[RBW] XT front derailleur with Sugino XD2 triple on a Hunqapillar?

2016-12-28 Thread Jack Doran
I haven't had any luck getting rid of chain rub against the front
derailleur plate of a Deore XT front derailleur on my Hunqapillar (Dura Ace
shifters). I have a 108 Phil Wood hub and the granny ring is pretty close
to the chain stay as it is, and I can't get it much closer. Seems like an
XT would have enough throw to be up to the task, but I've tried getting the
cable tension as high as possible by pulling hard on the cable down at the
anchor bolt and tightening the barrel adjustors at the shifters. No luck.
Any troubleshooting steps I might try?

Same here. My 68cm Orange *barely* fits a 700x35 in back without a fender.
YMMV.

[RBW] Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-28 Thread Kieran J
I will add that the most extreme (and yet possibly most logical) option would
be to commission a new low-ish trail fork from Tom Matchak or another builder,
and powder the whole shootin' match.

I'm wanting to reserve that as a last and most sensible/costly resort.

[RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-28 Thread GAJett
I am mostly familiar with the MUPs of the East Bay Regional Park District
in the SF Bay Area. I almost always use my bell when approaching from the
rear, and from the front if other users don't seem to be paying attention.
I ring several times as I approach (e.g., ding-ding ding, ding-ding-ding,
ding-ding-ding) before passing as far away as possible. And I always say
thank-you to those who move over, often getting a thanks in return. If
anyone is nasty, they still get the thank-you

Several rules for EBRPD trails that are relevant to this thread include:

*All Trail Users:*

For everyone's safety, *keep to the right* (so no real reason to call out
"on your left").

For your safety, headphones are not advised (but not prohibited -- this has
consequences).

*Bicycles: *

Bicycles shall not be ridden at an unsafe speed, or greater than the posted
speed limit. (The speed limit is usually 15 mph. However even a walking
pace could be considered an "unsafe speed" and a cyclist held responsible
for an accident even if proceeding with the utmost caution. As a corollary
these trails are NOT for high speed training. If you want to go faster
then at least slow down when passing others, or find another venue.)

Bells are required on bicycles on Park District trails. (I've known
several people who have gotten tickets for not having bells!)

- Bicycles always yield to pedestrians. Before passing, SLOW DOWN, ring
bell and establish verbal contact. (Yes, slow down. MUPs are for all
users. No one should use them in any way that endangers others. But how
do you establish verbal contact with the idiot on, for example, an
i(diot)Phone with the volume turned up?

*Pedestrians: *

- Keep to the right when approached by others. (Again, stay to the right
unless passing.)
- Look behind and to both sides before changing course. (As mentioned
elsewhere, runners are particularly bad about this. I had one at the back
of a large group literally turn on their toe to reverse direction. I had
slowed to a walking pace while waiting a chance to pass the group, so was
able to stop.

Cheers.

8/5/8 OS (which is what the Rambouillet has) is, if I recall correctly,
about as stiff as 531 Tourist grade, 10/7/10 std diameter, as was used
in the Jack Taylor Tourist, one of the most capable loaded touring bikes

Re: [RBW] Re: Silent bell until needed/Using a bell

2016-12-28 Thread GAJett
My excitement was with a dog not off-leash. Instead the dog was on one of
those leashes on a reel that allow them to be 10 or 12 feet away from the
owner. Came around a nearly blind corner (having slowed anyway out of
caution) and there was the dog on one side of the trail, the owner on the
other, and the leash tight between. Got stopped OK, then the owner yelled
at the "dumb" dog. (Hint: It's not the dog that's dumb.) Owner never said
a word to me. Could have been really ugly if I was going faster.
Cheers.

The greenways here are a treasure. I can ride 50 mi on them and most of it
feels totally remote. There's a little more pedestrian traffic around park
trailheads and especially dog parks, but pick your times right and you can
go miles and miles without seeing anybody.
I have two 32 mi routes picked out that I can haul bike into work then go
for a ride.

I like the Crane Karen (Rivendell's bell 12?) with the stronger spring that
Rivendell sells.
The springs have a finite life if you ride MUP/greenways, and you need to

[RBW] Re: Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-28 Thread John Hawrylak
The majority of weight on a *low rider* is carried by the attachment to the
front dropout eyelet. The mid fork attachment stabilizers the rack, levels
it, but does not carry much load.

Therefore, the fork tubing is not carrying much weight. A Marks Rack would
be entirely different, as already pointed out.

