As Thomas wrote you, cookies are seen as text, compare %cookie with
the %put macro.
However I see two options that might work for you:
1 Set every cookie in a separate file, list those files in your
cookie.txt and call your cookie like this:
  %QInclude="%Cookie='%cookie'txt'"
2 Set all your cookies in a single file
Use the %Run macro from the mymacros plugin to call an external
randomiser like kookiejar that Gary mentioned in
to store a signature in a
  file called cookie.tpl
And call that cookie.tpl as a template with %Qinclude
As I wrote those options 'might' work, I didn't try them, but I think
they'd both do the job.

Now that I've finished this message I thought of another option.
3 Create an outgoing filter that triggers on every message, enable
'continue processing with other filters' and set it as first filter,
so it will be executed for every message.
Set as action export to a file called cookie.tpl and set the export
  template as %cookie="cookie.txt"
In the messages you want to use one of your cookies, be they text or
macro, you use the macro %QInclude="cookie.tpl"
Of course you need to take care of the proper paths in your macros,
but this is guaranteed to work as you want. No third party programs,
no big amount of separate cookie files or whatever.

The tag lines in the cookie.txt file are just copied into the mail as
text. Macros cannot be executed this way. They will be executed only
when they are in the template.

However, you are beinging up a nice suggestion for the wishlist!

I have a countdown timer in my Vista Sidebar that tells how long until
I retire. At the moment it says 5,569,607 seconds...ooops, 602,
601, etc. Also shows it in days, hours, etc, for convenience of the

Presumably so, but what I have is a directory called /all my stuff/
that contains installs of personal software, all personal files, etc,
etc. It is backed up daily to a 4GB flash drive, and somewhat less
frequently (at least every Saturday to a USB hard drive.

I used to use this technique (using a cool little program called
Directory Toolkit) to keep two computers in sync. But now just for
backup. But DT does the sync on all of it for me.

That's fairly easily done if you have an application that can
independently maintain a text file that contains the cookie. You then
use a PUT macro to insert the content of the text file into your
message.

For example, for a countdown to Christmas you could use the following
VBScript:

Dim Christmas, DaysToGo, Cookie, fso, f
Christmas = CDate("25 December 2008")
DaysToGo = DateDiff("d", Now, Christmas)
If DaysToGo > 0 Then
Cookie = DaysToGo & " days until Christmas"
ElseIf DaysToGo < 0 Then
Cookie = DaysToGo & " days since Christmas"
Else
  Cookie = "Happy Christmas!"
End If
Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set f = fso.CreateTextFile("C:\temp\countdown.txt", True)
f.Write Cookie
f.Close
Set f = Nothing
Set fso = Nothing

If you save that as (say) C:\temp\countdown.vbs you can call this with
the command
  wscript c:\temp\countdown.vbs //B
(//B suppresses any dialog boxes the script might show) You can run
this as a scheduled task under Windows. In your template, include the
macro:
%PUT="C:\temp\countdown.txt"

This should be easy to modify to get a "countdown cookie" for your own
purposes.

I think what people are talking about is a two step process. First, an
external program is executed to produce the desired text in a known
location and then Second, a template macro grabs it from that known
location (file) and puts it into the message being created.

For instance, the text "already living days and xxx hours" probably
needed to be updated just before the macro put it into the message. That's
the use of an external program.

Again, this is made an internal command (template macro) which
requests the information from outside and puts it into the message at

An external command would insert anything into your message which is
not in the template.

I know that the sorting office filters can create a temporary text
file to contain the message content and pass the name of that file to
an external command as the first formal parameter. As I write, I've no
idea whether the external command can modify the message content so
I've set up a small experiment to pause processing to let me modify
the file by hand and see what happens. If this text goes through
unaltered, it means that an external command set in an outgoing filter
won't be able to modify message text.

In the meantime, as I wrote upthread, there are uses for this sort of
thing.

I see. I hadn't caught the gist of your question.

I don't see how an external command could technically do that, I think
the macro needs a command that requests the information.

However, I don't know how the macros and templates really work behind
the scenes, so I am not sure it's impossible. Personally, I cannot
imagine a need for this though. Can you help my imagination and
describe a scenario?

Is there a macro for iTunes? With a 3G iPhone and a couple of iPods,
I finally made the switch.

Excellent - thanks Miguel. I don't normally run with VTitleSpy enabled
and just did it there to illustrate how the PUT macro can insert text
from an external program since it seemed relevant to the OP's question.

Unfortunately, as you can see from my sig, I'm running a very old
version of TB! and it seems that "MyMacros" doesn't work with TB
version 1?

