Venkat,

Augmented Reality was ofcourse enticing and interesting, but the
go-to-markets for early technologies are still 3-4 years away. Both
Google/Microsoft Glass and Hololens, were brave billion dollar attempts,
but commercially still very early. Also I wanted to move back, and AR isn't
a market at all in India.

Carbon capture seemed like a thing we could pull off, for an onground
impact/deployment.

Blockchain is nothing but decentralized record keeping/ledger in public,
ran by the public. Technically any multi-party social system that requires
transparency can be answered by blockchain. I am not an expert, but I could
connect with with my team-mate who leads the initiative on blockchain. e.g.
land records, voting, carbon credits etc. e.g. read this

Hello Silklisters,

I am Anirudh Sharma. I do a lot of experimental anti-disciplinary fusion of
technology(sensors, plasma, new media, and social impact).

I was previously researching with future use-cases of transparent display
based Augmented Reality systems in wearable form factors, (a lot like the
ones you see in black mirror) at the MIT Media Lab. Before, In past life i
was a shoemaker, Lechal  was my first venture that saw
life. Here's my personal website  about my
experiments.

For the last few years, I am scaling Graviky Labs, www.graviky.com that
captures air pollution particulate matter and recycles it into pigments and
inks.

Like everyone, I am curious about Blockchain and what impact it might have,
and currently working on fusing it with our air pollution project and
create a credit system for the same(ICO).

Oh...just the normal thing of taking holiday pictures, you want to capture
a moment that you want to remember.  Just on this occasion, the playback
made one realize ...yikes that is really terrible, thats not what the
experience felt like... If it achieved anything, was the realization that
the mental experience counts far more than the visual experience.  Kind of
like watching a video of whitewater rafting  than actually doing it.

moment of my life spent in solitude. It was not a bad thing in hindsight,

Ah, yes! My gig at, what I describe in my resume simply as, "a popular

Porn, interestingly, has a long history of being early adopters of
technology. The success of media/technology like Polaroid, super 8 film,
the web, (and I am told Snapchat, etc.) is driven by human quest for
(Kabuki) sex.

Indian attitudes to sexuality and sex is mixed and contradictory. On the
one hand there is a long tradition (going back to Kama Sutra, certain
Bhakti poetry, etc.) considering sex to be fun and pleasurable.

On the other the patriarchy tries to keep women suppressed through a
veneration of (women's) virginity, an emphasis of abstinence, rules of
impurity around mensuration, etc.

Sex education in India, at least in my days, was a matter of hurriedly
teaching the biology. I remember my biology teacher spending a mere 30-40
minutes on human reproduction (almost entirely speaking in clinical terms
of gametes, fallopian tubes, glans, etc.). I suspect many Indians, wrongly
in my opinion, worry that teaching teenagers about safe and pleasurable sex
would lead to copious copulation and unwanted pregnancies.

The less said about Bollywood's (and its South Indian cousins')  depiction
of courtship, finding a partner, consent, sex, maintaining a healthy
relationship between two adults, etc., the better.

Welcome Cindy! Going through your links, including the lungi dance
one. I'd always assumed that all sex videos are (with the exception of
sex education ones) porn, so this is something new to me.  Even on the
net, any searching for topics relating to sex results in viruses
(virii?) or worse, so I quickly gave it up.

I find that my friends are completely unwilling to discuss sex; we
seem unable to be objective about it. Completely agree with Suresh's
words, that a frank discussion quickly degenerates into prurience and
then a strained, embarrassed silence, and the subject is conveniently
brushed under the carpet.

Have there been any discussions on sex on this list?

I'd love to hear about your experiences while setting this up.

Welcome! 

Now you mention it, that's the funny, or rather, pitiful thing. A frank 
discussion of sex often veers into the prurient, from horny and oversexed but 
inexperienced students, to snickering locker room talk from middle aged people 
who tend not to get much at all.

Places where "the middle ground" exists and people are actually comfortable 
discussing sex are few and far between.

By the way if you haven't already, you might take a look at Kate Lister's 
twitter feed @whoresofyore - she's a sexual / sex work historian who manages to 
keep the discussion fun, frank and interesting.

Hello everyone!

I'm Hari and I was introduced to this list by Mohit (the Just one). Thanks
Udhay for having me on here!

