If they are truly friction shifting(meaning they can be moved hi-lo and
lo-hi in one continuous motion) they are "pure friction"* regardless of any
clicks/noises *they may make !

Re: [RBW] Re: Interesting Simple One mod into "touring/cx" bike

2015-12-28 Thread Eric Norris
I use Sturmey-Archer's S3X hub, which has a reasonably wide range, coupled with
a spin-on singlespeed freewheel to allow coasting. The top gear (3rd) is direct
drive (the most efficient on any IGH), and the bottom gear (1st) is about 60%
of top. With a 72-inch top gear, that puts the lowest gear at about 43 inches,
which is low enough for me for all but the steepest pitches.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sunrace 'one at a time'

2015-12-28 Thread Kainalu
The clicks are very close together, so you do settle in one click at a time in
one direction, but it's smooth friction in the other direction, same as the
cheapies I expect. As for adjusted riding styles, I think adjusted shifting
styles is more like it, and a mild adjustment at that.

[RBW] Rivendell Relaxed Rear Geometry & Actual Effect

>1. Is the relaxed rear geometry >something you can feel when compared to

>2. Do you see it as a positive??

Hello,

1. It is not noticeable as long as the saddle position can be obtained. It is
one ingredient in bike fit.

2. In my case, I like a fair bit of setback, and Brooks saddles, which require
additional setback as well. I visited the Alex Singer shop in 2011, and
Olivier, the proprietor, pointed to my machine's (72.5 degree) seat tube and
said, "That is too slack." The (plastic) saddle was centered in its adjustment
range, and I needed every bit of that extra 7mm (and a high-setback seatpost)
to use a Brooks Professional. My Alex Singer had been built with a 74deg seat
angle, and I did not ever really work out the position on it for long distance
riding.

Best Regards,

Will

[RBW] Re: Rapid Rise Rear Der

2015-12-28 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
I used a rapid rise derailer with friction shifters for several years on my
load carrier. I could never get the reverse motion to become intuitive.
This of course after decades of "normal" shifting. I finally, this fall,
replaced the rapid rise with a normal rear derailer. For now when I drop my
rear hand to the level, there is just a brief moment of indecision. But I
am sure I can be cured of my imperfect indoctrination given enough time on
the lever.

Re: [RBW] Re: Possible WTT 48cm Hunqapillar for AHH

2015-12-28 Thread David Stein
Shoji, that helps a lot hearing that the AHH is noticeably the 'faster'
bike. That is what I'm looking for, something that serves as an errand
bike, bike camping bike, and is faster than my hunq on road rides which
would be 70% of the rides on it.

The Jones plus is unbelievably fantastic, but I have it setup with 3"
treaded tires at 10 psi for technical trail riding. It is slower going up
hill than the Hunq, but much cushier and more comfortable of a ride on
technical trails than the Hunq which I desparately needed. It handles
surprisingly well. And I was just as fast on it as I was on a Trek Fuel 9.9
(top of the line) demo ride I did. Some people get a 2nd wheelset for this
with slick tires and higher psi for road riding and swear buy it, maybe I
will one day but since the front wheel needs a 135mm hub, it's not
something I can just go buy and Jones wheelbuilder price on their site has
it at $1K for a wheelset, maybe another time.

I like the description "Stately"; I think that sums it up nicely. I would not
describe it as lively, but it does not feel dead either. To me Its just the
sort of bike that does not wow you, it impesses in small subtle ways and it
endears itself to you slowly over time.
I have the Clementine which is essentially the same thing as the Clem., but I
rode the Clem demo in Walnut Creek in June & I would say the non-step through
frame is slightly more "lively".
I rode with a 20lb. front load in a Wald basket yesterday and it was real nice
with the load evenly distributed I was curious to see if I could ride with no
hands so I tried it and I could easily do it. I didn't really because I did not
want to take the chance of the load shifting suddenly & me landing on my head!

[RBW] Re: FS: Elephant NFE f/f/hs 700c 60cm, lowtrail, couplers

2015-12-28 Thread lukeheller
My custom 700c canti Elephant NFE with couplers is back up for sale.

I rode it for 2 years and successfully completed three 1200km grand
randonnees - most recently the well-known Paris-Brest-Paris in August of
2015.