Re: [RBW] Rivendell and Peter White Shoutouts for Exceptional Customer Service

2016-12-28 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Patrick is oh, so, right about both. I had a Luxus U go bad in 2015 while I was
in Connecticut. I was training for PBP and had a 400K brevet that weekend. It
was my only chance to ride one because of the rotator cuff surgery that spring.
I called Peter, overnighted it to him and he put a new one in the mail before
mine arrived to him. I had the new light on in no time and got my brevet in.
The light was covered under warranty as well. Oh, and I actually bought my
Hilsen from Peter in 2011. He happened to have one in stock when Riv didn't,
and I wasn't patient enough to wait for my first Riv. The folks at Riv are the
best also. Dave, Will, Brian, Keven (gone now), Rich and Grant have all helped
me immensely. And, Patrick, I'll bet I can ask a dumber question than you :)

One other thing. On my 2014 400k brevet with New England Randonneurs Peter
hosted a control. It was maybe a little past the halfway point. I remember the
sun was still up when we got there but it was dark when we left. The food was
great and the company was even better. Thanks so much for that, Peter!

Re: [RBW] Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-28 Thread Jon Dukeman,central Colorado

FUNNY STORY...
A friend and I were riding a trail and we came upon a sharp, blind curve.
When we got halfway around the turn there were two guys jogging in single
file.
I couldn't react quick enough to ring the bell so just as we were almost
side by side I yelled "on your left, sorry". I felt bad but what else could
we do?
They were obviously a bit erked at us.
One guy yelled back at us a couple of times"on your right".
That's the first time that has happened.

[RBW] Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-28 Thread Kieran J
Hi All,

Hope everyone is having a nice holiday season!

I'm curious about how the Rambouillet handles with different configs of a
front load. I've only ever really used a small Swift Bandito up on the
handlebar, but never anything more substantial.

Have any Ram owners ever:

   - somehow run low-rider panniers on the stock fork?
   - run low-rider panniers and an additional front bag on the stock fork?
   - had success with an aftermarket fork with a different trail figure?

Long story, I'm thinking of having a couple mods done to my Ram and new
powder done (the Creamsicle is cool, but doesn't match anything -
especially not all the red clothing I have). I would consider adding
mid-fork eyelets if running front low-riders appears to work well for the
bike.

Thanks!

Kieran

2016-12-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
Providing consistently exceptional customer service is a challenging and
amazing thing to accomplish and I just wanted to shout out to Rivendell and
Grant as well as Peter White for their care of me as a customer.

Prompted by the light discussion in a different thread, I remembered I was
wanting to get a Xion IQ light with AA batteries since mine wasn’t replaceable.
Calling and talking with Penny and asking my usual pesky questions, she said
“We’ll, let me look up your light.” She found my order from almost two years
ago, and informed me that I already have what I want and educated my moronity
ever so patiently. That is amazing service.

Rivendell’s service is simply always amazing. They put up with my pesky
questions and are fast and prompt with shipping and in general never have a
customer service issue, but when they pop up they take excellent care of me.

Two cycling companies that put the personal care touch in long distance
internet shopping in an amazing way. Thanks!

With abandon,

Re: [RBW] IQ-X Headlight

2016-12-28 Thread William deRosset
The lens/reflector cover is plastic. If it is like the Cyo lenses, it will
survive winter fine. It will eventually get scratched and yellow from
environmental exposure. However, a headlight restoration kit from the auto
parts store will fix it right up, based on my experience with the Ixon and Cyo
reflector covers. In the case of the Cyo, the cover generally outlasted the
plastic mounting ear for the light. The IQ-X has a metal mounting bracket,
which solves the only substantive problem I had with the Cyo N.

My long-awaited Kelpie will use the IQ-X headlamp as part of the integrated
lighting system (along with a Sinewave/Velo-lumino switch and power supply).

Re: [RBW] Re: Silent bell until needed

2016-12-28 Thread Patrick Moore
I've got several of the lever-arm "Crane" or "Universal"-type bells; 2 of
55 mm diameter and one of 45 mm. All brass. The larger ones are nice and
loud and work fine on the paved and well-used bike path; but I the smaller
one is much softer in sound, and I chose that one for the Matthews which is
ridden as much as possible on our dirt roads and paths - the softer sound
is more fitting for the bucolic ambience, where the larger ones jarred the
sensibilities. I can always yell if I need more sound.

