2016-12-02 Thread alcibiates2
All I can think of is that you might want to try a good electronics person to
check your chairs. I use a 08 tdx and just went at least 6 miles and didn't use
a 50% charge on 4 year old interstate maintenance free marine batteries. I got
them and a polycarbonate divider that I was told should always be used when
batteries are settled together. I haven't had a box with both batteries
together since the late 80s. Everest & Jennings used to nestle batteries beside
each other like this chair and they needed dividers that didn't  come with the
chair. I don't know if this will help anyone but it's an idea. I know that it's
out of pocket ,  but electronic repair shops and many auto mechanics have been
more help to me than DME's. Much faster too.Best Wishes , John s .

The  safety issue with the gell batteries is with flying . If acid batteries
come in contact with salt water they give off poisonous gas. Since AGM,
advanced glass  mat,, batteries  don't vent, I don't see how they'd be a
problem. The law was written before  AGM batteries became available.I really
think that you have described a dead cell. It's not common  but it does happen
. I think when you get them tested one battery will read 8 volts or something
under 12. I do wish you the best of luck with it.

I've used my charger on lead acid, (( check with distilled water ), and gell,
and maintenance free and it's still doing the job. I have had to replace the
charger, though .  to charge your batteries  you must have 24 volts and about
20 amps. Most chargers begin at 30 some amps then drop to 15 and then finally 3
or 2 before  they stop charging. Always at 26 to 24 volts. most electric
multimeters can test them. the pi symbol  is what I've  never seen. It must
mean something .  maybe 1 battery has a dead cell?

I seem to do it a lot. I drink a lot of hot drinks and set the cup on a small

keep my hand through the cup's handel, but sometimes I set my hand on the top
of the cup so it' does not spill when driving my chair. I burn myself 3 way,
spill, puttig my hand/fingure over the steam hole, and now and then I use a new
insolated cup and find out the cup gets too hot and I burned my hand through
the cup.
Last night a cup got too hot. Back of my fingers and tummy got a few blisters.
When I lived in Seattle we had a wood stove, I often pushed the damper in if it
was too hot, I often burned my hand by barely touching the tove.
Worst one was spilling a whole cup of hot apple cider on my lap. Huge blisters.

Bryce,  I take a drink after meals. Most of my protein is from food, but 140
must have been a mistype. I meant 100 grams per day. My bad. The problems with
wounds is that they drain protein from your system so fast that it is important
to replenish your that protein loss but as Lori said, don't overwhelm your
system. Exess protein exits your system via your kidneys and can be harmful if
not taken with lots of fluids and spread out over the course of a day. Some of
the protein drinks can't be digested and will simply be excreted through the
urinary tract. For many quads, it's important to discuss it with doctors and
dieticians. After all, we want to be healthy, not cause more problems. Best

saved my boney feet and ankles from many sores over the years.
In healing sores,  I've found that a high protein diet is essential. A sore
will drain protein from your system like nothing else.
Don't turn your nose up to those nasty drinks. Just give in and choke it down.
At least 140 grams per day.

Hey William,

I am sorry to hear about your ongoing problems, but this type of thing seems to
be running rampant this past year, with many of us on this list no matter how
hard we try for the breakdowns not to happen!

I have never had a Roho cushion as I have always used a rotating air mattress.
but I posted a couple of weeks ago or a little bit longer what is going on with
me as a result of a careless nurse ruining my urethra.
By stretching it. This leads to urine draining around the catheter, which I
have never had in my life, which gives a Domino effect of skin breakdown --
most of which was causing my old battle wounds that I had between 2009 and
2012, whereby that very fragile
skin will never get back to as strong as it was.

To add insult to injury, and for the first time in my life a wound opened deep
in the crease of my groin and for my safety [so any wrong movement or urinary
bacteria by getting up in my chair] I have been staying
in bed. It has been a little over 3 weeks now. They are both now closed but
fragile, so I will wait a few more days to give it a chance to seal a little
longer for lack of better words.