The macro set "MyMacros" for The Bat! includes two macros specific for
Winamp:

  %WinAmpStatus
  %WinAmpTitle

You can download them from http://thebat.zetema.de/zip/mymacros.zip

You've been told about the %Put macro that offers the optioon to

You can run commands with the %Run macro, the %Run macro is available

I think that is a "batism" (as opposed to a baptism). I also go back
to FIDO (and to punched cards for that matter...I retire in two
months). Sort of like Microsoft renaming "anchors" in HTML to be
"bookmarks", etc, etc. Just think of the various names for "CVT"
(Continuously Variable Transmission) among different car
manufacturers. Remember there are actually people who sit around and
make up all these clever names, just like the ones who think up clever
names for every one of the hundreds of shade of blue for which they
have paint chips at the paint store.

For some reason, this cookie coincidence (dubbed cookidence on the TB!
lists) has been confirmed by several people. I just cannot imagine the
amount of code necessary to generate this kind of "random" choosing of
the cookies... it can't be by design. It's a case for the X-Files.

You might want to include some time-variable information, such as how
many days remain to an epic trip, or something as mundane as what is
currently playing on Winamp. See the last line of my sig? This was
created with a Winamp plugin called VTitleSpy that generates a text
file containing just that last line, which it keeps up to date so that
you know I was actually listening to Afro Celt Sound System while
typing this message. To insert the text output from an external
command, use the PUT macro, in my case it's:
  %PUT="c:\temp\vtitlespy.txt"

Thinking about it, another reason you might want to insert the ouptut
from an external command is to mark each message with a hash of the
current date/time so that your mail server can detect whether bounces
are from you or whether they're backscatter from the activities of
spammers etc. At least one firewall device uses this method to filter
out backscatter, so I suspect it'd be worthwhile if you get lots of
that.

I suspect there are many other reasons why someone might want to
include the output of an external program, and that I've merely
scratched the surface.

because it is backed up AND if you have to go to a new computer, the
cookies are brought over with the other documents; not in a Program
Files folder that is re-created without your cookie document when
downloading a new TheBat!.

TBs macro grabs for every message randomly another cookie from the list.

I stand corrected, thanks to Gunivortus and Roelof. Apparently The Bat does
most of this also. The advantage is that Kookiejar has some features for
adding and editing the cookies, and the features in Kookiejar are
documented.

I had no idea The Bat could do some of this. That's why I love it!?

I use only the Bat. Whenever I compose a new message the template uses
the line:

%COOKIE="C:\Documents and Settings\Rick\My Documents\mail account
exports\politics.txt"

I only have about 35 but that is by choice. What is the advantage of
Kookiejar? I am asking not baiting. Thanks

Place your 700 cookies in the cookie.txt file and TB will pick one
randomly every time you call the macro. No need for an extra
randomiser.

Yes, but Kookiejar manages the cookies and selects them randomly. I have
Kookiejar put a random cookie in cookie.txt every 5 min. Whenever I compose
a new message the following template adds it to my message.

%wrapped=%Cookie="C:\Program Files\KookieJar6\cookie.txt"

If you want to pick them manually you can, but I have over 700 to pick from
now, I'm lazy, no right click is needed, and the randomness is actually fun.

TB (at least my early version of TB) also lets you insert random
cookies into messages using a folder or contact template. Just place
a cookie macro:

%COOKIE="C:\Mail\Cookies.txt"

(where C:\Mail\Cookies.txt is the path of a text file with one cookie
per line) at the point where you want the cookie to appear. This is
how the cookie (tag line) got into the end of my sig.

Since you can configure this only for folders and or groups for which
you want to use cookies, and also use different sets of cookies for
different recipients, I suspect this might be more flexible than
KookieJar.

But in TB you don't need that, TB has a built-in option for cookies.
Just gather your favourite cookies in a plain ASCII file (a .txt file, f.i. made
with notepad) and save that somewhere, f.i. in your The Bat directory.
Then rightclick the mouse on a folder in the folder tree.
Choose 'Properties', then under Template 'New message'.
Put the cursor in the right window near above your sig delimiter, where you want
to appear the cookie, Then rightclick again and choose: 'Cookie from a file'
Then led the upcoming window to your cookies file.
Done.
Do the same with Reply under Template.

I keep several different cookie files in a folder under "My
Documents". I just have to path to them. I use a different one for
different mail groups that I am in via address book templates.

I am not sure if there is a limit, as I have seen some that are quite
long - several lines. A carriage return marks the end of each separate
"quote". If you want to have a line break within a quote use "\n"

Try it :)

There's a handy program for generating random cookies. It's called cookie
jar and it's free.

That being done with the %Cookie macro, in my case I'm using this:
%Cookie="%MailDir\t-shirt.txt"
I've got a cookie file that's called (for historical reasons)
t-shirt.txt That file is located in my mail directory.

The contents of that file are cookies, each on a single line and the
cookie macro picks them at random.
It's also possible to place the cookies at the account properties
 (Account -> Properties -> Templates -> Cookies)
and those are used when you use the %Cookie macro without any
reference to a file. (See the help file)
For maintenance reasons I prefer my cookies in a separate, where
they're accessible for all accounts and that makes it easier to use
multiple cookie sets for use in different situations.
For example, when I'm sending an official moderator message to this
list, I'm using a special cookie file with moderator related cookies.
