they'd be a problem. The law was written before AGM batteries became available.I really think that you have described a dead cell. It's not common but it does happen . I've used my charger on lead acid, (( check with distilled water ), and gell, and maintenance free and it's still doing the job. I have had to replace the charger, though . to charge your batteries you must have 24 volts and about 20 amps. Most chargers begin at 30 some amps then drop to 15 and then finally 3 or 2 before they stop charging. Always at 26 to 24 volts. most electric multimeters can test them. the pi symbol is what I've never seen. It must mean something . maybe 1 battery has a dead cell? Best wishes , John s . RE: Fwd: [QUAD-L] Wound FYI
Bryce, I take a drink after meals. Most of my protein is from food, but 140 must have been a mistype. I meant 100 grams per day. My bad. The problems with wounds is that they drain protein from your system so fast that it is important to replenish your that protein loss but as Lori said, don't overwhelm your system. Exess protein exits your system via your kidneys and can be harmful if not taken with lots of fluids and spread out over the course of a day. Some of the protein drinks can't be digested and will simply be excreted through the urinary tract. For many quads, it's important to discuss it with doctors and dieticians. After all, we want to be healthy, not cause more problems. Best Wishes, John s. I have never had a Roho cushion as I have always used a rotating air mattress. but I posted a couple of weeks ago or a little bit longer what is going on with me as a result of a careless nurse ruining my urethra. By stretching it. This leads to urine draining around the catheter, which I have never had in my life, which gives a Domino effect of skin breakdown -- most of which was causing my old battle wounds that I had between 2009 and 2012, whereby that very fragile skin will never get back to as strong as it was. To add insult to injury, and for the first time in my life a wound opened deep in the crease of my groin and for my safety [so any wrong movement or urinary bacteria by getting up in my chair] I have been staying in bed. It has been a little over 3 weeks now. They are both now closed but fragile, so I will wait a few more days to give it a chance to seal a little longer for lack of better words. I DID get up on Tuesday of this week to go see my urologist about the strategy of what to do about this urinary leaking and I was going over very smooth roads and did not go over any extraordinary bumps or anything. And it is only 10 minutes away. But in that time I got an abrasion over my right is she'll tuberousity, which is caused by shearing. My Roho Cushion has served me well for shearing and that is why I started using one beginning in 2010/2011 timeframe. So I could get up after my old battle wounds were mostly closed and then closed. What I have noticed a great correlation to happen is between all the stress I have been through over the last six months (because of what happened to me around February 1, of having my urethra stretched terribly, but of which I did not report at the time, because I did not think it would hurt long-term. And there was really no way I could "prove" that one particular nurse did it under the circumstances). Being without any family is what hurts the most and none of this would have happened had my sister and brother-in-law been able to keep me living with them and they very well could have because they took me in for 3 1/2 years after my husband's passing for what I thought would be much longer than that . And they had nowhere for me to go because there was no accessible houses or apartments in their town or around it. They did not even think twice about the consideration of putting me in a nursing home I have always been an active person and I was getting great care by hiring morning and evening caregivers 7 days a week and I had a great home health agency providing me with all nursing needs and 3 morning home health aide visits, which Medicare Certified Home Health Agencies started to cut way back on, starting

Contour seats have to be designed to fit you. If it's meant to fit everyone it will just cause you more problems. I personally need a seat that reclines and can tilt in space. I do know it's possible to get Contour seats that can do this. Car seats are made to recline an automotive manufacturers have been studying the way people sit for a long time much longer then wheelchair manufacturers. I'm absolutely certain that Contour seats can be made to fit into wheelchairs without risking sores. I get a little upset when I get into a car seat that is more comfortable then my wheelchair and reclines electrically yet nothing like it is available in a wheelchair. Let's face it a Roho seat maybe the height of comfort in wheelchairs but it looks like crap. I think it's about time some wheelchairs had a little bit more Style. Re: [QUAD-L] New wound
Here's what I know about treating small wounds. Start by treating with Dakin's solution, you can make it yourself. It consists of 21 parts sterile water one part Clorox bleach and a pinch of baking soda. This is much cheaper than buying it and it is the actual solution. Since you already have aQUACEL, be sure that they just lay it in the world and not pack the wound. It should be very fluffy and not tightly packed. Over packing wounds delays healing and often causes more damage. Cover the wound and try to stay off it as much as possible. True Dakin's solution is 7 parts water to one part bleach with a pinch of baking soda. This is often too strong to be used at home. Medicaid won't cover it because it is easy to make.Best Wishes, John s. RE: [QUAD-L] Para Race Driver
With the advances in transmission technology many cars can use automatic transmissions with thumb shifting on the steering wheel. Braking and throttle is a single stick with a finger trigger to keep rpms up if they use a turbocharged engine. Actually. A second trigger to operate the clutch would be simple but I don't think a standard tranny would offer any real advantage. The racing transmissions I used to work with always had a crash synchronization system so the driver only used the clutch to stop and go. Shifting is done when the idiot light signals to let off the gas and depress the thumb lever on the top, or right. Downshifting is the reverse. Rev the motor and press the left or lower thumb lever. Long ago, the space and safety of the floor shift was tossed out. In 1969 Richard Petty dominated NASCAR in a charger that had a simple automatic column shifter. Best Wishes, John s. Re: Fwd: [QUAD-L] Old sci
