Re: Local network

2015-01-05 Thread Tres Finocchiaro

You would need to set up a local XMPP server on a suitable machine in
your network then allow Pidgin clients to connect to it.

This statement is correct, but using Bonjour on the same network would
eliminate the need for a server entirely and clients would still be able to
use chat for inter-office communication.

You can see a list of servers and capabilities here:

Re: Local network

2015-01-05 Thread Tres Finocchiaro

Indeed, Bonjour is a solution, but I think it's probably not very
configurable. It might be sufficient though.

Yes, there is almost no configurable options at all. For example, if you
require conversation logging, you can turn that on at the PC level but any
user can just as easily turn it off.

Display names are exactly as they are typed and you must all be on the same
network (or have a mDNS reflector service which relays the broadcast from
one network to the next).

Also, from a security perspective, the mDNS protocol in general has some
items that you may want to research as well:

If you've setup Pidgin in the past to user a specific service (Google, AOL,

Re: Hello World, how to use bonjour

2014-11-03 Thread Tres Finocchiaro

my question goes into how to use it

First, please reply all when emailing this list so that your responses go
the entire list.

Secondly, the Bonjour protocol (or more properly known as ZeroConfig) is
already supported in Pidgin, so when you say I would love to see more
features on this IM it leads me to believe that you don't know that it is
already supported. But please be aware that Bonjour does a lot more than
chat. For example, Pidgin won't help you find a Bonjour-supported printer,
or find AirPlay devices on your network. :)

Here is the wikipedia article on ZeroConfig:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-configuration_networking

From an implementation perspective, your network complexity can make or
break a Bonjour roll-out. This is because of the way discovery works.
Unless you have an mDNS reflector, running Bonjour from different subnets
can have problems. http://linux.die.net/man/5/avahi-daemon.conf

From a Linux-desktop perspective, install avahi-discover and it should work
automatically.

I do believe there is a lack of documentation on this topic, but from a
functionality perspective, it already works very well!

Below is a screenshot of Windows 8 talking to Ubuntu 12.04 using the
Bonjour protocol.

Re: Hello World, how to use bonjour

2014-11-03 Thread Tres Finocchiaro

This is my point. A more specific questions goes on the lines of:
 - How do I create an account.

You don't. Adium's tutorial
ftp://ftp.cs.stanford.edu/pub/Mac/Adium.app/Contents/Resources/AdiumHelp/pgs/Account-Bonjour.htmlis
a bit better in this regard (the software differs slightly, but same idea)

 - What do I need to be running t make the account work (you said to
install avahi-discover) but I think this is more complex than flipping
a switch on the preferences. IE seems this is a gtk app and I use KDE.

Pidgin already requires GTK and avahi-discover uses GTK w/ what appears to
be a python-gtk GUI. I'm not sure if there is a gui-less version, you'll
have to contact the avahi list, but as a KDE user I doubt this is the first
GTK app you've installed.

 - What is the process to discover users, is there a 'scan' tool or does
users just show up on my buddy list.

They just show up. It's part of the protocol. You can use the command
line tool avahi-discover as well, if you are ok with installing it.

 - I see that the users show up on a bonjour group. Is this the default?

Yes.

If you read carefully you could see that I already knew all that. I was
asking for Pidgin Bonjour documentation and not Bonjour documentation.
Which is why I was addressing this mailing list.

And I stated that documentation is lacking in this regard. Do you normally
criticize those that help you? :)

Re: Settings and Options

2014-10-29 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
@Joey,

This is almost certainly provided as a 3rd party plugin. I would assume
it's the version bundled with the Purple Plugin Pack, however there is no
obvious download location for Windows (which I assume all of your clients
use) so you should locate groupmsg.dll on a computer that already has this
installed and copy it to the other computers. It can be found in the
32-bit Program Files directory under Pidgin\plugins.

In the mean time if you find an official win32 mirror of this plugin, let
me know and I'd be happy to test it out.