I DID get up on Tuesday of this week to go see my urologist about the strategy
of what to do about this urinary leaking and I was going over very smooth roads
and did not go over any extraordinary bumps or
anything. And it is only 10 minutes away. But in that time I got an abrasion
over my right is she'll tuberousity, which is caused by shearing. My Roho
Cushion has served me well for shearing and that is why I started using one
beginning in 2010/2011 timeframe.
So I could get up after my old battle wounds were mostly closed and then
closed.

What I have noticed a great correlation to happen is between all the stress I
have been through over the last six months (because of what happened to me

Contour seats have to be designed to fit you. If it's meant to fit everyone it
will just cause you more problems. I personally need a seat that reclines and
can tilt in space. I do know it's possible to get Contour seats that can do
this. Car seats are made to recline an automotive manufacturers have been
studying the way people sit for a long time much longer then wheelchair
manufacturers. I'm absolutely certain that Contour seats can be made to fit
into wheelchairs without risking sores.
I get a little upset when I get into a car seat that is more comfortable then
my wheelchair and reclines electrically yet nothing like it is available in a
wheelchair. Let's face it a Roho seat maybe the height of comfort in
wheelchairs but it looks like crap. I think it's about time some wheelchairs
had a little bit more Style.

I have always gone back to Roho after trying a new cushion. I'm sure there will

different shape and size. If it curves where you don't, could cause an issue.
though if it fits good, might as well try it.

forks spoons papers books and food.
It comes in a kit form and a brace maker must hit it to each individual person.
The hard thing about it is finding a brace maker that will do it. Or should I

Re: [QUAD-L] New wound

2016-01-08 Thread alcibiates2
Here's what I know about treating small wounds. Start by treating with Dakin's
solution, you can make it yourself. It consists of 21 parts sterile water one
part Clorox bleach and a pinch of baking soda. This is much cheaper than buying
it and it is the actual solution. Since you already have aQUACEL, be sure that
they just lay it in the world and not pack the wound. It should be very fluffy
and not tightly packed. Over packing wounds delays healing and often causes
more damage. Cover the wound and try to stay off it as much as possible.
True Dakin's solution is 7 parts water to one part bleach with a pinch of
baking soda. This is often too strong to be used at home. Medicaid won't cover
it because it is easy to make.Best Wishes, John s.

won't completely heal. I have discussed the possibility of surgery, i.e. skin
flap, to repair the affected area, but he thinks any risk of the surgery not
healing properly outweighs just living with the problem I have now.

RE: [QUAD-L] Para Race Driver

2016-01-08 Thread alcibiates2
With the advances in transmission technology many cars can use automatic
transmissions with thumb shifting on the steering wheel. Braking and throttle
is a single stick with a finger trigger to keep rpms up if they use a
turbocharged engine. Actually. A second trigger to operate the clutch would be
simple but I don't think a standard tranny would offer any real advantage. The
racing transmissions I used to work with always had a crash synchronization
system so the driver only used the clutch to stop and go. Shifting is done when
the idiot light signals to let off the gas and depress the thumb lever on the
top, or right. Downshifting is the reverse. Rev the motor and press the left or
lower thumb lever. Long ago, the space and safety of the floor shift was tossed
out. In 1969 Richard Petty dominated NASCAR in a charger that had a simple
automatic column shifter. Best Wishes, John s.

Mines not real big, but can get uncomfortable. It often feels like it's

break a lot of things. I was hurt and had a severe head injury, a broken neck,
back, several ribs, left arm and leg, spleen, fingers and nose. Arthritis
became an issue after about 28 years post. I have to use a back brace because I
have disc disintegrating disease or DDD. I get AD from just being positioned
wrong.  I am not looking for sympathy.  I'm sick of that. I do know that other
quads have similar problems and are fighting unseen pain with little help
because they have lived so long. I've never met two quads exactly alike. The
one thing that we do have in common is a desire to be treated with the same
respect that so many people take for granted. I don't want pity, just a low air