I know that many quads only break their necks and become quads, but some of us break a lot of things. I was hurt and had a severe head injury, a broken neck, back, several ribs, left arm and leg, spleen, fingers and nose. Arthritis became an issue after about 28 years post. I have to use a back brace because I have disc disintegrating disease or DDD. I get AD from just being positioned wrong. I am not looking for sympathy. I'm sick of that. I do know that other quads have similar problems and are fighting unseen pain with little help because they have lived so long. I've never met two quads exactly alike. The one thing that we do have in common is a desire to be treated with the same respect that so many people take for granted. I don't want pity, just a low air loss mattress that was promised to me last year. You can't spend pity.Best wishes, John s. I will be 33 years post injury on August 15th--C5-6 complete quad due to diving accident. At this time I would love nothing more than to someday be the oldest living quad. I suppose I can say that because I don't have the debilitating pain or issues many on this list speak of. I'm not saying this to undermine their struggles--I know I'm very lucky. I get up every day looking forward to the adventure ahead. I am thankful for every moment I have and I try to radiate that positive vibe to every person I meet. I don't always succeed, and I have bad days just like everybody else. Still, my greatest fear is dying too soon, not dying too old. As others have said here: they were fine living as quads for years and then things just fell apart. I know that is a possibility for me, too. That realization adds even greater urgency to every day--I want to experience everything I possibly can while I'm healthy. So, for any new quads on this list, let me be testimony that life as a quad can be full, happy, active and rewarding, even after 33 years. I only speak for myself, but I know I'm not alone. Re: [QUAD-L] Autonomic Dysreflexia and pain
I think that the first thing everyone needs to know about most pain drugs is that you must continually break the forming addiction. Staying on one drug will cause it to lose its effectiveness.at that point you are taking the drug and its not doing anything but feeding an addiction. No one in pain wants to hear this but the fact is you must find another drug or device while you detox. The drug needs to come from another family of drugs. Altering your medications and using milder drugs whatever the pain isn't quite as bad can help extend the use of Norco or vicodin. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally sympathetic I've been on the trip myself. john s Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone Original message From: jume9...@comcast.net Date:11/24/2014 3:40 PM (GMT-05:00) To: quad-list quad-list@eskimo.com Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Autonomic Dysreflexia and pain I have the same thing with pinched nerves from my disc. Re: [QUAD-L] Reclining?
I don't think a guage would work very well since when no one is in the chair there is no pressure in the seat, only volume. Once you sit on the roho your bottom should be about an inch from the roho surface. I have a doubled up egg crate under my roho. You want to measure at the bony part of the butt. Roho had a thin board that went under your cushion, that had a alarm that went off if it had too much pressure on it. If your cushion went flat. But from what I heard they stopped making it cause it did not work well. I had one, but I would let air out until I bottomed out, but it would not go off. I could not trust it so I gave it back. Greg Thanks for explaining that, Greg. That was the point I was trying to make by suggesting a pressure mapping. For me, even a small change in my Roho can cause a sore and if it's not corrected, the sore/shear just won't heal. I wish someone who is creative could design a pressure gauge for Rohos. The story reads like a book. In the 80's I Had an aid that killed a guy doing a drug deal. I wasn't surprised. He had been working twenty hour days for a week without gripping about his time. When I saw him on TV all I could think of was the reward money I missed out on. Nowadays, I use the fin test on new aids. I leave a five on the floor and see if it disappears or gets given back. If they pass we try bigger and more discreet tests. It's important to trust aids even more so than family. LOUIS COUNTY • A caregiver of a quadriplegic man from south St. Louis County was found guilty of first degree murder and first degree arson after a trial this week . Tyrone Benedict, 41, of Maryland Heights, is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 5, said defense attorney Gil Sison. The jury deliberated about two and a half hours on Friday and recommended a sentence of life without the possibility of parole for the murder charge and life for the arson charge. The incident happened on Feb. 23, 2001. Firefighters who arrived at the burning apartment found Mark J. Woods, 40, in bed with multiple stab wounds, including one through his neck. Woods, who had been paralyzed from the chest down and relied on machines and caregivers for most of his daily tasks, had hired Benedict as a caregiver about a month earlier. Prosecutors noted that Benedict's story to police changed, and he at first denied he had gone into work that day but cell phone records placed him near the duplex in the 100 block of Kinswood Lane. During the trial, Woods' mother said that he did not have problems with previous caregivers but did with Benedict. She said she’d hear them arguing over money and once heard Benedict say to Woods, “You will be sorry.” Valerie Schremp Hahn covers nightside public safety for the Post-Dispatch.