Re: Errors in Pidgin 2.8

2014-10-28 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
@Bill,

It sounds like something is preventing a good encrypted channel from
opening between your clients and AOL. This can be caused by a few things,
namely 1. A change in AOLs protocol. 2. A change in network settings on
your side. 3. An expired certificate.

In the case of this specific error, it has roots that go back as far as 5
years.

https://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/11142

Some recommendations are to temporarily disable encryption (one comment
suggests the unencrypted password is sent as MD5 and never sent as clear
text, I cannot confirm this).

I was able to reproduce your error, but my network administrator may be
restricting this traffic so I am not a good use case. Perhaps someone else
can reproduce this as well.

Re: XMPP URI's on Windows

2014-08-12 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
I spent some time reproducing your issue. It appears Pidgin will not
respond to the URI request unless the XMPP service that you have is valid,
online and enabled. So just sign in with a valid XMPP account and the

Does the second output matter if I don't use IE as my browser?

Please contact Oracle IT support (a Oracle Systems Administrator or Oracle

Many Oracle employees erroneously contact this list and there must be some

We have this same issue over at the LMMS project site (hosted on

is one of several reasons.

There are not many services that offer everything that SourceForge does for

Re: Can't reinstall pidgin

2014-06-16 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
@Mitch,

The pidgin mailing list does not have access to your passwords. You would
instead have to contact the provider of the service you were using.

Pidgin supports many services so this could be many places, but a good
place to start is someone else in your organization including an IT
representative.

The person who reloaded your computer can likely check a colleagues
computer to determine the service being used and then escalate from there.
In absolutely no circumstance will this mailing list be able to retrieve
your password.

any review, dissemination, replication or distribution of this communication

Re: Pidgin account is gone

2014-06-04 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
Rhonda,

Hi, if you use Pidgin for chat at work it is very likely that this was
setup by someone in your IT department.

This is a public mailing list, and although we can help you troubleshoot
your problem it is very likely that your IT department would be the only
ones able to help you in this circumstance. There is nobody on this public
mailing list with access to any of your account information.

If Pidgin is something that you set up yourself, please provide the
technical details of how you set this up such as the protocol you are using
and any special settings you have entered. Do not send your account name
and do not send your password.

Again, this is likely something your IT department or IT contact should be
able to look into first and foremost.

Re: Getting my workplace connected

2014-06-03 Thread Tres Finocchiaro

I would like to get my small company using Pidgin but it is not working. I
do not care if we use our gmail or davron.net accounts but either way
when I enable it says under my e-mail it is not authorized. What should I
 do to fix this?

Allison,

You have a few options. First I'd like to warn you that this is a public
mailing list.

Option 1: Using Bonjour. If you have a small company that is all on a
single network (one subnet) you will be happy to know that Pidgin works
great in combination with the Bonjour protocol. This requires very little
setup and works great for inter-office communication. Instructions are
available here:
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Protocol%20Specific%20Questions#BonjourLink-LocalMessaging

Option 2: Using Google Talk (Gmail): Google Talk requires certain ports
to be open on your company firewall. Some people have had success by
switching the Port number in preferences from 5222 to 443. This may get
you further.

Option 3: Davron.net: No one on this list would know about your davron.net
accounts so you would have to explain in much more detail about what these
are and what technology they use before any recommendations can be made.
Again, please be discreet with information as you are on a public mailing
list.

This depends what service you are using. Pidgin works with a very large
amount of services (for example: Google Chat, Facebook, AIM, Yahoo, and
many others).

In nearly every case, your client was set up by either you or someone
internal to your organization.

You've contacted a mailing list that helps people with the Pidgin software.
It's like contacting Microsoft when you can't get into your Gmail.
Microsoft may have made Internet Explorer, but they can't reset your Gmail

Re: NSIS Error when trying to uninstall Pidgin

2014-04-03 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
Another recommendation is to make sure pidgin is not set to load on
startup, reboot, disable your antivirus, install and then uninstall.

