Re: [RBW] Re: Schwinn Paramount P-15 Country Bike

True enough. I own 4-5 26 Paramounts(black, yellow, orange, green, brown).
Probably will sell them pretty soon, as it's become clear that a bicycle
collection can own me rather than vice-versa. Looking for a chrome one though!!

I haven't bothered to weigh the bike. I'm sure it's no lightweight.
Schwinn had a design philosophy, back in the day, that stressed
rigidity over lightness (Ref: The Custom Bicycle, Michael J. Kolin
and Denise M. de la Rosa, copyright 1979). They actually spec'd a
special frametube set from Reynolds that was heavier than the standard
531DB set. The weight was concentrated in thicker butts on the tube
 ends.

As some have commented, the additional weight of a filled water bottle
is equivalent to the weight that many have stressed out about!

 those brakes!

The other recent changes made were to fit the bike with wider
handlebars and a suitable stem. I'd used some original Cinelli Giro
d'Italia handlebars and Cinelli 1-A stem for some time, but the narrow
width (38 cm) of the Cinelli bars just felt very constrained. I'd
guess I'd gotten use to the wider bars on my Rivendell Road Standard,
which are the Nitto B-185 type in 44 cm width (basically the same bar
as the current Mark's Bar sold by Riv - although the Mark's Bar is
 a lightened type).

The bars that I chose to use are the Nitto B-176 Dream bars, along
with a Nitto Pearl stem that I had available from my stock. I also
decided to switch the derailleur controls from H/B end type to a set
of classic Campagnolo Record downtube control levers.

This is a really nice bike! Here's the photos:

Leslie,

I was wondering the same, unfortunately a 700c-to-650b conversion seems
unlikely with those Paul brakes. Does anyone know of a brake that would
work ?

You can see the brake close-up in this (very large) photo of Tom N.`s

To go from 559mm rim to 650b (584mm), brake pads move 12.5mm up.
To go from 700c (622mm) to 650b (584mm), brake pads move 19mm down.
Assuming all else is the same, pads need to move 31.5mm down from their
position in the photo, but there seems to be not that much room :(

Btw, the brakes seems to Paul Motolite`s

Interesting theory.
Assuming the rule is that the diagonal bisects the rear triangle, maybe
larger frames move the midpoint of the seat tube up to the point where it
aligns the top tube. The bike has 650B wheels, so the biggest it could be
is a 58.
If only there was some way we could ask the designer of the frame? :)

Sounds like a great adventure you're planning.

they have the big easy to ride cruisers. Try Waterfront bikes on the West

Nothing the matter with that, but figured I'd ask if there is something I
 don't know about.

 Ideas? Thoughts?

[RBW] Re: Does this Betty Foy Look Different to you?

2012-07-10 Thread JaxandPuzzle
Hey, that's my bike!

Yes, the top tube is in line with the middle set of stays. And the fork has
more bend too. I personally feel this line is much more aesthetically
pleasing, and was surprised and pleased when it arrived this way (September
2011). I think the change only applies to my size (58). Maybe because
Velouria from Lovely Bicycle! kept complaining about it ;-).

Re: [RBW] Re: Does this Betty Foy Look Different to you?

2012-07-10 Thread Jeremy Till
I also think it's a function of size, probably related to the challenges of
attaching 3 sets of stays to the rear dropout; on the smaller frames they
have to have the kink so the mid-stays stay below the seat stays. On the
larger frames, maybe, the greater angle between chain and seat stays allow
the mid-stays to come in at a higher angle, lined up with the seat tube.

[RBW] Best 700c X FAT fenders?

2012-07-10 Thread PATRICK MOORE
What are the widest 700c fenders available -- the 60 mm Planet Bike
ones? And of those available, which are the best in terms of value and
sturdiness? I don't need very long ones since I generally amputate the
rear to end just aft of the rack and, in front, prefer to use a long
flap that will not be damaged by hitting obstacles.

('Nother question: for your Fargo owners or former owners: what have
you found to be the best weight distribution, front vs rear, for loads

[RBW] For Sale: Acorn Boxy Rando Bag

2012-07-10 Thread Mojo
I just bought the Tall Rando Bag from Acorn, and will post my impressions
after I receive and ride it for awhile.
But now I have an extra Boxy Rando Bag for sale. Here is a picture on my
AllRounder (and notice the room for a bigger bag to rise to my bars)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/7543755828/
and here is info from Acorn's website (note mine is a tan color not this
rich brown, see above)
http://acornbags.bigcartel.com/product/boxy-rando-bag

The bag is like new, all the cotton duck and leather are supple and not sun
damaged.
There are a few smudges:
the first you can see in the above picture on the right side of the front
flap.
Then the left front pocket has some slight discoloration on it's flap
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/7543827962/
and there appears to be a bit of dirt on that pocket's base
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/7543837712/
The bottom is clean due to good fenders.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cool knobbly tires at BG

2012-07-10 Thread BSWP
No doubt - these are good tires, I wish I had more clearance. In that shot,
look at the top, and you'll see the chain links, for perspective. There's
just not enough room for a quarter to slip past the chainstays, at least
not on my 66cm QuickBeam.