I'm originally from Mysore and I live in Hyderabad, but in the past twelve
years I've also lived in Bangalore and Gurgaon. I've worked in a bunch of
places, having done a few things such as writing code and selling chai in
an F start-up for a living. Currently, I sell ads online.

When I grow up, I want to be a polymath. Seeing as I turned 33 last week it
seems like it will remain a distant dream. However, I'm interested in and
enjoy quizzing, music, books and travel.

I'm happy to be part of Silk and I'm sure there's plenty of familiar people
on here already! I look forward to getting to know the rest of you.

Venkat, we just got started, so we're actually finishing up our first title.
Unfortunately we have been mostly working on client projects right now as we
need the capital before we go into building our own. But soon enough you'll
hear about something we've done :)

Singapore... ah yes the chances are insane. And it hasn't let up. I spend
3/4 my time in Kuala Lumpur, and when I go home I do feel everything's
changed.

This week they're launching the Circle line, for example, so when before one
could not get from my house to MacRitchie reservoir in less than 2 hours by
public transport, it's now down to 20 minutes or so.

Some of the changes remarkable, others not so.

People apply for the Fellowship, or have been nominated by another, at  
which point we invite them to apply. They need to fill out an online  
form that attempts to get to know the candidates beyond the usual  
statistics about academic tests and degrees achieved. We're looking  
for accomplishments over potential, achievement over credentials,  
though many folks chosen will have strong bona fides.  We select a  
heterogeneous group of leaders from technology, entertainment, design,  
science, humanities, the arts, NGOs and entrepreneurship. You'll find  
authors, filmmakers and bloggers. Our target age is 21-40, though  
anyone 18-20 or 41+ is welcome to apply, too. We focus on people from  
five regions of the world: Africa, Asia-Pacific, the Caribbean, Latin  
America and the Middle East.
TEDIndia is unusual in that we're bringing 100 Fellows, rather than  
our usual 25. We also did this at our TEDAfrica conference held in  
June, 2007 in Arusha, Tanzania. Approximately 80% of the fellows will  
be from the subcontinent. In addition to India, you many see folks  
from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet.


How do we choose? We get asked this question a lot. Nearly all the  
applicants are high achievers. The shortest way to explain what we're  
looking for: Be interesting. Many of our fellows have started an  
organization or company made a film, written a book, invented a  
product, or done novel and interesting scientific research. Most have  
incredibly interesting stories that leap off of the screen at you.


What aren't we looking for?  Academic success alone, without  
achievement. Many promising students would make great Fellows later  
after they have begun their life's work (though other students have  
achieved an amazing amount in addition to their studies). Folks who  
are already so far along in their career that a fellowship might not  
prove transformative. Folks who could afford to pay to attend TED  
themselves. And, finally, not only candidates from NGOs, though we  
will have many amazing ones.


Judging from the applications we've reviewed to date, we're going to  
have a great group.

that our conference in Long Beach sells out in a week's time, but it

The Fellowship application process is officially closed. If you know  
about a truly exceptional individual that you think we absolutely must  
have, I'm happy to hear about them but can make no promises. We  
already have a strong group of applicants.


Re: TEDIndia pricing. I acknowledge that it is quite expensive  
relative to conferences held in India. We have two tiers of pricing:  
$2400 for attendees, and a limited amount of $1400 places for people  
from academia and the NGO world.  This price includes housing on the  
Mysore Infosys training campus for up to five days. If, like many  
conferences we held TEDIndia in Mumbai or Dehli, a hotel alone might  
cost $2000 for five nights. All meals, evening events, and even a  
transfer from the Bangalore airport are included.


I think it's fair to consider the true price of a conference how much  
is admission plus lodging plus transportation plus meals.


We hope that attendees will find great value in attending. If it  
proves too expensive, which it will for many, know that eventually,  
nearly all the talks will be released for free for everyone on  
TED.com, and will also end up subtitled into a growing number of  
Indian languages for those who don't share this list's members English  
fluency. We have talks subtitled in 8 Indian languages on TED.com so  
far, with more to come.

Sumant, The India Today Conclave is about the same price, but with  
Dehli hotel prices included, the total costs appears to us to be much  
more expensive. We definitely looked at their pricing model (and  
others) as a guide. TED will never be the least expensive conference  
to attend. However, those prices help bring the conference's speakers  
to the rest of the world on ted.com.


