I finally remembered the DOS screen reader I used before WindowEyes. It was
Provox, written by Chuck Hallenbach. Truthfully, Grandpa DOS often wishes he
could go back to those good old days! Smile! I still have my version 7 copy
and just maybe I will do back.

I solved my problem.
After going into the factory settings dialog, I saw that none of the
default sets were installed and, even after trying to install them, it
kept saying na for the version number. I figured it was just easier to
uninstall and reinstall Window-eyes, rather than trying to do
I'm able to tab through the Help -> About window and have it speak the
version.
You can also go to Help -> Health report. The version is displayed in there.
It's probably a good idea to enable Firefox automatic updating if you
ahven't. That's not a piece of software that is good to let fall too