The BG site says they're 43 mm wide, the informative sheet that ships with
the tires says they're 44mm wide, and my own measurements (across widest
points) showed 45.3 mm. I guess different rims might change the profile, I
have Velocity Dyads and I measured the tires with approx 70 psi inflation.

BTW, I have a buyer for the tires.

[RBW] Re: Seattle Tour.

2012-07-10 Thread Mike
I can understand the allure of riding the coast to SF but really, if I were
you guys, I'd head to the Cascades from Seattle and ride down to Crater
Lake/Klammath Falls and then catch the train home. But you can always save
that for another trip.

I think if you're willing to put in long days you could do it in a week and
a half. Like Northern CA the coast can be damp, foggy and cold but it's
also amazingly beautiful. I've ridden the OR coast on multiple brevets and
there's a nice shoulder. My friends who have toured it always give the
thumbs up to the cheap hiker/biker sites.

Whatever you do, I'm sure it's gonna be a great time. Looking forward to

I went with two separate shock cords. One for the left and one for the

The next several shots in my photostream show how I close the bag.

Testimonial for the F-15 rack. I am blown away how rigid that thing is. I
was not expecting it to be very rigid, with that tuning fork design, I was
expecting to see the thing bounce all over the place, like those bent steel
ones we've all seen in the 70's and 80's. This rack is freaking solid. I
am really really impressed with it.

[RBW] Re: mini rando bag

2012-07-10 Thread Rick
I have the canvas baggins edition of the li'l loafer on two bikes (one
with the old green raincover), and the main improvement I see in the
Acorn is the non-zippered access point on the main pocket. I don't
dislike tweed, but do prefer the tan canvas / brown leather style.

I regretably lost the matching baggins Keven's bag off the back of the
Atlantis to the proverbial Bicycle Thief last week. Cut the zipties
and made off with my kit, minipump, etc. I suspect he was after the
saddle, which was somewhat more effectively secured to the frame, and
he just took the bag as compensation for his efforts, the bastidge
(impotent fist shaking implied).

I agree that the Nitto F-15 rack is very solid. It also mounts on a

[RBW] Impressed by an AHH (though I don't own one)

2012-07-10 Thread Joan Oppel
I led a group ride this morning for one of the local bike clubs. Richard showed up with his brand new A Homer Hilsen. He's very excited about the bike, has posted here about his excitement (blueride2). It's a pretty standard Riv build. I took my Bleriot to the ride - another standard Riv build. Differences are:Bleriot has Hetres (45 front, 50 rear), AHH has Jack Browns (at 70 front and rear)Bleriot has SKS fenders, AHH is fenderless (though he is waiting for the fenders).Bleriot is a 53, AHH is a 55.Bleriot has a trunk bag and rack(multi-tool, spare, patch kit) and rack, AHH had just a tiny seatbag.Since I can ride a 55, I took Richard's bike for a short spin. Wow, was I impressed. It felt - sprightly, lively. Definitely different than the Bleriot. I'm wondering why. There's maybe a slight difference in weight between the two bikes, by feel. Is it the tires? the tubeset? Joan

Re: [RBW] Best 700c X FAT fenders?

Those are what I used. They fit a 2.1 tire underneath. But I didn't check
out any other offerings. Just purchased the PB and went with it. So
something may be better.

Never loaded my Fargo up too awful much, but after about 25 to 30 pounds in
the back, the front end did become a bit light and wanted to wander on some
climbs. Again, that could be influenced by the fact I'm a heavy rider (230
or so) and that affects handling more than weight of bags, IMO. (That's
from experience with the Fargo, Kogswell and a couple of other bikes I no
longer own.)

Will admit to having some seller's remorse over the Fargo, it was a nice
handling bike. But just kept making me do silly long off-paved road
riding, which is not good for my hand conditions.

