Re: [RBW] Fender Install Help (Fender Wedge)

2013-02-08 Thread Minh
Rene,

Thanks for responding, i feel really dumb because when i hold it in my hand or
read your instructions it sounds really easy but when i go to do it i cannot
figure it out. Maybe i have a spatial comprehension issue, but let me try to
explain my confusion.

The way i have it setup now with the metal washer and rubber washer the fender
is held up tight against the fork crown, there is now sag. When i tried
swapping it out with the wedge, there are a few things i don't understand.
-is the wedge actually bolted down? with the big hole in the center, even when
i bolt everything together, i can just lift it off the top of the daruma
(before i slide it into the fork crown)
-the 'well' in the wedge on the fork-crown side is so deep that if i try to
bolt the daruma only, the eyelet on the daruma that the fork-crown-bolt slides
through would be below the edge of the wedge, i wouldn't be able to get the
bolt through(and the daruma threads would actually be too deep in the underside
of the fender.

In order to get over the second problem, i added spacers to push the daruma
higher into crown, adding as many spacers as possible i am able to get
everything bolted and mounted, but it's not tight against the fork crown, it
sags 5mm (?), i can force it up by using a third contact point with my front
rack, but i'd prefer for it to be tight against the fork on it's own. Are
your's tight against the fork crown? Thinking about it now, if i removed the
rubber washer and added more spacers it would push it higher into the crown,
but then the eyelet on the daruma would't actually hang on the thru bolt.

Now i might have the wrong hardware as i've swapped out the different bits with
my fenders. I'm trying to do this with a set of VO fenders. and i've tried
two different daruma's that i have.

Thanks for any tips, in the end (after an hour of fiddling) i just put the
rubber+metal washers back in place and tightened everything back togther, i
really could've used a picture guide for this, but i've always had issues
trying to decipher fender installation instructions!

Not at all. The Bombadil was marketed (that word doesn't seem quite right
since we're talking about RBW) as a mountain bike. It's reasonable that a
mountain bike should be able to handle a 2.25 tire with mud clearance. It's
not like saying, the Roadeo is great an all but why can't it handle Big
Apples?

In the end it sounds like the tire clearance wasn't an issue with the

[RBW] Re: Fender Install Help (Fender Wedge)

2013-02-08 Thread sameness
Never installed one, but by the looks of it, the wedge fits between the
underside of the fork crown and the rubber washer itself, thin side forward
so as to reduce the squished/not-very-compressed effect (to borrow from
their technical parlance) on the washer. It's not meant to replace the
washer itself.

Apologies if this was obvious, but it's all I've got!

[RBW] Re: Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?

2013-02-08 Thread Julian
We've ridden a 700c steel Trek tandem from the early '90s for a number of
years w/ 35c tires and fenders. I'm big (6'7), stoker small (5'2), team
weight somewhere around 340 total. Ridden mostly on road, but on some
non-pave trials, the worst of which was the CO Canal (roots, rocks, mud,
and ruts), and while a little extra cush would sometimes be good, we've
been fine. We bought our Trek used and really enjoyed it.

That said, we've been saving our pennies for several years and have ordered
a custom Bilenky 650b randonneur/travel SS coupled bike that is designed
for Hetres w/fenders. You are right in your observation that the majority
of stock road tandem makers (esp. Santana) seem to be trying to emulate
single bike styling and design w/ low spoke count wheels w/ narrow tires.
There are a few exceptions, but custom is not too far off the cost of an
upmarket stock bike, so if the budget allows I'd definitely go custom (or
look for a deal on a used bike w/ room for at least 35c tires and
semi-sensible geometry).

Seems like most tandems out there follow the skinny tire theme, with the

tire clearances don't seem to push as far north as nearly all Riv singles.
So wondering if there are any tandem riders here and what tire widths they
prefer. On my Sam I ride 33/35mm tires often on marginal roads. So
wondering what that might translate to on a 700c tandem?

[RBW] Re: Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?

2013-02-08 Thread Salween
Wow, thank you all so much for the input. Pretty much confirms what I
thought that we would probably want clearances for up to 50mm with fenders.

