Re: [RBW] Why doesn't Riv reissue some bag classics?

2010-11-08 Thread Fai Mao
I agree with Patrick. I've thought that Riv bags were very expensive. Far
more so than I was willing to pay in most cases. I don't like having a bike
that looks attractive to thieves and a really expensive looking bag just
screams "Steal me" Plus, I commute on a bicycle and would rather that my
bike be cheaper than an automobile to maintain. Granted, I haven't driven a
car since 1996 so the cost of auto-maintenance may have gone up.

Phil hubs are worth it if you have the cash for them. They never wear out

A less expensive option would be something like a DT-Swiss 370

there are significant changes from the Quickbeam but I am not sure.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Question - main bike, or backup bike?

2010-11-08 Thread swenindy
Nice to hear all the QB love. I got a first year green one five
(six?) years ago on ebay for a deal and I can't say exactly but it it
has to have over 10,000 miles on it from me and it was already well
ridden by the previous owner. I've built three vintage touring bikes
and a couple of other bikes in the last few years and they all sit un-
ridden until I strip them down and sell off the parts and frames. Now
I only have the QB and a late-80s mountain bike with albatross bars
and big baskets front and rear for my short daily commute (one mile,
bummer) and grocery runs. I can't explain it but no other bike
"feels" like the QB. Fast, stable, amazing. I rode it 3k this summer
alone (estimated because I don't have a computer or racks, just a old
big baggins saddle bag for when I need to transport a couple of
bombers of home brew to a friend's house). I'm saving for a
Hunqua...but it could be a while.

pics some time.

and to the OP: what is the stem/bar set up? I run a short nitto stem
and the wide noodle bars but I'm thinking of going higher and that
looks sweet.

[RBW] Re: AHH on order

2010-11-08 Thread E.B.
"Phil hubs - are they worth it?"

Well, they're not for everyone.

Shimano makes a nice hub, and a set of XT hubs can be had for well
under the cost of a Phil front hub. An overhaul requires only a few
dollars in bearings and grease. Since they're designed with the off-
road rider in mind, they feature better seals than Shimano road hubs,
and I believe current XT freehubs have 10-degree engagement (a
gratuitous selling point for the non-offroader, perhaps). Shimano
also has a solid reputation for offering very good quality for
reasonable prices.

But, those XT bearing seals won't stop everything. When water is able
to deliver contaminants to the hub bearings, an overhaul is
necessary. Even when you don't ride in harsh conditions, Shimano hubs
need regular cleaning and regreasing. Either you need to pay a local
mechanic to do this for you, or you need to take on the task. It's
not terribly difficult, but it's more involved than some people want
to get, and you've got to get the adjustment right to avoid damaging
the hubs.

Phil hubs are quite different, and the difference is more than the
finish. Cartridge bearings aren't intended to be serviced, though
you'll sometimes hear of folks pulling the seals away to add grease to
the bearings. Don't know how well that works out. You run the
bearings until they need replacement with new cartridges, available
from Phil, your LBS or a bearing supply house. I haven't replaced my
bearings yet, but the process is well described by Phil for user
serviceability. The axles are robust, to say the least. Phil is
known for superb customer service and standing behind their product.
With bearing replacement and the less frequent freehub replacement,
you could ride these to the end of your riding days.

But the biggest reason I think a Phil hub would be worth your
consideration is the option of building a 40-spoke rear wheel. At 250-
lbs with the intention of some unpaved riding, this would be
reassuring. I don't see 40-hole hubs or rims offered on RBW's site,
but they could possibly get them for a build for you. Talk to Rich,
Peter White and others to get their impressions. If they convince you
a strong 36-spoke wheel can handle your needs, then you have various
options for hubs. But if a 40-spoke is preferable, then you're
probably only looking at Phil or White Industries as options.

I've wondered about this for a while, and it's been percolating around
my brain for a couple of days in earnest. Why do you think Rivendell
changes model names and house brands the way they do?

The "Quickbeam" is now the "SimpleOne," but it appears to be the same
design.
The Bombadil changed from a double top tube to a diaga-tube and kept
its name.
The Romulus' two tallest sizes were a whole 'nother model, the
Redwood.
Bagginses out, Sackvilles in.

On the other hand, the Atlantis has been in production for a decade,
unchanged even in color (as far as I know).

Do you think it's just for fun? Is there's a magic notebook of awesome
bike names that Grant is working through? Is it a way to differentiate
price points on similar bikes?

[RBW] Quickbeam Question - main bike, or backup bike?

