[SLUG] A Toshiba Computer.

2010-12-28 Thread wbennett
So, I bought a new computer at the (ahem) Boxing Day Sales. It's a Toshiba and I'd like some advice on (a) heaving the (obligatory) Windows out of the system and (b) installing the latest Ubuntu. [I'm surprised at the reaction of some people on learning of my intentions. Some regard me as a

Re: [SLUG] Facebook Password Reset Confirmation

2011-01-03 Thread wbennett
For what it's worth, several others received that Facebook bumph; some several times. I don't know what it means, or how it happened. My own reaction was to ignore (ie., delete) it. I suppose I should be concerned about it; presumably it means that some part of SLUG's security has been

[SLUG] Accessing a printer.

2011-05-15 Thread wbennett
The laptop has a divided hard drive: Windows7 and Ubuntu. I recently added a printer. To the Windows section. Installed drivers to this section I’d like to access the printer from the Ubuntu part of the hard drive. So. Do I have to install drivers to the Ubuntu section of the disc? Or can the

[SLUG] Article, Linux, APC.

2011-06-17 Thread wbennett
Has anyone read/have an opinion of the article Is Linux finished that appears in the APC magazine of July 2011? I haven't read it. A friend alerted me; being the suspicious sod that I am, my first reaction would be to check the provenance of the material and the qualifications of the writer. If

[SLUG] A reliable crossword compiler.

2011-11-06 Thread wbennett
Can anyone recommend a simple crossword compilerthat will work on Ubuntu? The one provided by the Department is as slow as a wet week and provides crosswords unworthy of the name. Ideally, I'd like to use a list of, say, fifteen surnames (ie., no clues) and it get on with fitting them into a grid

2011-11-06 Thread wbennett
Crossword maker is what I'm after. I suppose I could supply a list of names as both clues and answers. That might work. Even so, a crossword maker that could accommodate say 15 names would be nice. Regards, Bill. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Are you looking for a Word

I’m a Librarian. The Department would like a stocktake. Our barcode reader can recognise who’s holding it. If it’s my assistant, it will work; if it’s me, it sulks. I’d like to: (a) scan some barcodes, (b) stack them and (c) download them to the Department’s system (which, for any fellow

I have a printer, a Brother H5340 OD. In past editions of Ubuntu, I managed to connect it to the laptop via a USB port. However, not this time. I assume that when I installed the latest Ubuntu, the printer driver was saved and lurks somewhere in the machine. Details: Toshiba Sattelite A660,