I'm writing this for any new quads on the list because I see things differently
than most of those who have responded to this post.
I will be 33 years post injury on August 15th--C5-6 complete quad due to diving
accident. At this time I would love nothing more than to someday be the oldest
living quad. I suppose I can say that because I don't have the debilitating
pain or issues many on this list speak of. I'm not saying this to undermine
their struggles--I know I'm very lucky.
I get up every day looking forward to the adventure ahead. I am thankful for
every moment I have and I try to radiate that positive vibe to every person I
meet. I don't always succeed, and I have bad days just like everybody else.
Still, my greatest fear is dying too soon, not dying too old.
As others have said here: they were fine living as quads for years and then
things just fell apart. I know that is a possibility for me, too. That
realization adds even greater urgency to every day--I want to experience
everything I possibly can while I'm healthy.
So, for any new quads on this list, let me be testimony that life as a quad can
be full, happy, active and rewarding, even after 33 years. I only speak for
myself, but I know I'm not alone.
I wish you all health and happiness,

got nauseated on the way home so I ate some soup and took a phenagran. I went
to bed at 4 and it was a rough evening and  night. I was sick to my stomach and
sweated my rear off all night. I really wanted to die and should’ve called 911
to go back to the hospital. Should’ve stayed an extra day.  I rested all day
Wednesday but was up in my chair all day Thursday and Friday. Still taking pain
meds but went 9 hours yesterday in between doses.

The surgeon said not to do bowel program for at least a week………I feel like a
fat cow. Taking Miralax and praying I’ll go when I’m on my shower chair.

On a lighter note and something only quads can appreciate……I’ve passed gas
w/out bending over or pushing on my rear……it was a joyful noise…….lol
I guess there’s no roadblocks anymore J now if I can just go to the bathroom!

Survey About Pain After Spinal Cord Injury

Researchers at the Miami Project are conducting a web-based survey regarding
day-to-day experiences of people living with spinal cord injury (SCI) and
chronic pain. In most cases pain remains a major problem, despite our best
treatments. The purpose of this study is to learn from the perspectives of
people who are living with this pain.  The information regarding the personal
experiences of living with SCI and chronic pain is needed to improve the
understanding and management of this difficult condition, and will benefit the
general SCI community including Veterans, their families, and caregivers.
Everyone with persistent pain after a spinal cord injury has a unique
experience. We would like to hear about yours!

Access the survey here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/SCIpain

Survey About Independence in Daily Living and Quality of Life After Spinal Cord
Injury

The enclosed link below contains a survey that seeks your opinion/perspectives
on which functions you (would) value most highly to improve your own
independence in daily living and quality of life.  It does so by asking you to
complete a series of scenarios and questionnaires, ranking the relative
importance in restoring different sorts of function (arm movement/hand
grasping, walking, bladder and bowel control, sexual function) and/or treating
the very common problem of neuropathic (nerve-related) pain against each other.
This research forms part of a PhD study in which we hope to be able to compare
views of people with SCI in the United States with Australia, extending
previous work done in US.

Access the survey here:

Best wishes and Happy Holidays!

If you're having lactose intolerance you can try multiple things to ameliorate
the situation. Lactase, avoiding dairy, using substitutes. Me I have more of a
dairy allergy most of the time.

Sounds like you might have some food allergies. Remember that allergies CAN
develop over time, so just because you've never been lactose intolerant doesn't
mean that hasn't changed. The one you hear about now is gluten sensitivity, but
there are many foods that could be causing you to have reactions. Excessive gas
in the stomach or intestines could easily cause A.D., as well as inflame your
digestive tract. It might be worth seeing and allergist, or at least trying a
change in diet to see what happens. For example, no dairy products for two
weeks. Other common allergens include: eggs, nuts, shellfish, soy and wheat
products. Carbonated beverages can cause gas too.

Good luck. I hope you guys can figure it out!

I think that the first thing everyone needs to know about most pain drugs is
that you must continually break the forming addiction.  Staying on one drug
will cause it to lose its effectiveness.at that point you are taking the drug
and its not doing anything but feeding an addiction. No one in pain wants to
hear this but the fact is you must find another drug or device while you detox.
The drug needs to come from another family of drugs.  Altering your

I can't think of many reasons our quadriplegia would contribute to scalp itch,
except:
1. we wear hats more?
2. we lay in bed more and move less?
3. we shower or wash our hair less?