2010-11-08 Thread Robert F. Harrison
My QB has grown into my primary bike in the year that I've owned it.
For the first few months i was much warier of using everywhere and
would ride my beater if I was going to have to park it outside for
long. After a while I just ended up preferring the ride so much that I
ride it pretty much exclusively these days. I still have beater (a
single sped converted from an old 90's ATB), a Giant Sedona I'm going
to donate to the local university bike co-op, a Bike Friday I take in
trips (it has been to Walnut Creek from Honolulu), and an old Raleigh
road bike in the Big Island.

My only complaint has been using my QB on camping trips. I did a 3
night 250 total miles tirip with no trouble but I think I might have
like a bike with deraillers for that.

Still its primary purpose is a city commuter in a city with w hills so
it's darn near perfect.

phil wood, chris king, white industries ... everyone has his/her
favorite. they're all good. but so are shimano XTs. whatever you
choose, just make sure their laced up and built into good strong
wheels. you'll never notice the hubs' performance, but you will
notice broken spokes and/or wobbly wheels.

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2010-11-08 Thread EricP
My Rivendell project for the winter - change my Sam Hillborne over to
V-brakes. Should make it easier to adjust handlebar height. Maybe,
possibly add a pair of interruptor levers too. Then fret and worry
for a while about what type of handlebar tape to install. Then pull
it off in frustration and just go back to black cork.

Might also swap out the crankset. Might have just kilt my third BB in
less than two years of the bike. Could replace. Or just put on the
external BB Deore crank I have. (Which has been on this bike before
and does the job.)

Yeah, and ride, too. But not my Rivendell outside.

My winter project is dialing the Hunqapillar in as a winter bike. The
29x2.1 Nokian's have been great. This weekend I swapped out the drops
for moustache bars to give me some leverage when I'm fighting the
tussocks. So far, so good. The next challenge will come when it gets
really cold and certain bearings stiffen up. I figure I'll get
everything ideal by springtime, when I'll start dialing in the
Hunqapillar as a dirt road touring machine. And next winter I'll buy
an actual snow bike, so everything I will have learned with the
Hunqapillar will go straight out the window.

I have White Industries M15s on my Saluki (the same bike as your Hilsen, in an

quite the same cachet as Phils, but they work as well, so far. Phils may last

Hope you enjoy many happy miles.

Re: [RBW] AHH on order

2010-11-08 Thread James Warren
David, you are going to love your bike. For what you described, the AHH is
perfect. I take mine off-road a bit at times, and its behavior on the road is
so smooth and good. It is so excellent that you are going to have a bike that
fits you, and this model nonetheless.

I highly recommend the Jack Browns as a way to optimize the bike, but I know
others work well on it too.

I often find myself thinking that the AHH is perhaps the best bike ever made. I
get to ride mine home from work today. Time to get that started.

Re: [RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2010-11-08 Thread erik jensen
sorting out all the random parts left over from the year, setting up a
proper workspace in my new home now that rain endangers working outside all
the time.

trying not to spend time on projects, just want to ride regularly this rainy
season round.

Indeed... I sure am smitten by her beauty... Ah, but let's not forget
Betty's cousin, the International Man of Mixte himself, Yves Gomez...
THAT is one fine-looking bike; I only wish we'd see more of these..

I can't help but see a Gomez in my future...

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2010-11-08 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Aside from "renaissancing" my 60s Gazelle Dutch twins, Huub and Mieke
(both of which are Sport Luxe single-speed coaster models, but will
get drum dynamo and 3 speed rear hubs), I plan to tweak/beautify the
Noodle bar setup on my Bomba, starting with a harlequin tape pattern,
funky whipping and a few coats of shellac. I am debating what type of
cushion (if any) I can get away with near the hoods... any ideas?

Also I will be tweaking my rack and bag setup, including permanently
"installing" the bag-stiffeners in my VO Campagne handlebar bag, and
making it easier to put on/ take off the rack and/or attach inside my
Wald basket (which BTW I will first transform into a custom "Woody"
basket)...

Also building up a 1983 StumpJumper into a fine rider/commuter with
vintage parts.
Finally, adding internal-geared and dyno drum hubbed-wheels to a 1985
Rockhopper

(Jeez!!! At this point it had better be a LONG winter... I mus'be
talkin boo... I'll never get through all of these projects )

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2010-11-08 Thread Beth H
Now that I've admitted that the All-Rounder is actually much closer to
my Dream Bike, I have a 99 LongLow that I need to figure out what to
do with. I will spend some time this winter tearing it down and trying
to rebuild it as a less-encoumbered roadie-style thing, with drops and
a compact double crankset, and see how I like that. Meanwhile, the All-
Rounder (same era) has turned out to be the Atlantis I thought I
always wanted, or perhaps even better than that.