If the uninstaller is crashing it is most likely caused by something other
than the nullsoft installer. This could be several things such as
anti-malware blocking a file or registry operation, corrupt or improper
permissions in the registry, corrupt files, bad hard driver sectors, locked
or partial files, etc. You will likely need to take corrective action on
the underlying issue before this issue will be fixed. There are several
free tools such as CCleaner, Malwarebytes, chkdsk which can help. If these
don't help, you may choose to Google the steps to manually uninstall an
application (with CCleaner supports as well).

Re: Alternative to SourceForge

2014-03-24 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
I took some time refreshing the download page (about 30 times) and although
I saw some misleading download links, none of them seemed to be associated
with adware or malware.

http://i.imgur.com/FYtzjs7.png

Depending on the targeting of these ads, there may be some that are
malware. This isn't the first complaint I've seen about sourceforge having
malware. Over on the LMMS project, we've had similar concerns, but it
seems sourceforge has removed them as there haven't been complaints in
quite some time.

It is likely that the OP (Marc) has 1. Had issues in the past or 2. Already
has malware which is triggering a false-positive warning on this page.

So to confirm Mark's answer, I do not find any bad links on the download
page.

The window may have just fallen outside of your screen.

When you right click the tray icon, is the context menu there?

If you double click the buddy list and it doesn't appear on your screen,
you can reposition it to a screen with Windows Key + Right (or left, etc).

If that does't work you may also want to close and rename
your %appdata%\.purple directory then reopen.

Finally, if that doesn't work, I'd advise to Uninstall via control panel

You've contacted a public mailing list for the 3rd party program Pidgin.
This mailing list is for help using and debugging the software, but does

We don't know your environment, so you'll first need to see which protocol
the user is using and then contact that provider.

For example, if the service is AIM, use AOL's preferred method for
resetting passwords.

If the service is SIPE/Communicator, contact your internal IT
department (etc).

Please escalate to the service provide in which you are using, as Pidgin
itself is not a service provider and does not have people's passwords.

OpenFire works fantastic with Pidgin. Using it now with the Avaya

Is the crash you are experiencing on one ore more computers?

There is a debug window from the help menu that may help.

Also any information about the protocol you are using (XMPP, SIPE, etc) is
beneficial.

I'm not a developer, but I'd be happy to review the debug log. If it has
confidential information, you may wish to email a developer directly as
emails on this list are publicly searchable, so any conversations and
attachments you send to this list will end up in search archives for years

@Michael,

it’s only crashing on one of the 4 computers that run pidgin

If it is only happening on one computer, that would lead me to believe it's
a problem isolated to that computer.

I apologize for the obviousness here, but have you tried uninstalling and
reinstalling on that computer?

Are the computers windows? Are they running the same build?

Also, have you tried using a separate profile to rule out that it's not the
settings files in .purple that are causing this?

I've had some non-obvious crashes (i.e. corrupt history file) that caused
this in the past that was fixed just by renaming/moving the .purple

@Cody,

These emails go to a public community supported mailing list for a free
software product called Pidgin. For proper support, you should always ask
your IT department or contractor first as we do not have access to your

If by chance you are using Office Communicator, I've been able to sign in

switching to TCP.

This is a security risk though and you should contact your internal IT

When you installed the plugin pack, did you do so via yum or via rpm search?

Re: Can not find 32 bit bonjour that installs on 64 bit windows so I can use bonjour with Pidgin

2013-12-09 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
@Mark,

My testing was done on Windows 8 64-bit . As you can see in the below
linked screenshot, a *Program Files\ *as well as as *Program Files
(x86)\*directory was created.

The two items listed in your control panel sound accurate with mine. They
have different names, but one uninstalls the 32-bit, the other uninstalls
the 64-bit.

http://i.imgur.com/oHhBfuP.png

This should be pretty trivial. I also assume you've completely closed
Pidgin and restarted it (via Tray Icon) to no avail.

Perhaps someone else on the list can confirm it work with Windows 7 64-bit,
since our OSs are different.