1) Co-Motion Java

Yes, should have mentioned that I've looked pretty long and hard at this
offering, but wondered if the frame might be a bit overkill as we won't
necessarily be doing much trail per say, and as was noted Co-Motion's Dawn
said it was stiffer than their Speedster. Though I'm pretty tall, 36
inseam, but we're not a an overly heavy team at 280#?

Also, while it says touring, kind of surprised that it's lowest gear with
29er tires is a 30-34--and the granny can't get much smaller My Sam's got
lower gears than that, as do Co-Motions touring singles. Also, the duel
disks seem a bit sub-optimal for descents over a mile or so with gear
(overheating)? Seems like the tried and true cantis with drum would be
better--at least as an option? So certainly would be looking at building
out a frame if go this rout. When I asked about fitting a 64/104 spidered
triple, the sales rep would not confirm it would fit and said I would need
to check with the crank supplier-DaVinci? Also don't know about room for
canti studs on the rear given how the triangle is configured? Will need to
check that too.

2) Wheel diameters (26, 650b, 700c)

Yup, trust 26 will offer the greatest confidence, and can confirm on our
Cannondale that 40* Rhyno Lites can really take a beating and hold true
(though one broken nipple) for thousands of miles. However, it seems 700c
rim/wheel strength can be pretty good these days as well, and I think we
might find a bit more comfort over the smaller ruts and long haul with the
slightly longer circumference. Hard to know exactly, but I'm far more
comfortable on my Sam with 33/35mm tires than the Cannondale with
26x1.9--and their could be all manner of reasons for this beyond the
tires/wheels: aluminum tubes So exploring the 700c option and
wondering how wide we should be prepared to go if we choose to.

The 650b option is interesting. Certainly a growing number of tire choices
out there. But I've not seen many rim options at 36-hole and none at
40-hole, but maybe 36 is enough for our needs? What are folks using for
touring tandems?

3) R+E

Yes, had a visit there and test road one of their tandems. Nice folks for
sure. One reason the Java looks interesting is that we likely may want a
pair of couplers as we move/travel with the bike a lot, and one less tube
would be kind of nice. The R+E frame price would sill be a bit less though.
But one thing that I found a bit odd though, is that when looking at their
build options, say substituting DaVinci cranks or a Thudbuster ST stoker
post, R+E is actually charging customers well above the retail price if you
just went ahead and purchased them on you own--independently of the fact
that it's a substitution for the stoker post or Sugino tandem crankset.
Same with Phil hubs, etc. There's no more work involved? In general,
however, their philosophy seems to be more Riv-like than most, and like
that.

Again, this input has been very useful, especially hearing from an actual
Java owner, and look forward to any more that might follow.

the eyelet is in the wrong spot.

I guess i just don;t have the right daruma to use the wedge, i need one with
the slot in the daruma a little higher for the combination of fork+ fender that
i have, but i appreciate all the input to affirm that it is in fact simple, but
that i don't have the right hardware to make it work.

[RBW] Thrifty Cycling

2013-02-08 Thread campyonlyguy
Here's a question for everyone: What's your best cycling deal of all time? I'll
start with a few recent examples of great stuff that I got for close to nothing
or … nothing:

-- My late 60s Raleigh Superbe, purchased at a yard sale for $5. A day's worth
of elbow grease (washing, scrubbing, and polishing) turned it into a very nice
looking bike. I had to spend about $10 to buy a missing part, and I bought a
used Brooks Flyer to replace the awful modern saddle the bike came from. Also
put on a Carradice bag that I already had. Similar bikes show up on eBay for
about $500.

-- The Sigma computer on my random bike, found in a planter in downtown Davis
by my daughter. With the addition of a $5 mount (eBay), it works perfectly.

-- The wireless Cateye computer on my folding rando bike, found on the road by
me. I bought a $5 mount online, and paired it with a sending unit I already
had. Works perfectly.

-- My favorite cycling shoes, a pair of Specialized BG MTB-type shoes, bought
from a fellow local cyclist for $10. I originally planned to use them for wet
weather and muddy rides, but they became my favorite shoes, and have been on my
feet for an 1,100-mile ride from Santa Rosa to Seattle (www.wheelshorth.org),
several brevet series, and PBP in 2011.

