[RBW] How to Determine the "Correct" Tire Pressure?

2016-03-09 Thread Jan Heine
One of the most common questions I get asked is what tire pressure is best
for performance and comfort. After years of studying tire performance, the
amazing answer is that tire pressure doesn't matter much... I wrote a piece
on why that is the case, and what it means for every rider as they set up
their bikes:

https://janheine.wordpress.com/2016/03/09/tire-pressure-take-home/

Enjoy!

[RBW] Re: Comments on Compass Crankset on an A. Homer Hilsen?

2016-03-09 Thread stonehog
I have the Compass cranks on two bikes - a Hilsen and a Toussaint. Love
them. They are quite tight on the Q-factor, so if you are used to triple
MTB cranks, these will feel narrow. I believe I have a 107mm bottom
bracket on the Hilsen. The Toussaint has a 113mm. As I use flats now
exclusively, I am less sensitive to the narrow Q on these, but when I was
using Frogs, I added a few washers to push them out a bit.

The quality is as promised. I have very little wear on the rings after
several thousand miles on both bikes. They are quite beautiful, as well,
so if you are concerned with aesthetics, this is your crank :) Let me know
if you have any other questions.

I have a few writeups with pics here:

It looks to me as though the nose piece is at the wrong angle, probably

well worn and abused Brooks saddles, but never any like that. I agree with

[RBW] Re: Anybody switched from 58 to 62 Hunq?

2016-03-09 Thread Daniel Jackson
The short of it is: the 58 is working very well.

My body is a bit odd, I believe. I'm 6'3" with a 905 mm PBH. Shorter than
average legs attached to a longer than average torso (or maybe my neck is
just long). Initially, I thought this would mean that the top tube would
fall short and I'd desperately hope for extra reach. But this has not been
the case with the setup that I prefer: albastache bars on an 8 cm dirt
drop; bars just below saddle height. I think this has to mean that my neck
is long...

My recommendation for those on the cusp between sizes that want to buy new
now or used: if you're running drops or an alternative bar with a bit more
reach like the albastache, go with the 58; if you're running albatross,
chocos, boscos, etc., go with the 62.

But my real recommendation is: wait a couple more months for the new Hunq
to come out. Rumor has it there will be a size 60 in the lineup with even
greater tire clearances than the current iteration.

Hope this helps someone out there.

Best,
D.

Re: [RBW] Pass & Stow Porteur Rack Experiences.

2016-03-09 Thread René Sterental
I used my P rack on both my Hunqapillar and my Atlantis and mounted via
the internal cable route an Edelux I headlight. It worked very well, and I
used it mostly with a basket for the Sackville ShopSacks. It is one of the
first steel (not black) racks they started doing and its held up very well.

Since I've now settled on the Campee front/rear racks for the Atlantis
which I like better, I'm going to sell my P rack and for now, keeping the
Edelux light installed in it.

I will be traveling on Saturday for two weeks, so the formal post will come
later, but if anyone is interested, please let me know off-list. Asking
$300 + shipping for the combo OBO.

Re: [RBW] 53cm Roadeo for sale. Orange color

2016-03-09 Thread Patrick Moore
I'll be very interested to hear your riding impressions of the Legolas
compared to the Roadeo. I've owned a Ram and wanted a Roadeo, but I've
heard that the Roadeo is pretty darn close to feel and handling of the Ram,
but that the Legolas is the lightest and most "racy" bike of the lot.

I'd be interested in learning how its tubes compare with those of Ram and
Roadeo, and even more important, how it handles compared to the other 2.

[RBW] Re: Comments on Compass Crankset on an A. Homer Hilsen?

2016-03-09 Thread ted
I am using a Compass/RH crankset with 30/46 rings on my AHH. The bottom
bracket is a 108mm from White Industries.
Clearance between the small ring and the right chain stay is minimal but
seems to be sufficient. I think the chainline I have is less than
"standard", but I prefer having the big ring as close to the middle of the
cassette as possible.
Overall I am very pleased with the RH cranks. They have changed production
to use a stronger alloy, and now offer 3 lengths (165, 171, and 177). I
think they have also refined the crank bolts slightly (flat vs domed) since
I bought my cranks.

Haha. LITERALLY! :-)

Anyway...I went by HQ again today, since I had overlooked a good fender
solution. I bought myself a set of B65 fenders, plus an extra stay-kit to
do some additional fender work on other bikes, and a King Cage. While I
was there I saw several finished Appaloosas, waiting to be picked up.
Several people should be having some fun.