BTW, the larger ones can be modulated by the distance the striker is drawn
back. My escalation is: bell lightly; bell louder; bell louder and
repeated; "Cyclist!"; then "Heads UP!!!" It seems to work, though I do
admit once to taking a shudderingly blissful delight in scaring the shit
out of some clueless pedestrians, who had ignored my carefully calibrated
warning escalations, with a !Zounds! air horn.

I've flicked the Spurcycle in stores, and don't find them louder than my 55
mm Cranes/Unversals, or sweeter than my 45 mm one.

Maybe the issue I never solved was attaching an actual Pleitscher-branded
kickstand in the bottom up manner as I think the Greenfield Retro uses
different bolt size. As I recall Pleitscher is a better quality stand even
though both brands "look" the same.

[RBW] Re: girlfriend bike / crazy kickstand install

2016-12-28 Thread S. Greco
I had considered threading the top plate and bolting up from the bottom.
The distance between the bottom bracket and the chain stay bridge was
already tight - going up a size or two in order to get threads in the top
would have been impossible. The bolt size needed wouldn't have fit between
bottom bracket chain stay bridge. Still, i feel its silly that they don't
all thread in this way, as its always easier to flip the bike over and have
total access to the hardware then to try to come in at an angle and avoid
marring the seat tube paint.

I did indeed mean chain stay bridge for the captive flathead bolt - no
holes in the chain stays i promise :)

The captive bolt means that you don't have to take the kickstand off if you
have to mess around with the fender.

I have nothing against cottered cranks, in fact I generally enjoy the
classic appearance of them, this particular set has a little bit of play in
the arms though which manifests as a bit of wobble in the pedal stroke.

2016-12-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
I'm not using one, but increasingly find more people on the trails (an
excellent and yet selfishly disappointing thing. Sardonic grin.) and so see
the need for it increasing. I have every confidence that I am far more
sensitive to "hum" than anyone else on the planet.

With abandon,

Yep, sorry, that picture I clipped from Greenfield isn't the best.
The bolt is narrow and goes up via the bottom and threads into the new top
plate. Its oddly shaped to allow FD cables to pass in the tight areas.

[RBW] Re: girlfriend bike / crazy kickstand install

2016-12-28 Thread eflayer
The retro kit enable better fitting of the top bracket but the bolt hole
and bolt head are still in the same position. That position often brings
the bolt head really close to the seat tube. Why not thread the top bracket
and bring the bolt in from the bottom side?

Re: [RBW] Re: Silent bell until needed/Using a bell

2016-12-28 Thread Eric Norris
+1 on the spring-mounted strikers making noise all the time. I have found that
bells with the "trigger" style strikers stay quiet (to my ears) until I use
them.

Regarding using bells and/or calling out on the bike trail ... I use a bell,
and over time I've reduced my bell-ringing to those cases where I think the
pedestrian/runner/cyclist ahead of me seems to be on the verge of doing
something dumb (e.g., veering into my path). If there's nobody coming from the
other direction and I have room to ride around the person(s) ahead of me, I
just ride around.

Bell-ringing, in my experience, is helpful about half the time. People hear the
bell and either walk/ride a little farther to the right or stop drifting to the
left.

The other half of the time, they either don't hear it or ignore it. I'm always
amazed at people who walk in groups, sometimes three across, taking up the
entire bike lane with the backs to bikes riding toward them in the same lane
... ignoring (on my local bike trail) the signs that tell them to walk *off*
the trail on the *left* side. I've given up trying to teach these people the
rules, opting instead to get around and away from them as quickly and safely as
possible and continue with my ride.

Anecdote from a ride a few days ago: I was riding behind another cyclist who I
didn't know. Ahead of us, a man was walking his dog off leash. The dog decided
to walk across the bike trail into our path, forcing us to brake quickly to
slow down. The guy ahead of me on the bike then decided that he needed to stop
altogether so that he could chastise the dog owner ... making an already bad
situation even worse. I had to veer to avoid running into him, the walker, and
the dog.

[RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-28 Thread John
I see all the problems everyone has listed every time I'm on a MUP, and the
only solution I've found to to slow way down and assume the person/people
are going to move directly in front of me no matter how many times I've
rung my bell and called out to them. People walking & talking are the worst
for me, as they have successfully tuned out everything but the sounds of
their own voices. I always prepare to pedal off into the weeds to avoid a
collision. It feels safer to avoid MUP's altogether and ride with cars on
the road.

It all reminds me of growing up in a place loved by tourists who didn't
care if their Winnebago was going to drive right over the kid on the
10-speed hugging the very edge of the asphalt on the road. I don't how many
times I was run off the road. My solution was to ride in bad weather, or at
night when the tourists were off the road & headlights forewarned of any
other traffic.