It's got typical signs of use and that of being packed a few times in an
S case. After I got back from France, i stripped the frame and touched up
some of the nicks with a powdercoat touch-up spray paint with a matched
RAL# to prevent and potential for moisture getting underneath the powder.
Buyer can have the can of touch paint - there's plenty.

full disclosure - I had a silly fall right before PBP and had Brad Wilson
of Capricorn Bikes in Marshall, NC re-rake fork and check alignment of the
frame. Everything is in tip-top shape. He inspected for cracks and anything
concerning - all good.

Your choice of brakes - $50
TRP CX8.4 - on the bike now
Cane Creek SCX5 - near new condition

Seatpost binder included - just recently upgraded to a KCNC SC13, blue
(clamps frame AND post) - ti bolts

Headset included. I think I even have a spare NIB that I'll include for an
extra $35 if the buyer wants.

Frame takes a Bruce Gorden Rock n Road 700x43 with room to spare and is
equally suited for some skinny 28's.

If you want a full rando setup, we can talk dynamo lights and wheel
package. The wheels are fresh. Front wheel was rebuilt before PBP, rear
wheel built with DT Swiss350 right after PBP. Both on PL23 Pacenti rims

Now $1500 shipped.

[RBW] Re: What stem?

2015-12-28 Thread iamkeith
I should have added: Being able to swap back and forth between the two
bars, I'm leaning heavily toward the Bosco. The reason I have the
Albatross is that I've tried it on several bikes and just not found a place
where it works for me. It always feels too narrow. But on such a huge bike
as the 59 Clem, the issue is exaggerated even more. I DO understand the
desire to lower the Bosco though. In addition to getting a negative-rise
stem (which doesn't help in your case), I think I'm going to do the
"unthinkable," and cut the steerer tube down a bit. I will probably also
go with a longer (at least 130, probably 140) stem, which will help get
some more lean without having to cut length off the bar and thereby
preclude the third hand position. Food for thought...

[RBW] Re: Clementine: Weird tire tubes

2015-12-28 Thread Abcyclehank
Reid,
I agree that it is frustrating dealing with a presta valve without threads for
the first time. However like most other things it gets easier- do I wish all
still has threads yes does it save money for the manufacturer likely.
Sometimes progress for profit leads us backwards. I am on my "final" pump
ever, a Silca with a coupled head, which seems to handle every conceivable tube
imaginable. That was my solution to years of frustration with various tubes
and pumps.
Best of luck hope other than the tube issue your wife loves her Clementine.
Building my wife's up as well as I am 90% done with our move and the 1st Winter
Storm Warning is hitting West Michigan.

Sincerely,
Ryan

[RBW] Re: Clementine: Weird tire tubes

2015-12-28 Thread Jon Dukeman in the foothills of Colorado
That type stem is common on road tubes mostly with long stems . If using an
older pump with a worn fitting it might have trouble gripping the stem and
leaking while pumping.
If you prefer threaded just exchange them out with a tube with a threaded
stem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sunrace 'one at a time'

2015-12-28 Thread Robert Bolesta
I've got them set up like this too. I think Riv calls it the "inside"
position. I've been riding them for about 6 months now on bosco bars with
an 8spd cassette and triple crank and like em.

Only complaint is sometimes I wanna make a slight tweak to the rear
derailleur position as I'm riding, and in order to do so I have to make a
"full click" which sometimes turns out to be enough to unintentionally
shift to the next cog. This would probably make them a no-go for a lot of
folks, but I have learned when to expect this issue and adjusted my riding
to avoid it. So not a big deal for me. Plus they are fun to use, so I'm all
for them.

[RBW] Re: Clementine: Weird tire tubes

2015-12-28 Thread Ron Mc
I use latex tubes in 3/5 bikes, and they have slick valve stems. I push
them to the side to put on a pump head, but again, because of the way a
Hirame pump head works, it goes on with no friction.

[RBW] Rivendell Relaxed Rear Geometry & Actual Effect

2015-12-28 Thread Marc40a
I compensate for the slackened STA of my Hillborne with a zero setback
seatpost.

Your figures correlate with mine Approx 6mm difference for each half degree
of setback, if I remember correctly.