Further investigation needs to be conducted.  :)

It's not perfect, but it did help a lot. I have to lay a towel over my lap
because so much dry skin falls off while I'm scraping my scalp. It's like it's

I also have to wash my hair at least twice a week or it gets bad. I try and go

I do, and I have been using Cannabis as a medicine for nearly 13 years,
successfully too! If you're in a medical Cannabis state, get in touch with a
recommending Physician. You don't have to smoke anything, use tincture
(concentrated liquid extracts) or vaporization. I use very high CBD and CBN
types, both have very low amounts of THC!

Hello again friends! LittleQuad is here!
I had been having swollen feet for a while. I noticed that when I lay all the
way back in my chair during the day and have my feet elevated above my head
they would slowly drain. About 3 weeks ago when I got into bed and  they were
still very swollen. So I asked my mom if she minded letting me lay on my back
and propping my feet up on several pillows, each leg on separate stack. I lay
there about 2 hours. It makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE! We cath about 500 to 600.
Then about 10pm I get on my side.
Just wanted to let everyone know what I discovered!!!

I don't think a guage would work very well since when no one is in the chair
there is no pressure in the seat, only volume. Once you sit on the roho your
bottom should be about an inch from the roho surface. I have a doubled up egg
crate under my roho.
You want to measure at the bony part of the butt. Aids love doing this. Yeah,
well. A mag light can be handy for this job.
I think they would have included a psi Guage if it would help.

very, considerate and considers others feelings most of the time. cool
personality. she came home monday crying because her best friend (a diabetic)
had to go to the hospital. i asked if she was okay and yes she was but isabella
was pissed because the friend wasn't compliant with her medicine. i know i'm
way off topic and rambling but my point is, she gives me reason to live. a
feeling that someone needs me to talk to and often tells me things swearing me
to secrecy.  she does however remind me that i'm stuck in this chair. we listen
to music on you tube, she dances i wish soo much i could dance, ride bikes,

I feel the same way about Roho cushions. It dose NOT cost $300,

rubber doesn't cost THAT much.  Bobbie

he said it cost like $10,000. It can't be that costly to make.
Roho had a thin board that went under your cushion, that had a
alarm that went off if it had too much pressure on it. If your
 cushion went flat.
But from what I heard they stopped making it cause it did not
work well. I had one, but I would let air out until I bottomed
out, but it would not go off. I could not trust it so I gave it
 back. Greg

Thanks for explaining that, Greg.  That was the point I was
trying to make by suggesting a pressure mapping.  For me, even
a small change in my Roho can cause a sore and if it's not
corrected, the sore/shear just won't heal.  I wish someone who
is creative could design a pressure gauge for Rohos.  That way
you could know your number and could monitor the cushion to
 maintain your optimal pressure.

I really wanted the Roho that has the foam sides that keep your

make changes to your chair's back or legrests and it changes

Good to make those changes then get mapped. After I added

When I saw him on TV all I could think of was the reward money I missed out on.
Nowadays, I use the fin test on new aids. I leave a five on the floor and see

It's important to trust aids even more so than family. Don't think sex makes a

ST. LOUIS COUNTY • A caregiver of a quadriplegic man from south St. Louis
County was found guilty of first degree murder and first degree arson after a
trial this week .
Tyrone Benedict, 41, of Maryland Heights, is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 5,
said defense attorney Gil Sison. The jury deliberated about two and a half
hours on Friday and recommended a sentence of life without the possibility of
parole for the murder charge and life for the arson charge.
The incident happened on Feb. 23, 2001. Firefighters who arrived at the burning
apartment found Mark J. Woods, 40, in bed with multiple stab wounds, including
one through his neck. Woods, who had been paralyzed from the chest down and
relied on machines and caregivers for most of his daily tasks, had hired
Benedict as a caregiver about a month earlier.
Prosecutors noted that Benedict's story to police changed, and he at first
denied he had gone into work that day but cell phone records placed him near
the duplex in the 100 block of Kinswood Lane.
During the trial, Woods' mother said that he did not have problems with
previous caregivers but did with Benedict. She said she’d hear them arguing
over money and once heard Benedict say to Woods, “You will be sorry.”