Sweetie won't let me sell the LongLow -- there's too much history with
me and that frameset -- so I am playing with it to see what it tells
me. I expect it to be a long, mellow enjoyable putter.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Question - main bike, or backup bike?

2010-11-08 Thread Mojo
Patrick,

I can't speak to your questions. But as another data point, I have to
say I don't like my Q ride as much as the 2001/Curt road custom, or
the 2009/Waterford Legolas. The Q doesn't feel as lively as those
frames *to me.* Not that the single speed format isn't fun and not
that I don't enjoy my Q rides. I haven't done my homework to compare
tubing, but the Q from pure frame weight alone must have thicker
walled tubes. I am suggesting you may not like the SimpleOne ride
since you are spoiled by your customs. But of course YMMV

[RBW] Re: AHH on order

2010-11-08 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Wow, a 71 ??? Could this be the first TRIPLE TT Hilsen the world has
ever seen (Oh, Behave!)
Seriously, awesome choice. I can vouch for Phil Wood hubs based on
several experiences...

First, I actually had the pawls jam on my Phil 9-speed cassette disc
hub, and even though I thought maybe I had neglected it somehow, Phil
replaced it free based on their assessment that a Phil hub should
never fail like it apparently had.

Second, I recently ordered a 7-speed freewheel hub in the wrong size
(130mm spacing), and realized it a day after the order was placed...
The folks at Phil Wood had ALREADY shipped it (that's how good they
are), and yet were kind enough (since I was in a hurry to build my
wheels) to also ship the 135mm one, without asking for a credit card
or to pay for shipping... I sent shipping $ back in the return box.

Without hesitation I will buy Phil Wood hubs in the future... In fact
I am sure I will be a Phil Wood customer for life.

[RBW] AHH on order

2010-11-08 Thread dhk42
First post!

I've been lurking here for a while now as I dithered about my
potential purchase. After a second long conversation with RHQ I placed
an order for a 71cm A. Homer Hilsen.

Immediately after I was struck by the notion that I should have
enlisted the wisdom of this list to help me decide the right course.
Well, it is too late for you to help me decide between the 71 AHH and
the 68cm diagonal Bombadil. Not that I wouldn't listen to opinions on
the topic. :-)

But hey! It is not too late to talk about components.

So let's see, what do you need to know about me? I'm a 6'7" 250lb 45
year old neophyte cyclist who has never ever ridden on a bike that
fits or is set up properly. I have not owned or ridden a bike in a
long time for that reason. I plan to ride on roads, rail trails,
and dirt paths - I'm not sure how much. I'll never race. I'll never
get really serious about hard core off roading. I have no plans to do
lots of touring.

First question: Phil hubs - are they worth it?

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2010-11-08 Thread MichaelH
I am retiring on Dec. 3rd, and people keep asking me, "What are you
going to DO?" I tell them, "Nothing, and I won't even start before
10:30."

Actually, I'm in a quandary about my winter project. I have a 1984
Trek 620 Touring bike and I love the way it rides, but it maxis out at
32mm tires, with fenders, and I'd like bigger on a touring bike. I
have put a lot of nice parts on the frame, but stuff I don't use
anymore, like 9 speed ultegra brifters and I could try to sell it in
ebay. Or I could convert it to 650b, which involves having the canti
studs removed, building new wheels and buying new brakes. Hard to
justify but I hate parting with the frame. Or, I suppose i could just
live with it! What a thought.

The good news is on the wood is stacked!

I'm having my Atlantis repainted this winter. The original paint is
still in pretty good shape for the most part; other than minor
scratches all over it and a fairly significant ding/dent/gouge in the
top tube. But I've never been a huge fan of the stock 'lantis color
(although it has grown on me some). I'm having the repaint done by
Chris Kvale (a local frame builder) and while I'm at it, I'm going to
have him add mid-fork and mid-seat-stay rack braze-ons. And in a
distinctly non-Rivish move, I'm seriously thinking about having him
replace the threaded steerer with a threadless one. I just like the
threadless set-up a whole lot better and I found a TIG welded stem tby
Chris Kelly that would work perfectly. In fact, I could have it
painted to match.

2010-11-08 Thread stevep33
Just cleaned out the parts bin, and now overdue maintenance is the
next order of business...de-gunk, replace worn parts, find that creaky
noise, spray some frame saver, etc.