Re: [RBW] Impressed by an AHH (though I don't own one)

2012-07-10 Thread James Warren

I've had the same experience in comparing a SH to an AHH: same fit, similar
toptube, both set up with similar 36-spoke wheels, Brooks saddles, and typical
Nitto Aluminum bits. Both with Jack Brown greens. The big difference in the
frames was 60 cm SH with 6 degree toptube slope versus a 65 cm AHH with a 1.5
degree toptube slope, but the bar height relative to saddle was the same. AHH's
chainstay was 0.5 cm shorter! There's faerie dust on those AHH's!

[RBW] Today's ramble.

2012-07-10 Thread Mike
The weather here in Portland has been beautiful lately. Downright
exceptional over the past three days while I was at work. I woke up this
morning and it was cooler but could tell it would burn off. My wife is out
of town and we have a puppy so I can't get away for all day rides but I did
get in a 3hr ramble passing through Forest Park twice. When I first entered
Forest Park and ended up taking Fire Rd 1 which I had never ridden before.
It's quite steep in parts and so I just dismounted and just walked a few
sections which was fine. I was on my Hilsen and one area where it doesn't
do so great is steep scrabbly climbs. I guess I could have muscled up the
climb but that just didn't seem fun. I exited Forest Park and headed up to
Skyline on the pavement and took that for a little ways before dropping
back down into Forest Park via Saltzman and made my way down to Hwy 30 and
across the St Johns Bridge and back home, stopping for tacos and ice cream
along the way.

It was just a really great ride. I was on my Hilsen with platform pedals
and wearing some Musa shorts and an LL Bean seersucker/hiking shirt I
recently purchased on sale. The shirt worked well except for on descents
where it tends to flap in the wind a bit too much for my taste. I guess I
could tuck it in and the problem would be solved.

After spending so much time focused on randonneuring for the past couple of
months it was really nice to just get out for a ramble. I'll do some
variation on the ride tomorrow and the next day. When my wife returns I'll
hopefully get out for an overnight camping trip.

Here's a photo set:

Re: [RBW] Best 700c X FAT fenders?

2012-07-10 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Thanks for those comments, Eric. Yes, the Fargo certainly does invite
off road rambles (luckily here the rains have arrived and at least
some of the dirt roads nar the river are again open to the public).

The PBs are a wee bit narrower than the 60 mm BAs, but they stop the
spray perfectly well. I just wonder if there are any fenders wider
yet. Certainly the PBs are a good buy.

The front end does get light with 30 lb in the rear, which is why I
want to experiment with distributing most or at least more of it to
the front: am waiting to operate on my two pairs of Axiom Dutch
panniers so that each side can be mounted separately.

Odd: neither the Fargo nor the current Riv handle rear loads as well
as the Motobecane and my first, 1995 Riv, even though the Motobecane
is very light 531 tubing and the '95 Riv was light 753 with short
(42.5 cm) stays and a steeper head (73 versus the current Rivs' 72.5
or so). The Riv waggles with as little as 25 lb while the Motobecane
was steady with 10 lb more. The old Riv handled 30 lb in rear panniers
with aplomb -- I could ride it no hands at 10 mph as well as at 20.
Wonder what geometry/tubing/etc makes for good rear load handling? All
three have very stiff racks, either Fly -- Motobecane and '95 Riv;
Logo (Fargo) or -- current Riv -- custom, 10 mm stainless steel tubing
which is at least as stiff as the Fly.

It's quite steep in parts and so I just dismounted and just walked a few
sections which was fine. I was on my Hilsen and one area where it doesn't do
so great is steep scrabbly climbs. I guess I could have muscled up the
climb but that just didn't seem fun. I exited Forest Park and headed up to
Skyline on the pavement and took that for a little ways before dropping back
down into Forest Park via Saltzman and made my way down to Hwy 30 and across
the St Johns Bridge and back home, stopping for tacos and ice cream along
 the way.

It was just a really great ride. I was on my Hilsen with platform pedals and
wearing some Musa shorts and an LL Bean seersucker/hiking shirt I recently
purchased on sale. The shirt worked well except for on descents where it
tends to flap in the wind a bit too much for my taste. I guess I could tuck
it in and the problem would be solved.

After spending so much time focused on randonneuring for the past couple of
months it was really nice to just get out for a ramble. I'll do some
variation on the ride tomorrow and the next day. When my wife returns I'll
hopefully get out for an overnight camping trip.

The BG site says they're 43 mm wide, the informative sheet that ships with

have Velocity Dyads and I measured the tires with approx 70 psi inflation.

 Differences are:
Bleriot has Hetres (45 front, 50 rear), AHH has Jack Browns (at 70 front

Bleriot has SKS fenders, AHH is fenderless (though he is waiting for the

 Bleriot is a 53, AHH is a 55.
Bleriot has a trunk bag and rack(multi-tool, spare, patch kit) and rack,
AHH had just a tiny seatbag.