By comparison, TED in Long Beach costs $6,000, $12,000 or $100,000  
(five years). The two higher tiers have additional benefits, and are  
for people interested in funding our other work, including the  
TEDPrize, TED Fellows, and TED.com.  TEDGlobal in Oxford is $4500. A  
limited number of tickets for NGO and Academic attendees at both  
conferences are available for $2,000. Finally, the TED Fellows program  
ensures a great group of 25 amazing people attend per conference as  
our guests. In subsequent years that number will grow as we add senior  
fellows.

TEDIndia is priced at means the cost of admission, lodging, meals  
and transfer.  We have a one price includes everything policy: There  
are no one day passes, or session passes or people coming and going.


And I'm happy you enjoy TED.com for free.  You will always be able to  
do so, and over time we will release virtually all the talks from  
TEDIndia online. People who do attend come for the amazing audience  
and the chance to meet the speakers and for the immersive experience  
we try hard to create.

Kiran, If you execute your plan,  wouldn't be the first time. ; )

Alas, the video will talk appearing soon after the conference, but not  
instantly.


The videos actually take a while to be posted, because we don't just  
take the live mix of the conference and encode it and post it. We  
shoot with five cameras (or more), and then take all the footage and  
produce it more like a short film with editors trained in  
B(Hollywood). We edit out the speaker's pauses, ums and ers, fix the  
sound and color correct and even add subtitles, including many Indian  
languages.


Nonetheless, I'll keep an eye out for you. : )

Shiv, that's a great question. Our company was founded to serve the  
gay and lesbian communities. It offered news, entertainment, travel,  
dating, and many other kinds of content and services. It achieved some  
important milestones: First organization to serve more that 100,000  
GLBT customers (eventually 5,000,000), first company serving the gay  
community to receive venture capital, corporate investment and one of  
the first to attract international brands to advertise. However, I'm  
most proud of the services we provided to people who were in the  
closet, questioning their sexuality or just coming out. We helped a  
meaningful number of people accept themselves, address issues with  
their friends and families if any, and find relationships. It persists  
to this day, but was sold to another company and has been hard hit  
competing against free personal ads on Craigslist.org and niche dating  
sites. I left in 2000.

of Reuben Abraham's and am hard at work on our upcoming TEDIndia  
Conference in Mysore Nov 4-7, 2009. My job at TED encompasses several  
aspects: the TED Fellows program, the TED Book Club, Membership,
and working on producing the conferences.  I am also the conference's  
resident satirist, making fun of the speakers at the end of the  
conference.


Right now we're in the process of selecting 100 Fellows for TEDIndia  
from hundreds of applicants.


In my spare time I am producing and directing a feature length  
documentary on our youngest TEDAfrica Fellow William Kamkwamba, now 21  
whom I've been mentoring for the last two years. Don't try this at  
home. Directing movie while having a full-time job is a distinctly bad  
idea. I'm loving it anyway.


I also work on rural economic development in a village in Malawi,  
Africa (which has nothing at all to do with Madonna, thank goodness.)   
I'm eager to learn as much as possible about the subcontinent before  
the conference.  I welcome your suggestions, referrals and queries.

A brief intro about myself:
My name is Raja Venkataraman. Grew up in Chennai for the first part of my
life until school ended and joined a fairly small college in Bangalore for
my B.Sc in Biosciences. After this I studied Biotechnology at the Madurai
Kamaraj University. Left for the US in 1997 as many others did to pursue a
Ph.D in Miami, FL. Changed courses somewhere along the way and instead of
one Ph.D I ended up with two separate Masters degrees in Molecular biology
and Computer information systems. Continued to work in Miami till last year
when I decided to return to India after 11 long years.

I have been back here around 8 months and I feel much like a space traveller
who returns to his home planet after a long time. Many things have changed
and even more things have NOT. Of the significant things that have changed
are my friends circle that remained back in India. Almost all are married
*some even divorced* with children (unlike myself) who don't have time
anymore for a nice conversation or traveling. They all seem consumed by
their jobs and family committments. So far I have found it hard to find
myself and maintain an intellectual mileu of peers and complete the settling
down process in India.

This is when one of my friends (Dinesh Venkateshwaran) introduced me to
Silklist. I am hoping to get introduced to like minded individuals and
participate in many activities and stimulating conversations for a long time
to come.

I hope I have covered enough in terms of an introduction. Please feel free
to ask if there is anything else you would like me to add about myself.