My reward is going to be building up a new 650b all-rounder/commuter
Banjo frame expected late this year. I'm hoping to get my hands on an
Alfine 11 speed hub whenever comes out.

I stared at that bike's pictures for quite a while. Thanks for linking it.

In some ways, I think the Betty Foy is the nicest bike that Rivendell sells.

I've got two Riv custom fixies, but I'd love a Riv-made fixie to
replace the (admittedly rather nice, but still not Riv) '73 Grand

between Simple One and QB, and when is the SO due? And, will it be

Re: [RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2010-11-08 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Bikes or bars (tape)? Curious about shellacking frames -- if that is
what you did.

This weekend's project: sturdy-fied a set of Axiom Dutch panniers.
These are the ideal shopping panniers: big, relatively inexpensive,
boxy, stiffened so that you can drop a full paper grocery sack into
each side, easily drape over rack, cut away on leading side for foot
clearance. But the older ones, as mine, have fiddly straps under the
linking nylon webbing to attach them to the rack, AND they sag
(sometimes into the rear spokes) if you put 20 lb in one. I bought a
6' length of 1/2" metal strip, cut in half, bent each half to fit
inside the interior of the panniers' mouth, and riveted the bracings
in place. Then I constructed a riveted, on-its-side (or horizontal)
capital "I" on the center handle (central stiffener attached at ends
to perpendicular braces) so that I can just drape the pair over the
rack and secure one of the braces to a rack cross strut with a toe
strap. Now, stiff enough and, very easy on and off.

Re: [RBW] Why doesn't Riv reissue some bag classics?

2010-11-08 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I wish they'd re-issue their original, cheap saddlebag made from the
original burrito waxed cotton cloth. I recently got one from a fellow
RBW-er or iBobber. Sorry, the best photo I have is here:

http://picasaweb.google.com/BERTIN753/BIKESMISCELLANEA#5522534402352991554

Sturdy, just the right size, inexpensive, no chi-chi. Needless to say,
it works very well as a small bar bag.

I'm having Spectrum Cycles strip the white factory paint off of my
Seven Alaris to reveal the titanium hiding underneath, going with a
raw brushed finish. Then rebuild with all carbon/black parts (no
silver whatsoever) plus matching set of saddle and bar tape. Could use
some recommendations on which way to go here. I could go black of
course, but was thinking either green, honey or white Brooks might be
a nice contrast.

In the rain on Sunday I did give a couple bikes an extra coat of clear

My project is converting a ~1980 Takara "Overland" touring bike I

Re: [RBW] What's your winter project?

2010-11-08 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Me: #1: finally wire up the rack-mount dyno-tail light that has been
sitting on my workbench for 8 months. #2: perhaps undertake the huge
project of removing a saddle for recovering and installing another one
while I wait -- I'd rather re-tape bars or fix multiple flats than
have to re-adjust saddles. #3: perhaps re-route and re-secure the
dynowires on three bikes, replacing zip ties with little glued-on
loops cut from plastic swamp cooler/drip irrigation system tubing. (It
would be interesting to have someone braze bits of swamp cooler copper
tubing in places needed to secure and guide the wires -- maybe a later
project for repainting time?)

[RBW] What's your winter project?

2010-11-08 Thread William
As the weather turns cooler, I am starting to dwell on winter
projects. A lot of them are home and family related, but some of them
are Riv-ish, so I thought I would share. In 2010 I pretty much
overhauled my stable of bikes, and now am almost 100% dialed. So I'm
not due for any complete overhauls. I am building a second
configuration for my Bombadil. It's set up for dedicated dirt riding
now, but I'll be putting together a Campeur kit for it this winter
(drop bars, fenders, racks, bags). So next time a week-plus touring
opportunity presents itself, the Bombadil will be the bike for it.

What do you do in the winter? Overhaul your favorite bike? Go
through the parts stash and clean house? Start up a new bike
project? Take on a restoration?

[RBW] FS: VO Campagne Handlebar Bag with Decaleur Kit

2010-11-08 Thread bicitourist
This bag is a just about 1 year old. I used it on my surly (58cm) and
it worked great. Unfortunately on my new custom (62) the bag won't sit
on the rack and reach the decaleur. Bag does have a "smudge" on it
that won't come off! take a look at the pics i did my best to show
this. This beauty mark was from when i shellacked my grip tape.

Looking for 100.00, if you feel this is out of line let me know.

[RBW] Re: Why doesn't Riv reissue some bag classics?