I agree that bonjour 2.0.2 from Apple includes both 32 and 64 bit versions
(as I used the same executable to install Bonjour on my 32 bit systems),
the problem is it doesn’t give you the option for installing the 32 bit
version on a 64 bit OS (I have both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows 7 machines on
my home network and it installed the corresponding version of Bonjour on
each). All the 32 bit Windows machines (3 of them), and my iMAC (64bit but
has Bonjour already installed and I’m using the Messages application there)
are working with Pidgin/Bonjour fine. The issue is still with my 64 bit
 Windows 7 system.

So your statement: “When you install, you will see two items in the
control panel…” is the part that isn’t what I see. When I install Bonjour
on my 64 bit system, I see one item for Bonjour (the other item is the
“Bonjour Print Services”). When I run the installer it explicitly says
“Welcome to the Bonjour Print Services Installer”, and lists 2.0.2.0 x64 at
the bottom right near the “Cancel” button (with no option to modify that).

Any help you can provide is very much appreciated.

 Mark

 @Mark,

I can confirm that the recommended download for 64-bit Bonjour for Windows
(Bonjour 2.0.2 from Apple) also included the 32-bit version.

When you install, you will see two items in the control panel, and when
you add a Bonjour account in Pidgin and enable it, you should notice the
 error message has gone away.

In order to start using Bonjour, you need at least one other device on
your network (same subnet allowing broadcast traffic) running Bonjour as
 well.

The wiki article on the Pidgin page says to install both 64-bit and
32-bit, but from the best of my knowledge, it appears Bonjour 2.0.2
 includes both.

If this is incorrect, please correct me.

Given what you said about closing Pidgin, I realize I hadn’t, so

Depending on your network configuration, port 5222 may be blocked.

Can you change some settings and see if this helps? This has helped me

1. Accounts, Manage, Modify
2. Advanced
3. Connect port: 80
4. Connect server: talk.google.com
5. Save
6. Uncheck and then recheck the box. Accept the certificate when prompted.

If this is unsuccessful and you need to restore the default settings:

1. Connect port: 5222
2. Connect server: blank

Re: Password reset

2013-12-04 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
@Loera,

Since you are using a Yahoo address, you will likely need to contact Yahoo
for this.

https://edit.yahoo.com/forgotroot

Once you have completed the password reset, you may then need to update
your Pidgin password to match.

Then you will need to speak with your Network Administrator (or sometimes
 Email Administrator).

From my experience, if you are using Pidgin as recommended by them, they
can help. If you are using Pidgin as an alternative to an official client
(such as Microsoft Office Communicator or Lotus Sametime) cooperation with
 the administrator becomes less likely.

Can you provide some information about the service you are using?

For example, are you using Pidgin at work? Are you using it to connect
 to AIM, Google Talk, Facebook?

Generally speaking, you can change how your name appears to yourself
 (Accounts, Manage, Modify, Local Alias).

However, this does not change it for others. That is often done on the
back end, which varies depending on the service you are using.

I think the online/offline status is not important. AOL, AIM, ICQ,
Web-ICQ, Pidgin, etc. have no idea whether the person's phone is on
or off. That functionality isn't supported by the SMS network.
Moreover, SMS is a store-and-forward system, where if a phone is off
or disconnected then text messages destined for that phone will be
stored until the next time the phone connects to the mobile network.

So Web-ICQ should do what Pidgin does, which is always show such
contacts to be online, since they are always contactable. That
Web-ICQ shows my contacts to be offline is then, perhaps, a clue,
indicating that the contacts were, perhaps, not added correctly.

Perhaps. Or it could just be a behavioral difference between Web-ICQ
and Pidgin. To my knowledge there isn't much that can be wrong about
the way these buddies are added. To my knowledge there isn't anything
special about the buddies--they're just specially formatted usernames.

Does Web-ICQ show your contacts to be offline also?

Yes, Web-ICQ shows my mobile contact to be offline also.

Re: Does ICQ Only SMS To Those 5 Countries ?