I've spent hours trying to "screw" with ill-fitting kickstands like this.
Doesn't it seem like Pleitscher and Greenfield could make a model where you
insert and tighten the bolt from under the BB instead of on top? Isn't
there always more clearance underneath? Am I missing something here in how
that would be tough to make happen?

2016-12-28 Thread Patrick Moore
It looks like a very practical ride; congratulations.

"...bury a flathead in the chainstay..." I suppose you meant "chainstay
bridge"?

Why not leave on the cottered cranks, unless you are trying to save weight?
Unless you object to the weight or unless you will be disassembling the bb
every year for maintenance, a decent cottered crankset/bb can be trouble
free for a long time, as I know from my various Raleigh Sprites and
Sportses. (Among cheap cranksets, only the Astabula is better!)

[RBW] Re: Silent bell until needed

2016-12-28 Thread ted
It's quite possible that you are more aware of this than I am, what are you
using that you find hums?
That said, I find that the hammer strike bells that RBW sells stay quiet
when not needed, and the spring mounted striker style (bell 26) that RBW
also sells brings incessantly for moderate combinations of rough terrain,
and firmer tire pressure.
I've also been very happy with a Crane E-ne bell thats much like the
Spurcycle.

[RBW] girlfriend bike / crazy kickstand install

2016-12-28 Thread S. Greco
My lovely girlfriend was finally ready to graduate from her Schwinn to
something a little nicer. She wasn't ready for a Riv despite my
recommendations. Her criteria was that it must be a step-through frame. My
criteria was that it must have a derailleur hanger - a proper one and not a
metal tab hanging off the drop out. This combination was surprisingly
harder to find than I thought it would be. I managed to find an old Colner
(Ernesto Colnago) on eBay for a decent price. It came with some Campy Gran
Compe and had internal top-tube routing which was a nice bonus. She
insisted that it have a kickstand though, which became more of a project
than I thought.

I ordered the standard Pletscher Kickstand from Riv but due to the tight
geometry of the frame there isn't alot of room in the rear triangle. I had
to switch the hex bolt to a button head which was much more low-profile.
Then, realizing that the plate would sit crooked on the bottom bracket lugs
had to machine a little rabbet so that the plates would sit flush and clamp
properly. Lastly as this whole assembly was now blocking any chance of
getting at the chain stay bridge I had to bury a flat head in the chain
stay with a nylock so that there was a captive threaded post to bolt on the
fender.

In the end I think it turned out to be a pretty sweet ride. I never thought
a kickstand install could be so complicated.
Next step is a brake upgrade, then I gotta replace these cottered cranks.

Re: [RBW] Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-28 Thread Patrick Moore
If the path is regularly and frequently used by cyclists, then I think
normal people expect bicycles to come up behind them and keep their wits
about them.

That said, I also think it's polite to warn pedestrians, and when I don't
have a bell, I do so by saying "Cyclist!", which works better than "on your
left". It has the advantage of being just one word that is easily
understood.

There are nasty people on recreational trails from time to time, and I try
to ignore them. OTOH, there are criminally clueless people, like the 2
young mothers walking blithely *toward* me one day, straddling both lanes,
who were utterly oblivious to my approaching yells until I almost ran into
them.

[RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-28 Thread Kevin Lindsey
I can tell that this is going to be a long-lived discussion.
My main route takes me on two relatively popular bike paths, both of which
require that the cyclist make a noise before passing. While the bell is a
pleasant option, I found that it often doesn't penetrate through to those
who are plugged in or otherwise distracted. Further, it's not clear to me
that all foreign cultures recognize a bike bell for what it is and means,
and we have lots and lots of foreigners on our bike paths here in the
Washington, D.C. area. Also, as one of those who can't easily tell his
left from his right, I find "on your left!" to be a chore, and I know what
would happen if I were to try and pass someone who also is latitudinally
challenged or who doesn't speak English. Instead, I yell "passing!" when
I'm reasonably certain that I'm close enough to be heard, then follow up
with a "good morning" or "merry Christmas" when going by. At a minimum,
even those who don't speak English will know that someone is heading their
way, and a short, punching "passing!" seems to penetrate better than a
long, drawn-out "on your left!"
This having been said, there are some pedestrians who are so lost in their
thoughts or conversations that nothing short of gunfire will wake them out
of their reveries. Despite loud warnings before passing, I've been
inadvertently spat on by oxygen-deprived runners who simply don't register
my presence, and once had someone clear his nostrils on me as I passed.
All profusely apologized, but the damage was done.