So … what's your best deal ever?

[RBW] Thrifty Cycling

2013-02-08 Thread Christopher Murray
I bought a NOS Landshark frame and fork for $150. It was the perfect size and
had never been built up. This was in 2005.

Also bought a new Wanta lugged frame for $100. Came with a matching (though
non- lugged) fork. It was my size as well. Alan Wanta is a smaller regional
frame builder.

And finally, bought a brand new Waterford 2200 with full Ultegra from a shop
for $1299. Also my size and had the flame/ fade orange and red paint job.
Someone ordered it and backed out.

Oh wait. Also got my wife one of the Rams that Riv donated to the
non-profit in SF (forget the name) for $1500. This was the standard Ram build.

Which do I think was the best deal? Prob the Landshark but the others are close.

Cheers,
cm

[RBW] Surprise! When a really nice MB-1 and MB-2 falls into your lap...

2013-02-08 Thread Addison Wilhite
Forgive the cross post please...

A friend who owns BuzzBombBicycles who specialize in restoring old bicycles
sent me a note last week to swing by to see a couple of bstones he was
asked to sell off (the original owner apparently passed away recently) and
here is what I found when I went into his backyard. Luckily the MB-2 was
not in my size...but curses the MB-1 was.

He is still looking at what he wants to sell that MB-2 for (a 1989). I
think it is a 19 or 20 inch frame size. I'd have to double check. Mostly
stock except for tires, grips, saddle, and pedals. Really nice shape.
Really nice to see a good lugged steel mtn bike in such good shape from a
great era of bikes. Enjoy.

[RBW] Re: Thrifty Cycling

2013-02-08 Thread dougP
In 2003, I thought I felt a bit guilty about spending around $2,200 for my
Atlantis. 10 years and thousands of pleasant miles later, it's hands down
the best bike money I've ever spent.

Another deal was the late 80s Panasonic DX-5000 from a bike shop
close-out. For $300, I got a complete bike with Shimano 600 components. I
purchased it with the intent of using the components on another bike but
liked the ride handling so well that I rode that bike until purchasing
the Atlantis.

The best return on investment I ever had was trading a Selle Italia Turbo
saddle for a Brooks B-17. The Selle was on the bargain table at my LBS.
It was some overly flashy red / green / white with gold trim anniversary
edition or something, but really ugly and about $10 (this in the day of
good $30 saddles). I picked it up as a back-up-just-in-case but never even
mounted it. Years later someone was looking for that exact saddle for a
collection, hence the trade.

Most of my cycling purchases are thrifted. My best deals, though, have been the
two bikes I bought at retail: my $1400 Quickbeam, and my $1400 Bontrager
Privateer.
The Privateer was on sale, after Trek retired the Bontrager bikes. It rode
better for me than the Ibis Mojo, and exactly the same as an IF hardtail that
cost twice as much. It's still a joy to ride. Maybe it planes, who knows.
The Quickbeam was exactly the bike I'd been waiting for (except I wanted more
clearance). It's still the bike that is my bike.

Actually, my wife's Trek Belleville was a great bargain at $250, since I traded
the rest of the cost in design work. Her previous bike was $25, and she rode it
A Lot. I sold it for $100. My low trail Ross was $25. Most free bikes I get
involve some time and money invested, and then are given away to friends and

But at our size, I wouldn't go with 650b. Why did you chose 650b for your

non-pave trials, the worst of which was the CO Canal (roots, rocks, mud,
and ruts), and while a little extra cush would sometimes be good, we've
been fine. We bought our Trek used and really enjoyed it.

That said, we've been saving our pennies for several years and have
ordered a custom Bilenky 650b randonneur/travel SS coupled bike that is
designed for Hetres w/fenders. You are right in your observation that the
majority of stock road tandem makers (esp. Santana) seem to be trying to
emulate single bike styling and design w/ low spoke count wheels w/ narrow
tires. There are a few exceptions, but custom is not too far off the cost
of an upmarket stock bike, so if the budget allows I'd definitely go custom
(or look for a deal on a used bike w/ room for at least 35c tires and
 semi-sensible geometry).