As to whether the relaxed geometry is a positive or a negative, I don't think
of it that way . Maybe I would if I couldn't position myself where I needed to
be on the bike (assuming I had the correct frame size). I look at the bike's
design as a whole because changing one aspect of the geometry would undoubtedly
affect others. The bottom line for me is that my bike feels amazing and I have
the fit really dialed in.

[RBW] What stem?

2015-12-28 Thread Tim Wood
Thanks everyone for the input. I sent a PM to Keith requesting comparison
photos of the albas and Boscos on the Clem but maybe others would want to see
them, Keith up to you if you want to post them here.

A lot of my desire to do a bar switch is fit related, but some of it has to do
with aesthetics as I don't love the bull moose. I like the look of a level
quill stem versus the positive angle and triangular set up of the bull moose.

I think a tallux stem with an Alba bar would give me the drop and lean I am
looking for, taking in to account the -40mm difference between bars only, and
the further difference between the stem angle of the two styles.

I never really considered the width of the Alba to be a deal breaker, or
concern, and this is the first time I'm hearing about that being an issue. All
other reviews and comments I read about the bars is that people love them and
often never look back once installed. The width of the boscos is pretty extreme
and I can't see wanting to go any wider. As it stands you have to be pretty
focused riding through traffic and on narrow bridge decks or passing others on
paths. I would be happy with a reduction in width.

Sounds like I've made my decision! Sometimes writing out your thoughts is all
you need to do. Thanks for being the sounding board!

Pudge,
It is the slightly darker Frechish blue w/ cream accents. I have parts to
build several complete Rivendell bikes for family members (wife, adult children
and their future spouses) now that my fleet is complete. So the frame only
option is my best avenue; however I think the current deals on complete bikes
being offered by Grant and company is a great direction to take RBW. Although
with a 99.5cm PBH everything currently offered is undersized for me however
because my means has increased now my children have graduated college and both

Custom Mystery Model or Giant Multi-purpose Mixte.
I might be touching base with you about my new workshop and advise about some
of those sweet, wood rim wheels you build.

Riv shows on the video you put the left on the right and the right on left?
This is kind of confusing since Riv refers to them as right one at a time
and left one at a time thumb shifters.

Yes. If you want to mount on the inside:
You buy the left and mount it on the right and you buy the right and mount
it on the left.

FWIW: if you want the same type on left and right, just buy from Rivbike.

Rapid Rise was doomed before it even started ! If it was such a great
idea then why didn't they make all shifting that way, mtb and road ? ...
___ . exactly . Saying it was good for some and not the other
right there doomed it. A solution to problem that didn't exist.

[RBW] Rapid Rise Rear Der

2015-12-28 Thread Utah
I just visited the Riv HQ and test rode a few of the bikes. The guys in
the store (Vince and Will) were awesome and patient with my excitement for
my pilgrimage to Mecca!

My question: All of the bikes were Rapid Rise (backward in the rear, hmm
bassackward?). Is there a reason why? I also bought my wife a used Betty
Foy with a rapid rise rear Der and I am currently not planning on changing
it. But she is going to be in for a rude awakening if she ever steps off
her Riv and rides one of her friends bikes or one of my non-Riv bikes. She
had Paul thumbies on her last bike.

Still excited!

Interesting approach. I put a 3-speed IGH (with stem shifter) on my
Quickbeam and did a short self-supported tour with it back in May. There
were a few places where lower gears would have been ideal, but overall I
enjoyed the QB in touring mode.

Re: [RBW] Re: Interesting Simple One mod into "touring/cx" bike

2015-12-28 Thread Eric Norris
I've done a lot of riding on 3-speed equipped bikes, including my venerable
(first gen) Quickbeam, which I converted from a fixed gear several years ago.
Only very seldom have I had to resort to the 24-inch gear (two feet).

Remember that, back in the day, bikes with 3-speed IGHs were much more common,
and were used for the same type of riding that we now do with 21-speed
bicycles. There's much to said for the simplicity of a 3-speed bike.

[RBW] Re: What stem?

2015-12-28 Thread Garth

Think twice iamkeith ! The Bosco is-by-design much higher than any bar
intended for such bicycles, so to cut a stem just for that one type of bar
that is atypical may not be a great idea. You can often find used 56cm
Alba's FS in this group. they are more than just one cm. wide at the ends,
the flare around the front is more round , and the angle which they go back
is slightly less(appears more straight) than the 55cm ones. I have both and
one on top of the other it very obvious. Or the Albastache even @55.5cm
is more like the 56 Alba minus the extra length back.