Welcome Raja. I'm afraid that intellectual company is going to be
difficult outside of small isolated pockets in a few cities in India.
This was one of my biggest complaints about India when I returned from
the US, and whether by intent or by accident I no longer remain in
India.

Maybe I am not as intellectually enlightened, but I've survived. IMO,
it's just a matter of how soon will you get assimilated.
You've got used to living in a completely different kind of environment,
shielded from everyone else. And then you come to India where you *will*
know how your neighbour in the 8th house on your left (or the 12th floor
if you live in a flat) has a spat with his cousin brother twice removed.
You think this is too much information, but it seems normal here. Not to
mention that all the applications in your computer keep telling you that
colour is spelt color. :-)

Raja, maybe we should catch up for a coffee or a beer or your poison of
choice when I am in Chennai later this week. Message me offlist if you
want to hear from someone who moved back 2 years ago and survives. It
will be nice to meet some silk listers old and new in Chennai.

Thanks for your responses. I knew I had forgotten to mention something!
Thanks for pointing it out Deepa.
I am based currently in Bangalore actually but I keep going to Chennai
periodically (which means about once a month for a few days). Initially my
shutting rates were higher since I remained jobless for a while, but
currently I have joined one of my friends who started his own
'Bioinformatics' company here in Benson Town, Bangalore.

Well when I said that the only point I was trying to make was that I had
buried myself out of sight for years doing nothing but pretty much studying
and working and it just feels like in some ways people here in my age group
(my friends from school and college) had already traversed two laps in the
game of life before I even managed to complete one. So a lot of gap has
built up.
I don't know whether that sounds very like OR unlike India. I didn't mean it
at all like I am shocked that 'divorce happens here now'. Among my peers the
fad of 'Love' marriage was also big. I think living abroad if it had taught
me anything at all has taught me that love marriage is ultimately also
just marriage and it can go just as wrong as any other kind of marriage. so
in that sense I agree with you.

But when I meant intellectual company I guess I meant people that believe in
showing an open-minded interest to a broad range of things and ability to
discuss something heatedly without getting personal. Thats sometimes a rare
commodity.

I don't know if this is a function of being back or that you've been in an
academic setting for 11 years. I felt similarly when I got back as well
(though I did spend the first couple of years in academia here). But later
on I realised that academia isn't necessarily where you meet intellectuals
(..often not at all). Sometimes it's just one's outlook... There are lots of
very bright people in all walks of life. The other day I met someone who was
firguring out a new way of enhancing primary healtchare in rural India:
easily one of the brighter people I've met. Last week I also met a so called
'genius' from academia who made one of the worst fund-raising pitches I've
heard in a long time.

Figure out where you are staying first. Chennai Trade Center is beside a
busy highway with nothing much near it except an IT park (LT, IBM etc) and
some not too good restaurants. You will probably get housed somewhere in
the vadapalani / guindy etc areas .. 6..10 km away from the trade center.

There are more reasonable dining options within a short haul of those
places, I guess.  Figure out where you are staying first, and then let us
know.

Thanks for the welcome. Appreciate it.. However, your statement presumes a
lot about me and my remark about my old friends here and was taken a little
out of context. I was just trying to point out that since most of my friends
and I were in different places in our lives it was hard to find common
ground to meet on anymore. Nothing was said about my mileage being measured
against theirs. Comparing two things does not mean one is measured with the
intention of making it just like the other. I am certainly happy with where
I am in life since I chose it for myself. If I wanted to play catch up I
wouldn't be here on silklist.. I would be busy building a profile on
Shadi.com. :-)

I am Sanjeev Kumar - after meandering around (Middle East, Arica, Oz land,
Far East) for the last 14 years - I have finally arrived home
(Bangalore4me).  I currently head sales and marketing for a 3i Infotech
Subsidiary - focussed on Consumer (so it is Retail business not IT :) ) -
the brands that we have are Taxsmile.com (online tax filing),
e-mudhra.com(we have crashed the digital signature pricing to make it
more affordable to
common man) ...and many more to come...have worked on ERP implementations,
project management, product management, alliances, business head roles
across different geographies and have jumped very few jobs.  I Love single
malt, travel (not on business nor to covet airmiles - which had accumulated
galore the last 14 years) and music, my family (not nessarily in the order
mentioned)...

We also run away from the cities once in a while under the guise of FoU
(Friends of Udhay) where, again, we drink copious amounts of alcohol and