[RBW] 53cm Roadeo for sale. Orange color

2016-03-09 Thread RJM
Well, the wife said I can't get another bike without selling one and I want
a Legolas bad, so to get the money and the permission for one I'm selling
my lovely, beloved Roadeo. Here are the specs:

53cm Roadeo - Custom Orange color with cream headtube. (gorgeous, it really
is. Made by Waterford)
Quill stem with a 9cm Nitto lugged stem

black Chris King headset

Mark's bars 44cm (I think. these were one step up from the narrowest bars
Riv sold. I don't see the Mark's bars on their site anymore, but they are
kind of a classic bar shape but made light with fantastic Nitto aluminum).

Full Shimano Ultegra 6800 drivetrain.
cranks are 50/34 and 172.5
cassette is Ultegra 6800 11x28 which works well for me in the steepish
rolling hills I encounter.
bottom bracket is 6800

brakes are Tektro R539. The normal brake Riv specs with Roadeo builds.

Seatpost is Nitto S83. Saddles and pedals are so personal so I'll sell the
full build without them.

Wheels are Rolf Vigor RS wheels. Surprisingly stiff for low spoke count
wheels and they are lightweight.

Now, I know that this is not the preferred build many here would like and I
can use the parts on another bike, so *I can sell the frame by itself if
you prefer that*. Frame, fork, Chris King headset for $1300.00 shipped to
you. Full bike say $2600.00 shipped. That's better than half off on a new
one.

The bike is in excellent shape...never crashed and I keep it in the living
room, so it doesn't really ever get wet unless I'm riding on it. The frame
is only two years old and the only real blemish I can see, with the
exception of some paint chipping at the dropouts where the wheel goes in,
is a paint chip on the top tube. I put that in there when I originally
built the bike (slipped with a wrench. It turned out to be a good thing
because after that first paint chip I find I don't freak out and baby a
bike too much). It just chipped the paint a little and isn't through the
primer and hasn't rusted or anything.

I'm currently at work and can't get pictures into Flick'r to save, but when
I get home I will shoot some and put the link up here, and I will take a
closeup of the paint chip. I have one picture that I will link to from my
original build that I have. The bike is slightly different now with 25cm
Continental 4000gp tires and the bar tape is cloth taped that is twined and
shellacked a nice light brownish color.

Any questions you can email me through here or just respond and I will
check it asap. Thanks.

I've seen that bike in person and Sean's price is about half of what's
fair. If this was my size it would have been over with a long time ago.
If there's somebody out there that wants the frameset only, let me know

Neat bike. The carbon fiber bar ends as "aero bars" kinda cracked me up
(because they're CF) but I bet they feel nice in the hand ;^) Does that
blue one have wood rims? If yes, how are they? I have a custom front disc
fixie that I have idly considered doing wood rims on...

Re: [RBW] Pass & Stow Porteur Rack Experiences.

2016-03-09 Thread Doug Van Cleve
Yes, I had to send out my fork and front fender when I had my custom SS
porteur rack made years ago. And if you anticipate changing bikes, the P
can adapt to the new one as well. And if you find a porteur rack isn't for
you, a P will retain more of its value than a custom rack, although a
custom for a relatively common bike would probably also be pretty easy to
sell...

Doug

P.S. Not that it matters in this instance, but the CETMA Half Rack is also
pannier compatible...

Re: [RBW] Pass & Stow Porteur Rack Experiences.

2016-03-09 Thread Doug Van Cleve
Probably true, my wording wasn't as precise as it should have been. A
custom rack that is all welded/brazed will be stronger and lighter than
anything similar that bolts together, assuming similar materials. I was
just throwing out the CETMA and Wald as non-custom options that don't cost
as much as custom rack...

Re: [RBW] Pass & Stow Porteur Rack Experiences.

2016-03-09 Thread David Banzer
I considered going custom, pricepoint would've been similar for a porteur
rack with rails for panniers. The downside would be I'd need to send the
builder my fork, then I'd be out my daily rider for a while. The P rack's
ability to fit other bikes is a plus for me. If I ever get an itch to set
up my Clem differently, the rack will easily fit a couple other bikes I
have. If I'd gone custom, the rack most likely wouldn't fit another bike.
The goal was to have a porteur rack platform with front panniers. Price
wise, Nitto 32f & Hub Area Rack would be more expensive and I wouldn't have
the large platform.