without driving to a remote ride start) is impossible without riding on
one of the most popular MUPs in the country (so much for avoiding the
problem by not riding there) and especially near the District of
Columbia many of the walkers are foreign tourists who don't understand
English. A bell is a universal symbol, understood everywhere. But
Tim's right about many people not noticing, no matter what the warning:
runners lost in their own heads, people listening to music - they're
just not paying attention.

get thanked by me.
Dogs on leash, as much warning as possible. Out of control masters, I
may ring 6 or 7 times.
For the rest, especially earbudworld and always with children,
anticipate panic stop.

was riding my Roadeo today (50 degrees here in KC!) and it doesn't
have a bell yet. A bell is my much preferred method of warning
that I'm there. But I find that many people are startled by a bell
just as much as "on your left." Or they have earbuds in and don't
here you. Also, my experience with "on your left" is that 50% of
the people who hear that, move to their left. I ALWAYS ride with
the knowledge that pedestrians have the right of way, NO MATTER
WHAT. I give a wide berth to others, really slow down when there's
a family, and try to smile and be friendly. But the more I think
about it, it really seems to me that a warning of any type only
works with about half of the people out there. On the other hand,
I passed a woman one day without warning her, she was on the far
right and I was on the far left, at least 5 feet away, and she was
pretty nasty about letting me know she didn't like it. So
sometimes it seems like you just can't win. What do you all think?

2016-12-28 Thread Jon Dukeman,central Colorado

I find that using my bell that I bought from Rivendell gets a better
response than :"on your left" because the bell is more audible at a farther
distance giving the hiker/walker more warning.
The bell either gets a wave, a smile, or a smile and a thank you!

[RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-28 Thread Rusty Click
I believe that you should always signal when passing on multi use trails.
It is often 'required' by the trail rules, and it is certainly common
courtesy whether it is written on a sign or not.
Signaling could be verbal, or a bell. Just because you are the only two
people on the trail, and the pedestrian is far right (with or without pet),
and you plan on cruising by on the far left, doesn't mean it is OK to not
signal. The pedestrian could be on a bluetooth headset getting
instructions from their spouse, or paying attention to the dog who is
paying attention to the squirrel, or engrossed in the social media wonders
of their phone. You just don't know, so call out, or ring the bell, or
both.

I was going to offer yet another "solution" but man oh man, it is quite
apparent to me that the only real "solution" is to never be a problem in
the first place, hence no solutions either as they are 2 sides of a same

.not one thing hss changed.

So Tim, just ride and enjoy the day :)

fair warning, There is a class of runners out there who will intentionally
widen themselves when a bike is trying to pass. I don't know if it's
something kicked around in running bulletin boards, but it is an
intentional act, pressing right of way, and seemingly wanting to force the
bicycle to stop or leave the path.

Bike bells are essential for deer. They know where you are, they know your
speed, and usually stop in their tracks. My hilly neighborhood has a huge
deer herd. I've also been descending 40 mph from the Guadalupe/Pedernales
divide and had a charging buck otherwise intersecting me stop dead in its

[RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-28 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks for that perspective, Ian. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure that
I've been on an MUP as anything but a cyclist. Back in the day when I was a
runner (thus the fake knees today) I ran on the sidewalk, and today I don't
really go for walks, so I've really only cycled on the paths, and haven't
experienced walking with a bike coming by. Incidentally, there are 2 bells on
the Riv order that should be arriving today, one for the Roadeo and one for the
GFs Sam.

One other thing: When I was working in Louisville, there is a wonderful
pedestrian/bike bridge (old converted RR) across the Ohio River. On nice days
it is really, really busy. There were a couple of cyclists on one of those
days, and the woman was incessantly ringing her bell. To me, that was the same
as hollering "Coming through, clear a path for me!" I kind of thought that was
rude, as if she felt by ringing the bell constantly it gave her the right of
way. I rode across the bridge all of the time but on days like that, you just
had to be very patient and really, really slow. There's way too much going on.
But on the other hand, she was going slow, not ringing the bell and blowing by
people, so I should give her a break too.

Peace,
Tim "who probably shouldn't cast stones" Kirch

The lens is plastic.

You can use any 6 volt Busch & Müller, Schmidt or Spanninga taillight with
it. If you use a Supernova taillight, the taillight will have no
standlight. I don't know about other brands of taillights, but most should
work.