2013-12-03 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
There is an unofficial plugin that allows SMS in Pidgin via Google's
services. Note, Google intentionally restricts this feature to official
Google clients, the author of this plugin circumvents that and I'm not sure
of the repercussions:
http://snarfed.org/google_talk_sms_pidgin_plugin

In regards to all SMS everywhere, a Google search returns some services
(some free, some at a premium) that offer global SMS. If you find one that
accepts XMPP or offers a Pidgin compatible plugin, please share.

That might explain my problem. Does ICQ send SMS messages only to
Australia, Canada, Israel, Singapore and Taiwan? I have been trying
to use my ICQ account to send text messages to cellphones in the
United States and France. In particular, I was looking for a way to
send text messages to France, since I can already use voice.google.com
to send text messages to cellphones in the United States (although,
parenthetically, I don't know how to do so from pidgin or empathy, but
nor did I investigate the question). Does ICQ simply not support
texting in France, or the United States? That would explain my
inability to do so (although, again parenthetically, pidgin and
empathy should have known enough to describe my French contact as
offline since a cellphone number beginning with +33 is clearly not
in Australia, Canada, Israel, Singapore, or Taiwan, although it was
less obvious that the cellphone numbers beginning with +1 were not in
 Canada).

If not thru ICQ, is there any other way to send text messages to
cellphones in France? Thank you in advance for any and all replies.

I have used Pidgin for years, and to start the program each weekday
morning, I would double-click on my Pidgin shortcut icon on my Desktop.
The software would then display the chat rooms that I have set for
AutoJoin, and then a minute or two later, the Buddy List would appear on
the right side of my monitor (overlayed over existing Desktop icons). The
Buddy List window always had the standard Minimize, Maximize, and Close
buttons in its upper right-hand corner, and I would always minimize the
List to my Status bar at the bottom of the screen so that I could access it
 as needed during the day.

Recently, I had to disconnect my laptop from the external monitor so
that I could take the laptop down to the office. When I brought it home
and re-attached it to the external monitor, the start-up process suddenly
changed. Now when I double-click on the Pidgin icon on my desktop in the
morning, the chat rooms appear as expected, but the Buddy List no longer
sits on top of existing Desktop icons, it shoves them over to the left and
far left of my screen, and the buttons in the upper right-hand corner have
changed. Now I get only a Close icon (a very small one) -- the Minimize
 and Maximize buttons are gone.

The only workaround that I’ve found is to close the Buddy List, then
re-open it using the Pidgin icon in the Sys Tray. The Minimize, Maximize,
and Close buttons appear normally in the upper right-hand corner of the
List, but it still pushes any underlying Desktop icons over to the left or
 far left when it opens.

I can’t find any settings related to this in the Preferences. How can I
fix this? It’s very annoying to have to move my Desktop icons back into
 place each morning.

I think the behavior that you're describing is caused by the Dockable
Buddy List checkbox in the Windows Pidgin Options plugin.

Re: Add Account

2013-11-19 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
@Vaibhav,

If all traffic to the site is completely blocked, the only alternative it
to use a 3rd party anonymizer or proxy. In almost all cases, these proxy
services violate company and/or federal law and the methods to perform
these steps will not be made available on this mailing list or via email,
so please do not ask.

If traffic to the site is allowed, but there are firewall port restrictions
preventing just the chat service (port 5222) from functioning there are
alternate ports that can be used to be compatible with common firewall port
blocking.

Once it has found the buddy in the list, you have to hit ESC or Enter

I just start typing and it will behave the same way by searching for a

Are you inquiring about CTRL+F on the buddy list or conversation window?

If you're speaking about the buddy list, it works for me in 2.10.7. What
version are you running?

Once it has found the buddy in the list, you have to hit ESC or Enter
afterward. If you don't, mouse and arrow navigation of the buddy list is
blocked (a pet peeve of mine, but I deal with it). I believe this is
inherent to the GTK runtime that is used by Pidgin.

Re: QZ Print issue

2013-10-24 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
Paris,

That is a good question.