But hey, it's your darn bike ! So take all this with a poof of wind :)

[RBW] Rapid Rise Rear Der

2015-12-28 Thread Joe Bernard
Grant was heavy into the concept of both shifters moving the same direction for
easier/harder gears, despite its "rapid" demise in the marketplace. They came
about as Shimano was introducing something on MTBs called Dual Control, which
was a brake lever you nudged up or down for shifts..they didn't want the
shifters to have opposite actions for the same move. I don't know what happened
to the shifters, but RapidRise derailers are long gone from that market. I
suspect Riv now owns all of them ;)

Much to be said about the inadequate low gear offered by a 25% reduction

too. Some of the 4 speed Sturmeys offered a much better selection of
gears, in my opinion.

It's making me appreciate bar ends and Noodles. Nobody talks about which
side and which orientation those should have.
The one bike we have in the house with albatross-like bars (soma oxford)
also has bar end shifters, not thumb mount.

I will stick to obsessing about gear ratios, you guys can talk about your
thumbies all you like, but it's not for me. Or at least, at 45 it's not
for me yet ;)

Re: [RBW] Christmas Clementine

2015-12-28 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Been meaning to ask, the Clementine is the first bike I have owned with the
seat stay bridge having no brake or fender hole, but rather a hole that
faces the ground. I assume I get the other two attachment points lined up,
then drill a hole through the fender, and use a bolt with a flat head for
the inside of the fender and whatever spacer required. Though I guess this
way is more secure, ti seems less than ideal, and I almost would prefer the
little clamp on bracket that I use on my other fendered bicycles.

Re: [RBW] Re: Possible WTT 48cm Hunqapillar for AHH

2015-12-28 Thread Clayton.sf
Get some compass tires for your hunq- it will be much faster. If you want
really fast, look into skinny flexy tubing or some vintage 531 and compass
tires. The AHH likely won't be that huge of an upgrade.

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Tallux Stem

2015-12-28 Thread Tim Wood
"Habitual cockpit modifications require crafty part acquisition" - Said me,
today.

I've secured a new albatross bar to replace the Bosco on my Clem and now I need
a stem. I had a shopping basket all ready to go on riv with a stem and a couple
other goodies but I'd thought I'd check with my fellow
part-hoarding-cockpit-modifiers to see what's out there.

What I need:

-Nitto stem, 110 or 120, preferably tallux, but it has to be the brushed, dull
brite finish, not shiny Chrome.

Thanks,

Tim

[RBW] Re: Christmas Clementine

2015-12-28 Thread Lungimsam
Best looking Clementine shots I have seen so far.

Normally, to my eyes, the shots on the RBW website make the Clementine
model look pedestrian, like every curved tube framed hybrid/comfort bike
you see in any corner shop.

But these pics really show the high dollar Rivendell quality of the frame
model and the parts hung on it, which I knew they had to be, but just was
wondering why I never could see it in RBW pics.

Nice touch on the big ring. I like those cool looking special rings.

[RBW] Re: Rapid Rise Rear Der

2015-12-28 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
It is a *logical* idea.

Imagine if we didn't have the legacy baggage of pulling cable to downshift
in the back. Wouldn't it make more sense if both front and rear derailleurs
did the same (upshift or downshift) if a particular action was actuated
(such as pull or release cable)? With rapid-rise (or Low normal), Shimano
was just harmonizing front and rear derailleur actions so pulling cable
(with DT, thumbs, barends & STI) will all result in upshifts. Sounds pretty
logical to me and it should be easier to teach newbies too.

I also seem to recall that one of the technical reasons for rapid-rise was
to improve rear shifting. Apparently, the downshift-facilitating ramps on
the HG cassettes work better when the chain is gently prodded by a spring,
rather than getting ham-fisted with an overly eager rider.

In any case, it's not a particularly hard skill to switch to. No shifts are
truly critical for non-pros, so a mis-shift here or there isn't bad. One
can always harmonize all Shimano-equipped bikes with rapid-rise rear
derailleurs! :)

Anyone remember the reverse shifting Sachs *front* derailleur?