 Since I can ride a 55, I took Richard's bike for a short spin. Wow, was I

 Bleriot.

I'm wondering why. There's maybe a slight difference in weight between
the two bikes, by feel. Is it the tires? the tubeset?

[RBW] Question about Riv Custom on Ebay

2012-07-10 Thread Peter M
So a friend of mine (seriously, not me!) wants to know if this custom
on ebay will take a 650b/hetre conversion. I am not too familiar with
these older Rivs so thought I would ask if anyone here has done this
kind of thing. I would think the Dia-compe Mod 750s would get you the
reach but again, will the bb drop be too much and will it even fit the
Hetres or is this guy dreaming? He really wants a 650b/Hetre bike but
wants something more roady than the AHH/SH since he is only 135lbs.

[RBW] What Now? and other books.

2012-07-10 Thread Mike
I saw that RBW is now selling What Now? I imagine it's gotta be pretty go
for them to go to the trouble of carrying it. Anyone here read it or intent
to read it? I've only ever read one book by Anne Patchett--State of Wonder.
It was okay. I need to read Bel Canto as I've had a lot of people recommend
it.

Since this tends to be a time of year where people get away for bike
camping and vacation, I'm wondering what people are reading or planning to
read this summer? I just started Buried in the Sky and really like it. In
fact, I need to pull myself away from the computer and spend some time
reading it.

Re: [RBW] Question about Riv Custom on Ebay

2012-07-10 Thread cyclotourist
I don't think any Rivendells have ever had less than 70mm of drop. Unless
it was a very custom-custom, plan on 70, and don't be surprised to have it
be 72 or 73. That's on the edge of 650b compatibility. The 750s should work
fine and I see a cable hanger in the front, but Tektro 559s would be
perfect as well. Fitting Hetres would would just be a guess... maybe, maybe
not. It's going to be a chunk of change for a guess if you can't confirm
measurements from the seller.

I'd recommend getting a 650B AHH and build it up super-light if that's what
he wants. It could be as roadie as he can afford! :-)

Re: [RBW] Question about Riv Custom on Ebay

Maybe try a 650b conversion on one of his current bikes? He wouldn't get

Re: [RBW] Question about Riv Custom on Ebay

2012-07-10 Thread Joe Bernard
Your friend needs to be disabused of the notion that the AHH is not a road
bike. My Romulus was a pure 700c road bike like that Ebay Riv, and my AHH
rode like the Romulus. Hilsen can be used for medium-load touring and
gravel treks, but it is not a touring bike. It's a 650b road bike.

and loved it so I think I just need to turn the screws a bit tighter. I am
tired of carrying around his stuff since his CF rig has no capacity at all
and is really only good for going fast over smooth pavement in perfect
 weather, haha.

be 72 or 73.

I'd recommend getting a 650B AHH and build it up super-light if that's
what he wants. It could be as roadie as he can afford! :-)

So a friend of mine (seriously, not me!) wants to know if this custom

these older Rivs so thought I would ask if anyone here has done this
kind of thing. I would think the Dia-compe Mod 750s would get you the
reach but again, will the bb drop be too much and will it even fit the
Hetres or is this guy dreaming? He really wants a 650b/Hetre bike but
wants something more roady than the AHH/SH since he is only 135lbs.

Re: [RBW] Question about Riv Custom on Ebay

2012-07-10 Thread Peter Morgano
I hear you Joe, I tried to sell him the 54 AHH but he kept saying it was
too heavy, he is a good friend but this whole heavy vs light argument does
get old so looking for him to take the plunge and get a nice practical
ride. He does have an older Peugeot PX10 we could convert but with its
'racing geometry it wont be nearly as comfortable as a nice AHH. Maybe a
decent place to start though.

Re: [RBW] 650b Atlantis?

2012-07-10 Thread Thomas Nezovich
Leslie, the fenders are leftovers from the previous 26 inch tires. They were
26x1.75 Paselas and they ended up about 42 mm wide or about the same as the
Hetres. I don't know about Quasimotos but the largest tires I had on the
Atlantis when using 26 inch wheels were 50 mm Marathons which were near to 50
mm on Rhynolites.
On Jul 9, 2012, at 11:00 PM, Leslie wrote:

Thx; good point on the Paul posts allowing the pads to slide UP; If I'd
thought through more earlier, I'd hopefully have realized, a 700c would have
to have the posts lowered, or switch to sidepulls which, isn't going to
 happen w/ an Atlantis)...

But, good to know, you can fender Hetres on it... That's good... w/o
fenders, how big of a tire could you fit? Quasimotos?