It's all done within the jnlp now. You can open it with a text editor to
see where the jar is referenced. You can't change it or rename it since
it's verified against a digitally signed version contained inside
qz-print.jar called JNLP-INF/APPLICATION.JNLPhttp://i.imgur.com/IB3uWP2.png

 Paris,

1. I would recommend removing the archive attribute as it is not
supported using the JNLP method.
2. Using the Java Control Panel, clear your cache as the old jnlp file
may be residual. *Delete it manually http://i.imgur.com/Fa8F70g.png* from
the Java Control Panel.
3. Also, this may be irrelevant, but I see you have nested double
quotes at @Url.Content.
4. Last, a trick for forcing the latest JNLP is to put some characters
after it (the JavaScirpt timestamp works well for this, but you can use
anything).

Spaces in URI Handler

2013-10-02 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
Hi,

What is the preferred method for including spaces in the xmpp: URI handler
address?

I've used %20 as described in section 2.1 of the URI RFC to no avail.

I've found a previous email thread recommending using the colon as a
separator to no avail as well.

Here's the example I'm trying:

xmpp:mybuddy@mydomain?message;body=Hello%20World

I expect to see in the conversation window:

 Hello World

But instead I see in the conversation window:

 Hello%20World

I've searched the internet and found this issue mentioned without a working
solution. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

Google talk uses XMPP. The drop-down option is only offered as a

Despite how strange it looks, it is correct by switching to XMPP. If you
have connectivity problems it is very likely they are caused by something
unrelated to this observation.

Re: GnuTLS error (I think). Connecting through proxy to office communicator

2013-09-05 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
Jeff,

Have you been able to reproduce this error on Windows? I used Pidgin +
SIPE for years in a Windows and Ubuntu environment without any major issues.

The login format was the biggest catch for me. Here are the settings I
used:

Also, depending on your build of Linux, you may be able to find precompiled
binaries. At the time I wrote my
tutorialhttp://tresdev.blogspot.com/2009/08/pidgin-microsoft-office-communicator.htmlthey
were all unofficial repos, but it appears most distros have
precompiled SIPE binaries now, usually under the package name pidgin-sipe.

Alternatively, you may have luck switching from TLS to NTLM or Kerberos,
but I was only successful with TLS, which you are already trying.

Re: pidgin disconnects, finch stable

2013-09-04 Thread Tres Finocchiaro

any pointers on how to make that setting permanent, so the icon will do
 that?

Please try this (Tested in Ubuntu 12.10)

sudo gedit '/usr/share/applications/pidgin.desktop'

Change the line:

 Exec=pidgin

to:

 Exec=pidgin -f

If you've created any shortcuts elsewhere, you will want to make this same
change on those files. They are usually .desktop file extensions.

Or, alternately, you can create a file in /usr/sbin called pidgin. Use
this method with extreme care:

sudo gedit /usr/sbin/pidgin

Paste this:

#!/bin/sh
 echo Starting pidgin -f...
 /usr/bin/pidgin -f $@
 exit 0

Make the file executable:

 sudo chmod +x /usr/sbin/pidgin

Now all calls to pidgin *should* use your newly modified version. Test
this by launching it from the command line, and you should receive a
message Starting pidgin -f. Modify to your needs.

Re: Fwd: about accounts file

2013-08-25 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
And similarly, if your argument, that all passwords must be difficult to
type and must be near impossible to read over the shoulder or else they are
REALLY BAD, which in turn makes the user STUPID seems naive and ignorant to
any basic practical, efficient, easy to remember methods of memorization.

The password:

Eth@ngoesoutofh1swaytocr3ategreatpasswords!

Is more complex than your example and not subject to a common rainbow
attack. In addition, also requires less memorization to retain, since it
relies on relational ideas in our of long term memory. To call someone
stupid for choosing this password seems a big harsh on a percentage of the
population that's going to *better* lengths to secure their data. Stating
password1 is stupid is accurate for several reasons, however, does that
in turn make all easily retainable passwords stupid as well? I for one
tend to choose something closer to a sentence over hard to type and
remember character strings? Am I and most people I know doing it wrong?
Is there something about passwords WE are naive to?