So wondering if there are any tandem riders here and what tire widths they
prefer. On my Sam I ride 33/35mm tires often on marginal roads. So
wondering what that might translate to on a 700c tandem?

My fondest memories of a deal in the cycling world occurred sometime back
in the late 70's when I walked into a LBS in Fort Wayne, IN, looking for
some components to complete the build of a Turin road bike (from back when
they had a frame builder on hand). I was caught leering at a set of Campy
Record SP brakes in the counter display case by a youngish employee who
came over to offer help. I asked him what the shop wanted for those brakes
and - so help me, I don't know if he was confused or what - he offered them
for something like $50.00. Needless to say, I snatched 'em up and walked
out with a big smile.

Hardly a Riv specific topic, but admittedly fun.

I found a guy on Craigslist who bailed out on a home-built recumbent

sold me the whole batch for $50. Must be $500-$600 worth of parts

I still have all of it...

2013-02-08 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Also, see Matt Chester on 63xc.com and on his own blog, 5 meters of
development (worth reading for other issues as well -- he's wordy and weird
but has some interesting takes on off road riding, off road bikes, and off
road bike setup. I personally find the Midge-+-Tektro hoods combo to be one
of the most, and perhaps even the most, comfortable hood position that I've
ever used -- and I was not at all expecting to do more than tolerate the
hoods on this bar. The extra wide hoods, not to mention the super wide
hooks, on the Woodchipper was one feature I didn't like; OTOH, WTBs and ilk
had too much flare and hoods too close together.

Of course, bars are second only to saddles in personal tastes, but I
personally have found the Midge almost -- not quite, but almost -- the
ideal compromise for my purposes, videlicet, comfortable on the road but
with a wide and secure (and comfortable) stance for off-road control.

On Fri, Feb 8, 2013 at 1:48 PM, Philip Williamson
philip.william...@gmail.com wrote:

I was thinking if you don't like angled hoods... The Midge hoods are

The tops on the Midges are narrower. I do have the narrower Woodchipper
bars, so that's something to account for, re my opinion.
Twentynineinches.com is the canonical source for flared drop comparisons.

Re: [RBW] Thrifty Cycling

2013-02-08 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I've gotten plenty of decent used bikes for peanuts or free because people
often think of me when they're cleaning out their garages.

But my attempt at thrifty cycling was a few years ago when somebody gave me a
Schwinn Traveler III in my size. I pumped up the tires and lubed the chain, and
it was ready to go. Nothing fancy about it, but it was decently comfortable and
the ride quality was ok. I decided to see how much I could get out if it for as
little $$$ as possible. That lasted about a week, until I found someone to give
me $100 for it. Then I went back to the Atlantis or Stumpjumper.

[RBW] Water Gap Adventure Loop - April 13-14

2013-02-08 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Attention Adventure Riders:

I am planning a 2-day adventure ride from the Delaware Water Gap (on the
NJ/PA border) up to Milford, PA, then back to the Gap the following day.
The element of adventure is due to the varied terrain we will encounter,
along with any last-minute or on-the-fly route changes (that could be
required due to several uncontrollable factors)... The only requirement: be
flexible, be adventurous, have fun...

Note: This ride is NOT RIV RALLY EAST; this is IN ADDITION TO Riv Rally
East (which is tentatively scheduled for early May in Virginia, stay tuned.)

Here are details about the Gap Adventure Loop:

*Route Summary (total approx 90 miles over 2 days), this will require an
overnight stay in a BB/Motel/Cottage in Milford PA; in other words, this
is a light tour; you will need to carry enough gear for the 2-day ride:*

The Delaware Water Gap was formed billions of years ago (OK, maybe only
millions) by ancient glaciers. Today it is an impressive natural landmark
(yes, Jersey has them) where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny
Mountain range in Western NJ, just East of Stroudsburg, PA. Our Day1 route
takes us up the Delware River along Old Mine Road, perhaps the oldest road
in the US (once used by Dutch settlers as a mining route, hence the name).
The rolling terrain consists of a mixture of paved and dirt roads, passing
through National Recreation and State Forest areas... It's suprisingly
remote for NJ. We will spend the night in quaint, historic Milford, PA,
just North of Dingman's Ferry over on the PA side. There are several
lodging options in Milford, and plenty of places to eat (See below links).