When monkey shines came out friends in Hollywood warned it would paint a
terrible picture of quadriplegia. A group of us out ADAPT, the disability civil

that was carried by national media and triggered similar protests in other
cities. we weren't protesting the horror premise – – the genre is outlandish by
definition. We were protesting the entire back story regarding the
disabilities, that we live in nightmare existence, isolated, despised, deformed
by self-loathing and hate for everybody else. This judgment went completely
un-critiqued by the narrative and, I'm sad to say, the audience. One
able-bodied civil rights activist polled people as they left showings of the
movie. 80 something percent said quadriplegic was a life not worth living. That
is the fuel for discrimination, prejudice and all the way up to euthanasia. I

Rehab was awesome after the year and a half in a nursing home. I got a lesson
in marriage when I left rehab and started college. I spent more time moving
than anything else. I think that's what I remember most.
Funny part is I can't remember who got away with my old clothes and cars. The
hospitals found all my money.  No curiosity in that. I think I tried to look on
the bright side of things more than I do today.  Back then folks were surprised
I was alive. Today, everyone is a lot more ambivalent. Including me.

The rehab is mostly good memories of promise, hope along with hard work and
tears. Coming home was a lot of fear and discontent. My parents were into a lot
of disagreement so I spent my days on the streets rolling around with my
Walkman looking for friends. This method actually got me a lot of services at
the time because I was noticed. My parents divorced soon after as well. I tried
moving in with my mother and all she did was cry and read the bible. I called
my dad to ask to come home and he told me a famous line boy if you come back
all I can offer you is a little food, water and heat and Im leaving at 2pm for
work. The short end to a long story is I came back.

The smells of MANY different things is what I remember most, instead of
antiseptic cleaning Solutions. Next thing was the narrow doorways, unlike those
in hospitals and rehab. Next was the phone. When I was injured in 1973 we still
had rotary phones, I learned in rehab how to dial a rotary phone. Bobbie

I can't promise you anything but sometimes edema is a side effect of certain

stay very swelled up, my family doc. had me try Lasik A water pill I think plus
had me try wearing compression hose stockings, but that did not help a whole

are not sure if is even treatable? Anyway's thanks for any information from any

Tell me your opinions. your watching the World Series and a person keeps
changing the channel to a preacher or that crazy news channel that repeats the
stories over and over. You finally say something and are met with an argument.
I felt like this person thought they had power over me because im in a chair. I
asked them ' do you think a walking guy would put up with you changing the
channel to a preacher?, I feel like you are stepping on my manhood.

Am I wrong here?

[QUAD-L] High bp

When my bp sky rockets it is because of full bowel or bladder or pain.
Recently, pain is the big problem. Feeling hot or sweating is my tip off. I
take ten mgs. of Norco every 4 hours. Oxy when it's not enough.
Be careful.  This can kill if not taken care of.

Isn't there any way we can remove this Hosni guy from the list? He never (or
rarely) contributes anything quad related, but we always get his blog posts,
most of which are political, some are offensive.

I'm not into censorship, and I think it's great that he expresses his opinions

If I'm the only one who is upset by these blog postings on quad-list I'll shut
up and accept my title of grumpy old quad.

Thanks,

[QUAD-L] Stem cell therapy

2014-10-22 Thread alcibiates2

I think that former pres. Bush and a handy group of religious zealots set back
stem cell research at least ten years. Let's face it, by the time this research
is available to the average person, the average person will have to take most
insurance companies to court because medicare sure as heck will refuse to fund
such risky treatments, assuming medicare even exists to say it's a valid
treatment.
To be kind, medicine will soon be a rich man's entitlement. Like courts and
justice, politics and so many other things we were taught were American.
38 yrs. Post.  I hate to sound jaded but I honestly don't think stem cell for
quads will be standard treatment for the everyday person for another thirty
five years minimum. Of course the rich will have it as fast as they can wire
the money into a numbered account now.
