Anyways, I've finally gotten around to installing a new Weber DGV 32/36 carb
and 4-2-1 header. Running into some problems though.
When I start the car, it fires, but instantly dies.

Tried using dupli-color paints, but on my initial tests it just will NOT spray right.

tackling the sticking throttle problem wrong. The cable lube thing wasn't the
issue. The issue is I don't have any sort of return spring at the body.

Quick update:
The horizontal vinyl sheet in the passenger side shelf/glovebox was peeling
apart. So it was time for it to go. After spending a few hours on a stubborn
nut/bolt mounting it to the radio area, alas the shelf was finally out. Ah,
cardboard. Why did they make this out of cardboard?
Well, I did something stupid Sunday. There's a piece of cardboard, used as a
shim between the trunk wall and the white plastic piece that the trunk
mechanism locks on.
Attempting to remove or replace it just resulted in problems. Sadly, putting
the original cardboard piece back in didn't work.
This seems to be happening every 2 months, on the dot.
The overdrive gearshift knob loosens up. When the final loosening happens, I
have to once again prise off the cover, and then awkwardly screw on the nut. A
bit difficult since it's just those 2 notches you can screw on.

comes loose on a regular basis, and gives me something to do while waiting at

valve clearence adjustments. I know how to slacken & stick in the proper
feelers, just don't know which one to do when the engine is cranked to where.

lbs/foot, depending on materials for the conrod. One said phosphate, I think?

those. What are they? Just plain reflectors? Something customized? I am at a

Taking it out last night for ice cream was fun, kinda. But that clutch is
driving me nuts. If a clutch slips over a certain RPMs(regardless of gear), is
it simply time for a new one? If that is so, I am willing to accept that.
But the question is the approach I take on it.

I think I got my fuel consumption problem backwards...
The last time I filled my tank, the fuel indicator for all intents and
purposes, read empty. I filled it up, and it was 7.5 gallons.
Yeah, like that. And when the fuel tank is low, I sometimes hear a

measurements on wears of things.
1. Would it be possible to do a temporary reassembly of parts of the mainshaft
for re-assembly?
2. What does a worn syncro ring look like? Never seeing a good one or bad one,

just have 2 holes for removal? Harbor Freight Tools sells a pin wrench
for a measly 4 dollars. It worked just perfectly.
My expectation was I'd have to search all over mail order part houses

the new layshaft. I put the dowel pin in with my greatest strength, and
slid 'er in in the gearbox.
But, when I put the front of the overdrive adaptor in, I position the
dowel downward so it fits in the bottommost groove.

There's a metal, ~2.5 inch long piece of twisted metal(90 degrees) that has 2
holes(1 long, one short) that I assume is for the link to the exhaust from the
overdrive adaptor. There's even an elongated bolt for it. Which bolt hole does
this go on for the J-type overdrive adaptor at the bottom? T
I'm almost done with the gearbox rebuild and thus subsequent road
testing after that.
Here's the brick wall I ran into: ran out of gearbox oil. I had 2
bottles(totalling almost 2 bottles worth) of Valvoline 80w90 I put in.
But with a rebuilt overdrive, it is needing quite a bit more.

on so I can rest the radio on it. After struggling with it starting(the fuel
pressure regulator wasn't cooperating), I was able to give the new clutch &
tranny a try. It was a success.

Sounds like where I got stuck on gearbox disassembly when I did it on my '79.
What I got stuck on was there was that little chuck key thing you can hammer
out(ie "with a suitable drift") and then the mainshaft bearing can be removed.

tours" communism tour. I got to ride in a Trabant car. I must say, the Trabant
makes my Spit looks like some sort of high-tech supercar. 2-cycle engine, goofy

Okay, so the weather is finally getting better in the twin cities,
enough to soon get working on the car again. I last left my Spitfire
needing a bolt to be re-torqued right on the gearshifter. More
specifically, it's a bolt that got loosened by its own that made for
some super-sloppy gearshift
What I did for a Weber DGV + 2+4+1 exhaust was shave off(ie grind) a bit
of the intake manifold(where they touch) until I was able to slip a
piece of paper between the two. Before that, the manifold got slightly
pushed up enough to let too much air in there and thus the car wouldn't
idle unless

charging, it's not going to turn the starter motor over. I double
checked the battery terminals, etc.

When I pulled off the dashboard, there was the wiring legend printed right on
top of the cassette deck. Wow, the wiring is quite a bit off what it should be.
I have the proper in-line fuse-abled red & yellow wiring feed lines for juice.

It all boiled down to just re-doing the wiring connections. A shelf part that

convinced it's the float in the fuel tank that has expired, since
sometimes I can hear it bounce on something. A 12 mile journey should

I double checked the union between the plastic line & metal line near
the rear tire. Dry.
I take off the rear cockpit panel in the trunk. Wetness. My repair from
many moons ago apparently wasn't good enough on the fuel meter ring.
I got the fuel tank from Vicky Brit today. She's a beaut. I even got an
extra locking ring & gasket. Didn't know they came with one already.
Also got a new fuel float, and this one is a preferred brass float.

some initial testing of the new components I bought. Hooked up the fuel meter
to the wires, turned on ACC & played around with the armature. It was good. Was
able to move it up & down without issue.

The Fuel filler cap doesn't fit on quite right. At best, it sticks out a third
of an inch from where it should be. It seems the fuel filler neck on the tank

remaining battery power to not need using the cigarette lighter socket(which
works fine so far).