The Day 2 route is a bit more varied. After crossing back into NJ we start
off with a fairly strenous hill climb up into Stokes State Forest, where we
will traverse the heart of this rugged, beautiful forested preserve on
paved, jeep and single track trail. There may be a few dismount/portage
spots (i.e. stream crossings, rock gardens, rooty sections), but these are
relatively minor. The route emerges from Stokes Forest, continuing over
back roads down to the Paulinskil Trail, which is a dirt and gravel
rail-trail (popular with the equestrian community) that runs North-South
down the Paulinskil Valley on the East side of the Kittatinny Ridge (note:
we ride North on the West side of the Ridge on Day 1). The Paulinskil
Trail ends just 1/2 mile up the road from our starting point, near the
Water Gap.

The terrain on Day 1 is rolling, with no major climbs.
The terrain on Day 2 includes a pretty challenging climb early on, and a
few moderate uphills in the heart of Stokes, followed by a decent downhill
and a few rollers to get to the Paulinskil, which is a flat, but mixed
dirt/gravel surface that requires some pretty serious pedaling.

*Lodging Sat Night (in Milford, PA):* You will be responsible for
arranging your own lodging. Last time I slept at the Myers Country Motel
(which is actually a collection of basic, but very clean and comfortable
cottages), but there are also plently of BBs in town (link to lodging:
http://www.milfordpa.us/lodging.html) Note: not all lodging is right in
town; I strongly recommend checking that your choice is within the downtown
area.  ALSO, the link for Myer's Country Motel on that site isn't working;
here is the direct link. (I plan to stay here as I did last time; best deal
in town): http://www.myermotel.com/Welcome.html

*Lodging near the Water Gap (for out of state travelers, Friday night):*
Depending which direction you're coming from and if you want to stay near
the start, there should be plenty of places within a 30 minute drive of the
Gap. I would suggest using Google Maps to find lodging that suits your
travel schedule. The Water Gap is approx a 2 hour drive from Philly, and
approx a 90 minute drive from NYC, in case you prefer to drive to the start
early Sat morning.

*Other logistics:* I will arrange for a safe place to park our cars
overnight near the start of the ride, in Knowlton, NJ, just East of the
Gap. (Last time the local police/municipal staff allowed us to park in the
municipal building's parking lot; I will request permission to park here.

Kindly let me know if you plan to join us for this ride. It will be an
adventure, for sure. Also feel free to contact me directly if you need
more information.

Peace,

Bobby Birmingham

[RBW] Surprise! When a really nice MB-1 and MB-2 falls into your lap...

2013-02-08 Thread velomann
Yep - the red/white MB-2 is an 89; I have the identical bike in my basement.
I'm embarassed to say I've been sitting on it for nearly 2 years now after
picking it up on CL for $50. Original owner was a woman who used it on-road
only, including a couple times riding STP. My plan is to make it my go-to
utilitarian gravel road commuter do everything bike. I like the look of the
Brooks on it! only drawback I can see is there is no hole in the fork crown for
fender/rack mounting, and no front dropout mounts, though the rear has seatstay
and dropout mounts. I'm a little nervous about drilling the fork, but I think
I'll do it anyway. BTW, when my wife and I started dating and she was still
living at home, her parents wanted to get her a bike for Christmas. Portland
was all out, but I located an MB-6 like the one pictured over at the coast, and
was happy to make the deal and drive over and pick it up. She eventually passed
it on to one of her sisters who lives on a ranch in SE Oregon. Last I heard she
was still riding it on the gravel roads over there. Nice MB-1! Glad it fits.

[RBW] Re: Thrifty Cycling

2013-02-08 Thread rob markwardt
Buying bikes is usually a losing proposition for me (and I've bought a
lot), but I've had a few good finds. Took a gamble on a crappy
photo'd 80's Woodrup for a decent price. Came with Campy Cobalto
brakes that I sold that about paid for the whole bike (also sold the
frame, other bits, and still have the wheels). My best find though is
probably my Bleriot frame that I bought from the Minneapolis outfit
that was blowing them out at nearly break even prices. Can't remember
the exact deal but I bought one pretty early after they came out and
it was really inexpensive. Afterwards Rivendell got PO'd
(understandably), and the dealer raised prices...and went away??
Anyway it was good for me. Great frame, my first Rivendell, and to
this day, my favorite bike.