Re: [RBW] Pass & Stow Porteur Rack Experiences.

2016-03-09 Thread Doug Van Cleve
Late to the party, but I will share a couple thoughts. By all accounts the
P rack is nice, but it is also as expensive as a custom porteur rack and
the more adaptable a rack is, generally the more flexible and heavier it
will be. Depending on your goal and price point, there are a couple CETMA
racks that are similar function and cheaper, if more crude (
http://cetmacargo.com/pages/cetma-racks-info), and Wald has a giant
rack-sket now (
http://www.waldsports.com/index.cfm/store/front-baskets/257-ewalde28099s-multi-fit-front-rack/)
that is way cheaper than anything similar.

Hey Mark,

By the looks of the pictures you've shared I'd say it looks defective to my

leather at the nose has slipped to one side. I don't notice it or feel any

Re: [RBW] P Porteur rack

That is a very intriguing bike! -- very military looking, in a way, but in
a *good* way. Did you have the parts custom painted black?

And what is the single ring crank? For that matter, what is the rear multi
gear hub -- Alfine? How do you find it off road?

Lastly, I like the look of the two tool rolls or cylindrical bags on the
front rack -- what are they?

I have to say that I don't like double top tubes, but I'd jump at a
Bombadil like that if it were offered me. (Wonder if C Matthews could put
disk tabs on a Bombadil ...)

Matt, Mr. P, also has a new 3-Rail front rack (about half the width of

I ordered a 3-Rail rack for myself a few days ago.

I've used my P porteur on my Hunq. Very nice, very strong, very useful by

[RBW] Re: Comments on Compass Crankset on an A. Homer Hilsen?

2016-03-09 Thread Brian Campbell
I got a set from Electra's website when they were on a sale a couple of
years back. I checked today and they do not seem to have them for sale any
longer. I also got a set on ebay. The rings that come standard with the
cranks were not very useful to me. I re-sold the unused chain rings on
ebay. IIRC, I paid $75 for a NIB set from Electra and $60 for NIB set on
ebay..

Re: [RBW] Re: Curious Brooks damage

Nope, not that I know of.

Check out these photos. They are from when I first bought the saddle, one
year after (bright colour striped photo), and then one year more (present
day).

You can see it's been a slow progressive thing. First starting out as some
lighter spots, then turned tan (I thought it was just the dye wearing a bit
quicker there), then starting to split. To my eye, the profile of the
saddle never changed. Never sagged. Never got water logged and wasn't
physically scraped or damaged.

Re: [RBW] Pass & Stow Porteur Rack Experiences.

2016-03-09 Thread David Banzer
Thanks for all that replied. My Clem has cantilever brakes (built it up
from a frameset) so there shouldn't be any interference mounting to center
hole. Looks like I could use the mounting slots to use a couple struts and
utilize the top fork mounts. I'll try the rack mount as it is first of
course.
I'll be making my own bags, panniers and a low profile porteur bag of some
sort. I'll have time to figure that out. I also added a rear Tubus Vega
rack, so Clem will be able to haul quite a bit once the front rack arrives.

[RBW] Re: Curious Brooks damage

2016-03-09 Thread David Banzer
The side pic shows it better. Looks worse than the first photo. While it's
not sagging, there is a shift in the direction of the leather, and that
area is starting to wear through. The leather at the nose is angling up,
while after the nose piece, it becomes horizontal. The leather looks worn
and dried out in that area. Is there wear on the underside?
What I would do is de-tension the saddle completely, move the nose piece
around where it clamps to the rails. It can get stuck in a position, which
would start deforming the leather. Give the leather a solid treatment on
the underside, then on the raw exposed leather on the top. Then re-tension,
while trying to keep the nose piece as horizontal as possible.

Re: [RBW] Pass & Stow Porteur Rack Experiences.

2016-03-09 Thread Dan McNamara
HI David. I have a Pass & Stow on my Cheviot. I have used it with a Freight
Porteur bag, front panniers, a Wald basket and combos of those. Keeping the
load low helps with wheel flop. If I fill up the Porteur bag the front gets a
mind of its own.

The internal path for dyno wiring keeps things pretty tidy.

My only issue was clearing the side pull brake up front - you might want to
check the clearance for the straddle wire on the v-brakes. You could probably
flip the mounting plate for the fork crown attachment upside down to improve
the situation but he is happy to work on custom solutions for mounting.