2010-11-08 Thread scott
I really wanted one of the plaid hobo bags and by the time I had the
money, they were gone. I asked Grant if they were coming back with
this new round of Smyth bags and he said they were a terrible seller,
so no. I think a Sackville hobo would be the absolute perfect bag
ever, but I don't think it will ever happen. I'll be happy with my old
beat Acorn and with the wonderful Riv bags available.

[RBW] Re: Why doesn't Riv reissue some bag classics?

2010-11-08 Thread Jim Cloud
I would imagine that, given the universe of eBay buyers, the sale of a
now defunct Rivendell bag made by Duluth or Frost River (the Rivendell
Boxy bag and the "Little Joe" saddlebag that were sold recently were
of this vintage) doesn't necessarily mean that the demand for these
bag would justify their return to the Rivendell bag line. Personally,
I think that some of the current Rivendell bags are better designs
than the earlier models. The present SackVille BarSack, for example,
is definitely (IMO) a better designed bag than the earlier Boxy Bag
that was made by Duluth or Frost River. I owned the earlier model
(and subsequently sold it on eBay), and I never really liked the
method of closure of the bag's top.

In addition, for Rivendell to establish another bag supplier to re-do
the older bags doesn't really sound very practical. From a business
perspective, and the ability to maintain a stock of the bags that they
sell, too many suppliers would just be a headache for the Rivendell
operations. I do think that the availability of the current Rivendell
bags in additional colors (especially an olive green or khaki) would
be a nice idea.

[RBW] Re: Why doesn't Riv reissue some bag classics?

2010-11-08 Thread rperks
In the case of that particular bag, I think they see the newer BarSack
as an improvement and progress. That is likely the view on many of
the designs. They have said that about their frames in the past as
well. While a couple of the bags fetch good money on ebay, it is hard
for us to look from the outside and know if they were great sellers to
start with, or if the newer offerings are selling far better than the
old ones did. What we do know is that they like to make improvements
and leave some of the old designs behind.

Some of the designs while functional were never very consistent
dimensionally. I love Hobo bags, but an inch here or there makes it a
pretty different bag, and I am not sure there were ever two the same.
I think this combined with some general supply chain issues is why we
see so few of these and have yet to see Smythe bags in a while.

Maybe there will be something new in the works, the stuff they have
coming out of RI is very well made, just not oll of the "classic"
designs of the past. Maybe a new company will fill in on the
percieved demand?

They have.

http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/sackville-barsack/20-208

It was a long wait. The original bag was expensive and even more
expensive with a purchase of the required rack and maybe RBW felt that
handlebar bag needs were being adequately met by Berthoud. I own a
lot of Baggins and Nigel Smyth bags but I like the quality and design
of the Sackvilles even better.

[RBW] Re: wanted Rear derailer

2010-11-08 Thread Garth
I bought a couple of Deore LX M581 RD's recently, all silver ones.
These models are from a couple of years ago.
http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/RD309A01-Shimano+Lx+M581+Rear+Derailleur.aspx?sc=FRGL

The problem with the good looking vintage RD's is the lack of
capacity. I have one of these that I thought would be great for my
Bombadil, but I exceeded it's capacity.

[RBW] Re: Another Roadworthy Simpleone('er two)

2010-11-08 Thread A D

Great build.

Your Rodeo is simply gorgeous too. It must be fun deciding which bike
to take out for the day.

[RBW] Why doesn't Riv reissue some bag classics?

2010-11-08 Thread Eric
I've watched with great anticipation some great older Riv bags on
eBay.

Recently, this handlebar bag fetched more than $200

Found here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320611490808&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Another Baggins style saddle bag fetched close to $180 on eBay. So
obviously there is a demand for well designed bags, as the way Acorn
bags are in stock for what seems like seconds. And I'm a more recent
Riv aficionado so I missed out on buying 'em.

Anyways, why doesn't Riv reissue these bags?

[RBW] Re: wanted Rear derailer

2010-11-08 Thread DavidPBest
I just went through this outfitting a new Atlantis. Finding a silver
RD that will go up to 34T is a challenge. Yes, the one Riv sells
(Shimano RD-M770-SGS) meets the capacity, but it's the Low Normal
version, it only comes with a black tensioner (go figure). The
Shimano RD-M772-SGS (Top Normal) is as silver as they get in the
current lineup (at least that I could find). Even this one has some
black on it: http://tinyurl.com/2wasf4q This RD is about $80
(mailorder) or $100+ at LBS.

There is a previous model that will probably work for you - the RD-
M761-SGS: http://velospec.ru/components/shimano/rdm761sgs
One of these RD-M761-SGS is for sale NOS on eBay for $65:

Hope this helps.