Here's a question for everyone: What's your best cycling deal of all time?
I'll start with a few recent examples of great stuff that I got for close to
 nothing or … nothing:

-- My late 60s Raleigh Superbe, purchased at a yard sale for $5. A day's
worth of elbow grease (washing, scrubbing, and polishing) turned it into a
very nice looking bike. I had to spend about $10 to buy a missing part, and I
bought a used Brooks Flyer to replace the awful modern saddle the bike came
from. Also put on a Carradice bag that I already had. Similar bikes show up
 on eBay for about $500.

-- The Sigma computer on my random bike, found in a planter in downtown Davis
by my daughter. With the addition of a $5 mount (eBay), it works perfectly.

-- The wireless Cateye computer on my folding rando bike, found on the road
by me. I bought a $5 mount online, and paired it with a sending unit I
 already had. Works perfectly.

-- My favorite cycling shoes, a pair of Specialized BG MTB-type shoes, bought
from a fellow local cyclist for $10. I originally planned to use them for wet
weather and muddy rides, but they became my favorite shoes, and have been on
my feet for an 1,100-mile ride from Santa Rosa to Seattle
(www.wheelshorth.org), several brevet series, and PBP in 2011.

So … what's your best deal ever?

[RBW] Seattle to Portland Pre-Ride Place to Sleep (night of July 12)

2013-02-08 Thread Eric Norris
Just sent in my registration for Seattle to Portland--third time I will have
ridden the course (once southbound and once northbound) and my first time as
part of the official ride.

I wonder if any Seattle-are Riv folks have a spare bed or couch that I could
use the night before the ride ... something in proximity to the start at UW
would be great, since I'll be there with just a bike. My plan is to fly in to
Portland, drop off my bike case there, then take the train to Seattle and ride
back to my stuff in Portland.

Thanks in advance!

Guy in the front is doing it on 23mm tires... doesn't mean you should, but
you can.

But the bonus feature for sure will be more pleasant with 35+ width.

No worries. I've used 35 mm tires that were undersized with no problems.
Now that I think about it, we've had people on Jack Browns (don't recall
the color) so 33.33 seems OK. Heck, Chris K would do this ride on his
Rodeo with 28s. Put on a blindfold pick a bike from your stash; any one
 will work :).

After much careful thought deliberation, I'll be on my Atlantis, with
whatever tires are on it at the moment. Run what you brung.

Great timing on this thread... I've got a bag of spikes sitting on my
workbench waiting to be installed. The Riv recommended drill then just
screw them in seemed counter intuitive. I was thinking a tap might be the
way to go. What size tap did you use, R. Utahn?

[RBW] Re: 40/24 double mod on Bombadil

2013-02-08 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
I've run the 40/26 in the past. Short answer is that it's great
configuration. Enjoy it.

A few more data points... FWIW...
I run a 36/24 (steel/steel) on my Big Dummy... 26t is fine on my Homer but
the 24t comes in handy when the load gets big. 2t makes a difference.

For reasons too long and not important enough to explain here... about 6
months ago I switched from 40/26 on my AHH to 42/38/26. I'm not sure if the
42/38 is technically a half-step, but it seems to give me a smaller jump
than a rear shift... fun to toy with.

the shop for an overnighter trip when low and behold his bike is gone.
Apparently Grant, Brian or Mark were wondering if Dustin's bike would fit
the hub rack, so they took his bike in and fitted the rack on Dustin's
bike. Before Dustin could object he was trying the new hub rack. Rack looks
great without bags and seems like a great fit with the other Mark rack
trifecta. We both talked about what would be in store for the new bags. We
both jokingly figured that whatever bag Grant designs it would have some
quirky design. I said that maybe with the new bags you would have to clap
twice to open them or something. All in good fun.