Let me know is you want more info / pics.

[RBW] Re: Pass & Stow Porteur Rack Experiences.

2016-03-09 Thread Brad
You might want to check out the Haulin Colin rack also. The price is
similar to the Pass & Stow, but it uses the mid-fork braze-ons. I have one
on my Soma GR and I'm planning on adding a lowrider rack for touring this
summer.

But the Pass & Stow is pretty slick (I didn't realize it had the internal
routing for lighting wires) and would give you lots of options carrying
stuff.

I also use a Nitto 32F with a basket on my Quickbeam and it works really
well.

Now that I've finished typing this, I realize that I'm not helping at all.
Maybe just buy one of each!

[RBW] P Porteur rack

2016-03-09 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J. (Retired Partner)
Tom Allingham shared the album Rivendell Bombadil with you from the Flickr app!
Check it out:
https://flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/sets/72157624552118742

This album shows the P rack in several configurations. I've also hung
Berthoud mini panniers and Acorn tool rolls on the pannier rails, which it also
handled with aplomb.

[RBW] Re: Curious Brooks damage

2016-03-09 Thread Mark Reimer

Yeah, very true. I guess I'm just a bit confused because when you look at
it from the side, it doesn't really have much sag at all. Particularly
compared to my other brooks and others I've seen. I know the special is a
more supple leather, perhaps it's more delicate?

[RBW] Re: Curious Brooks damage

2016-03-09 Thread David Banzer
No experience with that type of wear, but the worn area looks like it lines
up with the edge of the nose-piece. Does the leather change shape in this
area as well? Maybe a side pic would help. I know when I ride in the
winter, my saddle feels not as comfortable as in warmer temps. 'Brittle'
isn't an accurate term, but it's the best I can think of. So, maybe weather
related?
IMO, tensioning a saddle doesn't necessarily wear it out faster if it's
done only when needed and doesn't tighten the leather back to its original
hardness.
Definitely add some leather treatment on the top spots. Check the underside
for wear. Maybe it's a good time to give the underside a full treatment as
well.

Re: [RBW] Pass & Stow Porteur Rack Experiences.

2016-03-09 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J. (Retired Partner)
I have a P rack on my Bombadil. Extremely versatile -- I've had a large Wald
basket on it, and I've also ridden the bike with small Berthoud panniers on it
(paired with medium Berthoud panniers on the rear, with tent, sleeping bag and
pad spread over the rack platforms. Rode well in all configurations. Pics of
various iterations are on my Flickr stream.

You didn't ask this question specifically, but I'll answer it anyway: the P
rack is beautifully made and well thought out. It has light mounts, and
provides for internal routing of wiring. Very solid and flexible mounting
system. I love it.

What I'd really like is front panniers, with the option of a light, bulky items

I had the cateye reflex auto light and it would not come on as early as i would
have liked in overcast weather.

The manual version works great though.

Both can be seen from the side, too.

I hopefully will get around to wiring up my spanninga rear light one day. That
way it will just run all the time when riding. Lately ive been running my
edeluxe ii with switch on all the time. Fun to hop on and ride and never have
to switch anyhing on and just know they are always on.

[RBW] Re: Pass & Stow Porteur Rack Experiences.

2016-03-09 Thread Zed Martinez
Not a direct answer to the Pass & Stow specifically, but I use the Surly
Nice Rack on the front of my Clem with a couple front panniers and an Acorn
rando bag resting on top. I'm trying like one of Grant's bikes and just
living with all those on the bike. It seems to handle weight in the
panniers fine. I haven't had an excuse to haul a folding end table on it
yet like I did on the predecessor, so, I don't know how it handles weird
weight higher on the platform, but it did fine on a beer run with a six
pack in each pannier last night, at any rate. So long as I keep the weight
split evenly it seems to ride fine.

This does not answer the question directly but I use a less expensive
alternative: Electra Ticino (made by FSA) w/ Velo Orange 46/30 rings. On my
AHH, I am using a 110mm bottom bracket. I don't know how the Compass cranks
are shaped but the Electra allow you to use almost any front derailleur, as
the arms are shaped and do not interfere with the front derailleur.

I did the PA Rando 200k back in October (lots of hills) and the combo with
a 10 speed rear (11-32), Dura Ace downtube shifters and everything was fine.
